Jalapeno III
the exciting 15 year old British
Bred, Sports Horse of GB
registered mare. Bred by the
event rider Nick Gauntlett, owned
by Chris Stone, Ridden by Gemma
Stevens and by the former
Badminton winner Chilli Morning.
Jalapeno was bred out of a SHB(GB)
mare loaned by Nick Gauntlett called
Maiden Voyage who is by the successful
competition Thoroughbred sire, SHAAB.
Maiden Voyage also had another
daughter by Chilli Morning in 2010
called Morning Voyage.
If you progress back through the dam
line you see that each line has produced
an International Event horse competing
from old 1* to old 3*. Proving that as
always, a good mare line is imperative
for breeding good competition horses.
Jalapeno’s pedigree shows a high level
of Thoroughbred blood on both sire and
dam-side producing the ultimate event
horse in Jalapeno
When asked about Jalapeno, her
breeder Nick Gauntlett said
‘When I had Chilli Morning for
owner Chris Stone, I felt the best way
to promote him as a stallion - obviously
as well as him competing well - was to
breed our own foals by different Styles
of mares.
I ended up having Jalapeno’s dam
Maiden Voyage on loan. Having been
through the junior and young rider
programme at the same time as Lucy
Wiegersma and seeing her on quite a
few horses by Shaab - including Lucy’s
young rider horse shaaboo and her
Badminton runner up Shaabrak I jumped
at the chance to use a daughter of
Shaab with Chilli.

As it turns out it was a great combination.
The dam only competed in the show
ring so had no Eventing record but was
obviously well put together. A definite
prerequisite for us.
When Chilli left me to go to Mary (King)
, Chris bought Jalapeño and , I
understand, as he was doing some
business in Belgium at the time he sent
the mare to Karen Donckers to be produced.
A few years later she ended up
back with Gemma.
I am now on the council for Sport Horse
Breeding and campaigning for better
recognition for British Breeders and more
awareness of the British Bred horses. It
will be very special to see a horse that
we have bred at Badminton - she has
been an exceptional horse for Gemma
and it has been exciting to watch - if they
have a good weekend they could go
very very well.
Jalapeno has an impressive International
career competing all over Europe with 2
x WINS at CCI4*-S, multiple top 10
placings from 1* - 4*S & L with notable
results including 7th at Blenheim 4*L,
Won Millstreet 4*S, 2nd Bramham 4*L,
Won Lignieres 4*S.
She heads to Badminton in form with a
classy 8th place in the strongly contested
Burnham Market 4*S on the 14th April.
Jalapeno is a great success of well
thought out eventing breeding for
competition and conformation backed
up with good training to reach this high
level.
