The SHB(GB) Breeders trophy
Each year at the AGM we present the
fabulous Breeders Trophy to highlight the
achievements of someone we believe
has made a difference to British
breeding. This year the trophy was
presented to Carolyn Bates the owner of
the late and great stallion Jumbo. While
much has been written by this super
stallion we thought it was time Carolyn
was presented with a trophy to
highlight the achievements of the colt that
she bought at Malvern sales in 1984.
It is that astonishing that 35 years have
passed since his first offspring was
registered with SHB(GB) and yet they
are still competing and winning. His
genes are still much evident in British
breeding which is why we feel he is
a worthy winner. Even at this year’s
Badminton his presence is felt in both
the bloodlines of competition horses
and stallions taking part in the SHB(GB)
parade.
Bred by Archie Smith-Maxwell Jumbo by
the leading Irish Draught sire Skippy was
born in 1984. He was acquired as a colt
foal weanling by Carolyn who owned
him thereafter till his death in 2015. Aged
five his own talent came to the fore when
he won the Masterlock ‘potential
dressage horse’. Ridden by Andrew
Nicholson at seven-years-old he won
the young horse trophy at Le Lions and
completed Boekelo 3* in 15th place.
He then competed in showjumping with
William Funnell and dressage with Lizzie
Murray before concentrating on stud
duties and turning out for the occasional
stallion parade and even a turn in a
Christmas pantomime.
“He turned out to be my once in a
lifetime horse and has been a huge part
of my life and I am immensely proud
and privileged to have owned him,” said
Carolyn.
other societies
• He is the leading all-time sire
of horses registered with British
Eventing – having sired at least 416
• His stock is not just limited to
eventing; the mare Vulcanite was the
winner of the 2016 Working Hunter
Champion at Royal Windsor
• He has featured in the World
Breeding Federation for Sport
Horses (WBFSH) leading sire
rankings since 2008. His current
standing is 16th.
Other News
Dates for stallion and mare gradings are
currently being planned in the office.
Grading your mare means her offspring
will be eligible for SHB(GB) studbook
papers (providing the sire is registered
either with SHB(GB) or another official
breed society). The owners of mares
achieving Head Studbook status will
receive a voucher for free foal
registration and the three highest marked
mares at the end of the year will receive
SHB(GB) stud vouchers. For all rules and
regulations on grading and other issues
visit the downloads page on the website.
We are always seeking suitable venues
for mare and foal gradings. We need
an enclosed space to allow mares and
foals to run free, some space for parking
and would prefer to have at least four
mares to grade on the day. If you would
like to host a grading or need to speak to
someone on any other matter
concerning breeding contact Laura.
