York Label Group
reported by Greg Kishbaugh
Multi-Color Corp., Cincinnati, Ohio, will reportedly become
the nation’s largest label supplier, nearly doubling its size,
with an agreement to acquire 100 percent ownership in privately
held York Label Group, Omaha, Nebraska, for $356 million
in stock, cash and assumed debt.
The purchase, which is expected to close by early October,
will increase Multi-Color’s revenues from $338 million last year
to a projected $640 million, increase its printing plants from
17 to 29 and its global employment from 1,353 to 2,553.
York, which also has
a joint venture in
Chile, is owned by Diamond
Castle Holdings.
It had revenues
last year of $240 million.
York has 12 plants across the United States, Canada and
Chile, with approximately 1,200 employees.
Not only will Multi-Color now be the largest label company
in the United States but it is reportedly the fastest growing
globally, as well, with revenues more than tripling since the beginning
of 2008. Nigel Vinecombe, Multi-Color President and
Chief executive officer, will continue in those roles with the
yond, this segment will see the slowest increases due
to the maturity of products such as metal cans and
glass containers. On the other hand, above-average
demand growth is expected in reusable and degradable
packaging. In particular, the demand for degradable
packaging will continue to see double-digit
annual growth rates.
Gains in recycled-content packaging will be supported
by increased collection activity and processing
capacity, coupled with greater use of
recycled-content packaging by firms seeking to
demonstrate environmental responsibility and differentiate
their products. Demand for reusable packaging
will be boosted by an acceleration in global
manufacturing activity. Degradable packaging will
continue to see the fastest advances in demand, but
will only account for approximately 1 percent of the
overall green packaging market through 2015.
The Asia/Pacific region will see above-average gains
(7.2 percent from 2010 to 2015, to approximately
$79.1 billion) and will remain the largest regional market
in the world, due to its large food and beverage industries
(which represent the main green packaging
applications). Central and South America, Eastern Europe,
and the Africa/Mideast region will also experience
above-average growth, though advances in these
areas will stem from smaller bases (collectively, these
three regions only accounted for 12 percent of global
green packaging demand in 2010). Overall, some of
the fastest growth will be seen in Asia, specifically in
India, China, and Indonesia. Other developing countries
such as Russia,Turkey, Brazil, and Mexico are also
expected to see healthy gains.
The United States, which accounted for 23 percent of
global sales in 2010, is the largest national green packaging
market in the world by a wide margin. Other
large, generally mature markets include Japan and Germany.
While Japan will remain one of the largest markets
in the world, the country is forecast to see the
slowest growth rate through 2015. Nonetheless, good
opportunities will still be found in developed countries, especially
for degradable packaging products.
The difference between F&K and other presses is the
amount of waste we don’t generate during set-ups.
We offer about 45 feet of run-out per set-up
— vs —
What did you say you’re wasting now?
Establishing press settings & registration on a conventional flexo
press is done while running. This wastes substrate, ink, energy and,
just as importantly, time. Given that each and every job change
requires
a set-up, multiply that waste by how many changes you
make
in a day, in a week, in a year and the losses are staggering.
F&K flexo presses cut that waste. In fact with our smart GPS
system of setting register and impression settings before the
cylinders
are even put on the press, waste can be cut by 90% or more.
Our presses are also designed for modern plants where space is at
a premium and efficiency is a primary concern. For example, our
face-to-face design option enables both the unwind & rewind to be accessed and monitored from one central position. The highly efficient
web path also minimizes the height requirement.
Exceptional performance and features
for a remarkably reasonable price.
Every aspect of an F&K press is state-of-the-art, except the
price. We’ve addressed operator and maintenance accessibility, operate at high speeds and work
with a wide range of substrates to give you more flexibility and maximimum potential. It’s premium
F&K performance and quality at a highly competitive price.
Talk F&K with your Bobst representative and learn more about staying competitive by
reducing waste, maximizing run-time and using technology to stay ahead.
ICE Europe Will Be Largest
Ever Seeing 20 Percent Growth
The largest ICE Europe to date will open its doors
from November 8-10, at its new venue, the Munich
Trade Fair Centre, in Munich, Germany.A total of 370
exhibitors from 21 countries have already booked
stands at the exhibition. With a total exhibition space
of 9,500 square meters net, ICE Europe 2011 has
grown by some 20 percent compared with the exhibition
space at its old venue, Munich’s M.O.C. More
than half of the exhibitors, 58 percent, are German
companies. The second largest exhibitor country is
Italy, followed by Great Britain, Switzerland, the United
States, the Netherlands and France.
Key subjects at this year’s exhibition will be new
materials conversion, energy efficient production and
enhanced process control. Many of the exhibits showcased
at ICE Europe 2011 will focus on material reduction,
process control, waste reduction, improved
production processes with reduced energy consumption
and new materials from renewable resources.
Some of these topics will also be the subject of a
conference on “Sustainability in packaging —
processes and materials.”
Saudi Packaging Industry
Forecast To Grow By 25 Percent
Currently valued at $4.4 billion, forecasters are predicting
the Saudi packaging industry will grow by
more than $1 billion in the next four years. The growth
will largely be driven by a rise in personal income and
an increase in the number of working women, both of
which are bringing about a change in consumer
lifestyle. With an increase in consumer product marketing
by the brand owners, the largest rises are expected
to be seen in the food and beverage sectors.
Saudi Arabia accounts for 60 percent of the food
and beverages consumed in the Gulf region, a figure
that seems sure to increase in view of the country’s
policy of self-sufficient food production. At present,
agriculture represents just three percent of GDP, but
this figure will grow, along with the capacity for food
processing and packaging. The forward situation,
however, will be affected if the Saudi government
continues to maintain its strict control of international
involvement within the country.
Private consumption expenditure (defined as the
purchase of goods and services for consumption by
domestic private households) shows an annual
growth rate of eight percent, well ahead of the global
average of 6.4 percent. Assuming this continues, the
consumption of packaging material will increase at a
similar rate.
International Paper Acquires
Temple-Inland For $4.3 Billion
International Paper has ended a takeover battle that
has lasted more than three months by announcing
that it has reached a “definitive merger agreement” to
acquire Temple-Inland for $32 a share plus the assumption
of $600 million in debt.
The boards of both companies came to an agreement
after International Paper raised its previous,
$30.60 per share offer, from back in early June. The
new offer was about 5 percent higher to $32 a share,
which implies a $3.7 billion cash payment plus the
assumption of $600 million in debt, taking the total
value of the transaction to $4.3 billion.
Reaching an agreement was taken as a step forward
by the market as shares in both companies soared.
Hostilities emerged after initial negotiations broke
down, with Temple-Inland’s board considering the
offer too low and International Paper taking its bid
directly to share-holders.
Temple-Inland’s board approved a shareholder
rights plan or a so-called poison pill takeover defense
prohibiting any person or group from owning more
than 10 percent of the company.
The merger will yield expected synergies of about
$300 million a year within 24 months of closing,“de-
rived primarily from the areas of operations, freight,
logistics, selling expense and overhead.”
Media reports have suggested that the deal could
raise International Paper’s share of the corrugatedpackaging
market to about 37 percent, from the current
27 percent.
Study: Format Switches To Drive
22 Percent Flexibles Growth By 2016
Sales for the global flexible packaging market are
predicted to grow by 22 percent to more than $70
billion in the next five years, driven by Asian
growth and brands moving their products out of
other formats.
A new study from research body Pira claims that
flexible formats — such as the pouches recently
adopted by UK baby food brand Ella’s Kitchen —
will benefit from replacing formats such as metal
cans, glass and plastic bottles and liquid cartons.
Asia is expected to be the biggest geographical
growth market, while western Europe and north
America are likely to show only modest growth,
Pira’s report, The Future of Global Flexible Packaging
to 2016, predicts.
Total annual tonnage is expected to rise from 18.l
million tons in 2011 to 22.5 million tons in 2016, according
to the report.
Sales, meanwhile, will hit $71.6 billion by 2016
compared to $58.3 billion this year, the report predicts.
Elsewhere, the report says that barrier flexible
packaging will play an important role in the future
growth of the flexibles market as the major retail
chains demand greater product protection and
longer shelf life.
As a result, Pira expects higher-barrier plastics such
as BOPET, EVOH and PA, to show the highest growth
rates over the forecast period.
Geographically, growth in the mature western European
and north American markets is expected to
be modest, while the engines of expansion for flexibles
are expected to be the world’s developing
economies.
Asia, which represents 29.1 percent of global flexibles
consumption, is expected to lead the field with
annual growth of 7.9 percent.
India and China alone are expected to account for
more than two-fifths of all growth in the global market
in the coming five years.
Atlas To Provide Slitter
PRPflexo Introduces Thermal
ExSpect ® Printing Plates
PRPflexo a prepress services and flexographic
printing plate provider based in Indianapolis, Indiana,
has developed its flat-top-dot plate technology to
work with thermally produced plates.
PRPflexo first introduced its flat-top dot plate technology
in 2004.
“We recognized the benefits of thermal processing
early on, with no solvent or drying requirements, it
became the choice of many printers seeking faster
production times and ‘greener” processing,’ said Chris
Green, General Manager. “Unfortunately, the print
quality was never able to compete with flat-top dot
plate technology, so printers had to decide between
print quality and overall speed, until now. In trials to
date we have seen thermally processed flat-top dot
results rival solvent produced plates.”
Thermal ExSpect ® printing plates are available in
both digital and analog formats of any thermally
processed materials.“We never found it to be a good
business practice to impose restrictions on our customers,”
said Green. “Many printers we work with
have a preference for certain types of photopolymer
they feel works well with the substrates they use, so
by developing a process internally that works with
any sheet material, they can continue to use what
works best for them.” explained Green.
Stora Enso Inaugurates
New Recycling Process In Barcelona
Stora Enso’s Barcelona, Spain, mill celebrated the inauguration
of its new, recycling process on September
6th. The mill processes used beverage cartons
from several European countries.
Stora Enso’s Barcelona mill receives used milk and
juice cartons from Spain, France, Portugal and the
UK.The new recycling process enables full recovery
of all the materials used in the beverage cartons, including
the fiber, plastic and aluminum.
“The innovation is that we are now able to recycle all
the constituent parts of beverage cartons,” said Håkan
Molden,VP Carton Board at Stora Enso Packaging.
The recovered fiber is used for the production of
white lined chipboard at Stora Enso’s Barcelona Mill.
The process is based on pyrolysis, i.e. heating up the
material in the absence of oxygen. The process was
refined in collaboration by Stora Enso’s Barcelona
mill and Alucha Recycling Technologies. The innovation
was selected as a winner of the 2010 ‘Best of the
Best’ LIFE Environment Projects award, granted by
the European Union to recognize projects that have a
positive impact on the environment.
US Demand For Labels
To Reach $20 Billion In 2015
U.S. label shipments are forecast to rise 4.8 percent
annually to $20 billion in 2015, according to Labels,a
new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based
industry research firm.
The pressure sensitive segment will continue to
dominate output, accounting for more than 70 percent
of the total. Although pressure sensitive labels
will expand at a healthy rate, they will continue to
face growing competition from alternative labeling
methods such as stretch sleeve, heat-shrink and inmold
labels. Among these, heat-shrink labels are projected
to advance at the fastest rate through 2015,
with gains attributable to their ability to form-fit contoured
containers, providing 360-degree graphics and
a broad promotional area which enable consumer
products to stand out on crowded store shelves.
Paper Holds Strong
Paper will remain by far the leading stock material
in the label industry for the foreseeable future. However,
it will continue to lose market share to plastic,
which will account for more than one-quarter of
label shipments in 2015. Plastic stock materials will
gain popularity due to their aesthetic and performance
advantages over paper, as well as a broad shift
in favor of plastic packaging. Moreover, plastic is
heavily utilized in pressure sensitive, heat-shrink,
stretch sleeve, in-mold and thermal transfer labels,
each of which is expected to grow at a healthy rate.
Among plastic label resins, polypropylene and
polyvinyl chloride are widely used, although the latter
will lose out to other plastic substrates with
lower perceived environmental and health risks. In
particular, trends favoring more environmentally
friendly substrates will propel gains for polylactic
acid, albeit from a very small base.
Primary packaging represents the leading application
for labels in the U.S. market. Label demand in
this sector will be driven by a shift in product mix favoring
higher-value label types (including large, fullbody
labels, plastic labels and those featuring
higher-end inks and printing technologies), as labels
play a crucial role in the building of brand identity in
an intensely competitive consumer product marketplace.
However, the secondary packaging and mailing
and shipping segments will achieve more rapid demand
gains. In secondary labeling, advances will be
supported by the penetration of barcoding labels in
the transportation and distribution sector, along with
the significant potential for smart labeling markets
such as food safety applications.
