WILD
AT HEART
TV star Ben Fogle is about to take a walk on the wild side with
a new UK tour. Editor Katie Thomson caught up with him to
find out more...
Your tour follows on from your wildly
successful ‘Tales from the Wilderness’
a few years ago. Are you excited to get
out in front of a live audience again?
Yeah I loved doing the last tour. It was
a great opportunity to meet people who
have championed me and watched my
shows over the years. What I wanted to
do with this one was bring something
that is maybe even more relatable for
people. My last show was all about my
experiences with expeditions and how
I’ve used them to build my confidence.
But what I wanted to do this time was
to make a show about how to find
happiness and how to live a simpler
life. Not necessarily like some of the
examples I’ll be sharing of people who
have gone to live in Siberia or outer
Mongolia, but just how to live a happier
life.
I can imagine it’s nearly impossible to
encapsulate all the experiences you’ve
had and how they’ve shaped you and
put that into an evening. Was it an
interesting process to take stock of
everything you’ve done to be able to
pull the show together?
Yeah, the last one was kind of quite
easy because there was a chronology
to it. My journey from being marooned
on an island through to rowing oceans
and ultimately climbing Mount Everest.
This one is a little bit different as this
is sort of a journey around the world
meeting different people and a behind
the scenes look at some of the places
I’ve been and the people I’ve met and
kind of what I’ve taken away from that.
So this was actually quite an interesting
way of analysing some of the experiences
that I’ve had, from walking through the
remains of Chernobyl in Ukraine through
to people who are trying to bring back the
woolly mammoth in Siberia. But at the
heart of it all is this idea that happiness is
kind of a journey, not just a destination.
So many people kind of just trudge
through life waiting for that metaphorical
summit that they will eventually reach.
What I have discovered over the years is
that there are so many people who just
enjoy the whole process and make the
most of the whole journey and that’s what
I’m trying to bring together.
I guess, in that way, you’ve never really
conformed to the nuclear life. We ask
a lot of our children these days; even
though we know as adults how broad
and diverse our interests and abilities
are, we still ask children to conform
to one form of standardised testing.
Would you say you would cover that in
the show, that there’s much more to
life than ticking boxes?
Absolutely, I think that it’s almost like
society wants to make everything
homogeneous. They want all cars to look
the same, all people to look the same,
to learn the same, to have the same
education, to live in the same sort of
house. My upbringing was always very
different to that anyway, in that I spent a
bit of my time in central London, Dorset,
a bit on a little farm in Sussex and a
bit of my time in the wilds of Canada.
It meant that I had quite an eclectic list
of experiences and I think for me, my
struggles with academics and the fact
that I wasn’t very good at sport or exams
meant that everyone looked at me like I
was a bit of a freak, and it meant that I
was forced look for alternative ways of
being me. I was able to find that freedom
in the wild. The ‘wild’ is obviously quite
an expansive word, and it’s down to your
interpretation really. But that is, as you
very astutely said, is one of my big things
in life; trying to encourage youngsters,
families, individuals, couples to do
what they want to do, not what society
expects them to do and that’s what I’m
trying to share with this show. I’ve sort
of done bits of it over the years with the
expeditions I’ve been on. A lot of people
say, “why would you go and climb Mount
Everest?” “Why would you row across
an ocean?”. And the answer is because
you should try to enjoy each day, not just
sleepwalk through it.
With your tour, would you say there is
a sense of that we have to stop looking
at the actual destination and instead
enjoy ride a little bit more?
Yes, it is about enjoying the journey itself.
So many people sleepwalk through life.
It’s almost like it’s a trial and it doesn’t
have to be that way. Now obviously
people are struggling financially and there
are all sorts of reasons why people are
experiencing mental health problems
and many other things, but what I’ve
realised over the years is that human
nature is to aspire and to want more. So,
whether you want that job promotion,
or you want the bigger house, the better
car, or the newer phone. But actually, if
you simplify everything, then suddenly
those aspirations are all relative and it
means that to actually find that nirvana
of happiness becomes much easier to
attain. Sometimes the things that give
you great happiness are much easier
to actually find and hold on to. That’s
what I’ve discovered the wilderness and
the wild has done for me. To be in the
jungle in the trees, on a river, on the sea,
in the dessert. Away from the pressures
of social media and the excesses of the
internet, all those things. I find myself so
much more content and happy. I just had
a whole month in Antarctica for a new
show and it was revolutionary in terms
of not having any internet, email, any
contact. All I had was a satellite phone
to make a few calls to my family, and it
changed my whole psychology. I found
myself less anxious, happier, I chatted
more to people around me. I lived in
the now, rather than in someone else’s
little world. I think that’s the nuts and
bolts of what this show ‘Wild’ is going
to hopefully help people attain; not by
showing how climbing a mountain can
change your life, but just how in some
ways, changing your perspective can
do that. I hope the tour can be a bit
of a medicine for modern life that will
hopefully leave people smiling and feeling
uplifted.
HOME EXTENSIONS:
Where to Start?
With the hassle and costs that come with
moving house, it’s no surprise so many of
us choose to extend our homes to create
more space and add value too. But there’s
a lot to think about when you’re extending
your home. So we’ve asked the property
advice site HomeOwners Alliance (hoa.
org.uk) about some of the essential things
you need to ask yourself first.
1. HOW MUCH VALUE WILL MY
BUILDING PROJECT ADD?
Firstly, it’s a good idea to establish
whether your planned extension will add
value to your home. A good local estate
agent should be able to give you an
indication of how much your extension
would increase your property’s value by.
They will be able to say what houses like
yours locally have that puts them in the
higher price bracket, whether that’s an
extra bedroom, bathroom or something
different. This is important research and
may have a bearing on how much you’re
prepared to spend and what projects you
tackle first.
2. DO I NEED PLANNING
PERMISSION?
You can perform certain types of work
without needing to apply for planning
permission; these are called “permitted
development rights”. Whether or not
your home extension is covered under
permitted development will vary on a
number of factors such as whether your
house is detached, a semi-detached or
a terrace and the size of your proposed
extension. And there are other conditions
that must be met: for example, if the
extension is more than half the area of
land around the original house, you will
need planning permission. For more
information visit Permitted development:
guide for homeowners at hoa.org.uk.
3. DON’T FORGET BUILDING
REGULATIONS APPROVAL
Regardless of whether or not planning
permission is required, a house extension
will need to comply with building
regulations. Speak to your builder about
who will be responsible for submitting
a building control application. They
should then work with building control
officers in your local council to ensure
compliance. But remember ultimately it is
the homeowner’s responsibility to ensure
this has been done. So once the building
work is complete, you should obtain a
completion certificate. This confirms that
the building work complies with the local
authority regulatory standards. It is a
good idea to get this before handing over
final payment to the builder.
4. DESIGNING YOUR EXTENSION
There’s no law saying you need to use an
architect, even for large renovations and
builds. But it’s certainly easier to have
a professional draw up the designs and
using an architect will generally mean
you’ll get a better end result. Architect
fees can range from 3% to 15% of the
total build cost; the amount you’ll pay will
depend on various factors including your
location and the amount of involvement
you want your architect to have with your
project. So if you’re using an architect
you’ll need to factor these fees into your
budget. To search for architects in your
area visit hoa.org.uk/services/find-anarchitect-near-me/
You’ll likely need plans and technical
structural drawings if your extension
requires any structural changes. These
will be an important part of getting
planning permission, complying with
building regulations and for your builder
to follow. A structural engineer can
provide these. Shop around and speak to
a few structural engineers to get the best
price and service.
Ca’Pietra
6. FINDING THE RIGHT BUILDER
The key to any successful home
extension are professional, reliable
trusted tradespeople. When it comes
to getting the right builder, personal
recommendations from friends or family
members who have used the builders
is a good starting point, and also look
at online review sites when comparing
builders and other contractors.
Once you’ve narrowed down your search,
ask to visit one or two of the builders’
completed projects to ensure you’re
happy with the work and level of finish.
Bear in mind you may need to wait
several months to get the builder you
want. So start the search early.
7. GET QUOTES
The cost of a home extension will depend
on the type of extension, the size, the
structural work involved (will you need
steels?) and where you are undertaking
the project. According to Checkatrade, a
standard 20m² extension could typically
cost £36,000 (+VAT) to £52,000 (+VAT),
whereas a garage conversion typically
costs £7,500 (+VAT) -£20,000 (+VAT)
and a 30m² loft conversion could cost
£37,500 (+VAT) to £60,000 (+VAT).
However, whenever you are undertaking a
renovation project, it’s always a good idea
to shop around. We recommend getting
quotes from three different contractors
for the work. You’ll usually need to ask at
least five firms to get three quotes.
8. SETTING A BUDGET
When setting a budget for your job, start
by making a list of everything you would
like included. Compare your quotes
item by item and when pricing services
and materials always check the VAT is
included. We’d also recommend setting
aside around 10% of the total cost for
unexpected additional costs.
Where to splurge on your extension
We would recommend that if you can
afford it, you engage an architect for your
extension. You will pretty much always
end up with a better end product. They are
highly trained and especially good at seeing
the “big picture”. They make the best use
of the space you have, give interesting
designs, ensure the light is right, the feel is
good, and the house works.
Architects are usually good at ensuring the
work is professionally done. They are aware
of planning and permitted development
guidelines and will ensure the build meets
the requirements of building control and
that you have a structural engineer if you
need one. An architect can also help you
find the best builder, project manage the
whole works, and keep within budget.
The architect is the expert eyes and ears,
whose job it is to represent your interests
with builders and local authorities. They
could save you a lot of time and hassle.
How to save on your extension
An extension is big bucks. There’s no
getting around that. So take advantage
of sales to get what you want for the best
price. Don’t wait. This goes for everything
from tiles to sofas. With current supply
issues being experienced by many
companies, you’ll be pleased you ordered
early. And don’t forget to ask your builder
or architect if they can get you a trade
discount for anything you have said you
would source.
A lot of people choose to save money
on building projects by doing elements
themselves. For some people, knocking
down a false wall or destroying and
removing an old kitchen themselves will
save some money. At the other end of the
project, if you’re a dab hand at DIY then
you may decide to save by painting and
decorating the rooms yourself.
9. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Party Wall Agreements and your
neighbours
A party wall is the shared wall, usually
between a terrace or semi-detached
house, and divides the homes of two
separate owners. It also includes
garden walls built over a boundary and
excavations close to a neighbour’s
property (within three or six metres,
depending on the depth of the new
foundations). Party Wall Agreements
are most commonly needed for loft
conversions and extensions that need
the insertion of steel supports, a damp
proof course and/or digging of new
foundations.
Your home insurance cover
And before starting your project it’s
important that you contact your home
insurer to advise them about the works.
The extension will likely increase the
rebuild cost of your house. Insurers
take this into account when pricing
premiums. While building work is being
undertaken, it could put the property at
risk of damage. And if you don’t let your
insurer know and there’s a problem with
the property at some point, you may find
your policy is void.
You should also check that any
builder working on your property has
professional indemnity insurance to cover
the costs should something go wrong.
LIGHT IT UP
As well as being essential for utilising
the space, good lighting is key to
making a space inviting. You’ll need
a mix of safety lighting that covers
pathways and walls, and then some
softer light to pool on the table.
Rechargeable table lamps are a great
option, as are festoon lights. You can
string these on metal shepherds hooks or
even get a bar that clips to the table so
you can hang them along the length.
DINING OUT
There are a myriad of options for
seating, including rising tables to allow
you to transition from lounging to dining.
When you’re choosing your furniture,
make sure you go for one with a good
guarantee as you’ll want it to stand the
test of time.
Also think about how many seats you
will need - it’s better to go for an option
that suits you 95% of the time, with
options to supplement with additional
modular seating as and when required.
SOFT FURNISHINGS
Adding texture and softness really
transforms a space. You can use regular
cushions and blankets, just make sure
to bring them in at night.
Covering the floor with an outdoor rug
can really make the space feel complete.
Adding texture to
the table
with a
BEAUTIFUL
TABLEWARE
Vibrant salads, grilled meats and
delicious desserts all look even better
served in lovely ceramics - large serving
bowls and platters help to encourage
everyone to dig in and share.
FEEL THE HEAT
On cooler evenings, heat sources can
keep the fun going - patio heaters are
an efficient way to keep the cool air at
bay. Fire pits and bowls are great for
NOTES FROM THE
Garden
With the recent vegetable shortages in the
supermarkets, our regular contributor
Matt Biggs gives us an insight into how
we can start growing our own...
“You don’t need a silver fork to eat good food.”
PAUL PRUDHOMME
With supermarket shelves empty of certain items and predictions
of shortages to come it might be time to be a little, or a lot, self
sufficient and grow our own. You don’t have to have a lot of land;
a little ingenuity will give you options and the thrill of eating what
you have produced is considerably greater than that of paying for
it at the checkout!
A friend of mine was in India recently and saw a very ingenious
use of space – plastic water bottles halved horizontally, a few
holes in the bottom, compost and string to hang and hey presto;
a hanging herb container. Large bamboo sliced similarly for
herbs, half coconut shells strapped to trees for orchids, making
use of what is to hand is the most economic and environmentally
friendly way to go.
Hanging baskets for tumbler tomatoes and herbs, old dustbins
for early spuds, old metal buckets and jam pans, even car
tyres can be repurposed and used so with a little creativity you
have containers ready to go. The water bottles can be hung on
a frame, one above the other, which makes for a great space
saving feature, and brackets on walls can also be utilised.
Seeds are cheap and with a little research and a chat with other
gardeners you can choose the best options for your space. If
you are lucky enough to have a garden or allotment then the
options are endless, from ‘step over’ apples to a full sized tree,
and getting the family involved is great too so the kids learn
about where their food comes from – and how precious it is.
GARDENJobs
Mow your lawn weekly to
keep it healthy
Here are some of the top jobs to be getting on with in the
garden this month...
1. Watch out for late frosts. Protect
tender plants Frost can affect many
plants, and is particularly damaging
to tender new growth and blossom in
the spring. The risks of frost damage
can be reduced by taking some simple
steps to protect the plants in your
garden.
2. Earth up potatoes and promptly
plant any still remaining Potato plants
need ‘earthing up’ as they grow, to
protect early shoots from frost damage
and ensure the developing potatoes
aren’t exposed to light, which turns
them green and poisonous.
3. Plant out summer bedding at the
end of the month Bedding plants
Plant out summer bedding once the
risk of frost has passed
provide a temporary decorative
seasonal display for beds, borders,
containers and hanging baskets.
4. Water early and late to get the
most out of your water, recycle water
when possible Water is a limited and
valuable resource, but is also essential
for plant growth. To make the most of
water, collect what you can rather than
use tap water. Store and use it safely.
5. Regularly hoe off weeds Run a hoe
over a bed or between rows to kill
most weed seedlings. Choose a dry
day so seedlings dry out on the surface
rather than re-root into moist soil.
6. Open greenhouse vents and doors
on warm days Greenhouses can get
very hot very quickly and can easily kill
off fragile young plants.
7. Mow lawns weekly – but consider
leaving some areas uncut for wildlife A
good mowing regime is an important
part of maintaining a healthy lawn. The
cutting height and mowing frequency
will depend on the look you want to
achieve, whether it be a close-cut
‘classic’ lawn or longer-grassed wildlife
lawn.
8. Check for nesting birds before
clipping hedges Now is a good time
to clip hedges to maintain their shape
but be sure to check for nesting birds
before you start.
9. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps
of daffodils and other spring-flowering
bulbs Dig them up after flowering,
split into smaller groups and replant to
establish new colonies. New clumps
should settle in quickly and flower the
following year.
10. Watch out for viburnum beetle and
lily beetle grubs Viburnum beetle egg
hatch in early May. Check susceptible
plants frequently from spring onwards
so action can be taken before a
damaging population has developed.
Lily beetle and their grubs lay on the
underside of leaves so check daily
for any sign of them and remove
immediately.
FROM GOOD TO GREAT
WHAT MAKES GREAT CARE IN LATER LIFE
We explore the details of what makes for great care in later life...
As we age, our needs change, and we
require more specialized care to maintain
our quality of life. Great care in later life
is not only about meeting the physical
needs of older adults but also about
providing compassionate and respectful
care that promotes their overall wellbeing.
We explore the key elements that
make great care in later life, including
compassionate and respectful care, a
safe and comfortable living environment,
and activities that promote well-being
and independence.
Great care in later life should prioritize
treating older adults with dignity and
respect. This means showing empathy
towards their physical, emotional, and
social needs. Caregivers should take
the time to listen to their concerns and
preferences, and provide personalised
care that meets their cultural values.
For example, older adults may have
specific dietary requirements, or they
may prefer to receive care from someone
who speaks their native language. By
acknowledging these preferences,
caregivers can create a more positive
and supportive environment for older
adults. Furthermore, compassionate and
respectful care should extend beyond
meeting basic needs. Caregivers should
also prioritise social and emotional
support, recognising that loneliness and
isolation can have a significant impact
on older adults’ overall health and
well-being. This can involve providing
opportunities for social interaction, such
as group activities, or simply taking the
time to engage in conversation and build
relationships with older adults.
A safe and comfortable living
environment is essential for great care
in later life. This involves ensuring that
the living environment is clean, safe,
and accessible. Caregivers should
take steps to prevent falls and other
accidents, such as removing tripping
hazards and installing handrails. They
should also provide appropriate medical
equipment and assistive devices, such
as wheelchairs and walkers, to help older
adults maintain their independence.
In addition to meeting physical needs,
great care in later life should also
prioritise emotional comfort. This
can involve providing a warm and
welcoming environment, with comfortable
furnishings and decor that reflects the
personal preferences of older adults.
Caregivers should also take steps to
ensure that older adults feel secure and
supported, such as providing access
to emergency response systems and
ensuring that they have access to
assistance when needed.
Finally, great care in later life should
prioritise activities that promote wellbeing
and independence. This can
involve offering a range of social and
recreational activities, such as exercise
classes, art therapy, and music therapy.
These activities not only promote physical
health but also provide opportunities for
social interaction and emotional support.
In addition to structured activities,
caregivers should also encourage
older adults to pursue hobbies and
interests that they enjoy. This can involve
providing access to books, movies,
and other forms of entertainment, or
simply encouraging older adults to
explore new interests and hobbies. By
promoting independence and autonomy,
caregivers can help older adults maintain
a sense of purpose and fulfilment, even
as they age.
Great care in later life is about more than
just meeting physical needs. It involves
providing compassionate and respectful
care that prioritises the overall well-being
of older adults.
