Woodward had already scored four
league goals prior to Old Trafford and
both he and Currie were seen as possible
future England players.
The game itself, played on a warm
sunny day, was a tight, tense affair with
the Blades matching their illustrious
opponents. A key moment for United
was when left full-back Ted Hemsley had
to hobble off inside the last 10 minutes.
In the days of only one substitute,
forward Gil Reece took his place. In
the 85th minute Best opened up the
United defence on the left hand side
with a pacey run gliding past defenders
and ending with a precise shot across
goalkeeper John Hope into the far
corner of the net. A wonderful goal from
a tremendous player which has been
replayed for years by the BBC.
As the Blades pushed forward for
an equaliser, Alan Gowling scored a
second for the home team two minutes
after Best’s goal to clinch a 2-0 win for
Manchester United. However, the Blades
had impressed experts and their fans
alike with their performance.
In the event neither side could maintain
their sizzling early season form with the
Blades finishing 10th and Manchester
United eighth.
