Do No Harm
We provided
exactly what they
requested—much
needed primary care,
basic emergency and
Ob-Gyn furnishings
and supplies for the
11 health centers
and 8 health posts in
Cocapata, Bolivia
At Global Links we continually strive to Do No Harm, not simply because we
work in medical aid and this important tenet of medical ethics is one that will
ring familiar to healthcare professionals, but because we work to improve
health grounded by our core values of dignity and respect for all people,
respect for the environment and continuous learning and improvement.
We strive to do no harm to the environment, to the affected communities we
are serving, to their economies, to cultural norms and more. Not every project
which comes our way is appropriate to undertake at every given point in time,
and we evaluate carefully whether we can respond in a manner that stays true
to our ethics and the best use of resources, including the dollars entrusted to
our care by you to make a difference.
To our Global Links family of supporters and volunteers, you understand
that we are guided by our code of ethics and our core values, which at their
simplest are, “We trust those affected and we respect their requests,” and the
golden rule to, “Do unto others,” so we won’t provide medical materials that we
wouldn’t be proud to offer to our own families if they had the need. Thank you
for allowing us to steward your gifts, which make our work possible to help
meet the needs of our neighbors for a healthier, more sustainable, and more
equitable world. Your support allowed us to improve health for over
1.1 million people both locally and around the world in 2022—thank you!
& Project
Highlights
Global Links Achieved Energy Independence
In June 2022 we celebrated the
completion of Phase II of our Energy
Independence Project by flipping the
switch on our newly installed LED
lighting and motion sensor system.
The reduction in energy use resulting
from the replacement, coupled with
energy generated from the 10,000
square-foot solar array installed on
our headquarters as part of Phase
I, will allow Global Links to produce
100% of its own energy needs, with
the goal of achieving Net Zero.
International Medical Aid
Bolivia: Indigenous
Community Health and
Women’s Health
In addition to working with
indigenous communities in rural
regions of Bolivia to strengthen the
community healthcare system, we
collaborated to support menstrual
health education training for
healthcare professionals, menstrual
health workshops for young women+,
and provided 5,500 reusable Days for
Girls menstrual kits. These efforts to
support menstrual health reduce the
stigma that surrounds menstruation
and, among other benefits, allows
young people to stay in school.
Medical Backpacks
Deployed for Disaster
Recovery
We provided 251 Medical
Backpacks around the world,
some of which the Emergency
Operations Center for the Pan
American Health Organization/
World Health Organization
(PAHO/WHO) deployed in
response to the May 2022
flooding in Suriname, a country
Domestic Medical Aid
The Domestic Medical Aid and
Operations team work closely
together to ensure that our local
partners have the materials they
need to improve health for all. In
the fall of 2022, we partnered
with nonprofit Trying Together to
distribute disinfectant wipes to more
than 300 local child care facilities. We
converted a semi-truck full of surplus
into 9 months’ worth of disinfectant
wipes for nearly all of the childcare
and daycare providers in Allegheny
County, helping minimize illness and
germs in daycare centers throughout
the cold and flu season.
Medical Surplus Recovery
We rescue home medical equipment
such as manual wheelchairs,
rollators and shower benches, all of
which are critical to prevent falls,
support independence, and improve
quality of life for both the caregiver
and the family member in their care.
Many home healthcare products
are not covered by insurance, or are
out of financial reach for those who
cannot afford the copays associated
with purchasing them. We were
able to provide 706 pieces of rescued
home medical equipment to our
neighbors, including wheelchairs
prepped by our dedicated
“Wheelchair Wrangler” volunteers.
Community Engagement
& Volunteer Program
We appreciate the volunteers of ALL
abilities who donated 14,759 hours of
their time to sort and pack medical
supplies, Personal Care Kits, and more
to improve health. Throughout the
year 22 corporate volunteer teams
learned and laughed together to “pay
it forward” and team build at the same
time. And some of those corporate
teams also partnered with us to sponsor
programs like the Personal Care Kit
initiative, deepening their commitment
to improve health in the communities
where they live and work.
We Believe in Dignity, Independence, Mobility and Health for All
Global Links is a Pittsburgh-based non-profit dedicated to improving health in communities with need. Global Links
affirms our foundational commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. These important themes are at the forefront
of our minds and our work and are woven throughout all we do. Respect for all people and the environment guides our
mission. We recognize everyone has value and deserves to be included equitably. We recognize everyone is our neighbor
and we are dedicated to helping all people live with dignity, independence, mobility, and in good health. We will call out
inequities and injustice and work to lift up all.
International Medical Aid Program
Supports health improvement projects in communities
lacking resources. We collaborate with the Pan
American Health Organization/World Health
Organization, Ministries of Health, local health
leaders, and others to develop projects to improve
public health outcomes in vulnerable populations.
Our projects focus on three key areas: maternal/infant
health, strengthening public health systems, and
disaster recovery. Served annually in 2022:
1.1 million globally
Medical Surplus Recovery Program
Provides healthcare organizations, corporations,
universities and the community with a socially and
environmentally responsible alternative to discarding
surplus medical supplies and furnishings, a strategy
supporting the “Circular Economy,” and recovering an
average of 250 tons of high-quality surplus materials
in a typical year. Rescued in 2022: 228 tons
Domestic Medical Aid Program
Supports safety net organizations serving vulnerable
populations in Western PA and beyond to improve
the health, dignity, mobility, and independence of our
neighbors. We work with agencies serving seniors,
families, people with disabilities, homeless or other
sheltered populations, and immigrants/refugees to
provide medical supplies and equipment, mobility
aids, personal hygiene supplies, nebulizers through
our Breathe Hope Project and other key items.
Served annually in 2022: 4,095 locally
Community Engagement & Volunteer Program
Provides a supportive and educational environment
where hands-on or virtual service has a profound
impact on the lives of those in need. Volunteers of
all ages and abilities sort, assess, and prepare the
materials needed in our programs, turning our region’s
surplus into life-saving and life-improving donations.
Volunteer hours donated in 2022: 14,759
