Next generation of legends step up

WHARENUI Primary School 

pupils got to train with Richie 

McCaw last week. 

They were part of a group of 

several Christchurch schools 

taking part in an Active Kids 

initiative at Hagley Oval, held 

by McCaw and fellow rugby 

legend Dan Carter’s charity the 

iSPORT Foundation. 

The foundation encourages 

children to enjoy the outdoors 

and engage in sport and 

physical activities. 

“I just know the power 

of sport . . . on kids, on 

health, on everything in their 

communities,” McCaw said. 

“If we can encourage kids 

to give it a go and get involved, 

that’s got to be good for 

our society. And it gives the 

next generation the chance 

to do something I’m 

passionate about.” 

Many clubs, community 

groups and schools have limited 

sports equipment and financial 

resources to get their young 

people active. 

The foundation visits groups 

in need of support, providing 

them with sports equipment 

and opportunities. 

Ambassadors say there are big 

positive health benefits to active 

play – helping build critical 

and creative thinkers, inspiring 

curiosity, building resilience 

and encouraging more effective 

learning. 

Wharenui pupils relished the 

event. 

“It was pretty good because I 

got to meet a lot of nice people,” 

said pupil Mikaiah Tanielu. 

Similarly, Flynn Wise was 

proud of his achievements. 

“I smashed the ball against 

the wickets, and I smashed 

some big hits and made my 

friends run,” he said. 

McCaw believes if we can get 

children moving while they are 

young, the effects can be lifechanging, 

sparking a lifelong 

passion for sport and an active 

lifestyle.

Rock riffle to help movement of fish 

A NATURALISED rock riffle 

being installed in the Ōtākaro- 

Avon River near Mona Vale 

Homestead will help native and 

sport fish easily move to and 

from the river’s upper catchment. 

The rock riffle has been 

specifically designed for New 

Zealand’s fish species and will be 

similar to those seen in nature. 

A naturalised rock riffle 

is a long ramp with a gentle 

gradient. Rocks are strategically 

placed to allow for a wide 

range of flow conditions to 

cater to the variety of weak and 

strong swimming fish species. 

Larger emergent boulders are 

also placed in the waterway in 

clusters to create resting places 

for fish and spawning habitat for 

invertebrates. 

It will be installed over the 

existing weir. Work began last 

month and is expected to take 

six months to complete. 

Said city council spokesman 

Gavin Hutchison: “Barriers to 

movement in waterways have 

been identified as a significant 

threat to both native and sports 

fish in New Zealand.” 

More than 76 per cent of 

New Zealand’s living native 

freshwater fish are classified 

as threatened with or at risk 

of extinction, Department of 

Conservation figures show. 

“The remediation of this 

weir will allow access to 

approximately 9km of waterway 

upstream of the weir and 

increase migration, diversity 

and abundance of ika in the 

upper river’s catchment,” said 

Hutchison. 

“Limited passage of brown 

trout occurs at this weir but 

likely not full passage. In 

addition, the weir is a barrier to 

many of our native ika (fish) who 

are poor swimmers, in particular 

inanga (whitebait), bluegill bully 

and lamprey, which all have 

conservation status. 

“The native fish are unable 

to swim or jump through the 

barrier and that’s why we find 

very few native species in the 

waterways upstream.” 

More than half of New 

Zealand’s native fish species 

travel back and forth from 

freshwater to the sea to complete 

their life cycle. The new rock 

riffle will enable easy access to 

upstream waterways. 

It will be similar to a rock riffle 

previously installed near the 

Antigua Boatsheds. 

The history of the Mona Vale 

weir dates back to the 1860s 

when the Deans family leased 

six acres of their land adjoining 

the Avon River loop (including 

water rights) to William Derisley 

Wood for the construction of a 

flour mill. 

In November 1860 Wood 

called for tenders from ditchers 

and excavators to cut the 

mill race across the river, and 

construction began around

In order for the mill race 

to obtain a sufficient flow of 

water to turn the mill’s wheel, 

Wood was required to install a 

weir within the channel of the 

Avon River loop as a means of 

controlling the water flow. 

Extensive repairs to the 

original timber weir were carried 

out in 1939 and the existing 

concrete weir was renewed by the 

Christchurch Drainage Board in 

the mid-1980s.

Young band flying high 

after ‘bloody brilliant’ festival

YOUNG BAND Zephyr are 

on cloud nine after playing to 

thousands of people at Selwyn 

Sounds. 

The members are all in year 

13, with drummer Mya Cawood, 

17, at Avonside Girls’ High, 

guitarist Reuben Anderson, 17, 

at Christchurch Boys’ High, and 

bassist Scarlett Robson, 17, and 

singer Cleo Cavell, 16, both at 

Christchurch Girls’ High. 

Cawood said playing to 

between 4000 and 5000 people 

was “bloody brilliant.” 

“We played well as a band 

and met a lot of amazing 

people – Dave Dobbyn, Mi-Sex, 

Greg Johnson, he was a bit of a 

favourite, he was a really nice 

man. Sometimes I pinched 

myself and thought: ‘What are 

we doing here?’ 

“It was such an amazing 

opportunity, really.” 

Cawood had a great time in 

the band’s engine room, keeping 

her mates in time from her 

throne on the drums. 

“We played perfectly, 

everything went as planned, it 

was a really good experience 

being here. All thanks to David 

Parlane.” 

The band was chosen to open 

the day-long Selwyn Sounds 

music festival at Lincoln Domain 

on Saturday by promoter and 

festival director David Parlane. 

Cawood said it was an exciting 

experience. 

“It really does amp you up 

playing to a bigger crowd, gets 

you really excited, it is so good.” 

Said Anderson: “It went about 

as well as it could have, we all 

played really well, I’m proud of 

the rest of the band. 

“We’re really thankful to him, 

we really appreciate it.” 

Robson said playing in front 

of a big crowd was a big step 

forward for the band. 

“The energy is completely 

different, it was full on – so 

much fun.” 

They estimated 4000 to 5000 

people when they went on stage 

at 10.50am. 

“It was about 10 times bigger 

than the biggest crowd we 

played to when we played at 

the Rockquest finals last year,” 

Anderson said.

positive comments. 

Said Robson: “When we were 

playing, we got some good claps 

and ‘whoops’ and what not. Then 

afterwards, when we went out 

into the crowds, people stopped 

us and gave us really nice 

compliments. That was really 

nice to hear.” 

They agreed playing on the 

same stage at Sir Dave Dobbyn, 

Gin Wigmore, Stellar*, Greg 

Johnson, and Hoodoo Gurus 

was the definite highlight of their 

career to date. 

The band plays at The Bower 

in North New Brighton each 

Sunday as part of a three-month 

residency. 

Playing at Selwyn Sounds and 

at The Bower every weekend will 

help their career. 

Said Anderson: “I think it’ll 

really help us get out into the 

local music scene. 

“A lot of people who watched 

us were from Christchurch and 

the surrounding area. I think 

it’ll really help our publicity. As 

Scarlett said, so many people 

came up to us afterwards and 

said how much they enjoyed our 

set. 

“We had a lot of people say 

they’re going to come to our next 

gig and they’re going to look out 

for us. It is really encouraging to 

hear that people are digging the 

sort of music we’re playing.” 

Zephyr played some Led 

Zeppelin and Blondie covers, 

as well as their own originals 

during the 40-minute set at 

Lincoln.

Gary’s commitment to breathwork 

sees him acknowledged by peers 

IF YOU had asked a young Gary 

Syme what he had imagined 

for his retirement, he would 

not have pictured receiving 

a national award honouring 

his services to the respiratory 

community. 

Gary received an award in 

the Asthma and Respiratory 

Foundation’s respiratory achievers’ 

awards for his community 

service to those with chronic 

obstructive pulmonary disorder. 

As well as working on his own 

fitness, he began to share the 

benefits of exercise by volunteering 

to run a community exercise 

group for people with COPD in 

Bishopdale. 

Gary was diagnosed with 

COPD himself five years ago, 

which marked a new chapter in 

his life. 

“It was a surprise diagnosis, 

although my father had experienced 

similar issues later in 

his life. My GP sent me along to 

the eight-week breathing programme 

run by the Canterbury 

Clinical Network and that was 

what got me started on my journey,” 

he said. 

Having not been particularly 

physically active previously, the 

course opened his eyes to the 

benefits of exercise in managing 

his condition and getting more 

out of life. 

Said Gary: “COPD can make 

you very tired and exercise 

combats that tiredness. If you 

do nothing, it makes it so much 

worse physically and you can fall 

into a deep, dark hole mentally. 

But if you push through that 

malaise barrier, you feel so much 

better.” 

The group he is involved 

with in Bishopdale started with 

five people, before Covid and 

lockdowns arrived and it was 

disbanded. 

Said Gary: “We got funding 

to restart it in 2020 and it began 

to grow. The group now has 20 

to 25 regular participants and is 

now self-sufficient after losing 

funding last year.” 

The group participants 

collectively nominated Gary 

for the COPD category of 

the respiratory awards. They 

credit its ongoing success to his 

welcoming, friendly attitude and 

dedication to running varied, 

fun sessions. 

In return, the group gives him 

a lot of enjoyment, as well as a 

something to keep him busy in 

his retirement. 

“It has become my passion. 

I’ve enjoyed researching how to 

make the group as beneficial as 

possible. It’s become a well-being 

group; we do brain games, hand 

exercises, yoga, anything that 

improves overall health.” 

The group also attracts people 

who don’t have COPD but want 

to exercise in a non-judgemental 

space. 

“I want it to be open to everyone,” 

said Gary.

Riccarton, CGHS claim titles 

at volleyball championships

RICCARTON and Christchurch 

Girls’ High Schools both 

took out division 1 titles 

at the mainland volleyball 

championships over the 

weekend. 

In the boys’ division 1, Riccarton 

beat Waimea College 3-0 

(25-22, 25-19, 25-23) to win their 

first mainland title since 2016, 

dropping just two sets throughout 

the tournament. 

Riccarton won all their 

matches on Friday and were 

particularly dominant on Saturday, 

winning all four matches in 

three sets. 

Burnside’s senior A boys came 

back from losing their first two 

sets in the third-place playoff 

to win 3-2 (12-25, 22-25, 25-12, 

25-18, 16-14) against Dunedin’s 

King’s High School. 

Last year’s winners, Cashmere 

High, struggled to gain momentum 

after they lost their first two 

matches. They only managed 

to finish eighth after they were 

defeated in the seventh-place 

play-offs by Christ’s College. 

CGHS won the girls’ division 

1 for the first time in a four-set 

final against rivals St Margaret’s 

CHAMPIONS: Riccarton High School’s senior A volleyball team won the boys’ division 1 at 

the mainland volleyball championships for the first time since 2016. 

(25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 27-25) on 

Sunday, while 2022 champions, 

Burnside High, finished third. 

CGHS coach Mark Norton 

said his team have had a unsettled 

build-up to this month’s 

tournaments after losing three 

key players, who graduated from 

school last year. 

“However this has demanded 

that we focus hard and train 

with intensity when we are in the 

volleyball gym.” 

“(Sunday’s) final was extremely 

close, but everyone in the team 

played well in their own role and 

we were very well led by captain 

Angela Reupena,” he said. 

Norton added the team is 

beginning to understand what’s 

required to play at the highest 

level, and as a result, have made 

considerable progress since the 

start of the year. 

Seventy-seven teams from 

across the South Island played 

at Pioneer Stadium, Wharenui 

Stadium, Cowles Stadium, the 

Selwyn Sports Centre and at 

CGHS on Friday and Saturday. 

Teams will now switch 

their focus to the Canterbury 

secondary school championships 

next weekend, which along 

with Monday night games will 

determine seedings for the 

New Zealand secondary school 

championships on March 27-31.

Strong triathlon for Rangi, St Andrew’s

RANGI RURU Girls’ School 

and St Andrew’s College 

triathletes are eyeing up the 

national champs after a strong 

performance at the South Island 

secondary schools competition. 

The Oamaru Multisport 

Club hosted the South Island 

secondary schools triathlon 

on Sunday alongside the 39th 

annual Oamaru Triathlon. 

STAC and Rangi Ruru were 

successful in the junior and 

intermediate grades, which 

consisted of a 300m harbour 

swim, 12km cycle and 2.5km 

run to the finish line. Rangi 

Ruru’s Kate Sharpe finished 

second in the junior girls’ event 

with a time of 41m 40sec, while 

Charlotte Chiles was second 

in the intermediate girls’ race 

and fourth overall with a time 

of 35m 46sec. Charlotte’s good 

form continued after she won 

the under-16 girls’ secondary 

schools Challenge Wānaka last 

month. 

Rangi Ruru’s Finella 

Guttmann finished second in 

the senior girls’ category, which 

consisted of a 750m harbour 

swim, 20km cycle and 5km run, 

with a time of 1hr 12m 46sec. 

STAC’s Connor Walsh was 

second in the intermediate 

boys’ race with a time of 34m 

27sec and second overall out 

of the junior and intermediate 

athletes. Sophie Lampe (STAC) 

won the junior girls event in a 

time of 38m 39sec and was 11th 

overall. 

The athletes are now preparing 

for the New Zealand schools 

triathlon championships at 

Glendhu Bay, Wānaka, from 

March 30-31. Students can 

take part in the triathlon as an 

individual or team, or in the super 

sprint mixed team relay, open 

water swim or team aquathon.
