As part of a broad institutional 

marketing campaign, 

SUNY Institute of Technology 

at Utica/Rome is shortening its 

name – unofficially – and unveiling 

a new logo to go with 

the new short-form name. 

“We’re not changing our official 

name: it will remain State 

University of New York Institute 

of Technology at Utica/ 

Rome,” says John Swann, director 

of public relations. “What 

we’re doing is encouraging 

people to call us SUNYIT – 

SUNY-EYE-TEE – an easy-toremember 

short form of our 

long legal name, and we’re replacing 

a nearly 25-year-old 

logo with one that matches the 

new short-form name.” The 

short-form name reflects the 

SUNYIT Web site address, 

www.sunyit.edu, and a new 

toll-free telephone number, 

1 (866) 2-SUNYIT. 

Founded in 1966 as “Upper 

Division College at Herkimer- 

Utica-Rome,” SUNYIT’s name 

changed to “State University of 

New York College at Utica/ 

Rome” in 1974. In 1977, the 

name changed – again – to 

“State University College of 

Technology at Utica/Rome,” 

and in 1988 the current name 

was adopted. 

Students, alumni, and area 

residents have many nicknames 

for the campus: Upper 

Division, UDC, SUNY Tech, 

SUNY Utica/Rome. “We think 

it’s important that we let people 

know: ‘You may have known 

us by some other name in the 

past, but we’re committed to 

calling this institution 

SUNYIT,’” says Marybeth 

Lyons, director of admissions. 

While branding the institution 

is important in the recruitment 

of students, members of the 

SUNYIT Marketing Committee 

and others involved in the decision 

felt it was important that 

the short-form name reflect 

both membership in the State 

University of New York system 

and the special mission of the 

campus. 

“SUNY is the largest system 

of public higher education in 

the country,” says Daniel 

Schabert, director of libraries 

and instructional resources. 

“It’s a brand that is increasingly 

well-known in the U.S. and 

abroad. The term “I.T.” is important 

to us. In the 21st century, 

I.T. means “information 

technology” to many people, 

and among institutes of technology 

across the country I.T. 

is a commonly understood 

name abbreviation: MIT, RIT, 

IIT. So ‘SUNYIT’ was the logical 

choice.” 

The new logo is the work of 

Michael De Cicco, director of 

publications at SUNYIT. The 

SUNYIT logo will be used in on 

and off campus on recruitment 

publications, advertising, the 

Web (www.sunyit.edu), and on 

a wide variety of items that will 

help strengthen the SUNY Institute 

of Technology/SUNYIT 

name and identity.

Nursing Professor’s Book Chronicles 

North Country TB Treatment 

A faculty member in SUNY 

Institute of Technology’s School 

of Nursing has written a book 

about the innovative tuberculosis 

sanatorium that flourished 

in Saranac Lake, N.Y., for 70 

years. 

“Portrait of Healing: Curing 

in the Woods,” by Dr. Victoria 

E. Rinehart, associate professor, 

is published by North Country 

Books. It tells the story of Dr. 

Edward L. Trudeau, founder of 

the Trudeau Sanatorium in 

Saranac Lake, who pioneered a 

treatment for tuberculosis patients 

that became the model 

for TB care in the United States. 

His revolutionary approach 

provided patients with fresh air, 

good food and rest so that their 

bodies could heal themselves. 

“Portrait of Healing” recounts 

how Dr. Trudeau, a TB patient 

himself, came to build the first 

tuberculosis sanatorium in 

America deep in the 

Adirondack wilderness starting 

in 1884. The book’s many photographs 

– many never before 

published – and first-person 

accounts by former patients 

and nurses are a vivid depiction 

of sanatorium life. 

“Doonesbury” cartoonist 

Garry Trudeau, Dr. Trudeau’s 

great-grandson, calls “Portrait 

of Healing” “delightful… lovingly 

research and gracefully 

presented.” In the book’s foreword, 

he praises Rinehart for 

“…searching out the stories… 

of the patients and the 

caregivers who served them so 

well… Victoria Rinehart not 

only humanizes the sanitarium 

story, but also reminds us just 

how original, even radical, the 

fresh-air treatment was for its 

day.” 

“Portrait of Healing: Curing 

in the Woods” is available at 

Park Row Booksellers in 

Clinton and other area bookstores. 

Profits from the sale of 

the book will be donated to the 

Trudeau Institute Biomedical 

Research laboratory in Saranac 

Lake. 

Rinehart has been a member 

of the SUNYIT School of Nursing 

faculty for 15 years and is a 

recipient of the SUNY 

Chancellor’s Award for Excellence 

in Teaching. A native of 

Rome, N.Y., she currently resides 

in Utica and Lake Placid. 



Brij Mullick: “Known and loved by all” 

Faculty, staff, and students 

are paying tribute to the life and 

legacy of Dr. Brij Mullick, associate 

professor in psychology 

at SUNY Institute of Technology. 

A member of the faculty 

since 1979, Dr. Mullick died 

July 7 at age 69 after collapsing 

at the New Hartford Senior 

High School track where he 

and his wife Dr. Rosemary 

Mullick, also a member of the 

SUNYIT faculty, were training 

for the Boilermaker 8K walk. 

“He was a person who was 

known by a lot of people and 

loved by all,” Rosemary Mullick 

told the Utica Observer-Dispatch. 

“He was a tremendously 

giving individual.” 

A native of India, Dr. Mullick 

was a 1951 graduate of Panjab 

University, Chandiagarh, India, 

where he received a Bachelor of 

Arts degree with a double major 

in English Literature and 

History. He earned Ph.D. and 

M.A. degrees in psychology 

from Wayne State University in 

Detroit, and a M.S. in social 

work from the University of 

Delhi, India. 

Beginning his career as an instructor 

in psychology at 

Wayne State University in Detroit 

in 1973, Dr. Mullick 

joined the SUNYIT faculty in 

1979 as an assistant professor 

of human services. Since 1985, 

he was an associate professor in 

the department of psychology 

in the School of Arts & Sciences. 

For two years, from 

1997-1999, he served as department 

chair. He also served 

as visiting professor in psychology 

in 1990 and in 2001 at 

Panjab University, India. 

He taught more than a dozen 

different psychology courses, 

personally developing two of 

them (“Psychology of Aging, 

Dying, Death and Bereavement” 

and “Practicum in Psychology”), 

and developed a 

minor in gerontology. In 1998, 

this interdisciplinary offering 

was approved by SUNYIT’s 

Curriculum Committee and 

became an Academic Minor. 

Dr. Mullick was instrumental 

in 1984 in establishing a 

chapter of PSI CHI on the 

SUNYIT campus. PSI CHI, a 

psychology honorary association 

that acknowledges student 

excellence in psychology, has 

inducted more than 230 students 

as members. Dr. Mullick 

also brought to campus some 

of the field’s most distinguished 

names through a “PSI CHI Lecture 

Series.” 

While in India, during his 

1990 and 2001 sabbatical 

leaves, Dr. Mullick engaged in 

programmatic research aimed 

at understanding attitudes toward 

the elderly and the aging 

process, using Asian Indians as 

an ethnic subgroup for research 

subjects. The research examined 

multiculturalism and aging 

through a cross-cultural 

comparison of attitudes toward 

aging and the aged, and adjustment 

to the aging process and 

the retirement role. Dr. Mullick 

was a senior research associate 

of the Center for Health and 

Aging at SUNYIT.

Dr. Mullick attended annual 

meetings of and was active in 

the State Society on Aging of 

New York (SSA) and the 

Gerontological Society of 

America (GSA). For the past 

seven years, he served on the 

SSA’s executive board; he 

chaired the group’s education 

committee from 1994-1999. In 

October 1999, Dr. Mullick was 

elected president of SSA, and 

organized the SSA’s 29th annual 

state-wide conference in 2001. 

SSA encourages student participation 

in the professional organization; 

SUNYIT was recognized 

at the 2001 conference 

for the highest level of student 

participation in SSA of any college 

in the state. 

Dr. Mullick personally raised 

approximately $20,000 for 

support of student scholarships; 

by fall 2002, the resulting 

endowment will produce 

sufficient funds to support two 

annual scholarships for students 

in SUNYIT’s psychology 

program. 

This year Dr. Mullick received 

the Chancellor’s Award 

for Excellence in Teaching; the 

award was presented by Chancellor 

Robert L. King at 

SUNYIT’s May Commencement. 

Among the documents 

reviewed by the campus nominating 

committee was an unsolicited 

letter from a former 

student, who wrote: 

“Thank you for taking me 

under your wing, advising me, 

encouraging me, and expecting 

me to live up to your high 

expectations...Thank you for 

your kindness and your understanding. 

If God created angels, 

surely you are one.” 

Tribute to Dr. Peter J. Cayan 

The portrait of Dr. Cayan, painting by George McClancy, will 

hang in the Peter J. Cayan Library. 

Faculty, staff, friends and 

family paid tribute and said 

farewell to Dr. Peter J. Cayan at 

the Radisson Hotel-Utica Centre 

June 27. More than 400 

guests were on hand in the 

Radisson Ballroom as U.S. District 

Judge David Hurd presided 

over an evening of 

speeches, remembrances, 

laughter, and tears. 

Among those sharing stories 

of Dr. Cayan’s 39 years of service 

to the State University of 

New York were former SUNY 

Chancellor Clifton R. Wharton 

Jr., SUNY Vice Chancellor and 

Chief Operating Officer Richard 

P. Miller Jr., SUNY Institute

During his 20-minute daily 

commute from New Hartford 

to SUNY Institute of Technology, 

Dr. Thomas Tribunella 

usually listens to rock and roll. 

In March, he replaced tunes 

with a conversational Spanish 

tape. 

Tribunella, chair of SUNYIT’s 

accounting program and a 13year 

faculty member, isn’t striving 

for Spanish fluency. “I want 

to familiarize myself with the 

way they pronounce words. It’ll 

help me understand their accents 

better,” he says. 

“They” are his new students: 

25 juniors and seniors from the 

Dominican Republic who will 

attend La Universidad APEC 

(Action Pro Education and Culture) 

in Santo Domingo in September. 

Fifteen Taiwanese students 

will also attend classes 

there in this program. In January, 

2003, a similar program for 

30 Taiwanese students will begin 

in Taiwan. 

Tribunella, who teaches accounting 

management and 

management information systems 

at SUNYIT, will bring his 

expertise to the Dominican Republic. 

He’s one of eight SUNY 

faculty members teaching at 

APEC, a private, Santo 

Domingo-based, not-for-profit 

university. 

Founded in 1965 by business 

people and professionals, 

APEC offers undergraduate 


School of Management Launches 

by Ellen Portnoy Two Programs: D.R. & MBA 

A Caribbean Bachelor’s Degree 

courses in business and 

master’s programs in international 

business; tourism; 

French, European and privacy 

law; and electrical engineering. 

The school contains 137 classrooms 

on its main campus, 

plus extensive computer facilities, 

a photography lab and a 

television studio. Current 

APEC enrollment is 7,847. 

Each month, one SUNY faculty 

member – seven from 

SUNYIT, one from SUNY Delhi 

– will spend a week teaching 

on APEC’s campus. All classes 

are taught in English; students 

screened for English proficiency 

will attend successive 

classes for two full days and 

five, three-hour night sessions. 

Participating professors and 

their courses are Dr. Thomas 

Tribunella, associate professor 

of accounting, e-commerce; 

Peter Karl, attorney and associate 

professor of accounting, 

business law; Dr. Sarah 

Laditka, associate professor of 

management, management 

science; Dr. Sanjay Varshney, 

dean of the School of Management, 

investments; Dr. Allen 

Hall, associate professor of 

management, business and society; 

Robert Orilio, associate 

professor of finance, projects in 

business; Dr. Edward Petronio, 

associate professor of management, 

strategy capstone; and, 

William Raynor, SUNY Delhi, 

marketing management. 

After SUNYIT professors 

leave Santo Domingo, courses 

continue for three weeks of 

applications and study online. 

Enrolled students who have previously 

earned 92 credits from 

APEC earn four credits per 

course, or 32 credits. After completing 

the eight-course program, 

each student receives a 

bachelor’s degree in business 

administration from SUNYIT. 

According to Varshney, 

SUNYIT has been seeking an 

overseas collaboration for some 

time. Last year, Raynor told 

Varshney that APEC wanted to 

collaborate with a prestigious, 

transfer college. Interested, 

Varshney met with APEC’s president 

and vice president in the 

Dominican Republic. Varshney 

was impressed. “The university 

is nicely equipped. I was 

amazed how technologically 

advanced it was,” he says. From 

that meeting, a collaborative degree 

program emerged. 

In Tribunella’s e-commerce 

course, students will spend the 

week-long class time learning 

accounting, implementing a 

marketing plan, designing a 

Web site, managing a database, 

studying security issues and 

mastering intellectual property 

rights. Tribunella also presents 

case studies: success stories like 

eBay and Dell, and failures like 

Enron. He introduces students 

to business ethics, citing Enron 

as a company that “jumped into 

e-commerce with too much 

zeal and not enough strategic 

planning. They had no experience 

and a lack of morality. 

People have to honor contracts.” 

It’s not the first time 

Tribunella has taught e-commerce. 

In 2000 and 2001, he 

traveled throughout the state, 

training small business counselors 

in seminars for the Small

Business Development Center, 

a division of the Small Business 

Administration. He also taught 

e-commerce, without an online 

component, to the Oneida 

County Bar Association in 

2000. He expects to do some 

major revisions to adapt this 

new hybrid course. 

For the three-week online 

course segment, students participate 

in class discussions, 

submit homework and complete 

group projects begun in 

class. Tribunella believes class 

discussions work better online, 

requiring students to think 

about their responses instead of 

blurting them out in class. Still, 

he acknowledges that online 

classes require students to be 

self-motivated. 

Tribunella is excited about 

the new international teaching 

opportunity. “What a neat experience 

to go to a different 

country, a different culture, to 

bring the message of e-commerce. 

We can teach a developing 

nation about free markets 

and Western culture. It 

strengthens their relations with 

the United States.” 

When the first class completes 

its courses, SUNYIT will 

use surveys and feedback from 

SUNY professors and APEC 

administrators to assess the 

new program. If it runs 

smoothly, Varshney says, 

SUNYIT will explore other international 

partnerships. “It’s a 

great opportunity for us.” 

MBA Underway at SUNYIT 


has received approval from 

the New York State Department 

of Education to offer a Master 

of Business Administration degree 

program, the first MBA 

program in the Mohawk Valley. 

Dr. Sanjay Varshney, dean of the 

School of Management, said 

courses will be offered starting 

in the fall 2002 semester. The 

program will be available oncampus 

and completely online; 

it will be the only on-line 

MBA program in the State University 

of New York system. 

“The future success of the 

Mohawk Valley Region is 

clearly wedded to the integration 

of high technology across 

a broad spectrum of our business 

community,” Dr. Varshney 

said. “One of the ways that 


can best partner with the business 

community is through 

educational offerings that support 

the development of a high 

technology environment. The 

MBA degree program will allow 

us to do that.” 

Unlike MBA programs offered 

in Syracuse and Albany, 

SUNYIT’s Master of Business 

Administration in Technology 

Management will combine a rigorous 

study of management topics 

with a unique focus on technology 

and innovation management, 

responding to the needs 

of the regional business community 

and complementing 

SUNYIT’s overall mission. 

The Master of Business Administration 

(MBA) degree is 

the most widely awarded and 

recognized graduate degree in 

the field of business. The presence 

of an MBA program at a 

university shows a strong commitment 

to excellence within 

the business curriculum that affects 

not only the academic 

community, but also the economic 

development of the area.

SUNYIT’s School of Management 

has offered business programs 

at the undergraduate 

level for more than 25 years and 

a graduate program in business 

management for nearly 16 

years. Current offerings include 

undergraduate and graduate 

degrees in accounting, finance, 

health services administration, 

and management. Many courses 

and select degree programs are 

available online. Eighty-five 

percent of the more than two 

dozen School of Management 

faculty hold doctoral degrees 

and many have extensive professional 

experience in their 

field. Approximately 650 undergraduate 

and 200 graduate 

students are currently enrolled 

in SUNYIT School of Management 

programs.

on May 11 and became 

SUNYIT’s newest alumni. I feel 

enormously privileged to have 

shared in the SUNYIT community

faculty and staff when I say 

we are proud to claim you as 

representatives of SUNYIT as 

you settle in various parts of the

long-standing tradition for every

Historically, the Senior Class

a new campus directory for 

SUNYIT’s Horatio Street entrance.

Timothy Dennison ’87, is a 

former Alumni Board member 

and is pleased to have the opportunity

Senior Systems Engineer at 

Enterasys Networks, Inc. in 

Herndon, VA. Tim has recently 

received the Vice Presidents 

award for team accomplishment 

in the successful operations 

of the Marine Corp Marathon 

and the Directors award 

for personal effort in the Marine 

Corp Marathon. 

Donna Sawyer White ’97, 

looks forward to “giving back” 

to SUNYIT. She is currently the 

vices at Mohawk Valley Community 

College. In addition to 

her coordinator position, 

Donna is an instructor and professional

Familiar Face 

in a New Place 

When SUNYIT went looking 

for its new Alumni and Parent 

Relations Officer it didn’t have 

to look far. Jeff Schneider, the 

new Alumni and Parent Relations 

Officer, has worked on 

campus the last two years as a 

Hall Director and most recently 

as the Coordinator of Academic 

Success. He looks to bring his 

experience in alumni affairs, 

student affairs and athletics 

together in his new position. 

A graduate of Onondaga 

Community College and 

Nazareth College, Schneider 

received a bachelor’s degree in 

Music Therapy. He is currently 

working on completing a degree 

in Student Affairs Administration 

at Syracuse University. 

As part of his master’s course 

work he did an internship in 

the Institutional Advancement 

Office at Utica College. While 

there, he did extensive work in 

the Alumni area, helping plan 

and carry out U.C.’s Alumni/ 

Parent weekend as well as other 

activities throughout the summer. 

“I look forward to working 

with the alumni of SUNYIT to 

develop new programs and 

strengthen current programs,” 

Schneider says. “It’s an exciting 

time to be working at SUNYIT 

with the new President and 

freshmen arriving next year.”

Schneider will continue to

May 11. SUNYIT’s 28th annual 

May Commencement was held 

at the Stanley Performing Arts 

Center in Utica. SUNY Chancellor 

Robert L. King addressed the 

class of 2002 and a capacity 

crowd of parents, family and 

friends. 

This year’s class includes 458 

graduating seniors: 61 from the 

School of Arts and Sciences, 144 

from the School of Management, 

208 from the School of Information 

Systems and Engineering 

Technology, and 44 from the 

School of Nursing. 

About half of this year’s graduates 

are from Oneida, Madison, 

Herkimer and Otsego counties. 

Other members of the class of 

2002 come from all over New 

York State; other states including 

New Jersey, Vermont, Maine, 

North Dakota, Georgia, and 

California; and, several foreign 

countries including China, Taiwan, 

South Korea, Kuwait, 

Japan, and Morocco. 

Chancellor King congratulates Dr. Thomas B. Matthews, 

recipient of the 2002 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in
