Tenareze
Tenareze who is affectionately
known as Taz at home was bred
in France and started his eventing
career as a stallion and under the
tutelage of Thomas Carlile.
At the end of his 7 year old year, Harry
and his late father Richard Meade
visited Thomas Carlile to see Tenareze
as Harry was looking for a new ride for
long standing owner Nigella Hall and
they felt he ticked all the boxes. Prior to
joining Harry and in consultation with
Thomas, the decision was made to have
Tenareze gelded after collecting semen,
so his breeding legacy could continue
but Tenareze could focus on his
competitive career.
“Obviously some stallions can progress
to a high level but they have to have an
exceptional temperament, whereas Taz
always had one eye on the fairer sex!”
Event horses need a really thorough
education to succeed at the very top
level, and time to fully understand the
questions they are likely to face.
Consequently, on arrival in the UK
and no longer spending time at stud,
Tenareze dropped down a level to
ensure each building block was in place
as, although he had some top results, he
wasn’t always self-sufficient in his way
of going across country and also had a
suspicion of ditches. Harry took him
hunting, team chasing and schooled
around point-to-point courses to build
his confidence and slowly progressed
through the levels of eventing.
“We would jump ditches regularly, just
on a loose rein out of a walk in a very
nice, generous way, giving him a chance
to look, see, understand, accept and
jump, which has helped him overcome
his anxiety.”
This approach has benefitted Tenareze
who has had success at all levels of the
sport with top placings at 3* & 4*level,
including a 2nd place finish at Millstreet
4*Long. Last Autumn he successfully
completed his first 5* at Pau in
September 2022 and is aiming for
Badminton 2023.
