to lift lid on
recycling
plant
THE CITY’S recycling facility
will be opened up to the public for
the first time since 2020.
The Parkhouse Rd facility in
Sockburn, which is normally
closed to the public, will open its
doors on Saturday from 9am-1pm.
The open day will offer
people an opportunity to view
EcoSort’s recent $16.8 million
facility upgrade, get up close to a
recycling truck, and learn about
what happens to their recycling
once it’s collected.
There will also be prizes to win
throughout the event.
“It’s a fantastic
opportunity for
people to learn
more about what
happens to the
clean cardboard,
paper, metal cans,
glass bottles and
plastic bottles
and containers Ross Trotter
they put out for
recycling and to understand how
the recycling process works,’’ said
city council resource recovery
manager Ross Trotter.
“The EcoSort can process up to
25 tonnes of yellow bin contents
an hour. That’s the equivalent of
about 2750 full bins.”
Trotter said the open day also
aimed to remind residents about
the importance of putting the
right items in their yellow bins.

markets, who buy our recycling
product, have very high
standards,” he said.

have been named in the top
11 students in New Zealand,
after winning premier awards
in the 2022 NZQA scholarship
examinations.
Corin Simcock from St
Andrew’s College and Shun
Ting Khor from Burnside
High School were told of their
achievements this month.
Corin gained an impressive
seven New Zealand scholarships
overall, with three at
outstanding level in calculus,
chemistry and technology. He
also gained four scholarships as
a Year 12 student in 2021.
As a premier award winner,
for three years of his tertiary
studies he will receive an annual
$10,000 scholarship.
Sung Ting received
outstanding scholarships in
biology, calculus, chemistry
and statistics, and scholarship
in design and visual
communication, english, and
physics.
St Andrew’s also had other
successes. Tom Edwards (Year
13 in 2022) won a top subject
scholar award for receiving the
top mark in New Zealand in
digital technology. Overall, he
gained seven scholarships with
two at outstanding level.

at St Andrew’s. In an
unprecedented decision, three
of them – Corin Simcock, Luke
Zhu and Toby Harvie – were
jointly awarded College Dux for
2022, when it was impossible
to choose one based on their
academic results. Tom was the
Proxime Accessit. The boys
are friends as well as academic
rivals, and also gained global
success in 2022 as one of three
winners of the International
Mathematical Modelling
Competition.
Rector Christine Leighton
said she is “incredibly proud” of
the students’ achievements.
This is the third time during
the last 12 years a St Andrew’s
student has won a Premier
Award.

Summer is not without its perils for your favourite
family furries. Every summer we see a high proportion
of the same cases coming in so I thought I’d mention
a few.
Barley grass seeds are particularly nasty, especially
for dogs. They usually enter from the paws but can
weave their way into any part of the dogs coat, then
they penetrate the skin and just keep tracking. We
have surgically removed barley grass seeds from
the abdomen, bladder and one caused an abscess
underneath the spine. It is common also for Dr Steve
Heap to remove them from eyes (
conjunctival sac).
Early detection is
the key. Thoroughly
check your dog all
over after exercise.

be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
Another cause for vet visits are ear infections ( Otitis externa). These are complex, usually
involve both ears and are painful. Typically pets will present for head shaking, scratching,
a foul odour and hot painful ears. Sometimes wax or a discharge is seen in the ear canals.
The most common causes of otitis externa are ear mites, food or environmental allergens,
Grass seed foreign bodies, bacterial or yeast infections and endocrine disease. The most
important step is to be able to examine both ear canals and especially view the tympanic
membrane ( ear drum) as this allows a treatment protocol to be worked out. We will then
perform ear cytology to see what infectious agents we are dealing with. More often
dogs need to be sedated to allow a thorough gentle clean to allow ear treatments the
best shot at working. Plus assessment is crucial in removing foreign objects, checking
for tumors/polyps and making sure the middle ear isn’t involved. Over represented
dogs are Spaniels and Retrievers - with there large hairy drooping ears they create the
right environment for nasties to grow. Many dogs need weekly ear cleaning during the
summer months and used after a swim in a dirty pond to prevent issues.
Flea or mosquito bite allergic facial dermatitis in cats can also be commonly seen too in
summer. These cats are usually very itchy and self mutilate themselves, with the nose
and the ear tips being targeted most. The lesions are often devoid of hair, ulcerated, red,
infected and swelling is seen. Secondary infections then follow due to the disruption
of the skin barrier, allowing water loss and the penetration of infectious organisms. We
typically treat these with antibiotics, pain relief and anti inflammatories, plus effective flea
control.
Many older dogs suffer from Acquired Laryngeal Paralysis. It is more common in large
breed dogs over 9 years of age, with the Labrador being over represented. Symptoms are
worse in the summer months for these affected dogs.
Clinically these dogs will present with many symptoms, depending on the severity of the
disease.
Commonly seen signs are changes in the bark, difficulty breathing, coughing, non stop
panting, regurgitation, exercise and heat intolerance and sometimes collapse. Many of
these dogs also suffer from ataxia and weakness in the hindlegs, with knuckling of the
paws seen when tired. This is because dogs with Laryngeal paralysis often suffer from
generalised “ Neuromuscular Disease”. This is often referred to as Geriatric Onset Laryngeal
Paralysis and Polyneuropathy.( GOLPP)
Conservative treatment options include walking these dogs in a harness, keeping them
cool and in a well ventilated environment, not overheating them and short exercise
activity when its cooler. Sometimes medications are
given to help the cough and calm them down if they are
anxious and restless. Surgery is an option for those dogs
with severe respiratory signs that are unresponsive to
conservative treatment.
Our darling Lola has GOLPP but is well managed
conservatively. She can still exercise for an hour a day but
I avoid the hotter parts of the day. She loves swimming
but Im careful where I take her as she can regurgitate up
excess water swallowed. I elevate her food and am careful
what I feed her. She’s not currently on medications.
All in all for a 13.5 year old cancer survivor, she’s doing
awesome.

Two suspicious fires
at school investigated

INVESTIGATIONS are
underway into two fires
at Wairarapa Cobham
Intermediate.
The fires early on
Tuesday morning were
minor but investigators say
thy were suspicious.
Fire crews were called to
the school at 2.30am and
again at 5.30am.
Wairarapa Cobham is in
the final stages of a rebuild
on Ilam Rd, with the last
of construction set to be
completed late this year.
The school was damaged
in the earthquakes
and required a total
rebuild. It was part of the
Christchurch Schools
Rebuild Programme,
which redeveloped 115
earthquake-damaged
schools.

FIFTEEN AGE-group
Canterbury softballers have
made three world cup squads for
tournaments taking place this
year.
In the Major Sox (U23) team,
Liam Potts, Josh Lubiejewski,
and Caleb Stewart will play at
the first world cup at this age
level in Argentina in April, in a
team dominated by Auckland
players. Selectors have gone for
the same 16 players as last October,
before the tournament was
postponed.
Said co-coach Steven Deans:
“This group (has) worked hard
both on and off the diamond and
have done everything asked to
get the team in the best possible
shape to perform at the World
Cup.”
After winning the U19 national
championships last month,
Canterbury have the most representatives
in the Junior Black Sox
squad heading to this year’s U18
World Cup.
The tournament’s most valuable
players, Jacob Neale and
Jayden Potts, were named alongside
teammates Hapene Kumeroa,
Connor Stanley, Fletcher Due
and Hunter Simpson. Former
Black Sox captain Jarrad Martin
will again coach the junior side.
Three of the 19-man squad will
be named as non-travelling reserves
ahead of the tournament,
with the dates and location of
the U18 World Cup yet to be
confirmed.
It’s an exciting year for women’s
development in the sport,
with the inaugural U15 World
Cup set to be held in Tokyo,
Japan, in October.
Bella Folesi, Jade Croskery,
Hannah Jones, Aimee Goodmanson
and Jorja Simpson will
assemble with other players
for two days of training before
taking part in Auckland’s Easter
Classic in April, in a bid to impress
selectors and be named in

Snappy vegetarian eating, Chinese-style
Maggie Zhu’s vegetarian
Chinese Homestyle
cookbook is filled with
delicious, straightforward
dishes – perfect for quick,
nutritious and affordable
meals
Baby bok choy with fried
tofu
Serves 4
Ingredients
300g cucumber, partially peeled
3 cloves garlic, crushed and
minced
1 Tbsp Chinkiang vinegar
1 Tbsp light soy sauce
1 tsp sugar
½ tsp salt
½ tsp toasted sesame oil
2 tsp chilli oil, or to taste, for
serving (optional)
This is a dish Zhu would
always get super-excited about
when her mum made it. It
demonstrates how you can use
fried tofu to make a vege dish
so satisfying – the tofu soaks
up the soy sauce and gets a little
caramelised from the sugar.
Store-bought fried tofu creates
a better result for this dish, but
homemade tofu will work too.
Ingredients
450g baby bok choy
1 Tbsp peanut oil
2 spring onions, sliced
1 tsp sugar
2 Tbsp light soy sauce
2 cups deep-fried tofu puffs, cut
in half
Directions
Separate the large leaves from
the baby bok choy and remove
and discard their tough ends;
leave the smaller leaves attached
to the cores. Carefully wash the
bok choy in a colander.
In a large skillet, heat the oil
over medium-high heat until
hot. Add the spring onions and
stir a few times until fragrant.
Add the bok choy and cook,
stirring occasionally, until the
leaves are just softened, 1 to 2
minutes. Sprinkle with the sugar
and swirl in the soy sauce. Immediately
stir a few times to mix
well. Add the tofu and cook and
stir to mix well.
Cover the pan and reduce
the heat to medium. Let steam
for 30 seconds. Uncover and
stir a few times. If the bok choy
has softened throughout, it’s
done; if not, cover and cook for
another 10 to 20 seconds, until
it is cooked through and slightly
caramelised on the edges.
Transfer the contents of the
pan to a large serving plate and
serve hot.

Directions
Dry the cucumber with paper
towels. Place it on a large cutting
board and carefully use the flat
side of a knife or cleaver to crush
it; a meat pounder will work as
well. Cut the cucumber into bitesize
pieces and place the pieces in
a medium bowl.
Add the garlic to the cucumber.
In a small bowl, combine the
vinegar, soy sauce, sugar, salt,
and sesame oil for the sauce and
mix well.
Right before serving, pour the
sauce over the cucumber and
garlic and mix well.
(Do not add the sauce beforehand;
it will cause the cucumber
to lose water and dilute the
sauce.)
Drizzle with chilli oil (if using)
and serve.
