Dan’s dilemma as
wicket record looms
• By Jaime Cunningham
SUMNER CRICKET veteran
Dan Vann faces a dilemma this
weekend.
He is three wickets away from
reaching a milestone of 500 for
the club. But his team needs to
bat the majority of Saturday’s
match against Lancaster Park
to avoid relegation to division 1
next season.
That means he may not get
much chance to bowl in the
last game of the season, and
to complicate matters, the
39-year-old may not return
next season. He is thinking of
playing less cricket next season,
and filling in for the club’s top
side when needed.
The humble club man – who
is more than just a bowler –
says Saturday’s focus is on the
team’s result, not him. Vann is
also the team’s player-coach,
vice-captain, the club captain,
and in charge of the side’s gear.
“If we can win or draw this
week, we don’t get relegated,”
Vann said.
VETERAN’S COUNTDOWN TO MILESTONE
PREDICAMENT:
Dan Vann is
nearing his 500th
career wicket for
Sumner, but his
chances could
be limited in
the last game of
the season on
Saturday.
Chance
dolphins
still around
during
SailGP race
• By Tony Simons
A DOLPHIN expert said hectors
dolphins that delayed the Sail GP
racing were probably still on or
near the racecourse when racing
went ahead.
Sail GP organisers reported
racing on Whakaraupō Lyttelton
Harbour on Saturday was delayed
by 40 minutes after a dolphin was
sighted on the racecourse – but
there was more than one, a fact
New Zealand team driver Peter
Burling later acknowledged.
“We were fortunate they
decided to shift off and let us get
three races in,” he said.
Said dolphin expert
Prof Liz Slooten:
“How would
you know they had
moved off?”
The Sail GP race
management plan
stated if dolphins
were sighted near Liz Slooten
the racecourse
racing would be delayed or
stopped entirely until they left of
their own accord.
Slooten questioned whether the
dolphins had moved away or were
simply no longer able to be seen.
Piece of history lost with
theft of tennis club gate
• By Heidi Slade
All JilliAN Frater wants is
to see her 100-year-old tennis
club’s gate returned.
The Lyttelton Tennis Club
committee member discovered
the wrought iron gate had been
stolen two weeks ago, when she
visited the club.
“It’s a shame,’’ Frater said.
“It (the gate) has been there
for decades and now someone’s
taken it away.”
Hidden from the street, the
thief would have had to peer
through trees and over bushes
to even be able to see the gate,
she said.
Frater, who has lived in Lyttelton
for more than 30 years,
estimates the club itself – gate
and all – has been around since
about 1919. It was previously
known as Te Whaka Tennis
Club.
Local resident Jane McBride
said the thief had stolen something
from everyone.
“A very special feeling of
history is now lost to everyone
else because someone decided to
steal away this part of our past,’’
McBride said.
Frater reported the theft to the
city council on March 13. She
also reported it to the police.
City council community parks
manager Al Hardy said the gate
was the council’s responsibility.
“We are in the process of
getting it replaced,’’ Hardy said.
Frater has contacted companies
in Christchurch that might
have been sold the gate. She has
asked them to keep an eye out.
“Apparently they’re stolen all
the time,’’ she said.
PARIS - The Memoir
by Paris hilton
The roles Paris embraces as a fully realized woman. With courage, honesty, and
humour, Paris Hilton is ready to take stock, place it all in context and share her
story with the world. Separating the creation from the creator, the brand from the
ambassador, Paris: The Memoir strips away all we thought we knew about a celebrity
icon, taking us back to a privileged childhood lived through the lens of undiagnosed
ADHD, a teenage rebellion that triggered a panicked – and perilous – decision by her
parents. Led to believe they were saving their child’s life, Paris’s mother and father had
her kidnapped and saw her sent to a series of ‘emotional growth boarding schools’,
where she survived almost two years of verbal, physical and sexual abuse. In the
midst of a hell we now call the ‘troubled teen industry’, Paris created a beautiful inner
world where the ugliness couldn’t touch her. She came out, resolving to trust no-one
but herself as she transformed that fantasy world into a multibillion-dollar reality. Paris
shows us her path to peace while she challenges us to question our role in her story
and in our own.
The McCartney Legacy
Volume 1: 1969 - 73 by Allan Kozinn, Adrian Sinclair
Set against the backdrop of the Beatles splintering over both business and creative issues,
The McCartney Legacy: Volume 1: 1969-73 covers a period in which Paul McCartney
recreated himself, both as a man and as a musician. This is an in-depth and revealing
exploration of his creative life beyond the Beatles-featuring hundreds of interviews with
fellow musicians, tour managers, recording engineers, producers, filmmakers, and more.
Beside his extraordinary, creative solo output, he has collaborated with the most influential
artists of his generation and the next: from Elvis Costello to Stevie Wonder, from Michael
Jackson to Dave Grohl, even with Johnny Cash and Kanye West. McCartney, too, has
explored new poetry styles with Allen Ginsburg and teamed up with Peter Martins and
the NYC Ballet to create Ocean’s Kingdom. The list goes on from there. And he has done
all this post-Beatles and while maintaining a mostly normal family life. Paul McCartney
has lived ten lifetimes in the span of one and become increasingly more relevant, yet
curiously, his creative output since the Beatles has never had the full exploration such a
life and body of work demands.
Design a nod to hotel’s early days
• By Tony Simons
DEVELOPERS have revealed
what will replace the landmark
pink Ali Barber’s building in
Sumner.
Brooksfield Townhouses is
developing the site and the images
(right) reveal the new Marriner
St building will be typical of the
company’s design style, reflecting
heritage and character.
The existing building was
originally Geo Vincent’s Hotel,
which dated back to the late 1800s
and was a place where travellers
from Christchurch used to stay.
Vincents went on to became a
boarding house, Sunleigh Flats,
then a children’s home for a short
time, before being turned into
flats again.
Brooksfield
director Vincent
Holloway said the
company’s design
style generally
revolves around
classical heritage.
Vincent
Holloway
Brooksfield
employed English
architect Ben
Pentreath to
design the building. Pentreath
had designed the King Charles III
supported Poundbury, a heritage
precinct in Dorchester, England.
The Sumner apartments are all
under contract, Holloway said.
They were snapped up as soon
as the architect’s drawings were
released, about four weeks ago.
Vann aims to end season on a high note
• From page 1
“Ideally we’ll bat for most of
the day, but hopefully I can get
some overs in later in the day.”
He didn’t bowl any overs last
week, but said this was due
to the tidy efforts by Nawid
Mohammady (4/38), Ben Hall
(2/7) and Boston Fielding (2/17)
– not because he was injured.
Going into the last week of the
season, Sumner are 8/1 in their
second innings against Lancaster
Park, after they were bowled
out for 168. Lancaster Park only
managed 108 runs, and face a
season in division 1 if they are
unable to chase Sumner’s total.
If Vann can reach the 500
wicket milestone on Saturday he
will be finishing a memorable
season on a high note. He
brought up 400 appearances
for the club in October, and
has played for Sumner’s
championship and senior A sides
since making his debut in 2002.
He is also the club’s highestever
wicket taker.
Vann said playing, running
his cricket coaching business
and teaching physical education
part-time at Chisnallwood
Intermediate has become too
much to balance next season.
The life member first started
playing for Sumner as a 17-yearold
student at Linwood College
(now Te Aratai College), and 22
years later, is a prominent name
in club records.
As well as leading wicket taker,
Vann has also made the secondmost
appearances for Sumner
after Ray Steele’s 428.
He has taken five wickets and
scored a century on the same day
for Sumner, and has career-best
figures of 6/6.
“I started off quite low down
the batting order and not
bowling heaps when I first
started, and it wasn’t until I was
21 that I was making some runs
and getting wickets,” he said.
“It took a while.”
Sumner will continue the
second day of their last match
this season at St Albans Park
from 10.30am on Saturday.
TRACKERS: Karin Bos with her two detection dogs
Nightshade (left) and Terry.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
No more hedgehogs to
hound wildlife on spit
THE HEDGEHOG population
has been snuffed out in parts of
Kaitōrete spit using traps and
conservation dogs.
Pest Free Banks Peninsula
wanted to prove hedgehogs
could be removed from
Kaitōrete, near Birdlings Flat
along the southern edge of
Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere.
Hedgehogs are indiscriminate
predators which are responsible
for the decline of many native
species. They kill ground
dwelling and nesting birds,
eating their eggs and young
chicks.
A three-step detection
method – including an array
of leghold traps, trail cameras
and conservation dogs like
three-and-a-half-year-old
border terrier Nightshade
(nicknamed Mobab) – were used
to prove the area was free of
hedgehogs.
Mabob and Terry, a 20-monthold
welsh springer spaniel
trained to track down feral
cats, live with Pest Free Banks
Peninsula dog handler Karin
Bos.
“Nightshade showed no
sign of hedgehogs within the
containment zone of 45ha on
any of the passes through the
site. With nothing in the leghold
lines either or showing up on
TRAINED: Nightshade takes a break from tracking
hedgehogs in Kaitorete.
cameras, we are confident there
are no remaining hedgehogs in
this area,” Bos said.
The area is home to many
at risk species, including the
banded dotterel, oystercatchers,
katipō, as well as skinks and
two species of flightless moth.
But it is also populated with
pests like hedgehogs, mustelids,
possums and feral cats.
An intensive trap network,
with a mix of live capture traps
and kill traps, were used to
target the hedgehogs.
Said Pest Free Banks
Peninsula senior team lead Tim
Sjoberg: “Dogs’ sense of smell is
so sensitive that the possibility of
the highly trained dog missing a
hedgehog on multiple passes are
remote.”
Weasels, stoats, ferrets,
possums and feral cats were also
targeted. The traps were initially
placed on the western end of
Kaitōrete and are moved east as
each area is cleared. A network
of traps and an active fence
system stop more pests from
entering the area.
“We’re using a mixture of
traditional methods and new
technology at this site,” Sjoberg
said.
City council regional parks
biodiversity team leader Alison
Evans said hedgehogs are often
overlooked as pests.
“They have detrimental
impacts on native biodiversity
in Aotearoa. They are
indiscriminate predators and
are responsible for population
declines of many native
species including lizards and
invertebrates. They are also a
problem for ground dwelling
and nesting birds, like the
pohowera/banded dotterel,
by eating the eggs and young
chicks,” Evans said.
Bid to turn wastewater plant site into reserve
• By Heidi Slade
A BID IS BEING made to turn
the site of a major wastewater
project into a historic reserve.
Suky Thompson, of the
Robinsons Bay Ratepayers
Association, said the community
wants to turn the old sawmill
site on Sawmill Rd into a full
historic reserve owned by the
community.
The site is split across two
properties containing various
archaeological sites. The
city council bought the site
containing the mill, ponds and
a tramway as part of the Akaroa
Wastewater Project.
The land on which the original
mill owners’ cottage is located
was gifted to the community.
The association also wants to
acquire the land that may not be
used for the project.
The resource consent will
determine how much of the land
is needed.
Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula Community Board
chair Reuben Davidson said
there is a lot of interest from
the community about the site’s
future. Robinsons Bay resident
Kathleen Reid is also lobbying
for how the land can be used.
“The idea of a community
garden appeals to me,’’ said Reid.
“All of our food is trucked in,
we need to pick up some of the
ways of the past and be more
resilient.”
Garry Brittenden from Akaroa
Area School has also expressed
interest in a potential garden.
He said it could be a way for
students to be involved in the
community while learning
new skills. Reid presented to
the community board this
month and Thompson did so in
December.
Thompson presented a plan
to the community board for a
comprehensive historic reserve,
owned by the community.
She said it would have cultural
and recreational benefits for
Robinsons Bay.
Reid said a community garden
would have benefits for residents
and the wider area. She said
a food forest or perhaps an
orchard could work around the
associated archaeological site.
“There’s room for both, I
believe.”
Said Davidson: “My hope is
that the community board can
work with all residents to create
a space for the community and
visitors to enjoy.”
Native trees will be planted
on the city council land, said
acting head of three waters
Brent Smith. The new treatment
plant will remove nutrients
and pathogens from the water,
so there are no odour issues or
other impacts, he said.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST 13
Captain Champion’s true commitment
IT WAS a fine day in February
1961 and Captain Roy Champion
was enjoying a leisurely jaunt on
a speed boat with his daughter
around Whakaraupō Lyttelton
Harbour. The family fun was
rudely interrupted, however,
when the good captain and
harbourmaster spied another
speed boat clearly transgressing
the five-knot limit within 200
metres of the foreshore.
The alleged offender led the
captain on a merry chase before
attempting to make a getaway by
beaching his boat at Charteris
Bay. To the cheers of a small
crowd of onlookers, Captain
Champion handed the controls
to his daughter before diving
into the water and then chasing
down the owner with whom he
had a few words, presumably
concerning safe boating
practices.
Captain Alexander Royle
Champion was born on October
21, 1902. A third-generation
mariner, his grandfather,
Captain William Nile
Champion, was the master
of the missionary schooner
Undine and a well-known pilot
at Onehunga, while his father,
Captain William Champion,
commanded several vessels
including the barque Otago.
Young Roy Champion
began his maritime career in
Wellington at the tender age of
14 when he joined the barque
Rona, which traded between
New Zealand, Australia, and
the Pacific Coast of North
America.
In 1920, at the age of 18, he set
sail from Lyttelton in the barque
Rewa for Cape Horn and Great
Britain. He obtained his master’s
certificate to sail at just 23, at
that time the youngest New
Zealander to do so.
In 1929, master seaman
Champion gave up the carefree
seafaring ways of his youth
to marry Edna Mae Monks,
and served with the Southland
Harbour Board at Bluff before
joining the Lyttelton Harbour
Board as a pilot in 1937.
The start of World War 2
hostilities saw him aboard the
John Anderson as examination
officer, inspecting all ships
entering the harbour.
On October 12, as Captain
Champion was returning to port
after ordering the signals closing
the harbour to all traffic, the
fishing vessel Dolphin entered
past the heads and failed to stop.
A warning shot was fired from
the Battery Point gunnery but
tragically went astray, hitting
the Dolphin’s engine room
and killing its Captain, James
Brassell.
Already alerted to the apparent
intruder, Captain Champion
on the John Anderson had
cleared the moles just in time
to observe the Dolphin heeling
over, and managed to rescue the
ship’s second crewman William
Willman before she sank.
Later on during the war,
Captain Champion returned to
sea when he was released by the
Harbour Board to command
the mighty sailing ship Pamir,
making several voyages across
the Pacific carrying precious
cargo in hostile waters.
Post WW2, Captain
Champion returned to Lyttelton
as harbour pilot. He was
appointed Lyttelton Harbour
Master from 1950-1967 and
was involved in the move to the
Harbour Board’s Hollis and
Leonard designed seven-storey
headquarters, later known as
Shadbolt House.
He went on to serve as a
board member and chairman
of the Lyttelton Harbour Board
from 1968 to 1981, and was
also a member of the Lyttelton
Borough Council for nine years,
serving as deputy mayor for
three of those years.
In 1977, he was elected
president of the Lyttelton
Historical Museum Society
and was instrumental in the
fundraising campaign to find
new premises, officially opening
the Lyttelton Museum at
Gladstone Quay in 1980.
Captain Champion lived with
Edna Mae for many years at 8
Reserve Tce in Lyttelton – locally
known as ‘the Champion house’
until it was demolished, along
with his Lyttelton Museum
on Gladstone Quay, after the
February 22, 2011 earthquake.
He passed on at the venerable
age of 83 in 1985. The captain
was known for his reputation as
a stern disciplinarian, a seaman
without peer, and someone who
did not suffer fools gladly. Yet he
was also known for his kindness
and compassion, always quick
to offer help when needed. It
has been said that regardless of
whether he was speaking with
a governor general, an admiral,
a watersider, or a fisherman,
or singing around the piano
at a party, he remained true
to himself as ‘a man without
pretensions’.
Many thanks to Helen
Greenfield and Andrea McHarg
for their excellent research.
We’re planning for our
growing city
Christchurch’s housing and business development rules are changing
Ōtautahi Christchurch’s population is growing. Over the next 30 years, it’s predicted we’ll need more than 40,000
new houses to ensure everyone has a place to live, and Christchurch City Council is planning for that now.
Our growth challenge
We need to provide for the growth of housing and
business in the best locations in Christchurch, to
help address issues like climate change and housing
shortage. This means more houses where there’s good
access to shops, services, work, school, public transport
networks and infrastructure.
Where there’s good reason, we also need to ensure
development remains restricted or limited to protect
and maintain areas of value.
These changes won’t happen overnight. Over time the
look and feel of the city will change, and we want to plan
for that and keep what people value.
A new direction in urban planning
The planning rules have changed for New Zealand’s main urban areas. We need to
follow the new national direction to allow greater housing and business development
within Christchurch’s existing urban footprint.
There are new national standards for multi-unit housing developments called the
Medium-Density Residential Standards (MDRS). These aim to make it easier for denser
housing developments to happen. Once they come into effect, up to three dwellings
of up to three storeys can be developed on a property in Christchurch without needing
to apply for a resource consent, as long as all other rules have been met.
Not all parts of Christchurch are suitable for the MDRS, so we’re proposing special
rules, called Qualifying Matters, apply to recognise heritage and cultural features, to
protect major utility, infrastructure, and people in areas vulnerable to natural hazards,
among other things.
What we’re proposing
We’re proposing important changes to the city’s planning rulebook, the District Plan, via two plan changes – the Housing and Business Choice
Plan Change (Plan Change 14), and the Heritage Plan Change (Plan Change 13). Both plan changes were formally notified on 17 March 2023.
Replacing some existing residential zones in
the city with two new ones – a Medium-Density
Residential Zone and a High-Density Residential
Zone. The Medium-Density zone is the baseline for
increasing housing in our city. The High-Density
zone would allow apartment buildings and multistorey
flats in the central city.
Increased height limits for residential and
commercial buildings in and around the
central city, suburban centres and along public
transport routes, as well as enabling residential
development in some industrial areas around the
central city and larger suburban centres.
Special rules (Qualifying Matters) to limit greater
development of housing and business under
the MDRS, in order to better reflect our city’s
environment and climate. One proposes changing
recession planes to increase sunlight access from
what would be possible under the MDRS. This
applies citywide and means the MDRS won’t come
into effect for Christchurch until 2024, when Plan
Change 14 is decided on.
Heritage that should be protected, with a number
of new buildings, items and interiors added to
the Schedule of Significant Historic Heritage.
Have your say on our growing city
You can make a submission on the Housing and Business Choice Plan Change (Plan Change 14) and Heritage Plan
Change (Plan Change 13) until 3 May 2023. Detailed information about the plan changes and everything you
need to make your submission is available at ccc.govt.nz/growingcity
