Recipe for success:
Chicken noodle soup
GOLD: Amelia Sykes
claimed seven elite titles
at the national track
cycling championships.
PHOTO: JAMES JIBB
• By Jaime Cunningham
AMELIA SYKES has a few
techniques she likes to use to
win races. She takes a deep
breath at the starting gate, tries
not to overthink it – and makes
sure she eats her mum’s chicken
noodle soup.
And after her success at
the national track cycling
championships, there is no
doubting her technique.
Sykes, 18, claimed seven
elite titles across a range of
events at the championships
in Invercargill. It was the most
successful nationals to date for
the former Avonside Girls’ High
School student, and her sixth
appearance at the event.
“It’s been my best year and
probably the highest level I’ve
ever raced in,” she said.
Sykes, who has previously
trained at Cycling New Zealand
high performance camps,
dominated the endurance
events, winning the 3000m
individual pursuit final (3m
37.5sec) and points race,
finishing with 41. She was also
the only rider to collect 20 bonus
points for lapping the field.
Sykes also took out the
combined team pursuit title,
scratch and elimination honours,
as well as the 500m time trial
(36.2sec) and team sprint.
25,000
plants for
wetlands
near
rest home
RYMAN Healthcare has joined
with the city council in a bid to
improve and safeguard the area
around a new Ryman-Northwood
retirement village.
The partnership will see
about 25,000 plants added into
the wetlands which feed the
Pūharakekenui Styx River, such
as native grasses and shrubs, plus
a few cabbage trees. There will
be dozens of varieties, including
some bigger trees.
There will also be a fish
passageway, including a riprap
from the Styx into the wetland
channels. The design has been
agreed between Ryman and
the city council. Environment
Canterbury is also overseeing the
project.
Ryman senior site manager Paul
Cameron said the wetlands are a
stormwater system, taking all the
storm and surface water from the
project (even when it gets to the
completed village stage) into the
wetlands.
Cameron said down the side of
the site there is a ‘Curtis drain’,
collecting stormwater from the
Northwood Supa Centre next
door. Under the wetlands plan
the water will be collected from
the drain and be diverted into
the wetlands before eventually
working its way into the Styx
River.
Here’s looking at you Elton
A GROUP OF residents at
Arvida Park Lane were so
inspired by the Elton John
concert, they wanted to mark
the showbiz legend’s upcoming
birthday.
The residents had a new task to
complete during their usual craft
group – creating Elton Johninspired
glasses as a birthday
tribute for his big day on March
25, when he turns 76.
The idea came about after the
residents were able to hear his
January concert at Orangetheory
stadium perfectly from over their
village fence.
Resident Julie Whittington
says her bright pink and white
feathered glasses took just over
an hour to complete.
“We had a chat about what
it would be like to wear big
colourful glasses like Elton so
we decided to make our own,”
Julie said. “It was fun listening
to Elton’s greatest hits while we
were crafting too.”
The regular craft group
activities put into practice two
pillars of Arvida’s wellness
approach – engaging and
thinking well.
Arvida Park Lane Village
manager Leigh Tabak said her
residents were very engaged
and were surprised with how
many songs they knew from the
concert.
“Craft is popular with
our residents and we’d been
humming Elton tunes ever since
the concert so we thought we’d
pay tribute to a superstar on his
birthday.”
Regular race routine
wins Sykes seven titles
•From page 1
She describes herself as an
overthinker, but having a
regular race routine helps to
slow her mind down during high
pressure moments on the track.
“Inside my mind, I know what
to do. I know how to get out of
situations. I know how to get out
the gate.
“It’s just about using little
techniques. When I get to the
start gate I take a deep breath
to centre myself to where I am
and what I’m doing . . . I guess
you could say I engage the beast
within me,” she said.
The teenager has a few useful
methods off the track too. Sykes
believes a lot of her success
is due to her mum Marnie’s
chicken noodle soup, which she
first tasted when she started
racing.
“As I have grown up
and moved out, she makes it
when I’m not feeling 100 per
cent or to have when I get home
from racing late at night,” she
said.
After such a successful
Sykes hopes to be selected in
Cycling New Zealand’s high
performance squad in the
future.
ready,” she said.
“It’s a really cool thing for
me to get into, but if I doesn’t
happen soon it’s okay.”
Sykes will now turn her
focus to the Oceania track
championships in Brisbane
from March 24-28.
Plan to protect Styx
from sediment run-off
• From page 1
The city council says the
wetlands facility to capture the
stormwater run-off will be bigger
than required for the village, so
the council can take the opportunity
to remove contaminants
in stormwater, which flows from
existing developed areas, including
the retail centre.
City council acting head of
three waters Brent Smith said the
treatment area will cover a space
of about 2.5 hectares and include
a two-stage treatment process
and a storage retention basin.
Thursday March 16 2023
“We are delighted that Ryman
Healthcare is partnering with
us to build this new stormwater
treatment facility,’’ he said.
Environment Canterbury
spokeswoman Sophie Harland
said it has been important to
protect the Styx River from
any potential sediment-laden
water run-off associated with
this construction site during the
formation of the wetlands.
While the wetland comprises
around 2.5 hectares of land, the
Northwood village proper will be
built on around seven hectares.
Grant a game-changer for gardeners
ISLEWORTH School’s orchard
has been given a funding boost
from the Earthwise Action
Fund.
Teacher and enviro schools
lead Anita Carey said the $1000
grant was a game-changer,
enabling the purchase and
installation of a water tank –
which in turn has allowed the
school to harvest rainwater to
water their vegetable gardens
and orchard.
It has also enabled the
purchase of seeds to plant
beneath the fruit trees in the
orchard, to support the health of
the trees and attract bees, other
insects and birds to ensure good
pollination occurs.
“In all, this will feed more
students, giving them invaluable
opportunities to taste fruit
directly from the tree and try
fruits they otherwise wouldn’t
have, as well as being involved
in the whole growing process,”
Carey said. Earthwise group
managing director and owner
Jamie Peters said the company
was thrilled to play a part in
helping get the orchard up and
running. “When Isleworth
School shared their idea with us,
we really loved the fact that not
only does the orchard educate
tamariki on the benefits of
maintaining the health of trees,
but it also gets them involved
in the planting and growing of
trees,” he said.
The fund is in partnership
with the Toimata Foundation,
and their Enviroschools and Te
Aho Tu Roa networks.
Add delicious chia
to excess plums
Deanna Copland serves up
mouth-watering recipes for
abundant stone fruit
HAVE YOU got an over-supply of stone
fruit? We have had an excess of plums
this year, so I have felt a bit like Forrest
Gump’s friend Bubba did towards shrimp.
There are many varieties of plums and
they come in shades of red, yellow and
green, and can vary in size. They are a
good source of vitamins A and C, as well
as fibre.
Plums contain polyphenol antioxidants,
which have positive effects on bone health
and may help reduce the risk of heart
disease and diabetes.
Dried plums – prunes – have a wellknown
laxative effect if too many are
consumed.
One easy recipe, which was a hit with
my kids, was plum chia jam. Jam is soon
to be removed from the list of allowable
foods to feed children in daycare, so this
would be an ideal alternative for the chefs
and cooks working in these centres also.
Traditional jam requires a lot of sugar
unfortunately, so is not a healthy option
for children, diabetics or anybody for that
matter.
The fruit in this recipe can be substituted
for any stone fruit.
It is nice dolloped onto porridge on
cooler mornings, served with Greek or
coconut yoghurt as a snack, on a cheese
board alongside cheeses, or on top of
banana pancakes (recipe included).
Fruit chia jam can be made with stone
fruit such as plums, or in this case raspberries.
It is great on pancakes.
Banana pancakes
Ingredients
1 egg
1 ripe banana
½ tsp cinnamon
3 Tbsp rolled oats
1 tsp chia seeds
Directions
Mix ingredients together in a blender or
food processor.
Heat 1 Tbsp of butter or coconut oil in
a frypan and add small amounts of batter.
Cook for about two minutes on each side.
Plum chia jam
Ingredients
2 cups plums, roughly chopped, stones
discarded
2 Tbsp lemon juice
2 Tbsp maple syrup
2 Tbsp white chia seeds
Directions
Add plums, lemon juice and maple
syrup to a pot, over medium heat.
Bring to the boil and then turn down
the heat to allow plums to simmer and
reduce for approximately 10-15 minutes.
Add the chia seeds and allow to cook,
while stirring for a further minute before
removing from the heat.
Allow to cool at room temperature
before transferring to sterilised jars. It will
thicken further, once cooled.
Store in the fridge for up to two weeks.
Earlier this month Dr Steve operated on a very
special Yellow Eyed Penguin (hoiho). This penguin
has a name - Mr Sandymount. Mr Sandymount
was blind in his left eye because of a cataract that
was likely caused by trauma. He travelled up with
his team from the Wildlife Hospital in Dunedin.
There is a requirement that to be released back
into the wild, Yellow Eyed penguins have to
be able to see from both eyes. Without this
“binocular vision” they are less likely to be able to
hunt and feed themselves on
fast moving little fish.
Dr Steve had never removed
a cataract from a Penguin
before, so a bit of research
was required. The eye is much
smaller than a cat or dogs,
making the surgery more
difficult and the potential for
complications higher.
The pre-op considerations
are similar to companion
animals but the anaesthetic
is risker due to the fact we
are operating on a bird!
Fortunately the wildlife team
are very experienced in this sphere
and took care of Mr Sandymount and
all his anaesthesia requirements.
Although very intricate the surgery
went very well. Steve found the
cataract to be “softer” than dogs. The
surgical time was therefore short -
which is good.
In a series of penguin cataracts
surgeries overseas a number of eyes
got scarring on the back lens capsule.
Because of this a circular hole was
made in the posterior lens capsule at
the end off the phacoemulsification
cataract surgery. Steve was anxious
about this before the surgery as it is not
routinely done with dogs - but it went
smoothly.
Four weeks after surgery he is going great.
His eye looks very good. He is still getting
2 anti-inflammatory drops a day in his
left eye and an oral anti-inflammatory
medication. Apart from this he is
swimming in his pool all day.
Some FACTS on Yellow Eyed
Penguins
1. One of the rarest Penguins in the
world, found only in NZL
2. Maori name, HOIHO, meaning
noise and shouter, because of its
Shrill call
3. In 1990/91, their were 150 Pairs
left in the South Island. In 1996/97
their were 600 pairs due to the
reduction of predators by conservation groups. In 2018/19, there were only 225
pairs located.
4. They have become casualties of human activities - hunted for food, fires
destroyed their habitats, and people arrived with predators.
5. Hoiho are considered to be ocean sentinels, helping us understand the effects of
pollution, over fishing and climate change.
HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping Cantabrians
get the balance right when it comes to
choosing the perfect heat pump or air
conditioning system for their home or office
since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home both
in Winter and Summer. This can be achieved
by using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in designing,
installing and commissioning these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 80 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community Services
Card, a SuperGold combo card or who live in
a low-income area as determined by deciles
8-10 on the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s
time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have. This
consultation is at no cost to the customer
and is always provided before a heat pump is
installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
0800 44 00 14, or visit the RDP website at
