May Commencement:<br />

A Celebration <strong>of</strong> Achievement<br />

<strong>SUNY</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><br />

awarded more than 450 undergraduate<br />

and graduate degrees<br />

at Commencement, Saturday,<br />

May 11. <strong>SUNY</strong>IT’s 28th annual<br />

May Commencement was held<br />

at the Stanley Performing Arts<br />

Center in Utica. <strong>SUNY</strong> Chancellor<br />

Robert L. King addressed the<br />

class <strong>of</strong> <strong>2002</strong> and a capacity<br />

crowd <strong>of</strong> parents, family and<br />

friends.<br />

This year’s class includes 458<br />

graduating seniors: 61 from the<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences, 144<br />

from the School <strong>of</strong> Management,<br />

208 from the School <strong>of</strong> Information<br />

Systems and Engineering<br />

<strong>Technology</strong>, and 44 from the<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Nursing.<br />

About half <strong>of</strong> this year’s graduates<br />

are from Oneida, Madison,<br />

Herkimer and Otsego counties.<br />

Other members <strong>of</strong> the class <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>2002</strong> come from all over New<br />

York State; other states including<br />

New Jersey, Vermont, Maine,<br />

North Dakota, Georgia, and<br />

California; and, several foreign<br />

countries including China, Taiwan,<br />

South Korea, Kuwait,<br />

Japan, and Morocco.<br />

Chancellor King congratulates Dr. Thomas B. Matthews,<br />

recipient <strong>of</strong> the <strong>2002</strong> Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Service.<br />

Dr. Peter J. Cayan <strong>of</strong>fers congratulations to Dr. Brij Mullick,<br />

recipient <strong>of</strong> the <strong>2002</strong> Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in<br />

Teaching.<br />

In addition to the degrees<br />

conferred upon the class <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>2002</strong>, the college bestowed an<br />

honorary Doctor <strong>of</strong> Science degree<br />

on Peter M. DiPierro, vice<br />

president for Nortel Networks,<br />

and presented the Distinguished<br />

Service Award to Louis<br />

B. Tehan, Jr., executive director<br />

<strong>of</strong> United Cerebral Palsy <strong>of</strong><br />

the Utica Area, Inc. Also, two<br />

<strong>SUNY</strong>IT employees received<br />

Chancellor’s Awards: Dr. Brij<br />

Mullick, for excellence in teaching,<br />

and Dr. Thomas B.<br />

Matthews, director <strong>of</strong> career<br />

services and freshman experience,<br />

for excellence in pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

service.<br />

<strong>SUNY</strong>IT President Dr.<br />

Peter J. Cayan presided over<br />

Commencement for the last<br />

time; he retired at the end <strong>of</strong><br />

June after 20 years as president<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>SUNY</strong>IT and a total<br />

<strong>of</strong> 39 years <strong>of</strong> State University<br />

service.<br />
