Studbook News - IDHS (GB)
The purebred ID is a foundation animal.
It has stamina, robust and correct
conformation, athletic movement and a
kind, forgiving temperament. A TB
stallion on a ID mare created the
legendary half-bred Irish hunter, famous
around the world for its ability to get the
rider out of trouble by finding a ‘fifth leg’.
Both the purebred ID and the Irish Sport
Horse make superb hunters.
These characteristics make the breed
suitable for amateur and professional
alike. From the current HOYS
Heavyweight Hunter Champion, to
Lenamore and Headley Britannia who
won Burghley, to Jumbo, the sire of
countless event horses, to wonderful
police horses, this is a versatile breed.
We remember showjumpers like
Boomerang, Buttevant Boy, Cruising and
The Rock. Then there are carriage horses,
like the Windsor Greys bred by our late
Queen. There are countless horses
competing in Riding Club events
throughout the UK and there are even
some competing in dressage up to
Grand Prix level..
Many modern 5* event horses, like Mr
Chunky and International show
jumpers like the stallion Billy Congo,
carry ID blood. While the cross with
athletic European breeds has proved
extremely successful at top level, there
is a growing demand for the Traditional
Irish Horse (TIH). The TIH carries only a
mixture of Irish Draught, TB or
Connemara blood. The part bred ID is
enjoying a resurgence as riders seek the
horse with the right temperament and
type for them.
Either way, the versatile Irish Draught is a
horse for all seasons and all disciplines.
Please visit our Facebook page and our
website www.idhsgb.org.uk, where you
will find lists of all our
inspected Purebred and Irish Draught
Sport Horse (25% minimum proven ID
blood) stallions. There are details of
affiliated shows, how to register horses
and obtain a passport. There are also
links to the various working groups within
the Society, with phone numbers and
email addresses.
