Volunteer Recognition Event is back!

We see it every day - volunteers leading community activities,

solving community problems, lifting community spirits

and improving the overall quality of life where we live. These

people work hard, and deserve to be recognized for the work

they do weaving our communities together. After a three year

hiatus, the Slocan Valley Community Legacy Society (SVCLS)

is thrilled to once again be honouring valley volunteers at a

free celebration during National Volunteer Week in Canada,

April 16 – 23, 2023. The event is happening at the Vallican

Whole Community Centre on Sunday, April 23rd from 3:00

to 5:00 pm. Join us for an afternoon of tasty treats, great door

prizes, socializing with neighbours, and celebrating of the

power of volunteers!

“This is our fifth annual “Get Your Just Desserts”, says Val

Mayes, event coordinator and SVCLS board chair. “We were so

disappointed that we couldn’t hold the event for the last three

years, but now we are back and ready to host a great party!”

“We wish we had room for all the volunteers in the valley,

but there isn’t a hall with that much space!” she adds. With

over 90 non-profit groups, from firefighters to parent advisory

committees, from arts councils and historical societies to

trail-maintaining groups, from early childhood supporters to

seniors housing (and much more), there are so many dedicated

citizens giving their time and energy that the numbers

are really impressive. So instead, each group is invited to select

up to five deserving folks to send to the event. These could be

the group’s most active volunteers, or perhaps someone who

couldn’t make it last time. Valley residents are also encouraged

to suggest an individual, someone who volunteers informally

rather than as part of an organization.

The event is free to participants thanks to funding support

from CBT and the RDCK (Area H). Registering early is

strongly encouraged as space is limited. Send the name of the

organization and the five names of the guests to svcls.event@

gmail.com . The best part – the guests won’t have to do any

work! More information can be found on the website at www.

slocanvalleylegacy.com .

TB Vets Supports Maternity Ward

Once again, the TB Vets Charitable Foundation has made a

generous donation to Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation. This

recent donation was used to purchase a TCM5 Flex Monitor for

the Maternity Ward. This device provides non-invasive, continuous

monitoring of oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in newborns.

Through the use of a skin sensor, the monitor will provide

information that would only have been available by drawing

blood, thereby reducing the number of times blood needs to be

drawn on these newborns.

As Clinical Operations Manager Trina Larson explains: “We

are excited to use the best technology available to support safer

and more comfortable care for our littlest patients. Every drop

of their precious blood matters to their recovery and transition

to breathing in the ‘outside’ world. TB Vets’ generous donation

enables us to

carefully monitor

wee ones who are

receiving respiratory

support such

as continuous positive

airway pressure

(CPAP) or

mechanical ventilation.

The TCM-5

Flex’s real-time

monitoring aids

a faster response

to changes in our

patient’s condition

and improves

our workflow

Learn More:

planning with our respiratory therapist and pediatricians, supporting

the sustainability of their services in our community.”

TB Vets CEO, Kandys Merola says: “TB Vets is committed to

honouring the deep rooted history of our Veterans by continuing

to support Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation with much

needed respiratory equipment. The $20,000 donation for the

purchase of a TCM5 Flex Monitor is the latest piece of equipment

delivered to the hospital

thanks to our

generous donors,

that will provide a

meaningful solution

for the community.

CNOY a Success!

A little snow started to fall just in time to make the Coldest

Night of the Year (CNOY) walk in Nelson a little more winter-like

and stunningly beautiful. Over 300 individuals on 59

teams registered to walk on Saturday, Feb 25th to raise funds

to support the community and raise funds they did. The community

pledged an almost record-breaking $90,788 with a few

“Mountain Man”

Oct 1, 1942 - Feb 27, 2023

pledges still to come in. What an amazing show of support—

thank you to all of you!

The walkers were greeted by the enthusiastic sounds of the

Moving Mosaic Samba Band and hit the streets after a few

encouraging words from Nelson CARES Society Board Chair

Ron Little, Nelson-Creston MLA (and CNOY volunteer) Brittny

Anderson and Mayor Janice Morrison - delivered from the

HARVEY REMPLE

With great sadness we announce that Harvey Remple passed away suddenly from a

heart attack at his home, accompanied by his loving wife of 62 years. Harvey was a

devoted man. Devoted to his faith, his wife, his family, his work, and his community.

He touched the lives of so many as an employer and friend. Harvey and his chipper

attitude could always be heard singing, whistling or encouraging those around him.

His lifetime faith in a loving God was evident in all he did, and how deeply he loved.

Harvey wore many ‘hats’ in his lifetime: Log home builder, mechanic, repairman,

trapper, hunter, fisherman, nature lover, hiker, mill owner, pioneer/homesteader...

to name a few. The last hat he wore was as a caregiver to his loving wife Marlene.

He’s leaving behind his wife and 3 children: Kimberley (Chuck Lafortune), Kevi (Gary

Schneider) and Spencer (Kate Remple), 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren,

8 sisters and one brother (predeceased). This sudden end to a beautiful and romantic

life leaves a hole that cannot be filled.

A Celebration of Life will be held in summer.

Condolences can be sent to www.thompsonfs.ca

deck of a donated Home Hardware flat-deck truck.

“This is truly a community achievement” said Ron Little. “It

is the sponsors and donors that have made the success of Ward

Street Place possible; thanks to all of you.”

After a brisk and snowy 2km or 5km walk, all coordinated

safely by a crew of volunteer route marshals and support vehicles

(with a quick Rest Stop at the Kootenay Co-op), everyone

ended up back at St. Joseph’s School for a lovely bowl of

warm veggie chilli, cornbread, cookies, and warm cranberry

beverage. Girl Guide volunteers from Pathfinders dished out

the meal which was prepared by the Post Graduate Hospitality

Management program students at Selkirk College under the

instruction of David Havemann. The bulk of the ingredients

were donated by the Kootenay Co-op Store. The leftover chili

and fixins were sent to Stepping Stones Emergency Shelter.

Jim Lapinski

It is with great sadness that

we announce the passing of

James (Jim) Ernest Lapinski

on February 18, 2023. Jim

was born to Mary Smith in

Hexam, England on June

11, 1953. Jim was a young

boy with a strong British

accent when he immigrated

with his mother to Canada.

He attended school in Burnaby,

BC until the age of ten. His

mother was united in marriage

in 1959 to Waclaw Lapinski. Waclaw

adopted Jim as his own son and

gave the surname he used throughout

his life. In 1962 a foster child came

into the family named Donald who

also was adopted into the family who

Jim welcomed as a little brother. Soon

after in 1963 Waclaw moved the family

to Winlaw, BC. In 1968, another

foster brother moved in, Rick Nelson,

who fit in like a glove to make the family

a whole.

Jim attended W.E Graham and Mount

Sentinel high schools, where he was

active in sports, setting several school

records along the way in track and

field. It was then

Jim began to

play little league

baseball in

where his team

won the local

championship

in the Slocan

Valley. Jim started

his working

career at the local

sawmill on the

green chain but unfortunately

a serious

car accident interrupted

Jim’s life trajectory. After a lengthy

convalescence, Jim got right back up

and carried on although with life long

chronic pain. Without formal training,

he worked as a carpenter demonstrating

serious skills in cabinetry and

wood joinery. He also worked as an

autobody repairman and painter for a

number of years all while growing vibrant,

healthy gardens to fill the larder

and to supplement the family income.

An excellent carver in wood and soapstone,

Jim sold his artwork at times.

He loved to travel and saw much of

June 11, 1953 - February 18, 2023

Western Europe as a teenager and later

visited the US, Mexico, Belize and

Guatemala. The most momentous of

his voyages was the one Jim made in

1986 to claim his lovely wife Lyn who

resided in the Philippines. Two children

shortly followed – Phillip in 1987

and Maria in 1988 – where they were

raised in the Village of Slocan, BC.

During his retirement Jim continued

to carve, rebuild boats, make classic

furniture and dabble in bodywork on

his brothers classic vehicles. Most recently,

Jim had become a very proud

grandfather to Olivia Lapinski, a little

girl whom he adored.

Jim was predeceased by his parents

Mary in 1991 and Waclaw in 1992.

Jim is survived by his ex-wife and dear

friend Lyn Lapinski (nee Miranda),

Son Phillip (Sage) daughter Maria

(Slade) Grandaughter Olivia, brother

Donald (Carol) of Castlegar, BC brother

Rick Nelson (Ena) of Quesnel, BC

along with numerous nieces and

nephews.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration

of life will be held in Slocan,

BC on April 1, 2023 at the Legion Hall.

The Nelson Coldest Night teams knocked their fundraising

out of the park. The Nelson Covenant Church raised $4,285

followed by the Stepping Stones/NSI Super Stars at $3,400.

Teams RBC, Coldwell Banker Rosling Real Estate, and Nelson

Rotary Noon and Daybreak Nightwalkers rounded out the top

five with over $2,500 each. Sandra Bernier raised the most of

any individual walkers with $3,050, followed by Randy Richmond

who also cross-country skied over 100km in support

of the event. Maria Schuh and Andrew Murray each raised

$1,400 or more and also sponsored the event with their respective

businesses, Mistiso’s Place Vacation Rentals and Hemlock

Homes respectively. Donations are still accepted until the end

of March.

The winner of the Hall Street Radio battle between Kootenay

Co-op Radio and 103.5 The Bridge will end up with The Bridge

spending some time under the bridge in Kootenay Lake. Their

friendly fundraising competition ended with Kootenay Co-op

Radio raising $1,745 and The Bridge $1,656. It was neck and

neck the whole time. This was their first CNOY “battle” and

Nelson CARES Society appreciates this sort of friendly competition

to support the community.

The Coldest Night of the Year is a walk-a-thon fundraiser that

raises awareness and funds for the most vulnerable individuals

in our community. The funds raised by the teams, individuals,

and sponsors stay in the community to fund the Ready for

Home Program operating out of Ward Street Place. The Ready

for Home program supports those residents to navigate healthcare,

government documents, and many other challenges that

allow them to remain safely housed. Nelson CARES Society

looks forward to celebrating a decade of community support

and hosting the 10th annual Coldest Night in February 2024.

Author Reading Series Event

Oxygen Art Centre welcomes Canisia Lubrin and Jessica

Johns for the Author Reading Series.

Acclaimed poet, editor and writer Canisia Lubrin’s work

explore ideas of social justice and the limits and possibilities

of art, form, and language.

Polyvocal in register, Lubrin’s second book, The

Dyzgraphxst (M & S, 2020) mines meanings of kinship

through the wide and intimate reach of language across

geographies and generations. Against the contemporary

backdrop of intensified capitalist fascism, toxic nationalism,

and climate disaster, the figure Jejune asks, how have

I come to make home out of unrecognizability. Marked

by and through diasporic life, Jejune declares, I was not

myself. I am not myself. My self resembles something having

nothing to do with me.

The Dyzgraphxst (M & S, 2020)

won the OCM Bocas Prize for

Caribbean Poetry and the overall

Literature prize, the Griffin Poetry

Prize, and the Derek Walcott Prize.

That same year, she was awarded

the Canada Council’s Joseph S.

Stauffer prize for literary achievement

and the Windham-Campbell

prize for a body of work. Among

other honours, her writing was

finalist for the Governor General’s

Award, the Pat Lowther Memorial

Award, and Trillium Book Award

for Poetry.

Accompanying Lubrin is writer,

editor and nehiyaw auntie, Jessica

Johns with her debut novel,

Bad Cree (Harper-Collins, 2023),

where dreams, family and spirits

collide.

Bad Cree (Harper-Collins, 2023)

follows Mackenzie, a Cree millennial,

when she wakes up in her

one-bedroom Vancouver apartment

clutching a pine bough she

had been holding in her dream just

moments earlier. When she blinks,

it disappears. But she can still smell

the sharp pine scent in the air, the

nearest pine tree a thousand kilometres

away in the far reaches of

Treaty 8.

Mackenzie continues to accidentally

bring back items from

her dreams, dreams that are eerily

similar to real memories of her

older sister and Kokum before

their untimely deaths. As Mackenzie’s

life spirals into a living

nightmare—crows are following

her around and she’s getting texts

from her dead sister on the other

side—it becomes clear that these

dreams have terrifying, real-life

consequences. Desperate for

help, Mackenzie returns to her

mother, sister, cousin, and aunties

in her small Alberta hometown.

Together, they try to uncover what

is haunting Mackenzie before

something irrevocable happens to

anyone else around her.

Haunting, fierce, an ode to

female relations and the strength

found in kinship, Bad Cree is a

gripping, arresting debut by an

unforgettable voice.

The evening will also feature a

reading by student writer from the

Selkirk College Creative Writing

Program.

Join us on Wednesday, April 5,

2023 @ 4:00 PM PST on Zoom to

participate in the second instalment

of the Author Reading Series

featuring Canisia Lubrin and Jessica

Johns. Admission is free or by

donation. Register via EventBrite

to attend.

This event is generously supported

by the Columbia Kootenay

Cultural Alliance. Special thanks

to Oxygen’s Author Reading Series

committee.

Who is God?

Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth or

ever THOU HADST FORMED THE EARTH and the

WORLD, even FROM EVERLASTING to EVERLAST-

ING, thou art GOD.

Our text concludes two things about God. First, He is

eternal, meaning God had no beginning and He has no

ending. Second, God made the planet earth where we live.

In fact, Genesis 1:16 declares, ‘And God made two great

lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light

to rule the night: HE MADE THE STARS ALSO. Both

counts show God to be far superior to us in existence and

capability. Can it be true that He cares about you and I?

In loving memory of

Robert Jeffrey Beck

August 18, 1971 - February 3, 2023

It is with heartfelt sorrow that we share

of the passing of Robert Jeffrey (“Jeff”)

Beck. He passed away suddenly on

February 3rd in his Castlegar home with

his father and stepmother by his side.

The first born to father, Robert Keith Beck, and mother, Dena Elizabeth

Beck (née Calbick), at KLDH in Nelson, BC. Jeff spent his younger years

growing up in both Nelson and Castlegar. He could often be found with

his younger brothers and friends playing hockey, or soccer, or racing BMX

bikes around his uphill Nelson neighbourhoods. After graduating from

Stanley Humphries High School in 1989, Jeff went on to study at BCIT in

Burnaby. Work opportunities later took him to Edmonton, then eventually

back to Castlegar (back to his Koots Roots). In his most recent years, Jeff

battled with kidney problems, resulting in 3 years of dialysis treatments,

then a transplant surgery in 2018. Throughout that trying time, Jeff struggled

to regain his zest for life. Jeff will be remembered most for his big ol’

heart, his gentle smile and his undeniable passion for classic rock music

and all things hockey.

Robert Jeffrey was pre-deceased by 3 grandfathers, 3 grandmothers,

and 2 brothers. Jeff leaves behind, his father, Keith (Shirley), his mother,

Dena (George), his sisters, Candace (Jake) and Charmain, and his brother,

Jarrod. As well as nieces, Haley and Breighan, nephews, Matthew

(Courtney), Berghen and Sorren, along with numerous aunts, uncles and

cousins.

The family wishes to extend their utmost gratitude to the nurses and staff

of the KBRH Kidney Care Clinic in Trail for the unwavering kindness and

support that Jeff received.

As an expression of your sympathy, you may make a donation to The Kidney

Foundation of Canada, in Jeff’s memory.

GRANT EDWARD

CLARK-MARLOW

R.C.A.F. CAPTAIN, Retired

03 July 1925 – 01 March 2023

It is with much sadness that we announce

the passing of our father.

Grant passed away peacefully at the New Denver

Pavilion at the age of 97.

He is survived by his brother Chuck Marlow in

Logan Lake, his children: Douglas Clark-Marlow

(Mary Ann), Gary Clark-Marlow (Sherrie), Patti

Coutts (David) and Andrew Clark-Marlow (Petra);

eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren

and one great-great-grandson. He was predeceased

by his wives Connie MacIntosh and Lisa

Lundgard; by his brothers Art, Keith, Bob and his

sister Dianne.

Grant was born in Griffin, SK and raised in

Winnipeg, MB. Grant and his twin Keith joined

the RCAF in 1943. Grant served as a Wireless Air

Gunner on Halifax bombers out of Tiree, Scotland

in WW II and was mustered out in 1945. He worked

odd jobs and attended the University of Manitoba

for two years with an interest in Philosophy. He

served in the RCAF from 1950 through 1975 as a

Radar Tech on small radar bases throughout Canada

and as an instructor with Training Command.

He served with the UN Peacekeeping Force in the

Congo in 1963. After retirement he moved from

Penhold, AB to Salmon Arm, BC and then on to his

slice of heaven - Kaslo, BC.

Grant played hockey until he was 88 (known as

the ‘Great Grantsky’) and golfed until he was 90

and was proud that he could score his age. He

was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Kaslo

Branch # 74 and loved shuffleboard and darts.

Dad was a ‘master punster’ and loved it when a pun

sailed over our heads. He played piano, harmonica,

banjo, and mandolin.

At Grant’s request there will be no service. Donations

can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion

Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu,

When the clouds roll by, I’ll come to you,

Then the skies will seem more blue,

Down in lover’s lane my dearie,

Wedding bells will ring so merrily,

Every tear will be a memory,

So, wait and pray each night for me,

Till we meet again.
