May Commencement:
A Celebration of Achievement
SUNY Institute of Technology
awarded more than 450 undergraduate
and graduate degrees
at Commencement, Saturday,
May 11. SUNYIT’s 28th annual
May Commencement was held
at the Stanley Performing Arts
Center in Utica. SUNY Chancellor
Robert L. King addressed the
class of 2002 and a capacity
crowd of parents, family and
friends.
This year’s class includes 458
graduating seniors: 61 from the
School of Arts and Sciences, 144
from the School of Management,
208 from the School of Information
Systems and Engineering
Technology, and 44 from the
School of Nursing.
About half of this year’s graduates
are from Oneida, Madison,
Herkimer and Otsego counties.
Other members of the class of
2002 come from all over New
York State; other states including
New Jersey, Vermont, Maine,
North Dakota, Georgia, and
California; and, several foreign
countries including China, Taiwan,
South Korea, Kuwait,
Japan, and Morocco.
Chancellor King congratulates Dr. Thomas B. Matthews,
recipient of the 2002 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in
Professional Service.
Dr. Peter J. Cayan offers congratulations to Dr. Brij Mullick,
recipient of the 2002 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in
Teaching.
In addition to the degrees
conferred upon the class of
2002, the college bestowed an
honorary Doctor of Science degree
on Peter M. DiPierro, vice
president for Nortel Networks,
and presented the Distinguished
Service Award to Louis
B. Tehan, Jr., executive director
of United Cerebral Palsy of
the Utica Area, Inc. Also, two
SUNYIT employees received
Chancellor’s Awards: Dr. Brij
Mullick, for excellence in teaching,
and Dr. Thomas B.
Matthews, director of career
services and freshman experience,
for excellence in professional
service.
SUNYIT President Dr.
Peter J. Cayan presided over
Commencement for the last
time; he retired at the end of
June after 20 years as president
of SUNYIT and a total
of 39 years of State University
service.
