The George
YARMOUTH, ISLE OF WIGHT
The George Hotel is a 17th Century townhouse enjoying a spectacular location on the water’s edge in Yarmouth, between Henry
VIII’s fortress castle and the long wooden pier.
This magnificent building is
steeped in history and was once
home to the most noteworthy
of the Island’s Governors, Sir Robert
Holmes, who often entertained King
Charles II.
The George is owned by nightclub
entrepreneur Howard Spooner, who
curated well known venues such as
The Leopard Lounge, Crazy Larry’s,
Embargo, Public and The Clapham
Grand. He has supervised the
refurbishment of the hotel and created
a stunning Italian-inspired beachfront
garden, complete with ancient olive
trees. A driftwood clad beach bar is a
Solent hotspot, sometimes serving 600
covers a day.
The business has also acquired a nearby
Italian restaurant (previously La Cucina),
which has a huge vaulted ceiling and is
currently in the process of converting
this into the Penthouse Suite for The
George.
Hotel and restaurant trade has grown
significantly since it was acquired in
2019 and BCM have been glad to assist
the owners with their expansion ideas.
Planning permission was duly granted
in February 2022 for a new pontoon
and jetty for The George, which will
enable guests to arrive by boat. As well
as this, BCM have been involved with
the planning and building regulation
applications (both approved) for the
conversion of Foresters Hall (the old La
Cucina restaurant) into a sumptuous
new Penthouse Suite for the hotel.
