FROM THE MANAGER
IAN EVATT
GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO THE UNIVERSITY
OF BOLTON STADIUM FOR THE FIRST LEG OF OUR SKY BET
LEAGUE ONE PLAY-OFF SEMI-FINAL AGAINST BARNSLEY.
First of all, I’d like to congratulate
Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich
Town on their promotion to the
Championship. Over the course
of the season, they were worthy
champions and runners-up
respectively during what has been
a very competitive campaign in
the division.
For us, and today’s opponents,
Barnsley, alongside the other two
semi-finalists, Sheffield Wednesday
and Peterborough United, the
battle is now on to find out who will
join them next season.
A warm welcome to Michael Duff,
his staff, players and those who
have travelled over from South
Yorkshire.
Barnsley have been another good,
strong side in League One this
season and have pushed and
fought really hard to make an
immediate return to the second
tier.
Having secured our place in these
play-offs with a game to spare it
was important that we ended the
regular season at Bristol Rovers in
a positive manner. That, we did. It
was crucial that we won to carry
the momentum though.
We are coming to the boil just
at the right time. We’ve got key
players returning from injury, which
makes a massive difference to us,
and we managed to rest some
bodies on Sunday.
We are obviously delighted to
have our captain, Rico, back.
His presence on the pitch is so
important to how we play and his
leadership skills are second to
none.
Gethin had a slight hamstring issue
and hopefully he will have reacted
well to the treatment and if he’s not
back today then hopefully he will
be involved at Oakwell.
There is no doubt about it that
we are excited going into the
game and we are going to give
everything we have to see how far
it takes us.
Having lost just the once in the
past ten games, we are in a fine
vein of form and we will carry this
confidence into today’s game.
I’ve always said I’ve got a massive
belief in the squad and they’re
all capable of stepping up to the
plate. They did that at the Memorial
Ground and got us the win to set
us up nicely for today.
You, our fans, have been by
our side all season and nothing
pleases me more than seeing you
all smile. We appreciate everything
you give for us and we will always
put in the hard work.
You have travelled far and wide to
follow us this season and the lads
feed off the noise and atmosphere
you make here at the UniBol and
on our travels.
Another push today and one on
Friday night and hopefully we will
have done enough.
Enjoy the game and see you at
Oakwell
THE BOARDROOM NEIL HART
GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLTON
STADIUM FOR THE FINAL FIXTURE HERE THIS SEASON.
The response for tickets for the
game has again been outstanding
and to see the ground full will be
a magnificent sight and a fitting
reward for Ian and his team as
they look to advance through the
play-offs and further extend a
superb season.
Your backing has played a big part
in that and we thank you for your
on-going support.
This week we launched the
Wanderers Bond, which provides
another opportunity for supporters
to play an active role in the future
of the club.
The Bond offers supporters the
opportunity to make an investment
in the club at a starting level of
£500.
That investment would effectively
be a loan over a five-year period,
with a fixed rate of interest over
the term with the amount invested
repayable to the Bondholder after
five years with the following key
terms.
• 8.5% interest per annum
payable in cash on the anniversary
of the Bond
• 10% Championship Bonus
payable upon the Club competing
in the EFL Championship from the
24/25 season (either via promotion
from League One or retaining their
Championship status)
• ISA Eligible for tax-free returns
through an Innovative Finance ISA
• Minimum investment £500
and in increments of £500 (no
maximum investment)
Any funds raised through the
initiative – from supporters and
other interested parties – will
go hand-in-hand with further
investment from the club’s current
investors and owners and will be
utilised in two ways.
That will be for sporting
enhancements, including player
recruitment, training facilities and
advanced sports science, and to
improve club infrastructure in areas
such as the Fan Zone, the ticket
office and club shop, concourses,
hospitality and for improving
connectivity at the stadium, which
is long overdue.
Funding is required for the club to
try and achieve its aim of reaching
the Championship and, at the least,
stabilising there.
And while the Wanderers Bond
can’t and won’t be for every
supporter, we hope it does offer
some a new and exciting way to
further connect with the club and
play an invested part in its future.
For more information on the
Wanderers Bond, and to receive
priority investment access and
the chance to pre-register for the
scheme, please visit www.tifosy.
com/bwfc.
These are exciting times for
Wanderers and among the
improvements being made over
the summer will be a £500,000
refurbishment of our hospitality
suites.
We were delighted to launch our
Club Bolton hospitality packages
earlier this month, with a new
hospitality pricing structure in place
for the 2023/24 season.
Discounted rates on what will be
the standard seasonal prices are
available through a Priority Access
offer, which closes at 5pm, Friday
2nd June, so please visit the club
website to see the different ways
you can enjoy watching Wanderers
next season.
We have also welcomed a new
domestic broadcast deal with Sky
Sports, which will run for five years
from 2024/25.
That will increase revenues,
exposure and commercial
opportunities for the club and will
also mean the opportunity to watch
more live games for those not
attending matches.
We believe it’s an excellent deal
with a highly credible partner in
Sky which will have big benefits
for Wanderers in the future –
particularly if we achieve our aim
of reaching the Championship at
some stage.
In the shorter term, we are excited
about the launch of our own
new media channels with a new
website, app and streaming service
coming next season.
Back on the football front, we
were delighted to see Ian sign a
new long-term contract with the
club as he looks to continue the
journey, he, Sharon and the Board,
are leading Wanderers on and
which continues with this play-off
campaign.
We bring the curtain down on the
season here this afternoon but
hope it still has two more games to
go, while the party doesn’t stop in
the stadium with the first two dates
of a worldwide tour from Pink! on
7 and 8 June getting ever closer.
There will be two more full houses
here for that, with hospitality
packages still available.
Enjoy today and thanks again for
your support.
IAN
EVATT
12 | The Wanderer 01204 328 888

ONE PROMOTION ACHIEVED, A TOP-SIX FINISH SECURED IN LEAGUE
ONE AND A FIRST KNOCK-OUT TROPHY WON FOR 34 YEARS. BUT – AS
WANDERERS USED TO SAY PRE-MATCH – FOR MANAGER IAN EVATT
‘THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING’.
In less than three years as boss,
Evatt has taken the Whites from
the struggles of League Two
to a shot at promotion to the
Championship via a cup success
at Wembley.
And the next leg of that journey
comes today in Evatt’s first home
game since signing a new longterm
contract – a decision he
described as one of the easiest
he’s made since being handed
the reigns following successive
relegations for the Whites in a
pivotal summer of 2020.
“We spoke at great length about
our aims and ambitions when
I first joined and they haven’t
been achieved yet and they
haven’t changed,” said Evatt, who
describes an initial 30-minute
conversation with Chairman Sharon
Brittan as the clincher in his taking
on the task of reviving Wanderers’
fortunes in tandem with the club’s
ownership group.
“We’re on a journey. I really enjoy
working with the people I’m
working with and the group of
investors, Sharon and the Board,
who are all brilliant people. We
have a fantastic relationship to
carry this club forward with. That’s
why I committed my future here.
“We know what we’ve got here
and we’re nowhere near where
we want to be. We’ve kind of only
just begun. We’re just scratching
the surface now and there’s huge
amounts of progression to come.”
It hasn’t always been plain-sailing,
with Evatt’s first few months
following his arrival from Barrow
– following another promotion
success – a testing time as he
re-built the team and fostered a
winning habit.
“We’ve had some rough times
during my three years. I’ve always
felt supported and never felt
anything different to that,” he
admitted.
Wanderers have barely looked
back, though, since a superb run
www.bwfc.co.uk
The Wanderer | 13

of results in the second half of the
2020/21 season sparked a rapid
rise up the league ladder to their
current position, gaining Evatt
admirers along the way - but not
itchy feet.
“I’ve never thought about going
anywhere else,” added the 41-yearold,
who has now signed up until
June, 2026. “My job is here. I love
my job and I love working for the
people I work for.
“I was very relaxed about the
situation. Obviously, I only had
a year to run (on his existing
contract), so, as always with myself,
Sharon and the Board, there was
just an open conversation and
things happened very quickly
because we’re all happy with how
the journey is going and we all
want to continue it together.
“I have a huge amount of belief,
in Sharon, this journey and this
football club and that will continue.”
Timing, says Evatt, was also key,
with the former QPR, Blackpool
and Chesterfield defender putting
pen to paper before Wanderers’
short-term future is decided via a
play-off campaign which starts with
today’s semi-final home leg and
continues at Barnsley next Friday
night.
“I think it was a really important
statement from both parties to
show a commitment towards
each other. Regardless of how
these play-offs end, the journey
continues and that’s the most
important thing,” Evatt said.
“We all want promotion and we’re
all going to do our extreme best
to get promoted, but win, lose or
draw, the journey continues and
we progress on that upward curve.”
Progress is the name of the game
and having taken Wanderers to
ninth place back in League One
last term, Evatt’s men have moved
another major step forward this
season to finish fifth and keep alive
the prospect of a Wembley return
and possible promotion, a month
on from their epic victory in the
Papa Johns Trophy.
14 | The Wanderer 01204 328 888

WE ALL WANT
PROMOTION AND
WE’RE ALL GOING
TO DO OUR
EXTREME BEST TO
GET PROMOTED,
BUT WIN, LOSE
OR DRAW,
THE JOURNEY
CONTINUES AND
WE PROGRESS ON
THAT UPWARD
CURVE.
“I think it’s been good. We’ve
progressed again. We won the
Papa Johns which was huge for us
and a first trophy in a number of
years and now we’re in the playoffs,”
added the boss.
“We’re always looking to be better.
There are points out there we’ve
left behind, particularly against
the bottom six, which probably
could have seen us challenge for
automatic promotion.
“A lot of clubs could probably say
that, but from where we’ve come
from, almost not existing three or
four years ago, to where we are
today is huge progression and
we’re hungry for more.”
Feeding that appetite for now
means trying to overcome a
Barnsley side which finished the
regular season one place above
the Whites in a fiercely contested
top six, while Sheffield Wednesday
and Peterborough United go headto-head
in the other semi-final with
a place in the final at Wembley on
29 May at stake.
“It’s going to be a high-quality playoff
campaign,” predicted Evatt.
“I think all four teams will fancy
their chances. I think it’s been a
brilliant race. To have 77 points
for the last play-off place (the
highest – bar last season – since
2010) shows the quality at the top
end of this league. There are four
excellent teams and we will give it
our best shot.
“Ours is a really tough game.
Michael (Duff) has done an
incredible job at Barnsley. I think
it will be a close game in both
legs and we’ll see who can edge
us. Hopefully it will be us. We’re
in good form. We are carrying
momentum and we have full belief
we can go all the way.”
With two honours already on his
CV, Evatt has already left a mark
at Wanderers. But with the ink just
dry on his new deal, he’s not for
stopping yet. Now is not the time
for ‘pats on the back’, although
promotion might just change that
for a while.
“It would mean the world,” Evatt
said. “I think I would become the
first Bolton manager to manage the
club in three divisions and I like to
set myself goals and targets.
“I think we’ve achieved good
things (this season). I think they will
be great if we get promoted. We’ll
keep our heads in the game and
see where it takes us.”
MARLAND’S
MUSINGS
The Wanderers
today take part
in their 19th playoff
game since
1987 when they
were introduced
as an end of
season promotion
competition.
In that first season in 1987 the
competition included a team from
the division above to give them
the opportunity to avoid being
relegated. Bolton had finished
fourth from bottom of Division
Three (League One today) and
faced Aldershot, who had finished
sixth in Division Four, in the semifinal
over two legs.
Aldershot won the home leg 1-0
and the Wanderers led 2-1 after
90 minutes, thanks to two Tony
Caldwell goals, to take the game
into extra time. Unfortunately, the
visitors found another goal to win
3-2 on aggregate and send the
Wanderers into the bottom League
for the first time in their history.
Aldershot then defeated Wolves
over two legs to secure promotion.
In 1990 Bolton succumbed to Notts
County in the semi-final by a 3-1
aggregate for promotion to what
is now the Championship after
ending the season in 6th spot.
Bolton’s first play-off win didn’t
come until 1991 when a Tony
Wembley Tranmere Rovers won
promotion thanks to an extra-time
goal from substitute Chris Malkin.
Success finally came in the playoffs
in 1995. In a battle of the
Wanderers for promotion to reach
the Premier League it was Wolves
who held the advantage after a 2-1
win at Molineux. In a night of high
drama at Burnden Park it was the
Wanderers from Bolton that won
through to Wembley after extratime
thanks to two goals from John
McGinlay.
In Bolton’s first play-off final they
won through by 4-3 after extra
time against Reading in a never
to be forgotten game that saw
them two goals behind at half time.
League, firstly in 1999, Ipswich
Town were defeated at the
Reebok Stadium thanks to a
Michael Johansen goal. Despite
a 4-3 defeat in the second leg at
Portman Road Wanderers went
through to Wembley on away
goals. In the final Watford ran out
2-0 winners.
In 2000, it was Ipswich Town again
that stood between Bolton and
a second visit to Wembley that
season, having already played
in the FA Cup semi-finals. After a
2-2 draw at the Reebok Stadium,
Ipswich won the second leg
5-3 after extra time with Bolton
being reduced to nine men and
the home side awarded three
penalties.
The last play-off competition that
the Club participated in was in
2001. West Bromwich Albion were
dispatched on a 5-2 aggregate in
the semi’s and in the final Preston
North End couldn’t prevent Bolton
reaching the Premier League with
a 3-0 success at Cardiff. (pictured)
2022/23 SEASON
IN REVIEW
IT’S ALREADY BEEN AN EXCELLENT SEASON FOR WANDERERS –
AND ONE THAT COULD GET EVEN BETTER YET.
The Whites kick off their playoff
challenge on the back of a
campaign which has seen them
secure a top-six finish – the
Whites’ highest league placing
since 2019 – and win the Papa
Johns Trophy.
The home leg of the League One
play-off semi-finals will be the 58th
game of a season that started way
back in the sunshine at Ipswich
Town in August when an Aaron
Morley penalty got the first point
on the board.
A Kyle Dempsey double underlined
the first win over Wycombe
Wanderers and Ian Evatt’s men
were unbeaten in their first five
games – which included a 5-1
Carabao Cup win over Salford.
A potential run in the competition
was ended by Aston Villa in front
of the Sky Sports cameras when
Dion Charles opened his account
en route to becoming the first
Wanderers’ player in 22 years to
score 20 times in a season.
But after their first two league
18 | The Wanderer 01204 328 888

losses, Wanderers kicked off a
winning streak that included the
start of what would be an epic
run in the Trophy as Crewe were
beaten 4-1 in the opening group
game.
In the league, Kieran Lee, George
Johnston, Gethin Jones and Jon
Dadi Bodvarsson all weighed in
with their opening league goals as
Wanderers secured a top-six spot
they would barely relinquish for the
remainder of the season.
Conor Bradley had announced
himself as a genuine loan star with
a flurry of early goals as he went
on to win multiple Player of the
Season awards.
And after booking their progress
through to the knock-out rounds of
the Trophy, Wanderers produced
late drama to pick up important
wins over Accrington Stanley and
Burton Albion in late October.
Evatt’s men were at it again with a
dramatic comeback at Fleetwood
and Wanderers then went into
Christmas with momentum behind
them and a place in the quarterfinals
of the Trophy to look forward
to.
Goals from Charles, Bodvarsson
and a classic Dempsey effort made
it a happy New Year at Barnsley
and with Wanderers knocking
Portsmouth out of the Trophy to
reach the last four, the Whites
were on a run of just one loss in 14
games.
That peaked with remarkable
back-to-back 5-0 wins over
Peterborough United and MK Dons
as Wanderers kept their play-off
push in top gear.
The victory at Peterborough could
not have been better timed as
Wanderers marked their 5,000th
league fixture in style as captain
Ricardo Almeida Santos scored
his first goals for the club and
Charles claimed a first hat-trick
for the Whites in nine years inside
the space of an incredible nine
minutes.
MK Dons then suffered a repeat
beating as Santos scored again as
one of five ‘defenders’ who made
up the scoreline as Eoin Toal, Luke
Mbete, Jones and Randell Williams
all hit the target.
Port Vale were beaten in the next
home game too and although
league wins then briefly dried up,
there was no stopping Wanderers
in their march to Wembley.
Accrington stood in their way but
on a tense night at the Wham
The Wanderer | 19

Stadium, the Whites held their
nerve to book their place in the
final with late goals from Elias
Kachunga and goal-of-the-season
winner Morley.
And what a day at Wembley it
was as Sunday, 2 April became a
date that will forever be fixed in
Wanderers’ history.
Plymouth Argyle were blown away
in a 4-0 win as Dempsey, Charles,
Kachunga and Jones got the goals
which saw Evatt’s modern-day
heroes lift the club’s first cup in 34
years in front of 35,000 jubilant
Wanderers’ fans.
There wasn’t much time to
celebrate with a play-off place still
to aim for and the Whites made
sure they kept their eye on the ball
with a magical month that brought
four more wins and a draw.
Wanderers won at Exeter and
Oxford – where Charles made
it 20 goals for the season – as
James Trafford and his defensive
colleagues kept racking up the
clean sheets.
Vic Adeboyejo, Declan John and
Josh Sheehan also got important
20 | The Wanderer 01204 328 888

goals to keep adding to the points’
tally.
And even though there was a
late blip at home to Accrington,
Wanderers displayed a typical
show of character to immediately
bounce back and beat Fleetwood
Town in their final regular home
game to guarantee a play-off
place on another big day at the
University of Bolton Stadium.
With fifth place then assured on
the final day, Wanderers now
face Barnsley over two legs for a
place in the play-off final back at
Wembley.
Work still to do, but so far in
2022/23 a job very well done.
Wanderers booked their play-off place
with a game to spare thanks to a
polished victory over Fleetwood Town.
Ian Evatt’s men impressively held their
nerve to bounce back from a first loss in
eight games against Accrington Stanley
which had left them with work to do.
And with a 14th home win of the season
wrapped up with an own-goal and Kyle
Dempsey’s strike against his former club,
news of Peterborough’s dropped points
against Bristol Rovers meant Wanderers
were assured of a top-six spot.
Evatt made four changes to his starting
line-up as the Whites looked to get over
the line.
And one of those returning played a
key part in the opening goal as Elias
Kachunga’s presence from a Randell
Williams’ corner forced Town defender
Precious Omochere to deflect the ball
into his own net with 18 minutes gone.
Wanderers’ cause was then helped when
Fleetwood forward Jayden Stockley was
sent off for an off-the-ball incident after
an hour.
The Whites’ piled on the pressure in
search of a second goal to make the
points safe as they peppered the visitors’
goal.
And the breakthrough came 12 minutes
from time when the outstanding Dempsey
pounced on a loose ball in the six-yard
box to drill home his sixth goal of the
season and book another big home date
in the first leg of the play-off semi-finals.
CONOR BRADLEY HAS SECURED HIS NAME IN WANDERERS’ HISTORY
BY BEING NAMED AS THE WHITES’ PLAYER OF THE SEASON.
Bradley has enjoyed an
outstanding season on loan
from Liverpool, making over 50
appearances for Ian Evatt’s side
in helping them reach the League
One play-offs and win the Papa
Johns Trophy.
The Northern Ireland international
was selected by the Wanderers’
fans as the club’s official Player of
the Season.
And his performances in the right
wing-back role, which have also
brought the 19-year-old seven
goals so far this season, also
earned him the vote as the Players’
Player of the Season and a share
of the Young Player of the Season
award with goalkeeper James
Trafford.
“It’s really nice to be voted for
by your team-mates, as they’re
the ones you’re with every single
day and they see the hard work
you put in, and also to be chosen
by the fans. Nothing would be
possible without them,” said
Bradley.
“I’ve just tried to give 100 per cent
every time I’ve gone out on the
pitch. I feel like I’ve done that and
it’s terrific to get these awards.
“It’s been a fantastic year and one
I’ve really enjoyed. It’s gone ever
better than I expected and to win
these awards is very special. I’m
thankful to everyone at the club for
the support they’ve given me.
“There are some massive names
on the (Player of the Season)
trophy so it’s an honour to win it.”
Bradley picked up his silverware at
the club’s 2022/23 End of Season
Awards, sponsored by Franking
Sense.
Almost 500 supporters, guests
and sponsors enjoyed a glittering
night in the Premier Suite at the
University of Bolton Stadium.
Dion Charles received the award
as top scorer for his 20 goals for
the Whites, while Aaron Morley
collected the prize – voted for
by supporters – for goal of the
season for his stunning free-kick at
Charlton Athletic.
Boss Evatt and his staff and firstteam
squad were in attendance
and shared the Performance
of the Season Award for their
Wembley win over Plymouth in the
Papa Johns Trophy, while Gethin
Jones was named as Community
BARNSLEY FC
STADIUM: Oakwell CAPACITY: 23,287
NICKNAME: The Tykes/The Reds FOUNDED: 1887
Barnsley head into the play-offs
after finishing fourth in the League
One table with 86 points – their
second highest return in a single
season.
Today’s semi-final, first-leg
meeting with Wanderers means a
fourth fixture between the sides
this season after two games in
League One and a first-round FA
Cup tie at the University of Bolton
Stadium.
The Reds advanced that day
with a 2-1 win – a fortnight after a
goalless draw at the UniBol in the
league fixture.
However, Wanderers made sure
it would be a win apiece with an
emphatic 3-0 victory at Oakwell
to kick off the New Year thanks to
goals from Dion Charles, Jon Dadi
Bodvarsson and Kyle Dempsey
following the dismissal of Barnsley
defender Mads Andersen.
MANAGER – Michael Duff
The 45-year-old is nearing the end
of his first season in charge as he
looks to lead Barnsley back to the
Championship at the first attempt.
Duff joined the Tykes after a
successful first managerial job at
former club Cheltenham Town,
where he led the Robins to
promotion – along with Wanderers
– as League Two champions in
2021.
He then secured Town’s highest
league finish – 15th in 2022 –
before leaving to join Barnsley.
A former Northern Ireland
international, Duff enjoyed
a prodigious playing career
with Cheltenham and Burnley,
spending more than decade at
Turf Moor where the defender
shared in two promotion wins from
the Championship.
Starting his coaching career with
the Clarets, Duff has tapped into
his Burnley connections with
three former or current Burnley
players on the Barnsley books
in midfielders Adam Phillips
and Josh Benson and on-loan
defender Bobby Thomas.
[ LAST FIVE SEASONS ]
SPINE OF THE TEAM:
GOALKEEPER – Barnsley have
shared the goalkeeping duties this
term with Bradley Collins holding
down the number-one jersey
before January loan signing took
over duties in February following
his arrival from Luton Town.
DEFENDER – Central defender
Liam Kitching, 23, missed only one
game during the regular League
One season after picking up a
one-match ban for a dismissal at
Cambridge last September.
MIDFIELDER – Former Liverpool
youngster Herbie Kane, 24, has
played on loan at Doncaster
Rovers, Hull City and Oxford
United, but looks to have found
his home in the middle of
Barnsley’s midfield as a regular in
the Tykes’ play-off push.
STRIKERS – Barnsley’s front line
has been spearheaded by James
Norwood and Devante Cole, with
the pair sharing 26 League One
goals between them. Cole, 27, son
of former England international
Andy, has 15 of them with the
experienced Norwood, 32, is in
double figures for the first time
since scoring 11 league goals for
Ipswich in 2019/20.
AND DID THOSE FEET
A REMINDER OF THE ANNUAL
SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE
AND THANKSGIVING
Monday 15th May 6.30pm
A reminder that this year’s Annual
Service of Remembrance will be
taking place here at the University
of Bolton Stadium on Monday
15th May, starting at pitch-side at
6.30pm.
As we celebrate the 100th
anniversary since we went to
Wembley for the FA Cup Final in
1923, scoring the first goal there
and winning the first FA Cup final
played there, the theme of the
service is “And Did Those Feet”
based upon a play that tells the
story of two Bolton families in the
build-up to the final.
It tells the story of people walking
to Wembley and is both funny
and very moving with the pain of
the First World War in everyone’s
memory. Within the service we
shall have extracts from the play
from actors who have recently
performed at Bolton Little Theatre.
The service will begin pitch-side as
we pause to remember and lay a
wreath. It will then continue in the
Platinum Suite when, during the
service, names of loved ones that
have been inscribed in the Book
of Remembrance or engraved on
a Memorial Stone during the past
year will be read out.
All the names of loved ones to be
remembered from previous years
will be displayed in the big screen.
Within the service, people will be
invited to come forward and light
candles in memory of their loved
ones.
Today, as we push for promotion
via the play-offs, and a possible
return to Wembley to remember
our first visit in 1923 and the Papa
Johns Trophy final last month, it
is good to pause and remember
those who have been so important
in our journey and our life.
Light refreshments will be
served following the service,
the Papa Johns Trophy will also
be on display and the Books of
Remembrance will be available for
you to look up the name of your
loved one.
Enjoy this exciting game.
Bolton Wanderers 4
Reading 3
A roller coaster of emotions saw
the Wanderers secure promotion
to the Premier League after one of
the greatest comebacks in play-off
final history.
Two goals down after 12 minutes,
thanks to goals from Lee Nogan
and Adrian Williams, defeat
seemed inevitable when Reading
were awarded a penalty in the
35th minute. Stuart Lovell stepped
up to take the kick, but Keith
Branagan kept Bolton in it with a
magnificent save.
Wanderers came out with greater
purpose for the second half,
introducing Fabian De Freitas,
(Pictured) but it wasn’t until the 75th
minute that they got a foothold on
the scoreline thanks to a goal from
Owen Coyle.
There was just four minutes left
on the clock when substitute De
Freitas got away to drive past
Shaka Hislop in the Reading goal
and send the game into extra time.
Fourteen minutes into the extra
period Mixu Paatelainen headed
home to put Bolton in front and,
three minutes from time, the Finn
set up De Freitas to knock in the
fourth. Even then there were a few
nervous moments when playermanager
Jimmy Quinn netted
Reading’s third but Bolton held on
to return to the top flight after a
fifteen-year absence.
Team: Branagan, Green, Phillips,
McAteer, Bergsson, Stubbs,
McDonald, (De Freitas), Coyle,
Paatelainen, McGinlay, Thompson.
Attendance: 64,107
Division One Play-Off Final
Bolton Wanderers 3
Preston North End 0
After two successive Play-Off
failures Bolton returned to the
Premier League with a victory
over Lancashire rivals Preston
North End at the Millennium
Stadium in Cardiff.
Superior for all but the opening
exchanges, the Wanderers led
from the 16th minute as Preston
failed to clear their lines and
Gareth Farrelly swooped to drive a
low shot into the net from the edge
of the area.
Chances came and went for
Bolton and Preston were grateful
to be still in the game at half-time.
With 20 minutes left, ‘keeper Matt
Clarke made a terrific save from
David Healy that made sure Bolton
did not pay dearly for those missed
chances.
In the 89th minute Farrelly
released substitute Michael
Ricketts to score his 24th goal
of the season to rubber stamp
a return to the top flight and,
within seconds, Ricardo Gardner
scampered down the left to fire a
powerful left foot shot into the net
for the goal of the afternoon to put
the icing on the cake.
Team: Clarke, Barness, Charlton,
Frandsen, (Whitlow), Hendry,
Bergsson, Farrelly, Nolan,
Holdsworth, Hansen, (Ricketts),
Gardner.
Proud To Be a Wanderer! – If
we had been offered a play-off
place at the start of the season,
a massive majority of Wanderers
fans would have undoubtedly
taken that. Add in a totally
dominant display at Wembley in
completely outplaying EFL League
1 champions, Plymouth Argyle, to
win the Papa Johns Trophy and
it’s safe to say that this season
has been a memorable one – this
time for the right reasons!
However, the job isn’t finished
yet and the lads need each and
every one of us proud Wanderers
to get behind the team today.
There is no doubt that our club is
now owned and operated on the
basis that the supporters matter
and, on behalf of ALL BWFC fans
worldwide, the trust give thanks
to Sharon, Nick and Michael for
their vision and planning since
they took control of a distressed
football club in late 2019. Since the
signing of the MoU with the club in
August ‘21, your trust has played a
major part in the current levels of
positivity that exist at the University
of Bolton Stadium as evidenced by
the recent EFL Fan Engagement
Award acknowledging the fact that
we have the best fan engagement
of all the 72 EFL clubs – a massive
achievement!
What we now need to do is to
grow the trust membership to
ensure as many BWFC fans as
possible make use of that positive
relationship. Achievements of
the trust over the last couple of
years have been immense. These
include:
• Signing of the Memorandum of
Understanding
• Renewal of the Asset of
Community Value listing on the
stadium
• Consultation with the club on
ticket pricing
• Establishment of the Fanzone,
including the naming of the Dave
Higson Bar
• Growing the trust affiliate
membership numbers
• Involvement in Safety Advisory
Group meetings
• Input into the recent official
BWFC supporters survey
• Sponsorship of the recent
Supporter of the Season Award
• Wembley coach service to assist
with the fantastic response from
fans
• Various trust members
competitions including a Wembley
photo comp judged by Stelios
We would like to appeal to all
BWFC fans that aren’t yet trust
members to join and add to the
strength of the current relationship
with OUR club. For the equivalent
of 19p per week, your membership
will contribute to making the fans
voice as strong as possible and
give YOU the chance to influence
how that relationship develops to
the benefit of BWFC.
‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’
A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius
and cause lifechanging injuries,
while entering the pitch endangers
players, managers and match
officials.
We know those who commit these
illegal acts do not represent the
majority of supporters.
