MANAGER’S NOTES
A quick turnaround and welcome
back to Bramall Lane for another
vitally important game.
May I kick-off these notes by offering my
condolences to the Blades family following
the loss of Eddie Colquhoun over the
weekend.
I’m aware that Eddie was a fantastic
player for this club back in the 1970s and
his name is still sung around the ground at
most, if not all games, which is a measure
of the high regard he is held in. There’s
a few interesting lines in that song and
as much as one in particular could be
pertinent, we’ve just got to keep our
heads down on the pitch and keep ticking
off the matches.
There were many talking points from the
weekend’s game, lots of good displays
and moments for everyone to enjoy.
For me, though, what stood out for me
is the character to hit back from a setback
once more. We’ve come from behind
again – we did so against Sunderland
and Blackburn recently – and that proves
our resilience in what is a tough division.
We know what we are capable of, and it
fits with a lot of what we talk about, we
don’t panic and trust ourselves to make
chances, despite being on the back foot.
Specifically on Saturday, we passed the
ball well in the first half but too much in
front of their defensive system, our best
moments came when we played balls
on the diagonal or tried to get around
the back.
We managed to get ourselves in front
early in the second half, deservedly so,
but Cardiff had a spell of play where they
a had bit of the ball in our box, which
we weren’t happy with, so we made the
changes to make us stronger without
damaging us offensively.
You have to appreciate that any
team towards the bottom of the table
are fighting for survival and become
dangerous, so when we went in front
you knew what was coming. They’ve got
some big players, so we made changes to
stop them targeting us in the air and we
defended well, as well as putting the game
beyond them at the other end.
You won’t be surprised to hear that our
focus for tonight’s game began straight
after the final whistle, preparing the boys
for another major challenge. We did a bit
of work after the game and were back at
Shirecliffe yesterday to get ready.
This will be another game where we
need to be aligned, it was battle at Ashton
Gate earlier in the season and they will
arrive here as a wounded animal after
their weekend result.
Finally, just another important message
to our fantastic fans. Like Saturday, be
noisy and back the lads as much as
possible, we’ve got something to achieve
together.
Enjoy the game, and we’ll see you at
Wembley at the weekend.
WILL LOOKING TO TAKE ANY OPPORTUNITIES
Will Osula says
he’s ready to take
any opportunities
which may fall his way
after earning his first
outing for the Blades this
season recently in the
game against Burnley.
After being restored to
United’s matchday squad
in recent weeks, Will was
pressed back into service
in the top-of-the-table
clash with the Clarets,
coming on for the final
17 minutes as United
battled against the odds
with 10 men following a
first half red card for Wes
Foderingham.
Whilst the
circumstances of the game
were far from ideal, Will
still saw the appearance
as an opportunity and
he’s keen to impress
should more chances arise
between now and the end
of the season.
He told SUTV: “It was
nice to be back in red and
white amongst the
Blades again, it’s
always a great
feeling to put
the shirt back
on so it was a
good run out.
“Every time
you come onto
the pitch; it is an
PLAYER FOCUS
opportunity. When I get
my chance, I need to do
the best I can do, show
energy and hopefully
provide something for
the team.”
Will spent the first half
of the current season out
on loan at League One
Derby County, and he
says playing in front of
big crowds at Pride Park
and being in and around
an experienced dressing
room has helped him
develop his game.
He added: “It was a
good loan, and I was
happy with it. It was a
good experience both
on and off the field, and
we had similar playing
styles so that has been a
help too.
“Getting used to a big
atmosphere has been a
real help. I felt
⊳ Will Osula wants
to make the most of
any chances which
come his way
comfortable playing there
and that has meant I’ve
been comfortable coming
back here.
“I would say I have
improved a lot off the field,
especially with gaining
experience of being in
a first team changing
room. I have picked up a
lot of things from some
experienced professionals
and learnt a lot about the
game. It’s been a huge
help.”
JAYDEN ENJOYING THE FRIENDLY BATTLE
It’s been a friendly
battle which has
often seen one
play over the other, but
Jayden Bogle has relished
playing alongside George
Baldock in recent outings.
With Baldock deputising
on the left in the absence
of Max Lowe in recent
weeks, Jayden returned to
the starting line-up as Paul
Heckingbottom reshuffled
his pack.
Baldock moved into the
back three in the absence
of Anel Ahmedhodžić and
Chris Basham, allowing
Jayden to dovetail with his
fellow right wing-back as
United beat Cardiff 4-1.
Jayden has often hailed
the battle between the
pair as crucial in taking
their game forward, stating
it’s a friendly rivalry which
has brought great results
for the club over recent
seasons.
He said: “It’s been a
great battle but also nice
to play alongside each
other at times. I think
that’s what you need in
the team, you need two
players who support each
other when the other
one is playing. I think
the competition we have
throughout the team
has been brilliant. There
PLAYER FOCUS
have been times when
we’ve been running low
on players so that comes
down to the squad that we
have, if someone is injured
then another player
comes in.
“It just shows the
strength we have as a
team. George is a great
guy, we’re off for a coffee
after I’ve done this! It’s
been great since I’ve
arrived at the club, he’s
been supportive – but
everyone here is a great
guy. From when I’ve been
here, I could feel the
connection, it is a tight
squad. That’s what brings
good performances on
the pitch.”
▲ Jayden Bogle has enjoyed his battle with George Baldock
Now enjoying a strong
run in the side after
injury issues earlier in
the season, Jayden says
there’s still more to come
from him between now and
the end of the season.
He added: “I still think
there a bit to come until
I’m at my best. The injury
knocked me back a little,
but since I’ve got back,
I’ve hit good levels, but
I want to get better. I’d
like to improve my final
ball, and defensively I feel
I need to keep improving,
I don’t think I can ever be
too comfortable with that
because the better teams
you play, you need to be at
the top of your game.”
TOMMY HAILS ‘UNBELIEVABLE’ ROBBO DISPLAY
Tommy Doyle was full of praise
for colleague Jack Robinson who
netted the crucial second goal
from the Manchester City loanee’s cross
in the recent win against Cardiff City.
With the game delicately poised,
Tommy’s wonderful centre was gleefully
headed home by Robinson for a third
of the season, and rather than take the
credit for a sublime assist, the modest
midfield ace hailed his colleague for a
wonderful all-round display.
He told UTB: “Robbo deserves all the
credit really because he was unbelievable
for us today. He has been for a long time.
He is so important for us at the back
with the way he carries himself and the
way he marshals us about, ultimately his
performances have
been helping
us as well. I’m
buzzing that he
got the goal.
“Overall, it
was a good
performance.
We went 1-0
down which
is obviously
not what we
wanted but we
fought
PLAYER FOCUS
back, and Macca’s (James McAtee) goal
was very important for us and then after
that we dominated and deserved the
result in the end.
“Cardiff stuck it on us at times and we
had to deal with it. Thankfully we did, but
there is always going to be moments like
that in the Championship when you are
a little bit on the back foot, and it is how
you deal with it. I thought that we dealt
with it really well.”
Tommy’s performance again underlined
his importance to the Blades, with the ex-
Cardiff loan ace stating the current run of
consistent performances is the best he’s
produced in his fledgling career.
He continued: “I’d say so, obviously I’m
still young and I want to improve, but it’s
going well, so I’ve just got to keep going
and keep focused. We’ve got a goal to
get to and that’s all that’s in my head at
the minute.”
With the next three Championship
games all at home, Tommy also
reiterated the importance of the
Bramall Lane crowd.
He concluded: “The crowd are so
important; they have been great all
season. The next couple of games could
be crucial for us, so we need the fans in
loud voice because it really does help us
on the pitch. We’re obviously grateful and
want to give it back to them by getting
promoted.”
⊳ Tommy produced a fine assist for
Jack Robinson’s goal against Cardiff
SITTING DOWN WITH
BILLY
Billy
SHARP
Sharp
Billy Sharp scores
goals…well 120 days on
since his last league
goal, the skipper still has his
250th career league strike on
his mind, remaining optimistic it
will come soon and hopefully in
front of his beloved Kop at S2.
The 37-year-old came oh
so close to making that dream
become a reality against Wigan
Athletic recently and hopes
tonight is the night when he
reaches that magical number,
if selected, acknowledging
he has been pleased with his
contribution to the promotion
chasing cause this season,
amassing 39 appearances in all
competitions.
Not for the first time this
season, the Blades bounced
back from a defeat with a
resounding success and having
put Cardiff City to the sword
despite going behind at the
weekend, Billy says another
home maximum this evening
will mean everyone of a United
persuasion can then head to
Wembley on Saturday and
‘enjoy’ the FA Cup semi-final
clash against Premier League
champions and Champions
League contenders Manchester
City. However, the veteran
marksman is warning nothing
can or will be taken for granted
against Nigel Pearson’s Robins
who have shown this season
they are more than capable of
taking points off the division’s
front runners.
Throughout this exclusive
interview, Billy refused to shy
away from talking honestly
and openly about achieving
automatic promotion, believing
like the players, the fans
deserve and will relish another
crack at the big time, having
seen the previous two-season
stint severely affected by the
Covid-19 pandemic.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BRISTOL CITY
12 UTB
UTB: How important was it
to keep perspective despite
the setback of losing at Turf
Moor last week?
BS: “We wanted to go to
Burnley to win the game and
make some ground up on them
to challenge for the title, but
fair play to Burnley. When we
went down to 10-men they kept
possession, remained patient
and didn’t really give us a sniff.
They got the breakthrough
after half-time, added a second
soon after and managed the
“WE SHOWED CHARACTER
AND RESILIENCE AGAIN
AT THE WEEKEND AND
WE REMAIN IN A GREAT
POSITION; WE KNOW
THAT PEOPLE OUTSIDE
THE CLUB KNOW IT TOO
AND THOSE BEHIND ARE
FIGHTING LIKE MAD TO TRY
AND CHASE US DOWN”
game really well to get the three
points. Burnley wanted to get
one over on us after the 5-2 here
earlier in the season, but we
shot ourselves in the foot with a
mix-up between two players, but
that happens in football at every
level, it was a miscommunication
and it proved costly on the night.
Usually, we managed to dig
each other out of trouble, but we
couldn’t do it against the team
that have dominated the division.
It was an obvious blow and
disappointment to us, but we’ve
got three out of the last five at
home, so we know what we need
to do at Bramall Lane and we’ve
done it pretty well on the whole
this season so far. We believe if
we put in the performances, we
will get the results we deserve
and I’m confident of us picking
up the points we need to win
automatic promotion.”
UTB: Without wanting to tempt
fate in anyway, this is a group
of players, led by the manager
and his coaching staff who have
consistently bounced back from
any adversity encountered this
season. Is it simply the cliché of
focusing on the next game that
allows this to happen?
BS: “The first thing the lads
said to each other when the
manager had finished his de-brief
in the dressing room at Burnley
was ‘get your heads up and we
go against Cardiff on Saturday’.
We know the importance of
going to Wembley on the back of
two big results at home and that
has been the sole focus since
losing on Easter Monday. We
showed character and resilience
again at the weekend and we
remain in a great position; we
know that people outside the
club know it too and those
behind are fighting like mad to
try and chase us down. I’d rather
be in our position than everyone
else’s except Burnley, because
it is up to us to finish the job we
started last summer and if we
don’t get ourselves over the
line it will be our fault. It is in our
hands with five games to go
and we’re more than confident
of doing our talking on the pitch
over the next few weeks.”
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BRISTOL CITY
14 UTB
UTB: Should we get the job
done this season, is there a
genuine feeling of unfinished
business in the Premier
League and a real excitement
about what the future could
hold especially having seen
our last stint amongst the
elite cruelly hampered by the
effects of Covid?
BS: “Obviously I’ve got great
memories of the first season in
the Premier League, finishing
ninth after so long out of the
top-flight was some achievement,
but Covid literally ruined that
campaign, just as it did when
we were relegated the following
term. I remember winning at Old
Trafford against all the odds but
with no fans, it takes the edge of
it. It would be great to be back
up there mixing it with the big
boys for some of the lads that
haven’t experienced it before
and for some of us here it would
“I WANT TO CAPTAIN
SHEFFIELD UNITED TO
A THIRD PROMOTION
IN SEVEN SEASONS AS
SKIPPER FIRST AND
FOREMOST, THAT WOULD
BE SOMETHING SPECIAL”
be at least the third time we’ve
had the wonderful feeling of
winning promotion with United,
so it would be great to get over
the line and have that challenge
of playing in the best league in
the world again because it is
what we all want to do. Looking
back to when football was
suspended for the first time and
lockdown followed in March
2020, we were set to go
to Newcastle which
would have been some
day out for the fans
at St James Park
and a great place
to play football
with a terrific
atmosphere, but it
was all taken away
from us. Having no
fans, we’ve spoken
about it and highlighted
it before, hurt us more
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BRISTOL CITY
UTB 15
BS: “I want to captain Sheffield
United to a third promotion
in seven seasons as skipper
first and foremost, that would
be something special for me
personally and obviously
an absolutely phenomenal
achievement for everyone that
has been involved over the
years. There’s still a lot of work
to do to achieve that, but we’ve
given ourselves every chance. To
still be part of this special group
which is my club is fantastic, so
hopefully we can keep digging
away and getting the results
we need to win promotion.
Anything beyond that is out of my
control so I’m honestly not even
thinking about it.”
than most, because we regularly
thrived off being the underdog
and we always believed anything
was possible even if we went
behind. The fans were excellent
too, they missed out on so much
and it must have so disappointing
for them to see us playing in
front of empty stadiums for
what seemed like forever. We’d
worked so hard to get that, like
we are doing now, so hopefully
nothing like that spoils it if it
happens again.”
UTB: What would it mean to
you personally to win promotion
this season and I’m guessing
the ideal scenario would be to
lead the Blades out back in the
Premier League?
UTB: Is the FA Cup semi-final
against Manchester City at
Wembley on Saturday going
to be a welcome distraction
from the race for promotion
in the league?
BS: “I believe so, Tuesday night
is the priority though against a
good Bristol City team. We’ve
consistently said the same all
season, but the trip to Wembley
is sandwiched in before the
run-in and we’ll be excited when
the time is right despite being
massive underdogs. We’ll have
35,000 Unitedites down there
with us and it is a game where
we have nothing to lose because
we’ve already been written off,
it was probably a good warm-up
at Burnley in hindsight! Anything
could happen though on the
day, especially in a cup tie at
Wembley. We’ve got to enjoy the
day and occasion, embrace the
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BRISTOL CITY
16 UTB
challenge and see what happens.
It would be a huge upset that
goes without saying. An excellent
season could become one
nobody ever forgets, if we get a
couple of positive home results
before the semi-final, we’d be in
an unbelievably strong position.
We’ve done so well to get to the
last four in the cup, we’ve gone
one step further than a couple of
years ago. But again, as I keep
saying, it’s all about Bristol City
at Bramall Lane, that’s the main
focus at the moment.”
UTB: The hunt for your 250th
career league goal is still going;
you must have thought it was
going to come against Wigan
Athletic earlier this month?
BS: “I honestly thought I’d
done it with the late strike against
Norwich when I cut inside from
the left and hit the woodwork, it
looked in from the moment I hit
it, but unfortunately it didn’t go in
and against Wigan I think with a
bit more match sharpness I would
have taken one of those chances.
The first one was a great reflex
save in all honesty, but I’d really
expect to be putting chances
like that one away more often
than not from there. The header
I’m trying to generate the pace
on the ball from the cross that’s
slightly behind me and again
Amos has managed to get a good
hand on it and tip it over. I was
kicking myself all night though
for missing the one in front of
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BRISTOL CITY
UTB 17
the Kop, it would have been the
perfect way to hit the milestone.
I was in the right place at the time
though and you know me I’ll keep
doing that until it comes, I’ve
backed myself all my career.”
UTB: Despite perhaps not
scoring as many goals as you’d
have liked this season, how
would you assess your overall
contribution to the cause
on the field?
BS: “I’ve been disappointed
with the number of goals I’ve
scored this season, but I still
feel I’ve contributed a lot in
other ways though. My role
has changed slightly, and I’ve
come on in games where we’ve
needed to see it out holding on
to a narrow lead and I’ve been
pleased with how I’ve managed
to contribute to the whole team
from the top of the pitch, but
obviously it hasn’t been my most
prolific season in front of goal.
My experience and maturity
have helped me through the
tougher days, I still want to score
as many goals as possible. I got
15 last season so to have got
nowhere near that mark this
season has hurt me personally,
but I still believe I can score
goals and I’ll back myself to stick
the next chance away whenever
it comes. A run is always just
around the corner for a striker,
and you always have to remind
yourself of that.”
UTB: How much excitement
and pride do you still have
skippering your boyhood club?
BS: “I had a little injury at the
start of the season, nobody,
especially me, likes to be injured
and it was tough, but to still be
training every day, leading some
of the exciting younger lads we
have performing well for the club
and being involved in such a
great season to date, 41 games
in, I’m still immensely proud
and hopefully there are more
memories and special times to
enjoy together between now
and the end of the season. I’ve
said it before, I learnt quickly
that as the captain, you have to
be focused on others not just
worrying about yourself. You
have to lead by example, Burnley
was an example of that, we didn’t
throw the towel in and get a
good hiding, we stuck at it until
the end and then focused on
making sure we bounced back
against Cardiff which we did
comfortably in the end. We’ve
got a number of leaders in the
group, I’m just the lucky one who
is known as the skipper and gets
to wear the armband when I’m on
the pitch.”
UNDER-21s UPDATE
Some of our U21 players out on
loan have found the net in recent
weeks as a host of players
continue their development.
Midfielder George Broadbent recently
netted his fourth goal of the campaign
for National League side Boreham Wood
in their 4-0 win at Maidstone. Broadbent
continues to be a regular alongside Zak
Brunt with Boreham Wood currently sat
inside the play-off positions.
Elsewhere, Harrison Neal continues to
play regularly for Barrow who are fighting
for a play-off spot in League Two, whilst in
League One Harry Boyes played as Lincoln
pulled off a surprise 2-0 win against title
challengers Plymouth at Home Park.
Finally, Theo Williams netted his
fourth goal for Farsley Celtic in
their battle to stay in National
League North.
Meanwhile, United’s U21s
are approaching the final
stretch of another impressive
campaign with just four
games remaining of
the regular season.
Micky Collins’s
side have
stretched their
lead to an
impressive 20
points in the
Professional
Development
League at the time
of writing, and faced
Millwall today.
⊳ Micky Collins has enjoyed
great success with United’s
U21s this season
UNDER-18s UPDATE
United’s U18s took four points off
rivals Wednesday after back-toback
Steel City derby clashes
against the Owls.
In a six-goal thriller at Shirecliffe, United
led through a George Dickinson penalty
before going 2-1 down. Kurtis Havenhand
levelled, but Wednesday went 3-2 up
until Brandon Ly rescued a point with two
minutes remaining.
United had to come from behind again
at Middlewood Road with Sam Aston
cancelling out Wednesday’s opener at the
start of the second 45. The winner arrived
when Sai Sachdev’s cross was sliced into
his own net by Sean Fusire.
United then slipped to a 2-1 defeat at
home to Coventry, with a trialist on target
for the Blades.
Another good weekend for
United Women saw Jonathan
Morgan’s side make it back-toback
wins after a 4-0 success against
Coventry United.
After several near misses, United
opened the scoring when Sophie
Haywood netted her first United goal after
Courtney Sweetman-Kirk had blocked a
clearance from Coventry ‘keeper Eleanor
Heeps. Haywood didn’t have to wait long
for her second when she dribbled past
several challenges before finishing in
the far corner. Five minutes before the
break the game was all but sealed when
Sweetman-Kirk handed Mia Enderby a
tap-in at the far post.
United continued to dominate after the
break but had to wait until stoppage time
for a fourth when Maddy Cusack’s freekick
was headed in by Sweetman-Kirk.
Prior to this win, the Blades narrowly
lost to a strong Jamaican national team
2-0 in a friendly at Leicester’s King Power
Stadium.
ROY ENJOYS HIS
SPECIAL DAY
Supporter Roy Ashton enjoyed a day to
remember as United marked his landmark 100th
birthday by inviting him and his family to Bramall
Lane for the Good Friday game against Wigan
Athletic.
Roy was guest of honour in the boardroom and
was then introduced to supporters at half time
before being greeted by members of the current
Blades side.
Chris Basham and Ben Osborn then had
the honour of presenting Roy with a special
personalised shirt to mark the occasion, as
the Blades enjoyed a successful afternoon
with a 1-0 win over the Latics.
Roy, who has been attending Bramall
Lane since he was four, served
during WWII and continues to be
a season ticket holder.
He watched United at
Wembley in the 1936 FA Cup
Final and has passed his love
of the Blades on to his family who
also regularly attend games.
We hope you enjoyed your
big day Roy and look forward
to seeing you at many more
games in the future.
I N M E M O R Y
RIP Eddie Colquhoun
Sheffield United will
pay tribute to one of our
greatest ever leaders
tonight, following the sad
news over the weekend
that Eddie Colquhoun had
passed away.
Born in Prestonpans,
Scotland, in March 1945,
he made his Football
League debut for Bury
before joining West
Bromwich Albion in 1967.
It was Arthur Rowley
who brought him to
Bramall Lane, and his
leadership qualities would
see him made captain of
the side which clinched
promotion back to the top
flight in 1971.
Eddie was strong and
quick as well as being
exceptional in the air,
and his partnership with
John Flynn became the
very heart of the defence
of arguably one of our
greatest teams. In 1978 he
moved to America to join
Washington Diplomats,
after making 430 starts
for United, scoring 23
goals with an additional
three appearances from
the bench.
The proud Scot
represented his country
nine times, and it was one
of the most unforgettable
moments of the 125 Dinner
at Ponds Forge back in
2014 when, working with
the SFA and his wonderful
wife Maureen, the club
arranged for a cap to be
awarded to him. Back in
the day, Scotland didn’t
issue one unless you had
played in all the home
internationals that season,
an accolade he missed.
Stuart McCall, then
manager of Motherwell,
drove down to do the
honours to a shocked and
bemused Eddie – a man
that didn’t court attention
or fuss who became centre
stage in front of over 1,000
people. The gesture and
applause brought him
to tears.
Eddie was a true
gentleman. He loved his
career and adored his
Blades. He was carved out
of Scottish granite both
on the outside and on the
field of play with the heart
of the lion displayed on his
country’s coat of arms, but
his warmth on the inside
and generosity to friends
and fellow Blades was and
is legendary.
The club will miss him
hugely, and his loss leaves
another colossal hole in
our family and, of course,
in his own. Our love and
thoughts go to Fiona,
Heather and all Eddie’s
family and friends at this
saddest of times.
Blades historian JOHN GARRETT’S long-running inimitable
account of following the Blades always provides a talking point
as UTB again extends a platform for his popular article...
Spooning at Wembley...
We should have played in the first
ever Wembley final 100 years ago
this very year.
In fact, we were masters of the semis
back in the 1920s to a certain degree,
making it there on three occasions. The
first attempt of the decade coming in
1923. There had been feverish activity to
get the stadium open and ready for the
Empire exhibition and also, clearly, to give
domestic football’s greatest competition a
spiritual home after being played at such
venues as The Crystal Palace, Stamford
Bridge, Fallowfield and The Oval, as well
as our beloved Bramall Lane welcoming
the famous final to its footprint, albeit in a
replay in 1912.
1923 saw us meet Bolton Wanderers at
Old Trafford (another final venue where
we triumphed in 1915) on March 24th in
front of 75,000 people where the Blades
lost narrowly to a looping goal from the
legendary David Jack – think the play-off
▲ Sheffield descends on Wembley Way back in 1993
final vs Palace and David Hopkin, but in
black and white and with Harry Enfield
doing the commentary. The Trotters were
off to meet West Ham United and be one
of the first clubs to walk up Wembley Way
to take part in what came to be called ‘The
White Horse Final’ after the huge crowd
continually spilled out on to the pitch and
a police horse – Billy who, of course, just
happened to be white – helped move them
back. Incidentally, the record crowd for a
final up until then had been held by the
Blades and Spurs when they met in the
1901 final – another that went to a replay
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BRISTOL CITY
36 UTB
and one that we lost at Burnden Park
in Bolton.
We made the final in 1925, and the semi
took place for us at Stamford Bridge against
Southampton on March 25th of that year.
We won 2-1 (Tunstall and a Parker own
goal) and ‘keeper Charles Sutcliffe saved
a pen. We played in all red that day by the
way. We had two replays in 1928 against
eventual finalists Huddersfield Town as well
– busy decade.
It was only after we got to the semis
this year, I began to think how lucky our
generation of Blades has been in terms of
big days out in such matches. My dad was
born in 1925 and died in 1983, and in all
that time the only Wembley appearance
that the club made was in 1936 when we
faced Arsenal and lost the game narrowly
1-0. It was a game I have been told many
times, even by players who took part, that
we could and should have won, but that’s
another story. After that, the nearest he
▲ Charles Sutcliffe saved a penalty in the semi-final of 1925
got was 1961 when we came up against
Leicester City and got dispatched, again
after a couple of replays. He promised my
older brother that he would take him to the
one at Elland Road and, as tickets were
at a premium, invested in a Caxton home
printing set to forge a couple to make sure
they were in. I doubt he was an expert, but
in they got! I wish they still survived, I would
have loved to have seen one!
I never grew up expecting ever to see us
in a major game. I loved cup final day and
couldn’t wait to get settled down at 11.15 so
the build up could start at the team hotel
and to me it was always a bit of an out of
body experience. It was something that
I never expected us to do, and to be fair,
by the time I was watching the club under
my own steam with my mates, we were
plummeting at an alarming rate towards
Division Four!
By the time we got through to the semi
in 1993, I think it left me in a state of shock.
We had a couple of good runs under
Harry Bassett, but even I didn’t really see it
coming, and then there was the campaign
to have it played at Wembley.
I always thought if we played our
neighbours at the original venue at Leeds,
with the size and width of the pitch, we
could have a good go at them. All of a
sudden, you had people hanging round
with petitions to get it played at Wembley
on a pitch that they could outplay us on
with the width and pace that they had.
I wanted to get to the final, and if that
meant kicking lumps out of the culture club
at Elland Road, that was fine by me. Plus,
Leeds was a lot easier to get to and more
comfortable than the wooden bench seats
that had probably been there when Tunstall
won the cup for us in 1925!
As the Waddle free kick scythed past
Alan Kelly, I just knew my fears were to be
confirmed. My ex-missus was sat next to
me and had decided to go to the loo as
UTB 37
▲ The spoon which belonged to Les
the game kicked off and returned to ask if
we had scored. The answer is, of course,
unprintable 30 years on…
One of my old mates in football, and from
days gone by, Scouse Mark (who was and
is a Toffee) had sagely told me in the week
leading up to the game that coming back
after if you had lost was the longest journey
ever. You know, he was wrong, it was
much worse.
In fact, as I said earlier, no matter
what the outcome of the game (which is
possibly a blessing) our generation has
seen more than its fair share of showpiece
games and big days out. Whether it
be at Wembley, Cardiff, Old Trafford or
wherever, and I suppose that also changes
the expectation level of fans for what or
where they think that we should be as a
club. I mean, it’s easy to forget that we
were also part of the biggest breakaway
in football history when we effectively
resigned from the Football League to form
what has become the most powerful and
lucrative in the world, and that is, of course,
the Premier League. David Capper, who
was the company secretary back then,
often told the tale of what a momentous
moment that was, and even now I doubt
if all those involved had any inkling as to
where it would all be 30 years later – how
could they?
It kind of summed us up back then in
so much as, within a year of creating yet
more Blades history, we were back in the
Football League and once again with a
three-sided ground. You really couldn’t
have made it up. Certain things bring it
home to you how much that bigger stage
really means in the grander scheme
though. My older brother ran coaches
for the club for years, some of the older
readers may remember the caravan that
used to be parked up against the wall of
the gents when you came into the Kop from
the turnstiles at the top end of Shoreham
near to Cherry Street, and the trip to
Wembley for the ‘Sheffield Semi Final’ was
made with him from The Royal Standard.
I will never forget him checking the last
Blade on before saying “right, next stop
Wembley, I have been waiting for 40 years
to say that” it brought a lump to my throat
even though it wasn’t technically true as we
had to stop at the services for a pee break.
Then again, I also don’t suppose “Next stop
Watford Gap for a pee” has quite the same
romance, does it?
So, here we are on the verge of another
trip down the M1. We may have even been
when this article gets printed, so if you
are reading this and the game has been
and gone, I hope you all had a great time,
and the lads did us proud. If it gets printed
before, then hopefully I will see most of you
down there taking out a loan for a hotdog
and pint and you an your family have a time
that you will always talk about whatever
the result, because Wembley really is one
of the best stadiums in the world and the
place where every football player wants to
strut his or her stuff – the venue of legends
and of that, there is no doubt. All I ask is
don’t bring too much tat back!
I used to go and have a cup of tea with
an old boy that lived in the shadow of the
ground by the name of Les, and what an
interesting man he was. Les had lived in
the same house most of his life and had
been born to a very different Sheffield at
the turn of the 1900s. He could recall the
team winning the 1915 FA Cup Final at Old
Trafford as a real young un, but his father
had taken him in 1925 to see Gillespie lead
them to glory in a Wembley that was still
shiny, new and a trek out of London back
then, let alone from Sheffield. Many of the
Empire exhibition buildings were still open
to visit back then, in fact a fair few still
survive to this day at the Wembley Park
end of Wembley Way in the form of Kwik Fit
and other businesses. Each represented a
part of the Empire and it must have made
fascinating viewing for a young Les. For
him, prior to that, the furthest he had been
was Cleethorpes for the day.
Now, what do you think he chose to bring
back as a souvenir of this piece of Blades’
history?
“NOW, WHAT DO YOU THINK HE
CHOSE TO BRING BACK AS A
SOUVENIR OF THIS PIECE OF BLADES’
HISTORY? A PROGRAMME? TOO
EXPENSIVE BACK THEN. THEY
WERE FOR THE POSH FOLKS. NO
HALF AND HALF SCARVES THANK
GOODNESS, NO COLOURED JESTER
HATS, NO WEMBLEY T-SHIRTS.
LES BROUGHT BACK A SPOON”
A programme? Too expensive back
then. They were for the posh folks. No
half and half scarves thank goodness,
no coloured jester hats, no Wembley
T-shirts. Les brought back a spoon. It’s a
nice spoon, enamel top lettered “British
Empire Exhibition, Wembley 1923” but it’s a
spoon. Simple.
Now I can tell you that it was treasured
by him as a memory of success that was
personal. He went in 1936 when we lost to
Arsenal, and he was working then so he
bought a programme and even a rosette,
but his souvenir of the finest moment of
triumph he ever saw as Blade was a simple
teaspoon, and it meant the world. He gave
it to me, and I still have it. In fact, I may
even take it with me back there as my
mascot for the day. Believe me, I have tried
everything else!
WHAT’S THE STORY?
In every issue of UTB this season, our regular contributor DAVE
BURKINSHAW features a Blades related photograph from his
personal archive and reveals the story behind it…
The 1971-72 season began with
the newly promoted Blades
making a storming start to life
back in the top flight.
United won eight of their first 10 league
games and drew the other two. Amongst
the wins were victories over the teams
who had won the Football League
Championship (now Premier League) title
in the previous three seasons. They had
beaten Leeds United 3-0 at home and
then achieved consecutive 1-0 away wins
at Everton and Arsenal.
Across the Pennines, also making a
fine start to the season were Manchester
United. They had won six, drawn three
and lost one of their first 10 games. The
Blades’ 11th game was another real test
for them - a visit to Old Trafford on 2nd
October 1971.
This was a real early season table
topping showdown and interest in
the game from both sets of fans was
huge. There was also massive interest
nationally in the game with experts
wondering whether the Blades could
sustain their fabulous start or whether
Manchester United were now really over
the Matt Busby era and were building a
new successful future under manager
Frank O’Farrell. Household names like
Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis
Law were still regular starters in the Red
Devils’ team. The game was the main
event on BBC TV’s Match of the Day.
An official crowd of 51,338 was reported
although there were many thousands
locked out of the ground in those days
when not all matches were all ticket.
How many thousands missed out varies
according to the reports you read,
although the figure of 20,000 did feature
in newspaper reports at the time.
The two photographs featured with
this article were taken during this Old
Trafford meeting. One shows Blades’
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BRISTOL CITY
UTB 41
highly influential midfielder Tony Currie
having a shot at goal with Manchester
United midfielder Alan Gowling watching
on. The other image shows winger Alan
Woodward taking on Manchester United
full-back Tony Dunne with their number
five, Steve James, there as reinforcement.
Woodward had already scored four
league goals prior to Old Trafford and
both he and Currie were seen as possible
future England players.
The game itself, played on a warm
sunny day, was a tight, tense affair with
the Blades matching their illustrious
opponents. A key moment for United
was when left full-back Ted Hemsley had
to hobble off inside the last 10 minutes.
In the days of only one substitute,
forward Gil Reece took his place. In
the 85th minute Best opened up the
United defence on the left hand side
with a pacey run gliding past defenders
and ending with a precise shot across
goalkeeper John Hope into the far
corner of the net. A wonderful goal from
a tremendous player which has been
replayed for years by the BBC.
As the Blades pushed forward for
an equaliser, Alan Gowling scored a
second for the home team two minutes
after Best’s goal to clinch a 2-0 win for
Manchester United. However, the Blades
had impressed experts and their fans
alike with their performance.
In the event neither side could maintain
their sizzling early season form with the
Blades finishing 10th and Manchester
United eighth.
HAPPY
BIRTHDAY
WEMBLEY!
We will all have other things on our minds when we
travel to Wembley, but one fact which has slipped
under the radar is the grand old stadium’s centenary
this week. Mike Firth, co-editor of local nostalgia
magazine My Kind of Town, explains…
When fans of the Blades and
Manchester City converge on
London this weekend, we will be
arriving at a very special time indeed for
Wembley Stadium – its 100th birthday.
Way back in mid-April, 1923, the final
touches were being made to what was
agreed by many to be the world’s greatest
sporting arena – “the cathedral of football”
as Pele later dubbed it.
All those years ago, The Empire
Stadium, as it was originally known, had
been built in exactly 300 days at a cost
of £750,000. It was completed on April
24th, only four days before staging its first
FA Cup final, but its main role was to be a
focal point of the following year’s British
Empire Exhibition.
The original plan was to demolish the
great stadium following the exhibition so
no-one could have guessed that – in all
its guises – it would continue to be one of
the world’s premier sporting venues for a
century and more. Even after all this time,
just the mention of the word “Wembley”
fills supporters with a tingling excitement.
And as Blades fans know right now,
making plans for a trip there just cannot be
bettered.
All manner of sports have featured
at Wembley and, as far as football
goes, scores of talented players have
been elevated to the level of legends
on its famous playing surface – the
“hallowed turf”.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BRISTOL CITY
UTB 47
▲ Pc Scorey and Billy attempting to clear the playing surface. Wembley’s first
football match eventually kicked off 45 minutes late with a human touchline
We all know about the Wembley exploits
of Stanley Matthews, Geoff Hurst and
others – including the Lionesses last
summer – but the stadium’s very first
character to achieve legendary status in
the world of football was someone who
never played the game. Indeed, George
Scorey had very little interest in the sport
at all. His main passions in life were horses
and playing the trumpet!
However, 100 years ago, the FA Cup
final on April 28th saw George, a police
constable, take centre stage when a
crush of upwards of 200,000 supporters
threatened to see the West Ham
United versus Bolton Wanderers fixture
abandoned before a ball was kicked.
A World War One hero, Pc Scorey was
on crowd control duty at Wembley in the
saddle of an 11-year-old horse called Billy.
Together with almost 600 other
police officers, including eight more on
horseback, they persuaded the huge
crowd to move off the pitch and something
of a human touchline was formed around
the playing surface. Pc Scorey’s efforts
were perhaps no grander than any of the
other officers on duty, but because Billy
was a grey horse, it was this duo that
stood out in the remarkable Pathe News
black and white movie footage and in the
following day’s newspapers. So, although
Bolton were the first team to be presented
with the famous silver trophy, the match
has forever been known as the ‘White
Horse Final’.
The Blades narrowly missed out on the
honour of being one of the first teams
to play at the stadium when their 1923
FA Cup journey was halted by Bolton
Wanderers at the semi-final stage. In those
days of course, teams reaching the last
four of the competition played at neutral
venues and the Trotters triumphed 1-0 at
Old Trafford.
However, United only had to wait a
further two years before enjoying their first
trip to the Empire Stadium, beating Cardiff
City 1-0 in the FA Cup final on April 25th,
1925 – still our last success there!
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Each week PAUL HOLLAND looks back on a prominent game
BRISTOL CITY 1-3 SHEFFIELD UNITED
SATURDAY 14th FEBRUARY 2015
United came from a goal behind
to record a 3-1 victory at Ashton
Gate, exacting revenge on their
2-1 defeat at Bramall Lane on the opening
day of the season.
With a back injury to regular ‘keeper,
Mark Howard, Iain Turner was selected in
goal, whilst defender Terry Kennedy was
handed a rare start.
The first half was even but with
opportunities a rarity until Matt Smith fired
home from close-range turning in future
Blade Luke Freeman’s deflected cross on
41 minutes.
A second-half rally saw Nigel Clough’s
side score three goals in reply. Before this
Freeman’s long-range drive threatened to
double the hosts’ advantage but, on 54
minutes, the Blades were level.
The move began with Chris Basham
in the middle of midfield, and his ball
to the right found John Brayford who
delivered a low cross where Jason Holt
was waiting. Holt’s effort was kept out by
Frankie Fielding, however, in the ensuing
scramble, Matt Done got the vital touch to
steer the ball home.
The hosts threatened to re-take the lead
and were thankful for Michael Doyle, who
blocked Wade Elliott’s effort before Bob
Harris booted Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’s
shot off the line.
United were on top for the final 15
minutes, so it came as no surprise when
Done added his second on 77 minutes
after he finished Jamie Murphy’s cross at
the near post.
The victory was secured five minutes
later. Again, Basham was the catalyst with
a strong challenge in midfield which saw
Murphy expose the Robins defence before
beating Derrick Williams and finishing
past Fielding.
United were holding the final
1998 play-off spot in the second tier
with five games remaining ahead of a
home game against mid-table Bury. This
one-sided encounter saw Graham Stuart
open the scoring from the penalty spot,
with Dean Saunders adding a brace in
the final quarter to secure a 3-0 win. The
brace for Saunders was two of 12 goals
for the campaign.
Five wins from the previous
1992 six top flight games had seen
Dave Bassett’s United climb to eighth
ahead of a home game against fourth
placed Arsenal. In this 1-1 draw Bobby
Davison netted for the first time since
his brace on debut against Wednesday,
With three games remaining,
2010 United sat 11th in the
Championship but well adrift of the
trouble inside the drop zone. The Owls
took the lead at Hillsborough through
Darren Potter, but Lee Williamson
equalised for United as the game finished
1-1. United ended the campaign in 8th,
whilst Wednesday went down.
United fought back to register
2022 a vital point in the race for the
play-offs in this game against Bristol City
at Ashton Gate. The Blades fell behind
to a counter attack goal by Chris Martin
but Paul Heckingbottom’s side, who were
just inside the top six by two points, hit
Morgan Gibbs-White moved into double
WHO WOULD BE
A MANAGER?
Our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW casts a glance over former
United players who have tried their hand at management...
Steve Bruce...
Steve Bruce, born in Corbridge
Northumberland, began his
professional playing career as a
solid central defender with Gillingham.
His fine form attracted clubs from higher
divisions, and he joined Norwich City in
August 1984 where he enjoyed some
success winning the Football League Cup
in 1984-85 and promotion back to the top
flight in 1985-86.
It was with Manchester United where
Steve’s playing career was especially
memorable. He helped his team win 12
trophies including three Premier League
titles and three FA Cups.
After leaving Old Trafford he moved
to Birmingham City in 1996. After St
Andrew’s, Steve joined the Blades as
player-manager in July 1998 and was seen
as a major acquisition providing the team
with leadership both on and off the field.
He became the first Blades’ current
manager to play for the club in a game
▲ Steve Bruce sat in his office at Bramall Lane in 1998
other than friendlies. His League debut
was on 8th August 1998 at home to
Swindon Town in a 2-1 victory. However,
injuries limited his appearances and he
soon called time on his playing career to
concentrate on managing full-time. He had
played 10 league games for the Blades.
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BRISTOL CITY
UTB 51
Overall, he had enjoyed a fabulous
playing career and Steve will be
remembered as a superb strong central
defender unlucky not to be capped at full
international level by England.
His first managerial stint was eventful
especially with boardroom level politics
and the controversial fifth round FA Cup
tie at Arsenal in February 1999 where a
controversial Gunners goal saw Steve
threaten to take his team off the field.
Steve resigned in May 1999 due to the
sale of key players, the lack of funds for
transfers and perceived lack of support
from the boardroom.
He subsequently became Huddersfield
Town manager in May 1999 until October
2000 when he was sacked. Then
followed short stints as manager of both
Wigan Athletic and Crystal Palace in 2001
before he took up the managerial reins of
Birmingham City in December that year.
He enjoyed some success with the Blues
winning two promotions to the Premier
League in 2001-02 and 2006-07.
More Premier League jobs came his
way with a second stint at Wigan Athletic
before he moved back to his native north
east as manager of Sunderland between
May 2009 and November 2011.
Following his dismissal at Sunderland
he was appointed manager of Hull City in
June 2012 where he was to remain until
2016. Again, he enjoyed success, winning
two promotions with the Tigers in 2012-13
and 2015-16. Steve also took City to the
FA Cup final for first time in their history
in 2013-14. On the way to this final Hull
beat the Blades 5-3 at Wembley in the
semi-finals.
After leaving Hull he had a
disappointing spell at Aston Villa
between October 2016 and October
2018. Following his dismissal by Villa he
was Sheffield Wednesday’s manager
▲ In his last managerial post to date at West Brom in 2022
from January 2019 to his resignation
in July 2019.
His left Hillsborough to take up the
manager’s post at Newcastle United, the
team he had supported as a boy. Steve
led the Magpies through a difficult spell
including the Covid pandemic, keeping
the team in the Premier League. He left
the club by mutual consent in October
2021 when new owners took over.
His most recent managerial spell
came at West Bromwich Albion between
February 2022 to October 2022 where
he was dismissed following a number of
disappointing results.
Steve has had the distinction of being
manager of both Sheffield clubs (along
with Danny Wilson), three major clubs from
Birmingham area and two of the north
east’s biggest clubs. It remains to be seen
if there are any further managerial posts in
his long and distinguished career.
Today, we look back over the programme
from Friday 9th April 1993 as United
welcome Manchester City to Bramall Lane.
With just seven games remaining, the home
win over Leeds three days before this fixture had
moved the Blades outside of the bottom three, with
Dave Bassett’s side having played less games than
the three teams below them.
After a John Pemberton own goal gave City
the lead in this game, United battled back to earn
another crucial point thanks to Brian Deane’s 69th
minute equaliser in front of the Sky cameras.
REMEMBERING MEL REES
It was the abiding memory for most during the 1992-93 season, the
reception Mel Rees received from close to 80,000 people as he walked
around Wembley Stadium...
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BRISTOL CITY
Clearly showing the strain
of his brave battle against
cancer, the popular
Welshman received an
emotive response from
both Blades and Owls
fans as he embarked on a
lap of honour on FA Cup
semi-final day.
Less than two months
later, Mel passed away,
aged just 26.
A much-loved member
of United’s famed closeknit
group of players of
the time, two members
of the goalkeepers’
union still remember
their colleague with great
fondness, almost 30 years
on from his sad passing.
“Mel Rees first and
foremost was just an
outstanding person,
a really good guy,”
explained Simon Tracey.
“He was a funny man;
he was always good
company. He was really
well liked in the dressing
room and having worked
closely with him; I can
tell you he was an
outstanding goalkeeper.”
“He was a wonderful
character,” agreed fellow
custodian Alan Kelly.
“He was larger than
life, some of the jackets
he’d walk in wearing on
a Monday would bring
a smile to your face.
He could do that Mel;
he would always make
you smile.”
Mel had played a total
of eight games for the
club prior to his diagnosis,
and had even made the
Wales squad at the back
end of the 1991-92 season
but he had to withdraw.
His treatment initially
seemed to have a
positive effect and he was
even on the bench for the
Premier League game
against Aston Villa in the
January.
Sadly though, the
disease would return and
eventually it was a brave
battle which he could
not win.
“He was an outstanding
‘keeper but all of a
sudden this illness arrived
▲ Mel pictured with fellow Welsh goalkeeper Neville Southall
and got hold of him, it
was just a very sad time,”
Tracey recalled.
“There was a point
where we thought he was
coming through it, there
was some positive news
during the season but
sadly he soon fell ill again,
and it was a real dark day
when he passed for all of
us who knew him.
“Mel was one of those
types of people who liked
to live his life, he enjoyed
his life and he made sure
that was going to happen
right up to the end. He
is much missed still, and
the fact we’re still talking
about him says a lot about
the person.”
Seeing what Mel was
having to go through put
things into perspective
for Kelly, who had taken
over the gloves during the
season following injury
to Tracey.
A lasting memory for
the Republic of Ireland
international was the
bravery shown by his
colleague, in the most
difficult of circumstances.
“Seeing Mel, and
seeing what he had to go
through, and looking on
to see how strong he was
- he was so brave,” Kelly
explained.
“It culminated with
Wembley, walking
around Wembley and
being applauded by
both sides of the city,
that was sobering for
all of us really. It put life
into perspective. We’re
fortunate as footballers
UTB 61
to do what we do, but
when something like
what happened to Mel
happens, it grounds you
as an individual.
“He didn’t play a lot of
games, but the quality of
his goalkeeping in those
games has resonated
throughout Sheffield
United’s recent history.
The players and fans
at that time will quite
rightly applaud him for
his ability as a top quality
goalkeeper.
“To create that in such
a short period, it doesn’t
happen by chance, it
happens by talent and
how he came across as a
person. That’s his legacy,
the imprint of how he was
as a person on the people
of Sheffield.”
United sat second a point off the
it was a vital stage of the
THE GAMES…
This now famous result ensured
Manchester United took a
major step forward in the title
race. John Sheridan’s 65th
minute penalty had Sheffield
Wednesday in front at Old
86th minute goal looked to have
rescued a point. The same player
then scored again deep into
stoppage time, resulting in manic
celebrations on and off the field.
Villa’s 0-0 draw with Coventry
ensured it was an even bigger
result. Forest looked increasingly
likely to be relegated after a
4-3 defeat to QPR, whilst fellow
strugglers Middlesbrough and
Oldham also tasted defeat.
Stephanie, one of Rainbow Blades’
transgender members, has been attending
matches since she was six. The standout
moment of her 64 years supporting the
club is the 2003 play-off semi-final against
Nottingham Forest.
Stephanie is keen to promote the
importance of calling out transphobia. “The
best thing to do is report it to a steward who
can take action immediately,” she says. “Or
alternatively you can report it to the club.” You
can also report anonymously via Kick It Out.
Finally, what message would Stephanie
give other Unitedites?
“Rainbow Blades has worked hard along
with Sheffield United for everyone to be
welcome at football, regardless of gender
or sexual orientation. We’re all Blades. Let’s
support them together.”
AN UPDATE FROM OUR...
SENIOR BLADES
Two representatives from Senior
11th April.
Our secretary, Sheila Herring
and chairwoman Kathryn
were very lucky to get a photo
with club and team captain, Billy
Sharp, whilst they were there.
Huge thanks to Billy for
popping into the Senior Blades
at the same time, where our
members were thrilled to see
him and gave him a very warm
welcome. It made the day
very special for us all, many
thanks again.
WILSON GIVES BACK
WITH PREMIER
United Women’s
goalkeeper Nina Wilson
has recently been
developing the next crop
of local talent at our Girls
Premier League Kicks
sessions at Leisure United
Westfield. Wilson is
currently on loan at Wolves
but still finds time to
support our participants.
One participant who
has benefitted from Nina’s
coaching has been Izzy
Thorpe:
“With Nina, I think just
having a professional player
here, it makes a difference
with me and with the
younger girls as they look
up to her as we all do. It’s
a nice, safe place to learn.
My dream is to play football
professionally, but even if
that doesn’t work out, I still
want to be involved in it.”
Nina sees the sessions
as an opportunity to inspire
the girls: “I think it’s massive
that the girls see me as a
role model, especially since
I’m a female coach which
is something I never had
growing up.
“I would have loved to
come to these kinds of
sessions with female
professional
players. It’s
massive for
them to see
what they
can be in their
future and
that’s why I love coming
here so much.”
A successful season is edging
towards a conclusion for Bristol
City, with manager Nigel Pearson
eager to set his team ambitious targets for
the final weeks of the campaign.
With their Championship status secure
for another season, Pearson has built a
team that has proved it can compete with
the best in this division and now they are
keen to finish the campaign on a high.
“It’s really important for us that we finish
the season with a really meaningful run
of games where, even if we don’t win, we
are trying everything to win and look as
though we’re giving our everything,” says
Pearson. “Ultimately, we’ve got to use this
time now to develop ourselves.”
Last week’s 2-2 draw with promotionchasing
Middlesbrough was the latest
example of Bristol City matching a side at
the top end of the table and the ambition
for former Sheffield Wednesday captain
Pearson next season will be getting his
side in the mix for promotion.
STAR MAN
The goals have been spread
around the Bristol City squad
this season, yet this
experienced marksman has led their
scoring statistics after taking his tally
into double figures.
A marksman who started his career
at Carlisle, he went on to secure bigmoney
moves to Huddersfield and
Burnley before sealing a £5million
switch to Bristol City in January 2020.
He has been a consistent source of
goals since that move and
manager Nigel Pearson
confirms he is a
player who offers so
much to his side on
different levels.
“Last season
he spent a lot of
time on the bench
and was a model
professional,” said
the Robins boss of
Wells. “He was never
at any point negative.
“He wasn’t happy
not playing and
I’ve always had
a very good
relationship
with him. He
focuses his
energy on
He’s our top scorer and at 32,
he’s earned a new contract.
I’m delighted he’s staying
— OPPOSITION FOCUS
THE LOWDOWN...
...on Bristol City
Each week UTB takes an alternative look over our opponents...
INTO THE LEAGUE...
City joined the Football
League in 1901 when they
became only the third
club south of Birmingham
(following in the footsteps
of Woolwich Arsenal and
Luton Town) to perform in
the competition.
1909 FINAL...
In 1909 the Robins faced
Manchester United in the
FA Cup final with both
clubs aiming to secure
their first-ever FA Cup
title. City were narrowly
beaten 1-0 and it is fair to
say that both clubs have
been on very different
paths ever since.
FREEVIEW...
The Robins moved into
Ashton Gate in 1904
but prior to that played
their games at St John’s
Lane. The stadium had
a rather unique feature,
which made it popular
amongst fans but not
hugely lucrative, as the
nearby Mutton Hill gave
supporters a free view
of the pitch.
ITALIAN CONNECTIONS...
Among the many
nicknames City have
had over the years, one
you may not have heard
is the Garibaldians. The
club were given it due to
the similarities between
their red kits and the
red uniforms worn by
Italian general Giuseppe
Garibaldi’s men.
DOUBLE FIGURES...
UTB 79
The Robins’ biggest
league victory came
against Aldershot
in 1946, when they
won 9-0. However,
City have hit double
figures in the FA Cup. In
1960, they hammered
Chichester City 11-0.
FAVOURITES
with Anel Ahmedhodžic...
IN EVERY EDITION OF UTB THIS SEASON,
WE TALK TO A CURRENT MEMBER OF
UNITED’S FIRST TEAM SQUAD TO FIND OUT
SOME OF THEIR FAVOURITE THINGS...
FAVOURITE...
BAND OR ARTIST... There’s so many, it is difficult to choose. I’m going
to go with Future.
BOX SET/TV SERIES... Breaking Bad ↘ is a big favourite of mine.
FILM... It’s between two, I can’t decide. It’s Shutter Island and
Interstellar.
PHONE APP... Twitter is the one I use the most.
COMPUTER GAME... I like my games; I’ll say it’s between Call of Duty
and Rocket League.
HOLIDAY DESTINATION... I enjoyed going to Dubai.
OTHER SPORT TO PLAY... I genuinely don’t play any other
sport, I’m all about football.
OTHER SPORT TO WATCH... I’m not a watcher of other
sports either!
SPORTSMAN... Zlatan Ibrahimović ↗ is a big
hero of mine.
COMEDIAN... I like Jimmy Carr.
BOOK... I am Zlatan. Zlatan Ibrahimović’s
autobiography was a good read.
CURRENT TEAMMATE... I like them all, I can’t pick one!
GROUND TO PLAY AT... I once played a Champions
League game at Zenit and that was
some stadium.
MEAL... This is something that probably
only Bosnian people will know, it’s
called cevapi. It’s like the national
dish of Bosnia. It’s like small bits of
lamb. Very nice.
CHOCOLATE BAR... Marabou. Only Swedes
will know this!
KARAOKE SONG… It’s actually a John Denver
song. Take Me Home, Country Roads.

A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius
and cause lifechanging injuries,
while entering the pitch endangers
players, managers and match
officials.
We know those who commit these
illegal acts do not represent the
majority of supporters.
In the event of any emergency you will hear a safety message
over the PA system. Remain where you are and listen carefully to
the announcement. Comply immediately if it affects your area.
Stewards, Police Officers and Officials will direct you to safe areas,
which may be through Exit Doors/Gates to the street or on to the
playing area. If you are disabled or feel unsafe in a large crowd,
remain where you are until stewards assist you. Remain calm
and do not move unless the announcement affects your area.
