Hundreds of
pet turtles
saved from
shell of a life

A WOMAN who takes in
abandoned turtles is warning
would-be reptile owners about
buying them online.
Donna Moot has rescued
hundreds of sick, injured or
abandoned turtles over the past 15
years – many of which were once
people’s pets.
She says anyone planning to
buy a turtle needs be wary of
“misinformation” on how easy
they are to look after and animal
welfare issues such as sending
turtles by post across the country.
“People find them and sometimes
they’re surrendered and they
come here until I can get them
rehabilitated and re-homed.”
Moot runs her Turtle Rescue
and Rehoming operation out of
her house in Somerfield, which is
currently home to about 75 turtles.
“All the food, all the equipment
I pay for myself. I’m very fortunate
here that the Canterbury SPCA,
they will support me with the
stray turtles, so they’ll help with
vet bills for that.”
Over winter, Moot may spend
up to a $1000 a month on electricity
to run and heat the many water
tank habitats in her home. Some
turtles aren’t strong enough to hibernate
outside through the winter
and have to be brought indoors.
But Moot believes turtles make
great pets – for the right person.
“I get a lot of turtles that have
been bought on Trade Me.
Unfortunately, many of them
have significant shell injuries,
deformities and are quite unwell
because (the owners) have been
given misinformation about how
to actually care for them.”
People often don’t realise turtles
have a lifespan of more than 50
years – so it’s definitely a longterm
commitment, she said.
“I have an adoption fee of a
minimum donation of $20, which
isn’t very much, but I expect that
the person can show me that
they’ve got the correct set up, so
they may have to fork out quite a
bit of money for that.”

Ten-year-old composer’s
music wows audience
IT IS said Beethoven wrote
his first complete piece of music
at the age of 12 – but Pax Read
did not want to wait that
long.
The 10-year-old Medbury
School pupil had his solo piano
piece Silver premiered by
Professor Mark Menzies from
Canterbury University School
of Music during the Magic
Carpet Music Trust’s inaugural
anniversary celebration, held in
Wānaka on Saturday.
The trust was formed by
patron Lyn Milne and awardwinning
performer-composer
Rakuto Kurano in May last year,
to promote music throughout
rural communities in the South
Island, while providing young
performers and composers with
more opportunities.
Pax’s musical pursuits include
piano, flute and participation in
the school choir. He has been
studying composition with
Kurano since the beginning of
2022 through the school’s music
programme. In addition to
instrumental lessons, the school
also offers weekly one-on-one
composition lessons, which
made it possible for Pax to study
with Kurano.
Pax spent the last few months
composing Silver with guidance
from Kurano.
“There is something so special
about hearing your composition
performed live by a professional
musician for the first time,” said
Kurano.
“I wanted to ensure Pax
experienced this at an early
age.”
The premiere of the piece
garnered an overwhelmingly
positive response, receiving
hearty applause from the
audience of about 60 people.
Many were stunned by the
maturity of the piece for
someone of Pax’s age.
“Pax composed a remarkably
assured composition for piano
that was a pleasure to present to
the public,” said Menzies.

awards
SXITY-FIVE young people from
throughout Canterbury have
received The Duke of Edinburgh’s
Hillary Award at a ceremony at
the city council’s civic offices.
On May 8, the bronze, silver
and gold awards were presented
by Mayor Phil Mauger.
The students worked with Chris
Allan from the Joshua Foundation
to achieve the awards.
They clocked up more than
2000 hours of voluntary service
within their community, developed
a new skill and become
physically active, engaging in
both team sports and individual
pursuits.
Mauger said: “The Duke of
Edinburgh’s Hillary Award
ceremonies are always significant
occasions, as we proudly celebrate
Ōtautahi rangatahi who have
embraced the challenge of the
award, risen to every occasion,
and achieved success along each
step of the journey.”
This year marks 60 years of
the award in New Zealand,
during which time over 275,000
young people have participated,
supported by thousands of
volunteers.

under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.

Moving with the times reaps success
SKODA AS a global brand is
very much on a roll. There are
many new models, the brand
is marketed buoyantly in New
Zealand, and at dealer level
there is a lot of passion for the
product.
This evaluation focuses on the
Karoq, a mid-size sport utility
vehicle that has just undergone a
major facelift for 2023.
The Karoq is popular here and,
as a consequence, it is available
with plenty of choice. There are
three price-friendly variants –
Ambition at $45,990, Style at
$51,990 and Sportline at
$63,990.
The evaluation car was the
mid-spec Style, whereas the
Sportline adds a 2-litre engine
and four-wheel-drive; the two
entry-level models are front
wheel-drive only and have a
1.4-litre turbocharged fourcylinder
petrol engine.
The latter is much the
European standard with strong
mid-range torque (250Nm from
1500rpm to 3500rpm), and a
low point of peak power (110kW
at 5000rpm). Together, these
figures combine to produce
strong acceleration. Skoda claims
a 9.2sec standstill to 100km/h
acceleration time.
Figures aside, it is in the dayto-day
commute that you really
appreciate the quality of this
engine, it gets about its business
with urgency, yet is unflustered
and quiet. It responds with
vibrancy and is instant in its
delivery, a lot of that is to do with
the quick shifting eight-speed
automatic and clever matching
between the engine and
transmission ratios.
The Karoq is an adept
highway cruiser, it is whisper
quiet at speed, and provides all
occupants with a comfortable,
well cushioned ride.
While the Karoq can be seen
as a purposeful all-rounder, one
of its greatest claims to fame
is that of its fuel consumption,
or should I say, lack of
consumption. That’s the beauty
of European engines, those
that come out of the Volkswagen
group’s factories are high
on efficiency and low on
emissions.
The end result is a 7.2-litre
per 100km combined cycle
average fuel usage claim.
The consumption readout
reinforced that during my time
in the test car. It was constantly
showing around 7.8l/100km
with an instantaneous figure of
4.8l/100km at the legal limit, the
engine turning over leisurely at
just 1700rpm.
What I also like about the
Karoq is its practicality. It is a
compact car at just 4.4m, but it
has good space inside and useful
load space.
Bear in mind as well, there are
many little features that make
Skoda stand out as a car maker,
they don’t stand out at first, but
once familiar with the car you’ll
appreciate them.
For all of its clever kit and
efficient technology, the Karoq
doesn’t qualify for a New
Zealand Government clean car
discount.
But the good news is that it
won’t cost you a penalty, both
engines and all models are
fee neutral. I’m also reliably
informed that there is a healthy
supply of all Skoda models.
