Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Eppleton 

for our game against Crystal Palace Women in the Barclays 

Women’s Championship. 

I would like to wish a warm welcome 

to all the Crystal Palace staff, players 

and any supporters who have made the 

trip today. 

We’re all looking forward to a home 

game after a long trip away last weekend 

but we’re excited to get back on the 

pitch to try and extend this unbeaten 

run that we’re on going into the 

international break. 

We’ve been really unlucky in some 

fixtures where we’ve been really 

competitive and come away with 

nothing. 

Particularly with the Sheffield 

performance, we turned a scrappy 

performance into a valuable point. 

We showed real character last week 

against Charlton coming back from 

2-1 down to get the point and we’ll be 

looking to take all three points today. 

They’re a decent team. They’ve got some 

really strong individuals. 

But again, we know everything about 

them, we’ve done our research and we’ll 

put a team out there on Sunday that we 

think can get three points. 

The preparations have been good this 

week and hopefully the girls can put on a 

good performance and get some points.

Herron spoke exclusively to safc.com 

to preview today’s game against Crystal 

Palace Women at Eppleton. 

The Lasses all but secured Championship 

status last weekend with a point against 

Charlton. The team are 12 points clear 

of Coventry United with four games to 

go, with one point needed to make it 

mathematically certain. 

However, the focus remains the same 

going into Sunday, with the Lasses 

fully concentrated on continuing their 

unbeaten run. 

“We’re all feeling really positive heading 

into the game,” Herron said. 

“We know we performed well on 

Sunday against Charlton but we were 

disappointed not to come away with 

three points. 

“I think it shows how far we’ve come over 

the season. 

“I think the longer we keep the unbeaten 

run up the better and hopefully we can 

change the draws to wins and collect 

more points.” 

Herron credited the away side’s 

strengths, and insisted the mindset for 

the match has to be similar to that of a 

“cup final” to reap the rewards. 

“They’re a good side. When we played 

them last time it wasn’t an easy game. 

We had two chances that we managed to 

put away. 

“We can’t go into the game with any 

other mindset than it’s like a cup final and 

we just need to win.” 

Finally, with three of the remaining four 

games on home soil, the Lasses defender 

highlighted the importance of the crowd 

in getting behind the team. 

“The more people we get there, the 

better to help spur us on a bit. 

“Hopefully when we get our chances we 

can convert them.”

Sunderland Women’s Under-23 side are 

still unbeaten in the league, winning 14 

and drawing two of their 16 games so far 

this season. 

In their maiden year in the seventh 

tier, the young Lasses are just four 

games away from potentially securing 

promotion, currently sitting top on 44 

points, two ahead of Consett Ladies. 

Last time out, the Under-23s emphatically 

beat Leam Rangers Ladies 5-1, with Amy 

Richardson and Jasmine Elliot-Wood 

scoring, and Milly Cairns scoring a 

stunning hat-trick. 

Second-placed Consett are also unbeaten 

in the league. The two sides face off in the 

penultimate game of the season at the 

Academy of Light. 

While the success of the league cannot 

be understated, another highlight of the 

season has been the inclusion of some of 

the young squad into the first-team. 

Ellie Jardine, Ebony Thompson, Rhiannon 

Mallaburn and Milly Cairns have all been 

on the bench for the Lasses this season, 

emphasising the strength of the evergrowing 

Lasses pathway. 

The team don’t return to league action 

until April 16 when they host Darlington 

Women at home, hoping to continue 

their near-flawless run and continue their 

push for promotion to the sixth tier.
