One bitterly cold day <strong>in</strong> the first week of January 2010, the<br />

writer, playwright and former president of the Czech Republic,<br />

Vaclav Havel, and two fellow dissidents walked down a<br />

snow-edged street <strong>in</strong> Prague to deliver a letter to the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />

Ambassador. They rang the bell several times. No one came<br />

to the door, so they left their letter <strong>in</strong> the letterbox.<br />

letter from Havel and his friends, co-signatories of Charter<br />

77, requested a fair and open trial for Liu Xiaobo, who<br />

had been sentenced to 11 years <strong>in</strong> <strong>prison</strong> on December 25,<br />

2009: “We are conv<strong>in</strong>ced that this trial and harsh sentence<br />

meted out to a … prom<strong>in</strong>ent citizen of your country merely<br />

for th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and speak<strong>in</strong>g critically about various political<br />

and social issues, was chiefly meant as a stern warn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to others not to follow his path.”<br />

Havel’s gesture on behalf of a fellow writer illustrates<br />

exactly the spirit of <strong>PEN</strong> International (from its found<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1921) and the k<strong>in</strong>d of action taken by the Writers<br />

<strong>in</strong> Prison Committee. Havel (1979) and Liu (2009) are<br />

both emblematic cases <strong>in</strong> WiPC’s year-long campaign<br />

celebrat<strong>in</strong>g 50 years <strong>in</strong> <strong>PEN</strong> International of defend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

freedom of expression.<br />

Freedom of expression has always been a l<strong>in</strong>chp<strong>in</strong> of<br />

<strong>PEN</strong> International. Concerns for colleagues im<strong>prison</strong>ed,<br />

executed, tortured through times of war, peace, revolution,<br />

and détente took the form of speeches at congresses,<br />

resolutions, letters of support, telegrams to offend<strong>in</strong>g
