The late Professor
Fred Taylor,
Emeritus Fellow of
Jesus College.
History in 1958, and was a highly regarded scholar
on the Church of England and Methodism in the
eighteenth century. He also served as Dean, Fellow
Librarian and Editor of the Jesus College Record. He
was an outstanding Tutorial Fellow, and many
former students came forward to share their
memories of being taught by John, remembering
him as a wonderfully kind and inspirational tutor.
The College will fundraise for an endowed
Undergraduate Bursary in History in John’s name in

In this edition, Jesus colleagues also pay tribute to another
Emeritus Fellow – Fred Taylor – who passed away in December
2021 (page 106). Fred joined the Department of Physics and
Jesus College in 1966 as a DPhil student, under the supervision
of the renowned Sir John Houghton. He was an extremely
gifted and accomplished scientist but, as Rich Grenyer
remembers, he “wore his learning very lightly and was always
delighted to talk about life, the universe and everything else”.
I also extend my condolences to the family of alumnus and
Honorary Fellow Alec Monk (1962, PPE). Alec contributed
greatly to the life of the College, not least during the financial
decision-making process for the purchase of the Northgate site
on which our new building now stands. Alec, alongside fellow
alumnus Rodney Wright, was also at the forefront of the
Ukrainian Student Support Fund campaign. He was a keen and
loyal member of the College, and his presence is missed by us
all, as is that of another Honorary Fellow, Sir Christopher
Foster, who died in February.
