MARLAND’S MUSINGS The Wanderers today take part in their 19th playoff game since 1987 when they were introduced as an end of season promotion competition. In that first season in 1987 the competition included a team from the division above to give them the opportunity to avoid being relegated. Bolton had finished fourth from bottom of Division Three (League One today) and faced Aldershot, who had finished sixth in Division Four, in the semifinal over two legs. Aldershot won the home leg 1-0 and the Wanderers led 2-1 after 90 minutes, thanks to two Tony Caldwell goals, to take the game into extra time. Unfortunately, the visitors found another goal to win 3-2 on aggregate and send the Wanderers into the bottom League for the first time in their history. Aldershot then defeated Wolves over two legs to secure promotion. In 1990 Bolton succumbed to Notts County in the semi-final by a 3-1 aggregate for promotion to what is now the Championship after ending the season in 6th spot. Bolton’s first play-off win didn’t come until 1991 when a Tony Philliskirk (pictured celebrating after the game) goal secured a 1-0 semi-final second leg win and a 2-1 aggregate score over Bury PLAY-OFF LOOKBACK. at Burnden Park before 19,198. At Wembley Tranmere Rovers won promotion thanks to an extra-time goal from substitute Chris Malkin. Success finally came in the playoffs in 1995. In a battle of the Wanderers for promotion to reach the Premier League it was Wolves who held the advantage after a 2-1 win at Molineux. In a night of high drama at Burnden Park it was the Wanderers from Bolton that won through to Wembley after extratime thanks to two goals from John McGinlay. In Bolton’s first play-off final they won through by 4-3 after extra time against Reading in a never to be forgotten game that saw them two goals behind at half time. Despite a 4-3 defeat in the second leg at Portman Road Wanderers went through to Wembley on away goals. In the final Watford ran out 2-0 winners. In 2000, it was Ipswich Town again that stood between Bolton and a second visit to Wembley that season, having already played in the FA Cup semi-finals. After a 2-2 draw at the Reebok Stadium, Ipswich won the second leg 5-3 after extra time with Bolton being reduced to nine men and the home side awarded three penalties. The last play-off competition that the Club participated in was in 2001. West Bromwich Albion were dispatched on a 5-2 aggregate in the semi’s and in the final Preston North End couldn’t prevent Bolton reaching the Premier League with a 3-0 success at Cardiff.
