Welcome to the May edition of the
British Breeder.
This month we pay attention to British
Bred eventers in the month of the Mars
Equestrian Badminton Horse Trials
which takes place over the Coronation
Weekend. It is very exciting to have
several British Breds competing in the
main competition including Ros Canter
riding two, Lordships Graffalo & Pencos
Crown Jewel; Gemma Stevens on our
cover girl, Jalapeno III; Tregilder with
Oliver Townend; Happy Days with Izzy
Taylor; Alice Casburn with homebred
Topspin & Tom Crisp with Liberty &
Glory – so maybe the dream day of a
British Team made up of British riders on
British bred horses is not that far away.
There is also good representation with
the youngsters in the Dubarry Burghley
Young Event Horse Qualifier.
We have our regular slots from the
Studbooks and delighted to welcome
the Irish Draught Studbook joining in
with regular contributions.
There is a brief roundup from the British
Stallion Event that took place at
Addington Equestrian earlier in
February. You can find out how to
watch it again in the feature.
The Breeding season is now in full flow,
we have some very poignant articles by
two top veterinary practices on ‘Dummy
foal syndrome’ and ‘Foal limb
abnormalities’. Both are things we
breeders all dread but they do happen
and can be treated so the latest
information on these scenarios are vital
for any breeder, small or large. Every
day is a day at school!
This edition has been a team event;
many thanks to all the contributors who
provided such excellent articles and
particularly to Ed Lyall who was injured
at work and still managed to send in
his article and associated images from
a hospital bed. We wish him a very
speedy recovery.
Wishing you all a successful foaling
NEWS
WBFSH Studbooks
Jumping Global
Champions Trophy
Preparations are well under way for the
inaugural “WBFSH Jumping Studbooks
Global Champions Trophy”, which will
take place just one week after the FEI/
WBFSH World Breeding Championships
for Young Horses (WBCYH), from 28th
September to 1st October 2023.
Developed in collaboration with Tops
Equestrian Events (TEE), this brand new
concept of a global studbook team
competition invites each WBFSH
member studbook to put forward a team
of five horses/team in each of five
different age categories (5, 6, 7, 8
year-old horses, and stallion class for
ages 8 & 9).
What makes this competition so special
is that the team selection is exclusively
carried out by our member studbooks,
given each of them the opportunity to
promote their best horses and make their
mark on the global stage.
The aim of this event is for sport horse
breeders to have an additional
opportunity to showcase their most
promising young horses at top level; to
promote them in an authentic
competition, and on a world class stage
with one of the biggest show jumping
organisers, in particular of the Longines
Global Champions Tour. During this
event an international auction of a
selection of the competing horses will
also be organised by TopsTrading.
BE International British Bred successes this
spring - Burnham Market International
The 4*S International Class was the
warm up for many heading to
Badminton. Half of the Top TEN horses
were British Bred which is exciting and
increases the likelihood of a British
Bred horse having a good chance at
Badminton at the beginning of May.
Best of the British was TREGILDER
(Royal Concorde ex Trewins) bred by
Preci Spark Event Horses and ridden
by Oliver Townend, took 3rd place in
this hot class with only 0.4 of a time
penalty and 3.3 penalites off the
winner. TREGILDER heads for
Badminton and will definitely be one
to watch.
Next, was the British Bred Cevin Z
son, HAPPY DAYS, bred by Emma
Humphrey and ridden by Izzy Taylor.
Happy Days is out of the full
Thoroughbred mare, Vale Brook, who
has classic TB lines such as Connaught
and Tudorville. Vale Brook is a
SHB(GB) mare. She has also
produced another eventing gelding
by Grafenstolz who competed at the
Osberton 3*L in 2019.
In 5th place came the highest placed
British Bred mare, LUNA MIST, (by
Alvescot Paper Moon ex Monsoon
Matilda) ridden by Tom McEwen.
In 8th, was the lovely mare JALAPENO
III by the late Chilli Morning out of
Maiden Voyage, bred by eventer and
SHB(GB) Nick Gauntlett and ridden
by Gemma Stevens took 8th place as
part of their preparation for Badminton.
In 9th, was COLORADO BLUE by the
prolific eventing sire, Jaguar Mail, out
of Rock Me Baby (Rock King) ridden
by Austin O’Connor. Colorado Blue
is another heading to Badminton.
His dam, Rock Me Baby has been a
brilliant eventing broodmare; already
a dam of Balham Mist (CCI-4* by Mill
Law) and the youngest progeny being
Ventura Rock (CCI-3* by Newmarket
Venture) is also with Auston O’Connor.
Tregilder - By permission of
Hannah Cole Photography
As a true studbook event, the “WBFSH
Studbooks Jumping Global Champions
Trophy” is therefore a great
opportunity for studbooks to make
their mark, providing an international
showroom for the best young products
of the WBFSH member studbooks, and
thereby highlighting the importance of
breeding, represented by our individual
breeders, as well as by our hard working
studbooks, for our sport.
Studbook selections all over the world
Equine Obituaries
This spring has seen the loss of two
exciting stallions; Upsilon & Cupid
March
©Ben Clark
UPSILON, the exceptional
Anglo-Arab stallion, very sadly died
at the age of 15yrs.
After causing a sensation in
competition with Thomas Carlile, then
seeing his career come to an abrupt
end due to a serious illness, Upsilon
was proving himself as a stallion in
eventing and also in showjumping.
At Pompadour, Upsilon’s progeny
monopolized the podiums. In 2020,
Upsilon (57.62%: Canturo - O’Vive
X AA - Fusain du Defey X AA) was
ranked as the best sire of young
horses in the French CCE Classic
Cycle and, remarkably, also 15th in
showjumping.
A real phenomenon from his earliest
years with Thomas Carlile, including
the French championship titles at the
ages of four, five and six, then vice
world champion as a seven-yearold
at the WBCYH Mondial du Lion,
Upsilon became a talking point as a
sire. He has left a legacy of some very
exciting progeny that can continue on
his behalf.
CUPID MARCH
After having recently been awarded
a Premium Grading with the SHB(GB)
and being seen at the British Breeding
Stallion Event, Very sadly, the lovely
CUPID MARCH was lost to Colic.
He was already being hailed as
one of the most exciting young event
stallions to be available to British
Breeders, after having started his
career with Piggy March with a bang
by winning the Burghley Young Event
Horse 4yr old Champs and was set
for an exciting eventing career under
her and Tom’s guidance.
British
Showjumping’s
British Bred
successes this Spring
It was a 1,2,3 for British Breds in the
Blue Chip Champs Grand Prix with
Anthony Condon on board two of the
Hales family and Shaw Farm Stud’s
home-breds, SFS MIRAGE & SFS
VINCOMTE (Veni Vidi Vici x Magic
Darco, half brother to Mirage on the
damside), took the top two slots with
Phillip Miller taking third on the Brendon
Stud’s own DON ROYALE (Don VHP Z x
Orville).
“I’m delighted for the Haleses and Shaw
Farm Stud, it’s a very good result for their
breeding programme,” said Anthony.
“This was the first Grand Prix MIRAGE
has won but she’s been knocking on the
door, jumping clear in the last four and
finishing second in two. It was lovely to
get in a win.” Said Anthony.
The 10-year-old Mirage is by Barrichello
and out of the Magic Darco mare
Illusion IV, a daughter of Nick Skelton’s
former top mare Florida and competed
by Lisa Hales before becoming a
broodmare.
“VINCOMTE has been at the party
a bit longer with plenty of Grand Prix
experience. He’s getting back to full
fitness, and this was a nice class for him
after jumping at 1.60m, he wasn’t under
pressure and enjoyed it; now we’ll kick
on for the summer,” said Anthony, who
was full of praise for the show – “It is
well supported and well organised and
the course-designer did a great job!”
The home-bred dynamic ‘pocket rocket’
SANAVISTA landed Angie Thompson’s
first win in an extremely quick,
competitive jump-off to take the Blue
Chip Karma Performance Championship
on the Mr Visto 7-year-old out of
Oksana W, Angie’s former top ride and
a daughter of Aldato.
Another British-bred, FANTA-ASTIC,
took the Heritage Insurance Diamond
Final.. Maidenhead, Berkshire-based
Louise McDonald pulled off a fantastic
win in the final moments of the Heritage
Insurance Diamond Final. Last-to-go in
a 19-horse jump-off, Louise executed
slick ultra-tight turns at optimum pace to
gallop ahead by more than two seconds
Emma-Jo Slater and Kim Barzilay’s
home-bred KIMBA FLAMENCO (Je
T’Aime Flamenco x Heartbreaker) seized
victory in the NAF Five Star Winter Silver
League Title. Emma-Jo also finished
fourth on another of Kim’s home-breds,
KIMBA TIME (Time Out x Heartbreaker).
The 14-year-old Flamenco was born
and bred at owner Kim Barzilay’s
Buckinghamshire home and was
produced by Emma-Jo from baby
novice classes up to jumping 1.35m
competitions before he joined
British-based Irishman Billy Twomey to
jump in top-flight, five-star international
competitions.
Emma-Jo is pleased to be reacquainted
with the gelding out of her favourite
mare and prolific winner, Uttah Van Het
Indehof: “It’s good to have him back, we
know each other so well.”
Anthony Condon was in flying form to
take a very competitive Winter Grade C
Championship on Sophia Kelly’s
7-year-old mare ASHDALE ALLSTAR
(Big Star x Luidam).
Anthony acquired the ride four months
ago on Allstar. The seven-year-old mare
is sired by Big Star, individual gold
medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics for
Nick Skelton.“She’s got better and better
in the last few months and has notched
up a few wins. This was a testing
track and the biggest class she’s won,”
said Anthony, who is impressed with
Allstar. “She’s all there with plenty
of opinion but that’s what makes her
good – she’s got some fight in her and
gets stuck in. She’s similar to her dam
Ashdale Luxara, by Luidam and a former
ride of mine, and she gets herfeistiness
and scope from Big Star.”
Allstar has all the right attributes to get
to the top and Anthony is hoping she
follows in the footsteps of her famous
sire.

Is It Time For The Horse World In The
Uk To Pull Together And Work Out
Where The Young Breeders Of The
Future Might Be And How We Can
Help Them? - By Caroline Sussex
The competition season is in full swing,
endurance started in March. Arabians
and their derivatives are competing in
dressage to qualify for the year end
Championships. The showing season
starts soon with the desire to qualify for
HOYS still the ultimate goal. Arabian
racing has been on a downward spiral
but exciting news that Arena Racing
Company have taken over the Arabian
Racing Organisation with the ARO team
still operating the racing. The company
hopes to build up the grass roots
competitors. It is hoped that racing might
offer another discipline for the Arabians.
Demand is high for horses but sadly,
breeders are declining, mainly due to
the fact that there are very few young
breeders interested and or able to take
on the mantle. The real cost of breeding
horses has left breeders out of pocket
for many years with prices not much
better than the 1980’s. Why would this
encourage new breeders?
Avonbrook Odin & Katherine Bertram - BRC 3-Day Horse Trials. Photo - Action Replay Photography
Government is putting financial pressures
on owners and breeders all the time
and not helping out with trade with our
nearest neighbours – Europe.
If we cannot trade then what does the
future hold. Will horses become only for
the Elite and will we be importing them
all from Europe?
If you want organisations to continue
with their work, they need to be
supported by the Members. The Arab
Horse Society have a number of awards
for their Members to compete for.
On contacting owners of Arab Horse
Society Premium Stallions, it seems
that the number of breeders requesting
nominations are dropping and actual
mares being bred is decreasing. This
trend has been quietly happening for
many years. Initially, it was considered
good that not so many horses were
being bred due to the over production in
the 70’s – 90’s. That era has long gone
and various factors have resulted in the
reduction starting with Foot and Mouth in
2021 and recently covid has resulted in
numbers now at alarming levels.
In the last year large breeders of all
horses have passed away and studs are
being disbanded or scaled down. Is it
time for the horse world to pull together
and work out where this is all going and
seriously work out a future plan?
The general public want a horse to ride
but cannot afford land. The cost of
keeping horses, cost of living, cost of
everything is a serious threat to the horse
world in the future. Racing have
admitted it.
Man of Dreams
Perhaps it is time to think of sharing
a horse and breeding a foal jointly,
keeping it at a specialist breeding stud?
Get the younger generation involved in
breeding their own horse. We all know
how good horses are for mental health.
As an “older” breeder, there is no one
to carry on my stud, so I am gradually
downsizing and ensuring that the
stallions have frozen semen taken as it
is likely that I will have to geld all colts
in the future. However, even doing that
means keeping them until 3 or 4 as
entires. Those breeders around realise
the gene pool is shrinking fast but there is
nothing they can really do about it.
Potential breeders complain of the costs
of using frozen semen and sending
a mare to the Centres but owners of
stallions have less help and less ability to
take mares at public stud.
This includes the Performance Horse
Awards which is a year-long high
points competition in ridden disciplines
including endurance, racing, show
jumping, eventing, ridden showing and
dressage. The winners are invited to
receive their awards at the Arab Horse
Society National Show in July. Separate
sections are for Pure Breds, Anglo Arabs
and Part Breds with an Overall Winner.
The new Winter Dressage Top Ten
Championship was launched in 2021 to
encourage horses and riders to compete
in the winter months. There are also
awards for Premium Progeny each year
and the Ferishal Trophy in Endurance for
the Member with the highest points.
Studbook News - IDHS (GB)
Irish Draught
Horse Society
(GB)
THE IRISH DRAUGHT AND
IRISH SPORT HORSE
The Irish Draught Horse Society (GB) is
delighted to be contributing to the British
Breeder magazine. There has been
involvement with the British Equestrian
Federation for many years and Irish
Draught stallions have proudly
participated in the Stallion Event on
several occasions.
Formed in 1979, when British breeders
wanted to be able to register their horses
in Great Britain, this is a ‘daughter’
Society, affiliated to the holder of the
Irish Draught stud books, which currently
is Horse Sport Ireland (HSI). The Society
aims to preserve, protect and promote
the Irish Draught horse. Our classification
system, purebred registrations and all
stallion and mare inspections are run in
accordance with HSI rules.
In a later article, we will describe the
strict and thorough vetting and inspection
process for purebred and sport horse
stallions and mares. There will be future
articles about the history of the breed,
results from our annual inspections and
major shows.
The IDHS(GB) is a Passport Issuing
Organisation for pure and part bred
horses. Following Brexit, there was a
great deal of work to be done to
establish the registration of horses and
also put in place the practices required
when they move to Great Britain..
The Irish Draught horse has been a
recognised breed for well over a
century. It is said that it is a horse
‘designed by the Irish farmer’. It needed
to be versatile; able to work on the land,
carry the owner out hunting and have
enough ‘step’ in the trap to get the family
to Church on Sunday.
Lenamore jumping a ditch at Burghley - Photo Libby Law Photography
They were a highly valued and versatile
horse, both as a draft animal and also as
a charger. At times of famine and during
the mechanisation of farms in Ireland,
countless numbers went for meat and so
bloodlines were lost.
In 1976, the Irish Draught Horse Society
was created in Ireland, to record
pedigrees and maintain the standards
and characteristics of the breed. During
this time, the introduction of
Thoroughbred blood was used to
improve performance, stamina and to
increase numbers.
With varied sources of feed available
on the crofts, this is a truly ‘good doer’.
It might have had to pick at gorse chop
or enjoy an occasional turnip in the past,
depending on the local availability of
fodder. Today’s horses carry on this trait
and are known as easy keepers.
Grey mare and foal - Jo Aykroyd
Many of the breed were lost over the
years. Thousands were sold all around
the world, where they were used in wars.
The famous Clover Hill was half
Thoroughbred and King of
Diamonds also carried a good
percentage of TB blood. Both stallions
appear in pedigrees as Registered
Irish Draught.
Studbook News - IDHS (GB)
The purebred ID is a foundation animal.
It has stamina, robust and correct
conformation, athletic movement and a
kind, forgiving temperament. A TB
stallion on a ID mare created the
legendary half-bred Irish hunter, famous
around the world for its ability to get the
rider out of trouble by finding a ‘fifth leg’.
Both the purebred ID and the Irish Sport
Horse make superb hunters.
These characteristics make the breed
suitable for amateur and professional
alike. From the current HOYS
Heavyweight Hunter Champion, to
Lenamore and Headley Britannia who
won Burghley, to Jumbo, the sire of
countless event horses, to wonderful
police horses, this is a versatile breed.
We remember showjumpers like
Boomerang, Buttevant Boy, Cruising and
The Rock. Then there are carriage horses,
like the Windsor Greys bred by our late
Queen. There are countless horses
competing in Riding Club events
throughout the UK and there are even
some competing in dressage up to
Grand Prix level..
Many modern 5* event horses, like Mr
Chunky and International show
jumpers like the stallion Billy Congo,
carry ID blood. While the cross with
athletic European breeds has proved
extremely successful at top level, there
is a growing demand for the Traditional
Irish Horse (TIH). The TIH carries only a
mixture of Irish Draught, TB or
Connemara blood. The part bred ID is
enjoying a resurgence as riders seek the
horse with the right temperament and
type for them.
Either way, the versatile Irish Draught is a
horse for all seasons and all disciplines.
Please visit our Facebook page and our
website www.idhsgb.org.uk, where you
will find lists of all our
inspected Purebred and Irish Draught
Sport Horse (25% minimum proven ID
blood) stallions. There are details of
affiliated shows, how to register horses
and obtain a passport. There are also
links to the various working groups within
the Society, with phone numbers and
email addresses.
The SHB(GB) Breeders trophy
Each year at the AGM we present the
fabulous Breeders Trophy to highlight the
achievements of someone we believe
has made a difference to British
breeding. This year the trophy was
presented to Carolyn Bates the owner of
the late and great stallion Jumbo. While
much has been written by this super
stallion we thought it was time Carolyn
was presented with a trophy to
highlight the achievements of the colt that
she bought at Malvern sales in 1984.
It is that astonishing that 35 years have
passed since his first offspring was
registered with SHB(GB) and yet they
are still competing and winning. His
genes are still much evident in British
breeding which is why we feel he is
a worthy winner. Even at this year’s
Badminton his presence is felt in both
the bloodlines of competition horses
and stallions taking part in the SHB(GB)
parade.
Bred by Archie Smith-Maxwell Jumbo by
the leading Irish Draught sire Skippy was
born in 1984. He was acquired as a colt
foal weanling by Carolyn who owned
him thereafter till his death in 2015. Aged
five his own talent came to the fore when
he won the Masterlock ‘potential
dressage horse’. Ridden by Andrew
Nicholson at seven-years-old he won
the young horse trophy at Le Lions and
completed Boekelo 3* in 15th place.
He then competed in showjumping with
William Funnell and dressage with Lizzie
Murray before concentrating on stud
duties and turning out for the occasional
stallion parade and even a turn in a
Christmas pantomime.
“He turned out to be my once in a
lifetime horse and has been a huge part
of my life and I am immensely proud
and privileged to have owned him,” said
Carolyn.
Pencos Crown Jewel, by Jumbo, will compete in her
first Badminton this year with Ros Canter
(Photo - P Nixon Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials)
Jumbo Numbers
• He currently has 442 direct
offspring registered with SHB(GB)
– and plenty more registered with
other societies
• He is the leading all-time sire
of horses registered with British
Eventing – having sired at least 416
• His stock is not just limited to
eventing; the mare Vulcanite was the
winner of the 2016 Working Hunter
Champion at Royal Windsor
• He has featured in the World
Breeding Federation for Sport
Horses (WBFSH) leading sire
rankings since 2008. His current
standing is 16th.
Other News
Dates for stallion and mare gradings are
currently being planned in the office.
Grading your mare means her offspring
will be eligible for SHB(GB) studbook
papers (providing the sire is registered
either with SHB(GB) or another official
breed society). The owners of mares
achieving Head Studbook status will
receive a voucher for free foal
registration and the three highest marked
mares at the end of the year will receive
SHB(GB) stud vouchers. For all rules and
regulations on grading and other issues
visit the downloads page on the website.
We are always seeking suitable venues
for mare and foal gradings. We need
an enclosed space to allow mares and
foals to run free, some space for parking
and would prefer to have at least four
mares to grade on the day. If you would
like to host a grading or need to speak to
someone on any other matter
Sports Pony - Celebrating Success
Dressage
2023 got off to a good start for SPSS
registered ponies with four making it
on to the British Dressage long list in
contention for a place at the FEI Pony
European Championships 2023. These
four combinations, plus one more SPSS
registered pony, then all competed at the
first UK based FEI Pony
International (CDIP) for 2023, held at
Addington Equestrian in March.
We were thrilled to see that SPSS
registered gelding Amden Supreme
Golden Dancer aka Leo placed 3rd in
the Team Test, 2nd in the Individual and
4th in the Freestyle to Music ridden by
Ella Glennon on their international
debut. We first met Ella when she and
her mother Debbie presented Leo
for SPSS Youngstock Evaluation as a
yearling in 2017. UK born Leo, who is
by Dating AT out of SPSS graded Sweet
Fancy (by Scampi) impressed our judges
and gained an SPSS Gold Premium,
so it’s great to see that early promise
converted into International results. Leo
& Ella now go on to the CDIP in Le Mans
(FRA) in mid-April where the competition
will no doubt be intense as Le Mans is
the venue for the 2023 Dressage Pony
Euros in August.
Also at the at the Addington CDIP,
Abigail Gray achieved top 6 placings
with a pair of ponies by SPSS Elite
graded Caesar 171, SPSS registered
George Clooney B.S (x Santano) and
SPSS passported & Elite graded Godrics
Campeggio (x Apslau). Both of these
ponies are British-bred, George by Julie
Lockey and Campeggio by Bev Brown.
Abigail & George are also off to
Le Mans, as are Fleur Pocock and her
own SPSS registered Brouwershaven’s
Jasper (Valerio x Vita Nova’s Hanassie)
who also made their international debut
at Addington. Completing the quintet of
SPSS ponies in the Addington CDIP and
also making their debut for GB was SPSS
graded Godrics Dionysus (SPSS Elite
Glencarrig Dolphin & Elizabeth Jelfs
Photo - Julia Shearwater
Danger 36 x Donnerwetter). Ridden by
Daisy Bullman, Dionysus was also bred
by Bev Brown.
Alongside the Pony classes at Addington
International, there were also FEI
Children on Horses classes, where we
were delighted to see SPSS graded
Machno Gabrielle (Relmo x Tylan
Danny) & Izabel Worthington make
their International debut a successful
one with 2nd place in the Preliminary
competition then 4th in both the Team
and Individual classes. Bred in Wales by
Meirion Jones, Gabrielle is a TB x WPCS
Sec D with her damline containing many
famous Welsh stallions, including Nebo
Brenin, Nebo Black Magic & Pentre
Eiddwen Comet. As Gabrielle has an FEI
Pony Height Certificate, we hope to see
them competing in the FEI Pony classes
soon, now that they have gained this
valuable international experience.
Clarke’s Bluewood Donaustern (Titelheld
x Axis) has started 2023 in winning style
winning both Prelim classes and adding
a further 10 points to their BD tally.
Another Bluewood bred but a part bred
this time – Bluewood Tornado
at Advanced Medium and was 3rd at
that level at the Winter Area Festival at
Beacons Equestrian.
Premium stallion Elfenstein at the Trakehner Verband
having competed at the 2022 Nationals
at Novice, has made a winning debut
at that level under new rider William
Roberts.
Premium graded stallion Elfenstein
scored just under 70% at both
Elementary and Medium. He will be
standing at public stud this year
covering naturally and AI in Cornwall at
AP Sporthorses.
On the international stage the
incredible mare TSF Dalera BB (Easy
News
Foaling season has started for many of
our breeders and plans are also
underway for the 2024 foal crop.
To help our mare owners select a
suitable sire, the NPS are featuring
different NPS licensed stallions on our
social media platforms over the Spring
which can help draw attention to some
different bloodline options.
We also sent three stallions to the British
Breeding Stallion Event at Addington in
February. These were Jane Laffey’s NPS
Sports Accredited BRP stallion
Rotherwood Jubilee Diamond
(Rotherwood Just A Peep x Rotherwood
Quick Step by Cusop Dimension),
Jan Carmichael’s BRP stallion Fielden
Mink’s Legacy (Ninfield Minks Legend x
Fielden Fieldmouse by Peterlitten xx) and
Martine Harding’s BRP Sport Category
and NPS Sports Accredited stallion The
Squire (Acado x Oldhills Princess Belle
by Rotherwood Peter Pan).
All three stallions proved to be excellent
ambassadors for the breed with
exemplary manners in the stables and
athletic displays in the main ring.
Also in February we celebrated the
winners of the 2022 NPS/Derby House
British Riding Pony Performance Scheme.
We had some excellent entries and the
Sports Category registered Winston
Classic Gold (Silver Heaven x Ozzys
Cooleen) owned by Sarah Davis and
bred by Mai Rath was our Overall
Champion topping both the Dressage
and Jumping sections.
placing second overall in the
Performance scheme was our first ever
driving entry, Beccas Biddy’s Glee
Jennifer Bernard.
Moor Hall Peter Pan (Stanley Grange
Cocksure x Moor Hall Tinkerbell),
owned and bred by Mrs J Newnham &
Miss M Godden, had another successful
result in the show ring winning the points
for the in hand showing section and
placing overall 3rd. Then in 4th place
and the winner of the ridden showing
section was Jan Champney’s Penrock
Perfect Puzzle (Copilot x Daria Tj) bred
by Dr Michelle Findlay.
Winners and all entrants have received
some amazing prizes, such as rugs and
lunge lines for these superstar ponies,
which have been generously provided
by Derby House. The NPS cannot thank
Derby House enough for their
continued support with this unique
scheme for 2023. We would also like
to thank all who entered in 2022 who
received a generous voucher from the
sponsors. We look forward to getting
started with the scheme for 2023.
Advertorial - Dodson & Horrell
Dodson and
Horrell’s Guide
to Successful
Foal Feeding
Let us take the guess work
out of foal nutrition with
our range of scientifically
formulated products
Equilac
Equilac is a mare’s milk replacer,
carefully formulated to provide the
correct balance of calories, protein,
vitamins and minerals to support the
growing foal whilst closely mimicking
the typical composition of mare’s milk.
It is suitable for foals after colostrum
delivery, from one day old to weaning,
providing the foal with high levels of
quality protein to support a natural rate
of growth and development.
Please note: Equilac is not a source of
colostrum, therefore it is vital that
colostrum is the primary source of milk
for the first 12-14 hours after birth, to
appropriately establish the foal’s immune
system. After colostrum is successfully
consumed, Equilac further supports
immunity with essential vitamins and
minerals to meet the foal’s increased
requirements until weaning.
Creep Pellets
Creep Pellets are formulated specifically
for foals and weanlings with the added
benefit of milk powder to ensure quality
protein intake. Creep Pellets can be fed
as early as 10-14 days postpartum
if needed and are fully balanced in all
essential vitamins and minerals, to ensure
the requirements of growing youngstock
are met. Creep Pellets also contain added
digestive support (Actisaf Yeast, MOS
+ FOS prebiotics, Fenugreek and Mint),
to support of the intestinal microbiome of
young foals and positively impact
metabolic health, growth and behaviour.
Creep Pellets can be fed dry or soaked
with water to provide ease of
chewing.
The recommended feeding rate is
900g-1.3kg/100kg of bodyweight
per day. For example, a 55kg foal will
need a minimum of 495g per day (¼ of
a stubbs scoop).
Suregrow
Suregrow is a versatile option for all
breeding stock due to its concentrated
vitamin and minerals levels and additional
ingredients that support foals, youngstock,
mares and stallions. The healthy balance
of vitamins and minerals ensure increased
requirements throughout growth and
development are met.
Suregrow can be fed as early as 10-14
days if needed, providing an additional
nutritional option for young foal. It has a
low feeding rate and is low in calories,
making it ideal for youngstock that hold
their weight well on forage and grazing
alone.
Suregrow also contains digestive support
(Actisaf Yeast, MOS + FOS prebiotics),
ideal for youngstock to support their
intestinal health and nutrient absorption.
Additional vitamin E is included to
support immune health and function.
Suregrow is high in good quality protein
to optimise muscular health and
development within their natural rate of
growth. Biotin, zinc and methionine are
also included in support of hoof health.
Stallion Feature - Tenareze
Tenareze
Tenareze who is affectionately
known as Taz at home was bred
in France and started his eventing
career as a stallion and under the
tutelage of Thomas Carlile.
At the end of his 7 year old year, Harry
and his late father Richard Meade
visited Thomas Carlile to see Tenareze
as Harry was looking for a new ride for
long standing owner Nigella Hall and
they felt he ticked all the boxes. Prior to
joining Harry and in consultation with
Thomas, the decision was made to have
Tenareze gelded after collecting semen,
so his breeding legacy could continue
but Tenareze could focus on his
competitive career.
“Obviously some stallions can progress
to a high level but they have to have an
exceptional temperament, whereas Taz
always had one eye on the fairer sex!”
Event horses need a really thorough
education to succeed at the very top
level, and time to fully understand the
questions they are likely to face.
Consequently, on arrival in the UK
and no longer spending time at stud,
Tenareze dropped down a level to
ensure each building block was in place
as, although he had some top results, he
wasn’t always self-sufficient in his way
of going across country and also had a
suspicion of ditches. Harry took him
hunting, team chasing and schooled
around point-to-point courses to build
his confidence and slowly progressed
through the levels of eventing.
“We would jump ditches regularly, just
on a loose rein out of a walk in a very
nice, generous way, giving him a chance
to look, see, understand, accept and
jump, which has helped him overcome
his anxiety.”
This approach has benefitted Tenareze
who has had success at all levels of the
sport with top placings at 3* & 4*level,
including a 2nd place finish at Millstreet
4*Long. Last Autumn he successfully
completed his first 5* at Pau in
September 2022 and is aiming for
Badminton 2023.
26 | BRITISH BREEDER

Stallion Feature - Tenareze
Breeding
Tenareze is a compact horse with
beautiful expressive paces that score
well in the dressage arena and has the
gallop and stamina you’d expect from a
thoroughbred. His movement is
combined with a jump that would have
been good enough for him to have
pursued a career in pure show jumping.
He is by the great sire Jaguar Mail
(Hand in Glove xx – Laudanum xx)
– sire of European Champion Fischer
Takinou – out of a premium Anglo Arab
mare Utopie du Maury by the
leading AA sire Quatar du Plape – sire
of several international event horses and
show jumpers. His pedigree combines
thoroughbred blood on the sire line with
some of the most sought after Anglo
Arab lines on his dam line.
“His breeding is perfect for the modern
sport – he moves and jumps but has
masses of blood with it.”
“It is lovely to be able to carry on the
good work of Marie-Pierre and Patrick
Sisqueille his breeders, and Thomas,
and hopefully give him every chance to
succeed at 5* level.”
Competition Acumen
Tenareze is a charming horse who is
easy to handle. He is the consummate
professional and doesn’t get hot in an
event atmosphere. He is definitely a
favourite of long-term head groom
Jessica Errington who has looked after
him for the past 8 years.
“Taz is one of the easiest horses to deal
with at home and competition, he has
such a laid back nature and a great
temperament.”
Progeny
Owner Nigella Hall also has a part
share in one of his first foals bred in this
country, TENZ, who is stepping up to
Intermediate/3* level this year and is
showing similar promise and talent.
MANAGEMENT OF
FOALS LIMBS
Ed Lyall
BVetMed, CertEM (StudMed),
MRCVS
A horse is more likely to stay sound and
perform at a high level if it has good limb
conformation. When selecting a stallion
for your mare you will have looked at
the good and the bad attributes of your
mare and tried to pick a stallion that
will improve any faults that she may
have. There is a correlation between
limb conformation and predisposition
for lameness, for example very straight
upright hocks are a risk factor for hind
limb suspensory problems.
Once your foal is born it is important to
evaluate it’s limbs in the first 24 hours
after birth and make a plan as to how
much exercise the mare and foal can
have, experienced veterinary advice
should be sought at the foals first check
up. Foals can be born with limbs that
have very abnormal conformation and
over exercising can result in
irreversible damage that affects
soundness and performance later in life.
We are all excited to see our new-born
foals playing in the paddock as soon as
possible after birth, however in many
cases this is not a good idea and careful
consideration must be given before turn
out.
Ideally the first paddock a mare and foal
is allowed out in should be small and
well fenced. The surface should be
smooth and not rutted or poached.
Many mares will dash about when first
turned out and the foal then has to try
and keep up with her, this can result in
damage, such as to the delicate
sesamoid bones in the fetlock or
overloading of the soft square bones in
the hock. If your mare is likely to be lively
then putting her out hungry, so she is
keen to graze or even giving a low
dose of sedation, may stop the foal
being over exerted.
The various limb conformational
aberrations at birth are classified as
congenital, either flexural or angular
deformities. The flexural deformities are
where the bone column is straight from
front to back, but the limb is either too
flexed or too extended through a
particular joint. A very common flexural
deformity is where the deep digital flexor
tendon is too tight and the foal ends up
standing on the front of the hoof wall or
the very tip of it’s toe rather than the sole
of the hoof. These flexural deformities
can be corrected in the first 24-48 hours
by application of a light weight cast
and administration of a drug to relax the
muscles controlling the tendons.
Tendon laxity in the hind limbs resulting
in very low hind fetlock conformation
and the tip of the hoof lifting off the
ground is very common. Often the farrier
may need to trim the tip of the toe after a
few weeks as it does not get any wear.
There is much discussion as to whether
an extension should be applied to the
hoof that provides a long heel forcing the
toe on to the ground. I have never had
to use these extensions and I am always
very concerned that they may actually
damage the delicate soft tissue structures
of the limb.
Health Article - Limb Deformaties
Foal with hind slack tendons
The angular limb deformities are where
the limb deviates inwards (varus) or
outwards (valgus) through a joint when
viewed from the front. Many foals are
born with quite marked hind limb
deviations, often one hind limb has a
varus deviation through the hock and
the other limb has a valgus deviation
through the same joint making the foal
look like it's limbs have been blown by
the wind, you will have heard the term
“wind swept”. The vast majority of these
congenital angular limb deviations will
correct within a couple of weeks if the
foal is only allowed limited exercise.
Carpul varus
It is common practice to ask your farrier
to apply glue on hoof extensions to
correct angular limb deviations that
involve the fetlock joint. A varus or
inward deviation requires a lateral or
outside extension. Conversely a valgus
or outward deviation requires a medial
or inside extension. These are applied
within the first few days of the foals life
to the hoof and the foal is kept on a
relatively firm bed so that the mechanical
affect of the altered load on the growth
plates straightens the limb. Exercise must
be restricted until the limb is straight.
Foal toe extension
There is another limb deviation that is
very difficult to correct, this is where the
bone column is straight, however the
limb is rotated usually outwards from the
upper limb in the fore limb, giving the
foal a very toe out conformation and
action. Many such foals will correct with
time as they grow and develop.
Once the foal has developed to the point
that everyone is happy with the limb
conformation it should then have
exercise in a safe paddock with a good
level surface. It is as important for foals
to exercise, as it is for them to be rested
if their limbs are not straight. Exercise
stimulates the development of bone
density and also the necessary tendon
and ligament fibres required for these
soft tissues to stand up to the rigors of
equestrian sport later in life.
It is however important to keep a close
eye on your foals limbs as it is
developing, particularly when the
ground start to get hard in the middle
of the summer. Often foals will get foot
sore and as a consequence they pull
themselves up on to the tips of their toes,
off-loading the weight from the sore
soles of the hoof. The muscles contract,
the tip of the toe gets warm away and
an upright hoof conformation known
as a boxy foot develops - an acquired
flexural deformity. You may also have
heard the term “ballerina syndrome”, this
can ruin a foals future value and affect
it’s likelihood of staying sound in sport.
If you spot your foal becoming upright it
is important to get it in on a soft bed and
administer pain relief as directed by your
vet, the farrier may need to be involved
to perform corrective trims.
The hard ground and rapid growth rates
can also cause the growth plates at
the ends of the long bones to become
inflamed (physitis), particularly the distal
radial growth plate above the knee
and the growth plates either side of the
fetlocks. Physitis can cause disruption in
the lengthening of the bone and often
the growth becomes uneven across the
growth plate resulting in one side of the
limb growing faster than the other
bending the limb - an acquired angular
limb deviation develops. Again if this is
noted to be happening rest on a deep
bed and the administration of
anti-inflammatories and appropriate
intervention from the farrier may salvage
the situation.
There are some surgical procedures that
can be performed to correct foals limb
deviations, however we try very hard to
manage foals in such a way as to avoid
performing these procedures. Foals
that develop severe flexural deformities
involving a boxy foot may undergo an
operation to cut the check ligament of
the deep digital flexor tendon - I have
not had to have one of these done for
many years.
Occasionally we may need to help an
angular limb deviation correct, most
commonly the fetlock and carpal joints,
but occasionally the hock. There are
two types of procedures that can be
performed, the most simple is known as
a periosteal strip, this involves a small
skin incision over the growth plate on the
inside of the deviation (so for a fetlock
varus - the incision is on the inside of the
distal canon bone, the a carpal valgus
the incision is on the outside of the distal
radius), the periosteum on the bone
surface is lifted off the growth plate, this
speeds up the growth of the long bone
on the side of the incision relative to the
side of the bone not operated on and the
bone straightens as it grows.
The second procedure is more invasive
and is reserved for very severe angular
limb deviation. This involves stopping the
growth on the outside of the deviation
(so for a hock valgus - on the inside of
the hock, for a carpal varus the surgery
would be performed on the outside of
the radius). The growth can be stopped
by bridging across the growth plate,
usually by placing a screw through it.
This stops the growth on that side of the
bone, the opposite side continues to
grow and when the limb is straight the
screw is removed.
Xray of foal tarsal screw
In summary it is important to carefully
manage the amount of exercise
new-born foals are allowed to have,
also to carefully monitor how the foals
limbs are developing as they grow.
Standing them up on a firm level surface
and walking them up to observe their
limb flight is something worth doing
every 3 or 4 weeks during the foals first
few months of life. If in doubt consult an
experienced vet and your farrier.
Nutrition for
Colostrum and
Milk Quality
Emma Nissler BSc (Hons), Nutritional
Manager, Dodson & Horrell
Colostrum is the first milk that the mare
produces to feed her foal, typically
producing 2-5 litres within the first 12-24
hours after birth1. It is extremely
nutritious, with higher levels of fat,
protein, vitamins, minerals, and sugars
than her normal milk. Colostrum is
essential for the foal’s health and
wellbeing, as it provides passive
immunity via the provision of
immunoglobulins (also known as
antibodies) and acts as a laxative to
help the foal pass their first stool.
Colostrum also promotes intestinal
absorption of macromolecules and
provides leukocytes (white blood cells)
that act as protection in the neonatal
digestive tract2. Immunoglobulins are the
building blocks of proteins used by the
foal’s immune system to fight infection.
Unlike other species, immunoglobulins
are not transferred from the mare to the
foal during pregnancy due to the
characteristics of the placenta
(epitheliochorial). This means that the
foal is born with no infection-fighting
antibodies in their blood; therefore,
they are more susceptible to infection
caused by viruses and bacteria in the
environment. With this in mind, foals
must consume colostrum to receive the
immunoglobulins they need through
passive transfer. The foal’s digestive
system is permeable to complete protein
molecules, such as immunoglobulins, for
the first 24 hours of life. After the initial
24 hours, the foal’s digestive system
loses permeability, and so it is vital that a
newborn foal receives the colostrum well
within the first 24 hours (ideally within
6-8 hours). This maternal immunity
typically lasts 6-12 weeks, at which
point the foal’s immune system should
be functioning and producing its own
protection3.
Colostrum and milk quality is shown to
be directly affected by the nutrition of the
mare throughout gestation. It is important
to ensure broodmares are suitably fed,
maintaining a healthy body condition
by receiving appropriate nutrition in
accordance with her increased
requirements. Carefully monitoring the
mare throughout pregnancy and
lactation ensures neither excess weight
nor an unhealthy weight loss occurs,
using a weighbridge or weigh tape and
fat scoring every 2 weeks. During
lactation, energy requirements are
almost double compared to early
pregnancy or a mare at maintenance.
The increased energy demand is
associated with the body producing
milk4, and so early lactation is the time
of highest demand when the mare
produces large volumes of milk to
support her rapidly growing foal. As
well as an increase in energy, the mare’s
protein requirements triple compared to
requirements when not in foal. The mare’s
increased requirements for protein are
due to the vast amount of protein passing
to her milk. Broodmares are able to
convert approximately 35-40% of their
crude protein intake into milk protein,
depending on the protein quality, and
so sources of protein that are palatable
and contain a healthy balance of amino
acids are desirable. Raw materials such
as barley, oats and linseed are all high
in protein but are lacking one or more
essential amino acids. Soybean meal
contains all of the essential amino acids
required for health and development,
and is therefore, a useful protein for
broodmares. Lysine is the major limiting
amino acid as it is the most absent in
the horse’s diet, so ensuring the mares
ration contains sufficient levels of lysine is
desired. For a 500kg horse,
recommendations are for a minimum
intake of 34.3g per day during the final
3 months of gestation, and up to a
maximum of 84.8g per day during the
first 3 months of lactation4. If the mare
isn’t receiving sufficient protein
throughout gestation and during
lactation she will naturally mobilise her
own protein reserves, causing a loss of
muscular coverage and a decrease in
her milk production.
38 | BRITISH BREEDER

Feed Article - Dodson & Horrell
Alongside suitable energy and protein
sources, research indicates that
colostrum and milk quality can be
supported with additional
supplementation. Some studies have
examined the effect of vitamin and
mineral supplementation of pregnant
mares on the passive transfer of
immunoglobulins to neonatal foals, with
immunoglobulin G (IgG) used as an
indicator of passive immunity gained
from colostrum. Vitamin E is an
essential nutrient in support of the horse’s
immune system and is readily used within
breeding nutrition. Inadequate intake
during pregnancy and lactation can
have a direct effect, causing deficiency
in her foal from birth to one month of
age1. Studies have shown that
vitamin E supplementation supports an
increase in colostral and serum IgG
levels3, providing immune support for
both mare and foal. Minerals that are
vital for overall health include calcium
and phosphorus. Calcium supports the
skeletal system, and so during lactation
there is an increased demand to ensure
optimum growth and development of
the suckling foal. The NRC4 states that
calcium requirements for lactating mares
increase by 1.8-2.8 times above a horse
at maintenance, as well as phosphorus
requirements increasing by 1.7-2.7 times
maintenance. To ensure the correct
calcium to phosphorus ratio of 2:1,
choosing a specifically formulated feed,
tailored to breeding, is recommended.
is shown to be considerably higher in
vitamin E than preserved forages, and so
when less pasture is available,
researchers recommend supplementing
rations with vitamin E.
Ensuring good quality colostrum and
milk in broodmares can be daunting,
with many factors to consider. The quality
of the colostrum is vital for immunity of
the foal, whilst milk quality is vital for
postpartum growth and development.
Appropriate, well-balanced nutrition
of the broodmare that meets nutrient
demand is therefore important
throughout gestation and lactation.
Research indicates that supplementing
the mare with specific ingredients can
have a positive effect on the foal’s
intestinal health and absorption of
essential nutrients2. Selecting
scientifically formulated feeds
specifically tailored to the requirements
of breeding stock is the simplest way of
ensuring your foals have the best start
in life.
In addition to this, supplementing mares
with Saccharomyces Cerevisiae (yeast)
were shown to result in higher IgG
concentrations in foal serum, which
indicated that foals had improved
intestinal health and therefore, improved
absorption2. The intestinal microbiota in
early life stages can impact metabolic
health, growth, and behaviour. The foal’s
microbiome is shown to influence the
risk of resistance to internal parasites,
metabolic syndrome and colic
throughout their life5. There is also
evidence to show that colostral IgG
concentrations were increased in mares
that were supplemented with
beta-glucans for the final month of
gestation2.
Pasture is considered to be the most
desired source of forage for pregnant
and lactating mares. It provides an
improved source of energy, protein,
vitamins and minerals in comparison to
preserved forages such as hay. Although
it is a great source of nutrients in support
of broodmare health and milk quality,
pasture may not be available. During
the winter months grazing is sparse and
nutrient concentrations are low,
meaning they are consuming more
preserved hay and less pasture. Pasture
Vet Article - Dummy Foal Syndrome
Dummy Foal
Syndrome -
what is it and
how can it be
managed?
Figure 1: A foal showing mild signs of Dummy
Foal Syndrome with an abnormal tongue
position, and lack of awareness of the mare.
By Emily Floyd, BVSc,
DACVIM, MRCVS
Cause of the condition
‘Dummy Foal Syndrome’ (or Neonatal
Maladjustment Syndrome as it is also
known) is one of the most common
conditions to affect foals in the first few
days of life. Historically, the condition
has always been attributed to oxygen
deprivation at the time of foaling. This
can occur if the foal’s delivery is delayed
by a dystocia (for example if the foal is
malpositioned), if the placenta
separates prematurely, or the umbilical
cord gets crushed between the foal and
the pelvic brim. In these situations, the
supply of oxygen and nutrients to the
foal is interrupted. If this occurs for a
prolonged period of time (more than a
few minutes), the foal’s brain and other
organs can be damaged, sometimes
irreversibly. Foals that have experienced
significant oxygen deprivation usually
develop severe clinical signs, including
neurologic abnormalities and seizures,
renal failure and gastrointestinal tract
problems. Even with the highest level of
intensive care, many of these foals do
not survive.
Over the last few years we have
developed a better understanding of the
hormonal changes that occur in the foal
in late pregnancy and after birth, and
we have begun to understand that
abnormalities in the hormone pathways
are actually a much more common
cause of the condition than oxygen
deprivation. In late pregnancy, the foal
and placenta produce large amounts
of progesterone type hormones called
‘pregnanes’. These compounds have
many roles, including a sedative effect
which keeps the foal’s activity level
suppressed during late pregnancy and
foaling. After a foal is born, the foal’s
brain and adrenal gland rapidly start to
metabolise these compounds and
convert them into cortisol and other
substances. These changes are essential
substances. These changes are essential
for normal adaptation to life outside the
uterus. In a healthy foal, the levels of
these compounds drop to almost zero
shortly after birth. In a large subset of
‘dummy foals’, this process gets
interrupted, and pregnane levels fail to
decrease or continue to rise. This causes
the foal to revert to an ‘in utero’ state,
in which the foal is depressed with poor
organ function.
There are a number of causes of
hormonal dysfunction, which include in
utero infection, placental
abnormalities and an abnormal birth
event. The physical trigger or ‘squeeze’
at the time of foaling is an important
stimulus in the hormone pathways.
Figure 2: A foal with Dummy Foal Syndrome
receiving treatment with high flow nasal oxygen
which helps provide respiratory support.
Clinical signs
The clinical signs of Dummy Foal
Syndrome include sleepiness, failure to
nurse or recognise the mare, seizure-like
activity, abnormal muscle tone, poor
suck reflex, inability to regulate
temperature, poor digestion, poor
kidney function, colic, delayed passage
of meconium, and diarrhoea amongst
others. Many of the symptoms relate to
behaviours that would be normal if the
foal was still in the uterus and relying on
the placenta for life support.
Clinical signs can vary from very mild (a
foal that is slightly slow and takes longer
than normal to nurse the mare) to very
severe (a foal that is totally unresponsive
and demonstrating full body seizures).
Treatment
The good news is that the vast majority
of foals with the condition can recover
with good supportive care. For the most
mildly affected foals, this may be as
simple as helping the foal to stand and
find the udder to nurse. Other foals will
require a higher level of supportive care,
which may include circulatory support
with intravenous fluids and medications,
respiratory support with oxygen therapy
and nutritional support with a
combination of intravenous and oral
feeding. Anti-seizure drugs are often
required to control seizures. Valium
(diazepam) is commonly used.
Vet Article - Dummy Foal Syndrome
Valium (diazepam) is commonly used.
This drug seems to help reset the effects
of the high pregnane levels in the brain.
Another important treatment for
Dummy Foal Syndrome is the foal
squeeze. This is a technique which is
designed to recreate the physical
pressure of foaling, in an attempt to turn
on the important enzymes in the
hormone pathways. The procedure
should always be carried out in
conjunction with your vet, as not all
foals are suitable candidates. The
procedure is most suitable for foals with
early or mild stages of the disease. A
rope is fixed around the foal’s neck and
then wrapped twice around the chest
using half hitches. Firm pressure is then
applied to the rope. The foal should
then become floppy and lay down.
Firm pressure is maintained on the rope
for 20 minutes. Many foals will show
a dramatic improvement in the clinical
signs immediately afterwards and often
show a sudden increase in awareness of
the mare.
Can you prevent the
condition?
Preventing the condition can be difficult,
but good monitoring during pregnancy
Figure 3: The foal squeeze technique.
should enable mares with placental
problems to be identified and
appropriately treated. Any mare that is
showing signs of premature mammary
development or vulval discharge during
pregnancy should be carefully evaluated
to check for signs of placentitis. Mares
with a history of placentitis should be
monitored more closely during
pregnancy. Careful supervision at
foaling, and early identification of any
potential problems or foetal
malpositioning should help reduce the
possibility of oxygen deprivation
occurring.
What to do if you have
a foal showing signs of
Dummy Foal Syndrome
Early recognition and treatment of the
problem is the key to success. Any foal
showing any signs of the condition
should receive early treatment. Foals with
the condition are often slow to nurse, or
not able to latch on to the udder. Failure
of colostrum intake can quickly lead to
infection developing in the foal. Foals
also quickly become dehydrated with
low blood glucose levels. Early
veterinary treatment is often as simple
as supplementary colostrum, the foal
squeeze and protective antimicrobials.
Early veterinary examination will also
allow rapid identification of foals with
more serious problems. Rapid
hospitalisation of these foals improves
the likelihood of survival greatly. With
appropriate treatment 80-90% of these
foals survive. Foals that survive should
go on to develop normally and have full
athletic careers.
Classy British Bred Mare
Jalapeno III heads to
Badminton
Mare Feature
Jalapeno III
the exciting 15 year old British
Bred, Sports Horse of GB
registered mare. Bred by the
event rider Nick Gauntlett, owned
by Chris Stone, Ridden by Gemma
Stevens and by the former
Badminton winner Chilli Morning.
Jalapeno was bred out of a SHB(GB)
mare loaned by Nick Gauntlett called
Maiden Voyage who is by the successful
competition Thoroughbred sire, SHAAB.
Maiden Voyage also had another
daughter by Chilli Morning in 2010
called Morning Voyage.
If you progress back through the dam
line you see that each line has produced
an International Event horse competing
from old 1* to old 3*. Proving that as
always, a good mare line is imperative
for breeding good competition horses.
Jalapeno’s pedigree shows a high level
of Thoroughbred blood on both sire and
dam-side producing the ultimate event
horse in Jalapeno
When asked about Jalapeno, her
breeder Nick Gauntlett said
‘When I had Chilli Morning for
owner Chris Stone, I felt the best way
to promote him as a stallion - obviously
as well as him competing well - was to
breed our own foals by different Styles
of mares.
I ended up having Jalapeno’s dam
Maiden Voyage on loan. Having been
through the junior and young rider
programme at the same time as Lucy
Wiegersma and seeing her on quite a
few horses by Shaab - including Lucy’s
young rider horse shaaboo and her
Badminton runner up Shaabrak I jumped
at the chance to use a daughter of
Shaab with Chilli.
As it turns out it was a great combination.
The dam only competed in the show
ring so had no Eventing record but was
obviously well put together. A definite
prerequisite for us.
When Chilli left me to go to Mary (King)
, Chris bought Jalapeño and , I
understand, as he was doing some
business in Belgium at the time he sent
the mare to Karen Donckers to be produced.
A few years later she ended up
back with Gemma.
I am now on the council for Sport Horse
Breeding and campaigning for better
recognition for British Breeders and more
awareness of the British Bred horses. It
will be very special to see a horse that
we have bred at Badminton - she has
been an exceptional horse for Gemma
and it has been exciting to watch - if they
have a good weekend they could go
very very well.
Jalapeno has an impressive International
career competing all over Europe with 2
x WINS at CCI4*-S, multiple top 10
placings from 1* - 4*S & L with notable
results including 7th at Blenheim 4*L,
Won Millstreet 4*S, 2nd Bramham 4*L,
Won Lignieres 4*S.
She heads to Badminton in form with a
classy 8th place in the strongly contested
Burnham Market 4*S on the 14th April.
Jalapeno is a great success of well
thought out eventing breeding for
competition and conformation backed
up with good training to reach this high
level.
Wishing them all the success at
Badminton Horse Trials.
