Did you know that the Central Kootenay has 2 fully licensed
abattoirs that, between them, serve all species of animals
raised here? Sourcing meat from locally raised and processed
animals is a great way to ensure that they are humanely
raised and slaughtered. And just like most other foods we
eat, fresh meat is seasonal as well. In the Central Koote-
nay we can access fresh beef and pork almost year-round,
though the most common season for both is the fall through
mid winter.
Lamb and chickens are available from early summer
through late fall, and turkey is generally raised to be ready
for the Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts. Well-packaged
frozen meat is high quality and available year-round.
