SALUTE to First Responders Why did you decide to be a fireman? My dad was a JPD officer when I was growing up. He was always helping others so I knew at a young age that I wanted a job that made a difference in a positive way. One of my childhood friends was a fireman at a neighboring department at the time and encouraged me to try out. How long have you been with the Clinton Fire Department? I have been with Clinton for a total of 15 years. Tell us about your family. I have been married to my wife, Erin, of Florence, for 14 years. We have three beautiful children. Eva June is nine and we have twins, Hank and Hattie, who are six. Between travel softball, dance, and Jiu-Jitsu, we are constantly on the go. What is the toughest thing you have experienced in your job? For me, one of the hardest things to do day in and day out is to remain positive. We see a variety of bad situations from structure fires to the passing of loved ones. We have to shine a light during what most people consider the worst day of their lives. Share some things you enjoy doing in your spare time. I enjoy hunting and spending time outdoors. On the rare occasion we have down time, my wife and I enjoy relaxing on the porch. I would like to travel out west and go elk hunting, restore a Chevy pickup, and build a cabin in the country to spend our retirement years. Who is someone you admire and why? I would say my father. He was very strict when I was growing up and would tell you the truth whether you liked it or not. He died from heart cancer when I was 25 years old. He taught me not only how to be a man, but a good husband and father to my own children. He alway took the time to teach me how to fix things and never missed a chance to sit down and talk about life in general. If you could give one piece of advice to a young person, what would it be? Always stay true to yourself. No matter what, keep your word and your faith close. At the end of the day, life is simple. Do not complicate it. What is your favorite thing about Clinton? I really enjoy the small-town feeling of Clinton. The Brick Street Festivals and Fresh at Five are some of my favorite things. When we are out in the truck, we never meet a stranger. What is your favorite thing about Hometown Magazines? It brings small businesses and people behind the scenes to the forefront.
