Debut Screening of Adventure
Film, An Above Average Day
SARATOGA SPRINGS – Filmed in the mountains and wilderness of the Adirondacks and
Vermont, An Above Average Day is a documentary film that poses the question: What
could two men with a 30-year difference in age possibly have in common that would
compel them to climb more than 400 mountains and hike in excess of 4,000 miles of
trails?
Produced and directed by Katera and Aviral Kapoor, An Above Average Day follows
the hiking and wilderness adventures, as well as the plain-old good times, of Ray
O’Conor, age 68 of Saratoga Springs, and Joe Murphy, age 38 of Halfmoon, who met
purely by chance (or fate) on a hiking trip.
Hiking is not just a pastime for these two longtime friends, but their avocation. They
challenge themselves and each other physically in nature, while replenishing themselves
in mind and spirit. The view from atop a mountain, sitting along a forest stream, standing
beneath a thundering waterfall and listening to classic rock and folk music on long rides,
make the troubles of life and the world melt away.
The debut screening of the documentary will take place at the Saratoga Arts Center,
Saratoga Springs on Saturday, April 15 at 2pm, 5pm, and 8pm. Tickets available at: saratoga-arts.org/events.
Canton Canoe Weekend
Returns on May 5-7
MARCH 2023 5
CANTON – The Canton Canoe Weekend is celebrating 61 years on May 5-7. The events
will kick off on the Grasse River with the Friday afternoon Rushton Tour on May 5. The
afternoon paddle will take place between 4-6pm with a flexible start time. The recreational
paddle begins at the Pyrites boat launch and continues downstream 4.5 miles,
concluding at Taylor Park, following along much of the original race course.
On Saturday, May 6, there will be a variety of activities from 9am-4:30pm at Taylor
Park. The day begins with recreational races at 9:30am of one, three, five and eight miles
in length on the Grasse River. There will be a special division in the one-mile and threemile
races for paddlers in Rushton style boats. The recreational races will be followed by
solo canoe and kayak, amateur and pro races, featuring the C-1 Men’s and Women’s Pro
World Championships held on the Grasse and Little Rivers.
Music and a chicken BBQ will be at Taylor Park from 12:30-4pm for picnicking in the
park or for takeout. At 3:30pm the Joe Randi/Rushton Relay Race takes place. This is a
two-mile relay race with classes for family and friends, high school, college and open
division teams.
On Sunday morning May 7, tandem canoe and kayak, amateur and pro races will
begin at 10am. Following the tandem races, you can Try Out a Boat. A variety of adult
and youth recreational and racing canoes, kayaks and standup paddleboards will be
available for a test paddle.
Sunday is also National Ride a Bike Day. Canton Canoe Weekend is partnering with
Grasse River Outfitters to encourage bicyclists to ride to the Park Street boat launch in
Canton to watch racers navigate the Little River, and later, ride to Taylor Park to participate
in the Try Out a Boat session. While recreational races draw many local paddlers,
the pro races attract paddlers from across the United States and Canada. Registration for
all races, the Rushton Tour and the chicken BBQ will open in mid-March. Register and
As this story is being written, there is
still plenty of snow on the ground
in upstate New York. But before you
know it, it will be time for another season of
cycling events to enjoy. This spring offers a
tempting menu that will let cyclists enjoy
the scenery, fellowship and competition.
Three of the most notable early spring
events are organized by the Capital Bicycle
Racing Club, and new members are welcome:
cbrc.cc. But you don’t need to be a
racing fan to enjoy participating.
The club’s big event comes on Sunday,
May 21, as the ninth annual Farmer’s
Daughter Gravel Grinder winds for 65 miles
through the hills and hollows of Columbia
County, based out of the Columbia County
Fairgrounds in Chatham and featuring some
of the most scenic gravel roads you will find
anywhere. Started in 2015, the FDGG has
exploded onto the national gravel riding
scene to become one of the largest rides in
the country. As of early March, almost 1,000
entries have been spoken for, and race organizer
Andy Ruiz says he fully expects it to fill
its 1,200-rider cap.
The Farmer’s Daughter’s unique 65-mile
course includes 6,000 feet of climbing and 45
miles of unpaved roads and even singletrack
trail sections. There’s a fully stocked lunch
stop and rest stops, and riders also get a free
post-race catered meal and those over 21
get a free draught from Chatham Brewery –
where their Farmer’s Daughter Rye IPA lent
its name to the event. To get in on the fun, go
to: bikereg.com.
The club’s other dirt road ride, set for
Saturday, April 15 is the second annual
Toad Strangler Gravel Grinder in Chatham,
drawing its unique name from a nickname
for an intense thunderstorm. The 40-mile
route is already sold out, but there are still
spots open for the casual 10-mile family
ride and the post-ride fun kids’ race held in
Crellin Park. Head online to register for the
open divisions: bikereg.com.
Also, on two consecutive Saturdays, the
Trooper David Brinkerhoff Memorial Race
Series is on April 22 and 29 in Coxsackie.
The race series is dedicated to NYS Trooper
David Brinkerhoff who was killed in the line
of duty in 2007. There are separate race fields
for men, women, and juniors, and a beginner’s
field for first-times – ideal to gauge your
early season fitness even if you’re not a serious
racing cyclist. For info and registration,
visit: bikereg.com.
Speaking of local clubs, Mohawk Hudson
Cycling Club is the Capital Region’s largest
recreational cycling club, established
in 1969, is busy planning their Spring
Kickoff Ride on Saturday, May 13 at Indian
Ladder Farms in Voorheesville; second
annual CycleFest on Saturday, Sept. 9 in
Schaghticoke; and Gravel Goblin gravel
grinder near Halloween. MHCC organizes
a calendar of weekday and weekend rides
designed for a variety of enthusiast and
casual paces and distances, and new riders
are welcome. For club and membership info
to participate in their 300+ social and fitness
rides, go to: mohawkhudsoncyclingclub.org.
Like many of the organizations and
events listed in this story, MHCC will be
staffing a booth with cycling information
and friendly people at the Adirondack Sports
Summer Expo at the Saratoga Springs City
Center on Saturday-Sunday, March 18-19:
adksports.com/summer-expo.
Another spring ride that’s rapidly growing
is the third annual The Great North:
Battenkill Valley, based in Cambridge on
Saturday, May 6, created by Anthem Sports.
Event director, Dieter Drake, is the originator
of Tour of the Battenkill so he knows a thing
or two about putting together a great gravel
route! The full route is 75 miles with lots of
sweet gravel, hills and beautiful views. But if
you haven’t built endurance this early in the
season, there are also shorter routes of 55 and
25 miles with many similar Battenkill features,
plus a nice 25-mile pavement only option.
Riders receive a pint glass, event T-shirt
if registered by April 25, and on-course moto
and sag support, a $15 coupon for post-ride
food trucks, and a free first fill for that pint
glass at the social after-party with live music
at the old train station ride base, Argyle
Brewing. Oh, and free apple pie at the finish
– just do it! For details and entry, check out:
bikereg.com.
Another major event, on Memorial Day
Weekend, Sunday, May 28, is the second
annual Tour de Lewis which winds through
Lewis County’s scenic Black River Valley,
starting near the state forests at Osceola Ski &
Sport Center on the Tug Hill Plateau, and ending
in the Adirondack Park at the Oswegatchie
Education Center that overlooks beautiful
Long Pond. The main 62-mile route goes
from Osceola to Oswegatchie – the “O to O”
ride – and shorter routes are available at 35
and 14 miles, all with timed and recreational
options, plus shuttle and bike transport, to
accommodate riders of all abilities.
The Tour de Lewis includes all the perks
you would expect, with rest stops, sag support,
event T-shirt, and a ride after-party at
Oswegatchie Center with great food, drinks
and music. It’s sponsored by the Adirondack
Foothills Cycling Club, who you can also
meet at the Summer Expo. Keep an eye out
for their Northwinds Gravel Classic on July
16, Short Track MTB Race Series this summer,
and Cycle the St. Lawrence road ride
on Aug. 26. For info and registration, visit:
bikereg.com.
If you’re looking for events where your
participation will benefit worthy causes,
plus help you meet new people and ride
new roads, there are three great events on
each Sunday in May that will help achieve
your goal.
The Tour de Force Charity Run & Bike
Ride will be happening on Sunday, May 7 at
Point Au Roche State Park near Plattsburgh
on Lake Champlain. The event combines
various running events with bike rides of 25
and 50 miles, which highlight the beautiful
roads in scenic Clinton County. This year’s
event will honor and raise funds for the family
of 25-year-old Border Patrol Agent Hunter
LaBombard who was killed in an accident in
January 2023. He is survived by his wife Zoe
and a soon to be born daughter. To learn more
and get registered, go to: runsignup.com.
On Sunday, May 14, Janey’s Ride will
again be happening at Common Roots
Brewing in South Glens Falls. The ride
was originally organized to benefit Janey
Fairchild, the wife of Grey Ghost Bicycles
manager Steve Fairchild. Shortly before
Grey Ghost originally opened, Janey was
diagnosed with breast cancer. After rounds
of treatment in Glens Falls and Boston, she is
now happily in remission, and the ride is held
annually to benefit the Breast Cancer Care &
Research Fund at the Glens Falls Hospital –
to help other families offset costs of cancer
treatment not covered by insurance.
Janey’s Ride features three different paved
routes including a 17-mile paved family ride,
30-mile paved ride, and a 62-mile metric
century that heads across the Hudson River
to ride paved roads in scenic Washington
County, with a short section of road-bikeable
dirt roads. For the ultimate challenge, there’s
also the “Muddy Mother” that will navigate
85 miles on scenic roads that includes 32
miles of rural gravel roads. To register, visit
(you guessed it): bikereg.com.
The finale of this trio of charity events
takes place on Sunday, May 21, as the
19th annual Team Billy Ride & Walk for
MARCH 2023 9
A Springtime Dilemma
By Rich Macha
It has been a somewhat different winter – one
that has been influenced by climate change –
with relatively warm temperatures and a variety
of precipitation. Despite that, winter-lover that I am,
I have managed to get out on my cross-country skis
30 times as of March 1. There were times this winter
when there was little or no snow so I went out hiking
instead – I do enjoy (and need) the exercise, plus I
love to explore wild places in all seasons. The mode
of travel can vary depending on conditions, weather,
and type of destination. Looking ahead, like a box
of chocolates, you never know what you are going
to get in upstate New York, especially in late winter
and early spring.
What follows is a discussion of the relative merits,
considerations, and risks of XC skiing, hiking
and snowshoeing, and paddling in the Adirondack
Park as well as in the surrounding lowland areas of
northern New York during the months of March and
April. One thing that is common to all is the fact that
we will have more daylight to enjoy the activities we
decide to participate in (but bring a headlamp, just in
case). With the internet, it is much easier these days
to get an idea of conditions in locations that we wish
to visit. Pre-trip planning is important to all activities.
Cross-Country Skiing – It is generally not too difficult
to find snow in March, however, finding skiable
snow in April can be a challenge – look for higher
elevations and north-facing slopes. Late last season,
we found good snow on the trail to Second Pond in
the Siamese Ponds Wilderness where the trailhead
lies at an elevation of 2,300 feet. Then on April 19,
the area around Gore Mountain got a dump of well
over a foot of snow and, on the day after, we skied
part of the Raymond Brook Trail plus some of the
surrounding area – all above 2,000 feet in elevation.
In March, the ice on Adirondack lakes and ponds
that are above 1,500 feet in elevation is usually solid,
but, depending on differing factors, melts sometime
in April (see “Paddling” below). I try to pick routes
that avoid stream crossings – a late-season outing to
Camp Santanoni in Newcomb is often doable.
Conditions can be icy when temperatures drop
below freezing but soften up as the temperatures rise
to above 40 degrees. On a warmer day, after several
cold/warm cycles (what I sometimes refer to as
“maple syruping weather”), you may find the ultimate
spring skiing conditions with what is known
as “granulated sugar” or, even better, “corn.” On the
right day, when everything falls into place, I’ve even
been known to ski in shorts!
Hiking and Snowshoeing – Again, how much
snow is on the ground becomes the major consideration,
although the quality of the snow is less important
than it is to the skier. Low elevations can have
zero snow but are likely to be wet and muddy. Higher
elevations can still have snow that is measured in feet
– the Adirondack High Peaks could have snow well
into May. In the Eastern High Peaks Wilderness, you
are required to have snowshoes or skis whenever
there are eight inches of snow on the ground – anywhere
else, it is still good to be prepared with the
right equipment. Icy sections often need the use of
crampons or, at least, microspikes with ice-grabbing
teeth of a half inch or more for traction.
You may be able to walk on top of old, or “rotten,”
snow when the temperature is below freezing, but,
when it warms up, that same snow will lack support
and, without the use of snowshoes, you could be
“post-holing” as your feet plunge into the soft snow
creating holes that can be a foot or more in depth.
Not only is this hard work for the hiker, but whenever
the temperature drops below freezing those holes
become dangerous to other hikers and skiers. If you
are found post-holing, you risk being scolded by other
hikers and ticketed by rangers if in the High Peaks.
At some point in spring, NYSDEC will put out a
“mud season” alert designed to minimize erosion
and damage to the trails and request that hikers stay
off trails above 3,000 feet in elevation until the time
that they have dried out sufficiently. Always check
DEC’s Backcountry Information page before heading
out for the Adirondacks – this information is
normally updated every Thursday: dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9198.html.
If you are looking for views, there are many small
mountains to climb in and around the Adirondacks
where you might find drier trails. For instance, the
Lake George area has many peaks in the 2,000-foot
elevation range, such as Cat and Thomas mountains,
where you can find vistas to satisfy your soul. You
may also be able to find a variety of hikes in preserves
and conserved lands not far from where you live.
With spring snowmelt, waterfall hikes can be especially
rewarding.
Paddling – Ice-out on most Adirondack ponds
and lakes usually occurs in mid to late April. Streams
and rivers become ice-free even sooner. You may be
able to find open water in the Mohawk Valley and on
the tidal Hudson River in March and there is a good
chance that when you read this that Lake George and
Lake Champlain are ice-free. However, I see one big
problem: the water is very cold and a capsize can
be lethal. Sudden immersion in cold water can overcome
the strongest of swimmers. It may lead to cardiac
arrest, drowning as a result of a gasp reflex and
inhalation of water, a loss of swimming ability and
grip strength, and eventually hypothermia or death.
After spending the winter looking at photos of
past trips on social media, it is very tempting for
some folks to get on the water as soon as possible.
Whitewater paddlers have always looked forward to
spring paddling when snow melt has made certain
rivers and streams runnable before they are reduced
to rock gardens in the summer months. A wetsuit has
been standard equipment for decades and many of
those whitewater paddlers have since moved on to
wearing dry suits, a better but much more expensive
option. Admittedly, there is a greater chance of capsize
in whitewater than on flatwater, but I have seen
enough occurrences on the latter so as to believe that
it can happen.
Experts will always tell you to dress for the water
temperature and not the air temperature – something
to consider when it is 70 degrees out but the
water is only 40 degrees.
Whitewater paddlers learn to roll their kayaks
– most recreational kayakers do not. A swim in
whitewater usually lasts no more than five minutes
before shore is reached – a swim in the middle of
Lake George could mean you could be immersed for
much longer. Solo paddlers should be practiced in
self-rescue, and group participants should be practiced
in assisted rescues.
My advice to paddlers who are itching to get out
before May is to become more skilled, understand
the dangers, or head south – southern Jersey, the
Delmarva Peninsula, and North Carolina are wonderful
paddling destinations in April. Always wear a
properly-fitting PFD (personal flotation device, aka
life jacket) – required from November 1 through May
1 in New York State but the sensible thing to do all
the time.
Each season has its merits, so find a way to enjoy
what New York has to offer when it comes to outdoor
recreation during springtime.
A lover of wild places, Rich Macha has led many
trips for the Adirondack Mountain Club, and has
spent 20 years in the paddle/snowsport business.
RUNNING & WALKING
MARCH 2023 11
On Your Mark,
Get Set, Go…
CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge
By Ben Heller & Chris Bishop
The CDPHP Workforce Team
Challenge, the largest running and
walking event in the Capital Region,
is coming up on Thursday, May 18 at
6:25pm at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.
It’s organized by and serves as the major
fundraiser for the Hudson-Mohawk Road
Runners Club, and the welcoming event is a
rite of passage in the local running community.
Runners and walkers complete a 3.5-
mile loop around Washington Park, which is
a hub of activity all year. Registration is open
for business and organization teams of all
sizes with a registration deadline of May 1.
The challenge is open to all fitness levels
from runners, joggers and walkers. The large
number of participants creates a sense of
excitement and energy in downtown Albany
as people come together to celebrate fitness,
teamwork and camaraderie. The size of the
event is important as it provides an opportunity
for local businesses and non-profit
organizations to showcase their commitment
to health and wellness, and to support
the community in a tangible way. CDPHP is
now in its 13th year as the primary sponsor.
This Workforce Team Challenge can also
change lives. Many people join to support
their fellow workmates but have never run.
However, as they train, many come to enjoy
running and pursue the sport further advancing
from 5Ks to half marathons, and possibly
even marathons! How healthy can you get?
The benefits could mean losing weight, feeling
more fit, and finding a new passion.
Supporting the Community – Each
year, in conjunction with the race, HMRRC
and CDPHP select one or more charities of
choice, each of which receives a donation
from CDPHP, as well as direct contributions
from race participants. The 2023 charity of
choice is Trinity Community Center, which
is an open table for the people of Rotterdam
and the Schenectady area, where neighbors
of all backgrounds can gather safely
and without judgement to support, learn
and grow together. The “three legs” are food
security, mental health and wellbeing, and
arts, culture and self-expression. Funds
raised via WTC will be used to fund the
expansion of the Bread of Life Food Pantry
and Produce Pantry programs, which served
30,000 meals to those in need from June
through December 2022. Trinity also offers
yoga, free movie and board game nights,
crafting groups, and Zumba. To learn more,
visit: messiahschenectady.org.
Over the history of the race, hundreds
of thousands of dollars have been raised to
help charities that serve our community.
The proceeds also help underwrite many of
HMRRC’s activities and offerings, including
college scholarships, grants, free races for
club members, and their Just Run program,
which encourages grade school children to
run for exercise and fun.
Making it Fun – A creative part of the
event is seeing the wild array of T-shirts
that corporate, non-profit, and education
teams create and wear during the challenge.
HMRRC photographers will take photos of
teams wearing their shirts and post them
on the WTC website and club’s Pace Setter
newsletter. Companies and organizations
are encouraged to enter their designs into
the T-shirt contest. It’s an opportunity to
bond with your teammates to design your
very own shirt. Visit the website for details.
Judging takes place prior to race night, with
prizes for most motivational, humorous,
corporate, and best overall. The winning
shirts line the post-race awards ceremony
area at Empire State Plaza.
Registration – Each organization that
participates requires a team captain, who is
responsible for setting up their team in the
portal. For employees to register, the captain
must setup or update that team’s information.
There’s also a virtual team option. The
team captain spreads the word to colleagues
to encourage them to participate. Results are
scored based on four-person teams (all male,
all female, coed). Individual awards will go to
the top three male female overall; team awards
will go to the top five female, male and coed
teams; and team participation awards will go
to the largest three teams in five categories.
Come run or walk on a wonderful spring
evening through the City of Albany’s beautiful
tree-lined streets. Whether you run, walk,
volunteer, or cheer at the CDPHP Workforce
Team Challenge, you’ll be supporting a worthy
cause that improves our community. Be
sure to register your team before the May 1
deadline. If you’re not running or walking,
volunteers are needed and welcome. For
complete details, visit: cdphpwtc.com.
Spring Special – The Hudson Mohawk
Road Runners Club is offering a free threemonth
trial club membership when you sign
up for the 2023 CDPHP Workforce Team
Challenge! All registered participants can
opt-in to receive a free three-month membership.
Details to sign-up will be included in
email confirmations upon race registration.
According to club president, Ravi
Chauhan, membership includes discounts
on HMRRC races, 10 free club races (winter
series, summer XC runs and more),
Pace Setter newsletter, making connections
and Running Buddies programs, and an
opportunity to improve your physical and
mental well-being. Current members can
meet these new running partners. Getting
involved encourages you and your coworkers
to enjoy running and walking with a lineup
of progressive races this spring, summer
and fall. For more info, go to: hmrrc.com.
MOUNTAIN STAGE RACE IN
WAITSFIELD, VT., SEPT. 2022.
By Alex Kochon
Evan Boyle’s twist of fate came in the form of an excruciating
ankle injury in January 2020. A misstep at indoor
soccer practice tore every ligament in his right ankle,
sidelining him for the rest of the season, and leaving him
unable to walk for three months.
During that time, the global pandemic began. Team
sports were put on pause while Evan, then a 15-year-old soccer
player and swimmer at Niskayuna High School, worked
on healing his ankle. In March of that year, his doctor suggested
biking for rehab. What started as 30 minutes on a stationary
bike quickly progressed to longer outdoor rides, giving
him a sense of independence. “As soon as we got into our
Covid lockdown, I wanted to go out and do stuff, so I would
explore places on my bike,” said Evan, now 18. “It was really
a great way to explore where I lived and more… all of the
Capital Region.”
If you ask Evan, before his injury, he wasn’t much of a
biker – he just rode to school every day of fifth grade. But
according to his mother, Cynthia, he had been biking since
age four when he rode beside her on runs. “He refused to
get into a stroller once he could walk,” explained Cynthia,
a former triathlete and runner. Her brothers, Evan’s uncles,
were competitive cyclists. One completed the Race Across
America with the Wounded Warriors in 2012.
Evan raced his first triathlon when he was five, the
“Anyone Can Tri” kids’ triathlon at the Southern Saratoga
YMCA in Clifton Park. When he was 11, he won the Army
West Point Triathlon in West Point. “He wasn’t exactly riding
around the neighborhood like the other kids,” Cynthia noted.
“He’s always had a lot more endurance and grit than most
kids, and I think we just tried to channel his energy.”
On his 16th birthday, Evan received an upgraded road
bike from his uncle’s son-in-law. With the DMV closed and
his pursuit of a driver’s license paused, cycling became
Evan’s outlet.
From Riding to Racing – That summer of 2020, Evan dabbled
in road bike time trials hosted by the Capital Bicycle
Racing Club. Because of social-distancing regulations, the
time trials lacked some fanfare; riders showed up, raced individually
on a 10-mile course, and had their time recorded. It
didn’t take long for CBRC vice president Andy Ruiz to notice
Evan. “His time was unbelievable,” Andy recalled. “I said to
him, ‘Have you ever thought about bike racing? You have a
lot of natural ability.’”
Andy invited Evan to join CBRC group rides, where he
quickly caught the bug. “I started learning all of the race craft
and the dynamics of racing,” Evan explained. “That year, I
did about as well as you could expect I could do. I was pretty
average, I guess. I won a race, and that got me hooked.”
■ EVAN, 11, AFTER WINNING
HIS FIRST RACE, THE ARMY
WEST POINT TRIATHLON.
One year later, at the start of a new cycling season, Evan
turned heads at the 2021 Tour of the Battenkill, a 75-mile
road and gravel race in Washington County. After starting
about 10 minutes behind the pros, he caught many Category
(Cat) 1, 2 and pro riders, and won the men’s junior 15-18
division by nearly 20 minutes. “From my perspective, that
was kind of eye-opening,” said Evan’s father, Don Boyle.
“That was shocking.”
With few races to enter due to the pandemic, Evan continued
to train and compete that summer, learning more
about race tactics like cornering, drafting, and pack riding
over time. Andy started formally coaching him the following
winter, and by the spring of 2022, Evan was winning more
races and gaining recognition regionally.
Starting as a novice Cat 4/5 rider, he quickly rose through
the ranks to reach Cat 1 as a junior at the USA Cycling Amateur
Road National Championships. There, he placed fifth in the
junior 17-18 time trial, “beating some of the best kids in the
country with only a year of riding,” Andy noted.
At that point, Andy knew he needed to get Evan racing at
the international level. He convinced a fellow coach to bring
Evan with his team to the Tour de l’Abitibi, a junior road-biking
stage race in Quebec. In Canada, a few US national-team
athletes could not race due to Covid, and Evan – a strong
albeit inexperienced rider – was asked to fill one of their
spots. “Long story short, two days in, he wins the individual
time trial, and he beats the junior world champion,” Andy
explained. “That’s like, OK, this kid’s going somewhere. He
was riding like 31 miles an hour. That’s ridiculous.”
After six straight days of racing well over 400 miles total,
Evan finished eighth overall in the Canadian tour. Then, with
Andy’s help, he took his racing to Europe and won a stage
race in Austria against some of the world’s top juniors. Then
he went to Spain, where he placed fifth in the first stage of the
Vuelta Junior a la Ribera Del Duero, a 64-mile road race. “It’s
one thing to be great in your country, but it’s another thing to
be one of the best in the world,” Andy said of Evan’s results.
Nature of the Beast – At the second stage of the Spanish
tour, Evan suffered the worst crash of his career. A previous
pileup had punctured his front wheel, but he kept riding
on the flat while he waited for another bike. While doing
so, unable to maneuver his front wheel, he collided with a
team car. His bicycle slid underneath the car, snapping the
handlebars in half. “There’s an Evan-sized dent in a Spanish
team car,” Evan recalled with a laugh. “I ended up getting
another bike from our team, and I rode for another maybe
30 minutes.”
At that point, he realized his leg was bleeding badly and
was in significant pain. “I felt really grim, so I called it in… I
wish I didn’t,” Evan said.
The crash shook him up, but it didn’t deter him from continuing
to pursue cycling professionally. “Racing is stressful
because you have to worry about crashes, positioning yourself,
and all the other riders on two wheels that are trying to be
where you want to be,” he explained. “Just knowing eventually
I’m going to crash and I have to be prepared to pick myself up
and keep riding, that’s probably the most difficult part for me
to deal with, where I have to just accept it’s going to happen.”
It’s also been stressful for Evan’s parents, who worry about
his safety when sharing the road with motorists. Don said
he steered him away from football for fear of concussions.
“We were apprehensive about it,” Don said of road biking.
“Imagine your children are out on a bicycle 30 miles away,
and in this case, he’s 16, 17 and gets a flat, gets hit by a car,
you’re kind of worried about that sort of stuff.”
Last month, while training at his grandfather’s home in
Arizona, Evan had planned on riding with the West Cycle
Valley Club on Feb. 25. He overslept and missed the ride.
That morning, a driver crashed a pickup truck into the
group, killing two and injuring 11 of them. “Cycling safety
is of paramount importance and it never leaves my mind,”
Cynthia stated.

■ A YOUNG EVAN
GOT HIS START
PLAYING SOCCER.
Two years ago, when Evan began venturing farther from
home on his bike, they put a Life360 tracking app on his
phone. That way, if he had a mechanical issue or needed their
help, they could locate him. “I think for a kid that age, it was
channeling that need for independence as well as rehabbing
and developing,” Don recalled. “It’s a positive thing when kids
are doing stuff like that, so you can’t argue with it too much.”
The Big Stage – An experienced coach and cyclist who
raced at a high level, Andy instantly recognized Evan’s potential
and urged him to take cycling to the next level. As last
season drew to a close, they reached out to several semi-pro
teams, pitching his work ethic, natural ability, and what Andy
called a “huge engine” above his lack of experience.
At 6-feet, 2-inches tall and about 170 pounds, Evan is built
for time trials and going really fast on flatter terrain. He swam
competitively until last year, excelling in the freestyle and
butterfly distance events, and has muscle mass remaining
from that sport. He’s not a twig like many of the riders in the
professional peloton, and he hasn’t been racing for nearly as
long as many of the top juniors. Most get their start around
age 11 or 12. Evan started at 16.
This past January, he signed with Aevolo, a U23 elite
cycling team. He’s the youngest of 10 riders on the team, ages
18 to 23, and the only one born in 2004. As it was explained to
them, Evan was Aevolo’s “wildcard selection in that he’d only
been racing for a year,” Don said. “But he had what looked to
be some remarkable capabilities.”
Evan graduated high school half a year early in mid-January
2023, finishing his senior year after completing all his
necessary credits. An exceptional math student, he had fulfilled
all his math requirements by ninth grade and took a
multivariable calculus course at the University at Albany last
fall. He also captained his high-school soccer team and was
named MVP this past season.
Now a fully supported cyclist with Aevolo, which covers
his travel and most living expenses while on the road, Evan –
who’s also on the US national U23 team – is adjusting to life
as a full-time athlete. Shortly after finishing up at Niskayuna
High, he flew to his grandfather’s in Surprise, Ariz., to train
before his first team camp in Los Angeles.
The team provided him with a “home bike” to keep at
home and other bikes for training and racing on the road. In
all, Evan said he has about 10 bicycles.
Looking back on his rapid rise in cycling, from biking to
school to riding 500, sometimes 600 miles a week for training,
Evan said it’s been fun. He doesn’t struggle with motivation; he
gets out and rides all the time – to the tune of about five hours
a day, five days a week. “It’s not quite an addiction, but it might
be,” Evan said with a laugh. “It’s something that if you really
love it, it’s not really a problem. It’s not a chore; it’s not a job.”
At his first training camp with Aevolo in February, Evan
learned a lot about bike handling and descending at high
speeds. It was also his first-time riding in a team environment.
With CBRC, he often rode alone because, frankly, no
one could keep up with him. “There are so many guys that are
so much more adept at racing, so there’s always things I can
learn,” he said of Aevolo and cycling at an elite level. “It’s just
a wealth of information that all these guys have, and they’re
willing to share with you.”
After the weeklong team camp, he was selected to
Aevolo’s A-squad and given the opportunity to race on the
Aegean Islands in Greece. These races, which Evan called
“proper Euro races,” each entail four to five hours of racing
over 100 miles per day. He’s signed up for three events
from March 3-18: Visit South Aegean Islands, International
Rhodes Grand Prix, and International Tour of Rhodes stage
race. “I’m pretty much the dead bottom of my age group, so
if I show that I’m good in Greece, it opens up a lot of doors
for me for the rest of the season,” he said.
While he was nervous about testing his form in Europe,
he was also excited. His coach, Andy, who said he’s never
■ RACING TO FIRST
CLASSIC IN STONY
POINT.
had an athlete progress to this level with so little experience,
is eager to see what he can do. “What makes Evan incredibly
unique is that he went from racing local races, and within a
couple of years, he’s turned pro and is racing at some of the
biggest U23 races in the world,” Andy said. “Of all the years
of coaching and being in the Capital District, I’m not sure
I’ve ever seen anybody make the leaps that he’s done in that
short of time.
“His focus is unbelievable, probably the best I’ve ever
seen of anybody,” Andy added. “His ability to train relentlessly,
week in and week out, month after month, without getting
tired, never letting things deter him. He has one of the most
incredible mindsets of any athlete I’ve ever met.”
Given his physiology, genetic disposition, and relatively
new entry into the sport, Andy said he thinks the sky is the
limit for Evan – even if less than 1% of the population makes
it to the top-tier pro level. “He’s going to get quite a bit stronger,”
Andy predicted. “This is the first year of his professional
journey… who knows what will happen.”
In terms of his long-term goals with cycling, Evan said his
dream would be to win world championships. At the same
time, he doesn’t see himself chasing this sport aimlessly.
“When I get to the point where the road ends, I don’t want to
force it beyond that,” he said. “I’d like to see where I can get
to, but I don’t want to blindly carry on if I’m not really going
to get that much better.”
“To be 18 and have that kind of adventure, it’s really cool,”
Don acknowledged. “It’s entirely possible he’s good enough
that he will be able to continue with cycling, but also, he’s
really good at math. I work at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory.
I work with a lot of engineers, and Evan reminds me of those
guys. They can figure out a problem really well.”
Locking in Total Body Fitness
By Kristen Jurcsak
We’ve all been there, or at least most of us
have. That point where reality sets in and
we and say to ourselves, “Ok, I need to
lose some weight and improve my fitness.” Whether
it’s shedding a few extra holiday pounds or committing
to lose a significant amount of weight, the first
thing most of us do is kick start the cardio. I can speak
from experience. I’ve struggled to maintain a healthy
weight my entire life and I’ve tried literally everything
in the book to do it.
Looking back at my fitness history, I always lost
steam when my weight plateaued and I became physically
and mentally burned out with cardio routines
that appeared to stop working after some initial success.
Instead of asking myself what was happening
and why, I usually just got frustrated and lost my focus
thinking the problem was me, my body. Proper nutrition,
of course, is vitally important because it is impossible
to work off a poor diet. But in addition to nutrition,
what I didn’t realize was that not incorporating
strength training was holding me back from achieving
my full fitness potential.
Now don’t get me wrong, cardiovascular exercise
is extremely important to improve and maintain our
health. The default American lifestyle is sedentary and
people need to make time to move. “Use it or lose it”
as they say. A sedentary lifestyle means that people are
gradually becoming weaker over time. Cardiovascular
exercise helps us lose body fat and maintain a healthy
weight, increases stamina, and boosts our immune
systems. Cardio strengthens the heart and keep arteries
clear, reduces health risks such as obesity, heart
disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke,
certain cancers, and keeps muscles stronger as we
age. And as with all forms of exercise, getting our
hearts pumping improves mood, combats anxiety
and depression, promotes relaxation, improves sleep,
and elevates our mental well-being and self-esteem.
Unfortunately, cardio alone is not enough to reach that
metabolic balance needed to feel our best.
Most people, especially women, are reluctant to
strength train. While about half of us do the recommended
amount of aerobic activity each week, only
20% also do the strengthening moves that work major
muscle groups. Strength training can be intimidating
if you don’t know much about it or where to start.
People tend to think taking a day off from cardio is a
waste a time because they won’t be burning as many
calories or that strength training is going to cause their
body to “bulk up.” Neither myth could be further from
the truth.
Strength training is any type of exercise that
involves your own body weight or equipment to build
muscle mass, endurance, and strength. It does not
have to involve heavy weights, and for most people,
effective strength training does not. It can include
using your own body weight as resistance, using conventional
free weights or kettlebells, resistance bands,
or weight machines in a gym. Strength training is critical
for building and maintaining lean muscle mass.
Lean muscle mass naturally diminishes with age and
body fat percentage will increase if no action is taken
to replace the muscle lost over time. Building lean
muscle mass increases metabolism and improves our
ability to burn calories more efficiently. The stronger
we are, the more calories and fat we burn, even when
our bodies are resting.
Strength training can also increase bone density
and may slow or even stop the progression of osteoporosis,
added benefits for women. It improves mobility,
flexibility, protects joints from injury, and may reduce
the risk of falls in older adults. Strength training helps
manage the same chronic health conditions as cardiovascular
exercise, as well as arthritis, back pain, and
MARCH 2023 25
other orthopedic conditions. Combined with cardio,
strength training can even sharpen critical thinking
skills and improve brain health. And let’s not forget
those awesome endorphins, being physically stronger
make us mentally stronger.
I discovered strength training, in July of 2021. I
love coached workouts and thrive following routines.
I needed to find evening classes doing something on
my way home from work. A friend shared an article
about a new kettlebell gym in South Glens Falls called
Simple Strength and Conditioning. I read it, was interested,
and I decided to check it out. I met kettlebell
trainer, Ryan Carpenter, and after my first few classes I
was hooked. Ryan took the time to teach me the right
way to strength train and openly shared his personal
fitness journey. If your goal is to burn fat, increase
strength, and build endurance, then strength training
with kettlebells is a great tool.
An effective kettlebell workout combines strength
training and cardio for amazing results. While traditional
weights are about low reps and more weight,
kettlebell-specific exercises are designed for higher,
faster repetitions performed at specific intervals.
Properly performed kettlebell exercises have a very
low impact on joints and provide a total body workout
that includes the core, big time. Yes, you can work up
to lifting very heavy kettlebells, but certainly don’t have
to max out on weight to maximize results. I was able to
build my strength and endurance and burn an insane
amount of body fat, specifically abdominal fat, with
kettlebells following the workouts.
Since July 2021, I’ve dropped four pant sizes, lost
14 pounds, reduced my body fat percentage by 4%,
and gained two pounds of skeletal muscle mass. My
entire body has changed with strength training in ways
I never thought possible. Visit: simplestrengthconditioning.com.
Becky Weyrauch, personal trainer, and owner
of Rock Your Fitness in Malta, incorporates strength
training into full body workouts, an approach called
metabolic training. Strength training has evolved over
time and she described it best to me as muscle endurance
training. Becky coaches both body weighted and
traditional resistance training exercises. Becky’s total
body fitness approach combines strength training and
cardio, as she coaches clients through a series of fitness
stations. Each station is worked on a different interval,
depending on format. Every muscle is worked starting
with larger muscle groups first.
Switching up her workouts is important to Becky
because she believes it keeps her clients’ minds
involved. Workouts should appeal to all senses. All fitness
levels are always welcome at Rock Your Fitness.
Becky demonstrates the exercises to newbies before
the workout starts and stays with them through the circuit.
Becky summed up everything perfectly, “Balance
is important and getting strong does not mean being
stuck in a gym. I fully believe we just have to keep moving
– motion is lotion for our joints and muscles.” Go
to: rockyourfitnessny.com.
What are the keys to effective strength training?
Again, balance. Find a strength training class, gym or
routine you enjoy that fits your lifestyle and appeals
to you. Meet workout buddies and get stronger with
your friends. Listen to your trainer or coach because
they know what they’re talking about! Less is more.
Effective strength training can be accomplished in two
to three sessions a week. Combine strength training
and cardio to build your complete fitness repertoire
and alternate workout days.
Mix it up and cross train to keep your workouts
interesting. Add lower intensity activities like yoga
and walking. Our bodies love active recovery. Take
your workouts outside and go for a hike or bike ride.
Listen to your body and give yourself forgiveness. You
are allowed, and should take, rest days. Most of all,
have fun so fitness becomes who you are and not just
something you do.
NON-MEDICATED LIFE
Sleep
Is Your Lifestyle
Helping or
Hurting?
By Paul E. Lemanski,
MD, MS, FACP
Medicines are a mainstay of American
life and the healthcare system not only
because they are perceived to work by the
individuals taking them, but also because their
benefit may be shown the objective assessment
of scientific study. Clinical research trials
have shown that some of the medicines of
Western science may reduce the risk of heart
attacks, strokes and cardiovascular death.
In the first 107 installments of the Non-
Medicated Life, certain dietary practices and
a healthy lifestyle have been shown to accomplish
naturally for the majority of individuals
most of the benefits of medications in the
prevention and treatment of chronic medical
conditions such as obesity, hypertension, high
cholesterol, and diabetes that increase the risk
for cardiovascular disease and death.
What is not generally appreciated is that
certain dietary practices and a healthy lifestyle
can also significantly improve our ability to
get a good night’s sleep. This is important not
only because the over reliance on prescription
and over-the-counter sleeping pills encourages
a dependency with inherent risk, but also
because achieving a naturally arrived at good
night’s sleep improves overall health in multiple
ways.
Most all of us are aware of the benefits of a
good night’s sleep because of the way it makes
us feel: refreshed, energetic, mood enhanced,
and restored. Lack of sleep or poor sleep makes
us feel just the opposite. However, apart from
Editor’s Note: This is the 108th in a series on
optimal diet and lifestyle to help prevent and
treat disease. Any planned change in diet,
exercise or treatment should be discussed with
and approved by your personal physician before
implementation. The help of a registered dietitian
in the implementation of dietary changes is
strongly recommended.
how it makes us feel, chronic loss of sleep or
poor sleep may worsen medical conditions
and in the extreme manifestation called sleep
apnea may cause hypertension, arrhythmia,
heart failure, and even death. To understand
why this is so, let’s first address the questions,
what is sleep and what makes for a healthy
night’s sleep?
Sleep – both what occurs while we are
sleeping and why it occurs – has been a mystery
since humans achieved conscious awareness.
It is characterized by a decrease in responsiveness,
muscular activity, and metabolic rate
occurring typically for eight out of 24 hours.
It is a nearly universal process occurring in all
animal species in some form. This suggests an
evolutionary origin related most probably to
exposure to day/night cycles. The purpose of
sleep is not well understood, but it has been
suggested that conservation of energy, restoration
and repair of tissues and body structure,
and memory consolidation and problem solving
may all play a part.
Sleep from a medical and scientific standpoint
is best described with the use of a polysomnogram
or sleep study. The sleep study in
its most rigorous form measures brain waves
via an electroencephalogram (EEG), and sensors
for eye movements, muscle activity, respiratory
rate, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and
leg movements. With this approach, sleep may
be shown to be made up of rapid eye movement
(REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM)
sleep. It may be further categorized into discreet
stages, occurring four or five times during
the night, making up what is referred to as an
individual’s sleep architecture.
Initially, most individuals enter sleep
through non-REM, which has three stages: 1)
stage N1 (or light sleep) accounting for fiveto-10%
of sleep time begins with a fall in respiratory
rate and heart rate; 2) stage N2 accounting
for 45-55% of sleep time is characterized by
further slowing of pulse and respiration and a
decrease in body temperature; and, 3) stage
N3 (or deep sleep) accounting for 10-20% of
sleep time is characterized by repair of tissues
and body structures, strengthening of immune
function, the restoration of energy stores and
the release of hormones such as testosterone.
REM sleep or stage R is characterized by
changes in EEG, eye movements that are rapid
and darting and a marked reduction in muscle
activity and muscle tone. Stage R is also associated
with vivid dreaming and may be a time
of memory consolidation and the processing of
the day’s emotions and sensory input.
Each stage may be altered both positively
and negatively by medications, drugs or alcohol,
but also by certain behaviors. For example,
stage R may be delayed or suppressed by
alcohol, sedatives, tricyclic antidepressants,
and antidepressants known as selective serotonin
reuptake inhibitors or selective serotonin
reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are a widely
used type of antidepressant medication.
Heavy alcoholic use is associated with an
increased risk of REM sleep behavior disorder,
a condition in which the usual muscle paralysis
during dreaming does not occur, resulting
in a flailing of arms and legs during REM.
Choosing to go to bed late and awakening early
by alarm may decrease REM because the longest
periods of REM typically occur at the end
of the sleep cycle. Although further studies are
needed to confirm the risks of decreased REM,
a retrospective 2020 study published in JAMA
Neurology, suggested that every 5% decrease in
REM sleep was associated with a 13% greater
risk of dying from all causes over the subsequent
20 years.
Moreover, several sleep disorders are related
to abnormalities of sleep stage. For example,
narcolepsy may occur in those who have Stage R
very early in their sleep architecture. Hypoxia or
low oxygen levels in the blood may occur in those
with emphysema when the intercostal muscle
and the diaphragm contraction is reduced during
Stage R. Finally, the most dangerous sleep disorder,
obstructive sleep apnea is exacerbated by
the muscular relaxation and decreased tone that
occurs in the throat during REM.
MARCH 2023 27
In the case of sleep apnea, snoring which
represents partial obstruction of the airway,
may progress to complete obstruction and
apnea or a cessation of breathing. During the
apneic period oxygen in the blood falls and carbon
dioxide rises and the individual is forced
to avoid the deeper more restorative stages of
sleep. The result is an increase in hypertension,
heart arrhythmia, and heart failure, which
may be life threatening. Moreover, sedatives
– including prescription sleeping pills – may
significantly worsen sleep apnea and their use
is actually contraindicated.
Avoiding such abnormalities of sleep stage
may be aided by relatively simple dietary and
behavioral lifestyle choices. First, it is important
to practice good “sleep hygiene.” Retiring
and awakening at the same time will help regularize
sleep stages. A consistent meal schedule
may help as well. Avoiding alcohol and stimulants
such as caffeine and nicotine, especially
in the latter half of the day is important to
preserving adequate REM sleep. Avoiding blue
light from computers and cell phone screens
for at least two hours prior to retiring may significantly
aid falling to sleep. Moreover, a cool,
dark room in which to sleep and exposure to
bright sunlight upon awakening will further
help regularize sleep stages. Finally, losing
weight if overweight or obese can effectively
improve apneic periods.
In summary, dietary practices and behavioral
lifestyle choices can help correct sleep
stage abnormalities including sleep disorders
such as sleep apnea. Avoidance of alcohol and
stimulants and a recognition of the adverse
effects of some medications on sleep stage
abnormalities may suggest the use of alternative
medications or medication discontinuation,
as appropriate. In this way a healthy diet
and lifestyle may improve sleep with both an
enhanced sense of well-being and objective
health benefit.
