Mike Andrews (SH 1940-45)<br />
Mike Andrews was born on 6th November 1926. He was a<br />
great oarsman and rowed <strong>no</strong>t only for Shrewsbury, but also<br />
for Oxford and Harvard Universities. He had a successful<br />
merchant banking career in the City, was Director of various<br />
companies and sat on the Council of Lloyds Insurance. He<br />
continued working until well into his 80s.<br />
Mike was a passionate fisherman and loved spending time<br />
fishing in Scotland.<br />
He was a very modest man, with a dry sense of humour<br />
and a ready wit. He died on 30th July 2016 aged 89 and is<br />
survived by his wife Sylvia.<br />
Frank Cassels (I 1933-37)<br />
Frank Cassels was born on 3rd September 1919 in Bue<strong>no</strong>s<br />
Aries, Argentina. He joined Shrewsbury School in 1933 and<br />
had fond memories of his time there. After leaving school<br />
he joined the Indian Army, serving with them until 1947.<br />
He then served a further eight years with the Royal Artillery,<br />
achieving the rank of Major.<br />
He married Anne in 1957 and<br />
spent the rest of his working<br />
life farming in Wiltshire, Dorset<br />
and Devon, where he built up<br />
a successful dairy herd. <strong>The</strong>y<br />
retired to the Isle of Man.<br />
Frank died peacefully in<br />
Okehampton in October 2016.<br />
He is survived by his five sons<br />
and 13 grandchildren.<br />
David Cave (SH 1953-57)<br />
David Cave was born on 16th September 1939 and lived<br />
most of his early life with his parents at Seisdon Hall in South<br />
Staffordshire. He attended Birchfield School, Wolverhampton<br />
before coming to Shrewsbury in 1953, to be followed later by<br />
his brother, Malcolm (SH 1957-60).<br />
During his time at Shrewsbury, David developed a keen<br />
interest in photography and was a very active and supportive<br />
member of the School’s Photographic Society. His talent and<br />
burgeoning abilities for this art form provided the foundation<br />
for what was to be a career in photography that spanned<br />
more than half a century.<br />
David further developed his skills at Wednesbury College<br />
where he met his wife, Lynne. <strong>The</strong>y were married in 1964<br />
and had two daughters, Elizabeth Needham-Bennett, a<br />
senior producer with BBC News in London, and Kathryn<br />
Wright, Clinical Veterinary Director with West Midlands based<br />
Connaught Veterinary Practice.<br />
David worked as an industrial and commercial photographer,<br />
documenting huge changes in tech<strong>no</strong>logy and travelled all<br />
over the world for companies such as Kvaerner, Trafalgar<br />
House, Pioneer Concrete, British Steel/Corus/Tata, Hotpoint,<br />
Can<strong>no</strong>n and Creda. His photographs recorded life in the<br />
West Midlands and documented the glass industry in Brierley<br />
Hill. He was also the official photographer for the Princess of<br />
Wales when she visited Wolverhampton in 1992.<br />
Throughout his life, David devoted himself <strong>no</strong>t only to his<br />
family, but also to the service of others. A committed Rotarian<br />
(founder member of Tettenhall Rotary Club), he became a<br />
major player having twice received the Special Paul Harris<br />
Fellowship Sapphire Award for his service to the community<br />
through Rotary. <strong>The</strong>ir motto “Service before self” sums up
