One of my old mates in football, and from
days gone by, Scouse Mark (who was and
is a Toffee) had sagely told me in the week
leading up to the game that coming back
after if you had lost was the longest journey
ever. You know, he was wrong, it was
much worse.
In fact, as I said earlier, no matter
what the outcome of the game (which is
possibly a blessing) our generation has
seen more than its fair share of showpiece
games and big days out. Whether it
be at Wembley, Cardiff, Old Trafford or
wherever, and I suppose that also changes
the expectation level of fans for what or
where they think that we should be as a
club. I mean, it’s easy to forget that we
were also part of the biggest breakaway
in football history when we effectively
resigned from the Football League to form
what has become the most powerful and
lucrative in the world, and that is, of course,
the Premier League. David Capper, who
was the company secretary back then,
often told the tale of what a momentous
moment that was, and even now I doubt
if all those involved had any inkling as to
where it would all be 30 years later – how
could they?
It kind of summed us up back then in
so much as, within a year of creating yet
more Blades history, we were back in the
Football League and once again with a
three-sided ground. You really couldn’t
have made it up. Certain things bring it
home to you how much that bigger stage
really means in the grander scheme
