An even skin tone is one of 

the trademarks of a youthful 

complexion. Still, many of us 

suffer from skin pigmentation 

issues such as patchy, blotchy 

skin. Here are the common 

causes of skin pigmentation 

problems: 

GENETIC 

Everyone‘s skin is unique which 

is why the melanin intensity of 

pigmentation or discolouration 

can vary in individuals. 

HORMONAL IMBALANCES 

These can interfere with the 

melanin levels in the skin and can 

cause some areas to discolour or 

darken. These hormonal changes 

can start to appear during 

puberty or during pregnancy, as 

well as during the menopause. 

Even high stress levels or certain 

medications can cause skin 

sensitivity to light, which may 

then lead to an uneven skin tone. 

SKIN AGEING 

The inevitable process of skin 

ageing can cause a mottled 

effect on the skin irrelevant 

of ethnicity and gender. Free 

radicals in the environment can 

lead to premature skin ageing 

with loss of elasticity and 

discolouration causing age spots. 

These damaging radicals are 

responsible for breaking down the 

skin’s protective barrier, natural 

collagen and can even destroy 

healthy skin cells. 

So what can be done to eliminate 

skin pigmentation problems 

and return to a youthful, even 

complexion without recourse to 

invasive treatments? 

LIFESTYLE CHANGES 

The skin is the largest living 

organ and the organ that is 

the most visible, so it’s very 

important to look after it by 

taking care of your body. A good 

healthy diet, with plenty of fruit 

and vegetables and very little 

or no processed food, as well 

as regular exercise are the first 

steps. 

USE SPF PROTECTION 

It’s very important to protect your 

skin from the damaging effects 

of the often hidden UV rays. Try 

and avoid the midday sun and

CHOOSE YOUR SKINCARE 

PRODUCTS CAREFULLY 

Always read the ingredients 

on the packaging very 

carefully. Often products with 

hydroquinone (a bleaching 

ingredient) promise a brighter 

and a more even skin complexion. 

However, these products can 

eliminate one problem in the 

short term and then create other 

skin issues in the long term. 

Hydroquinone, or its derivatives, 

can cause damage to the deeper 

layers of the skin, thinning it and 

making it light sensitive, thereby 

creating a deeper and darker 

appearance to the skin in the 

long run. In fact, any product that 

states you must stay out of the 

daylight whilst applying it should 

be avoided for that reason. 

Skincare products that contain 

well balanced natural skin 

brightening ingredients, vitamins 

and effective plant extracts, 

and without any added harmful 

chemicals, will help to prevent 

and reverse skin damage 

responsible for uneven skin tone, 

as well as protect the skin from 

environmental damage. 


There are a few skincare products 

that also contain 24 carat 

colloidal gold, which is an extra 

bonus for the skin. Gold acts as 

a barrier against these harmful 

environmental factors that damage 

the DNA of skin cells. It also

How to Let Go of the Pain 

That’s Running Your Life

Administration) from INSEAD. He began his career in 

banking and management consultancy, in London and 

Chicago, and worked in sales and marketing in the UK

which made his intuition much stronger and enabled 

him to move into executive search. He has lived and 

worked in France, Belgium and the USA, and speaks 

French, German and Spanish.

THE THREE STEPS OF LETTING GO 

Letting go involves three steps: 

1. The first step is to let go of the thoughts that keep 

us stuck. These include stories, labels, judgements, 

expectations, comparisons, opinions, conclusions, 

and so on. 

2. The second step is to let go of the pain that’s 

running your life. What happened in the past is 

generating thousands of negative thoughts now. I’ll 

come back to this topic shortly. 

3. The third step is to let go completely. Another word 

for this is surrender. Please note that this is not the 

same as giving up. When we surrender, we tune into 

something far more intelligent than our individual 

brains. 

Let’s zoom in on the second step – letting go of the 

pain that’s running your life. In order to do this, we 

need to look inwards. One way is to ask ourselves 

two questions: 

1. What do I want to happen in my life that isn’t 

happening now? 

2. What keeps happening even though I don’t want it 

to happen? 

Most of us have several answers to these two 

questions. In short, we have trouble manifesting what 

we want, and we keep manifesting things we don’t 

want. 

STRUGGLING TO MANIFEST WHAT YOU WANT 

Books such as The Secret and The Law of Attraction 

have gone some way to solving this problem, by 

encouraging us to be clear about what we want to 

happen and focus on that. However, most of us still 

struggle to manifest what we want, so what’s going 

on? 

I found the answer when I met SPH Sri Nithyananda 

Paramashivam – known to his followers as Swamiji 

– in India in 2014. He said, “We manifest our beliefs, 

not our desires.” If we look inwards, we can see that 

there’s a big gap between our beliefs and our desires, 

which is why things don’t happen the way we want. 

We have beliefs such as “I’m a failure” or “Life 

doesn’t give me what I want”. We may not even be 

aware of these beliefs. Then we’re upset when our 

beliefs become reality. 

THE SOLUTION IS WITHIN YOUR GRASP 

Fortunately, Swamiji has provided a solution in the

form of The Science of Completion SM . It boils down to a simple instruction: 

“re-live to relieve”. You can start working on this now. 

HOW TO RE-LIVE TO RELIEVE 

Look inwards and notice what’s disturbing you. How do you feel? For 

example, you may feel that life is unfair. Now look back over your life and 

find the earliest time you can remember being treated unfairly. This incident 

is likely to have been in your early childhood and left you feeling powerless. 

The next step is to look at yourself in a mirror. Become a small child again, 

with the way you saw things at that age – not the way you see things now. 

Intensely re-live that experience by talking aloud to yourself in the mirror 

– at least five times. Re-live the incident as a small child and allow all the 

suppressed emotions to come out. 

HOW TO DEAL WITH SEEING YOURSELF AS A FAILURE 

Now let’s apply the same technique to “I’m a failure”. Look back over your 

life and find the earliest time when you felt like a failure. This will be an 

incident that left you feeling powerless. Intensely re-live that experience by 

talking aloud to the person in the mirror – at least five times. Experience the 

incident as a small child and allow all the suppressed emotions to come out. 

It’s like squeezing pus out of a wound, which then heals. If we re-live each 

painful incident over and over again, the pain gradually leaves our bodies. 

Swamiji helps us to do this. 

Eventually, we no longer see life as unfair or see ourselves as failures. 

Then we can replace each old, negative belief with a powerful cognition. 

In my case, I’ve replaced “Life doesn’t give me what I want” with “Life 

keeps blessing me giving me what I want”. That belief is constantly being 

manifested, most recently with the success of The Power of Letting Go and 

the publication of Learn to Let Go – a Guided Journal.

the Irish Polo team & a fifth generation polo player, 

who will be playing at Chestertons Polo in the Park

What are you looking forward to most 

about Polo In The Park this year? 

The location, with Chestertons Polo in 

R 

the Park being in the heart of London 

and within Hurlingham Park is definitely 

the factor that excites me the most about 

the polo festival. Being able to play in 

London and within Hurlingham Park, 

where technically the sport was developed 

years ago and seeing it now progress into 

hosting the largest polo event in the world, 

it’s incredible. The atmosphere it brings is 

exciting for all involved and I’m looking 

forward to entertaining the crowds that join 

us in celebrating the sport. 

What do you believe are the most 

P 

important qualities or personality traits 

for each position on a polo team? 

I think in terms of personality traits it’s 

R 

pretty simple. On a team you have your 

attack, your midfield and your defence. The 

defensive players tend to be the physically 

stronger players on the field that I suppose 

can be slightly more conservative. Then you 

have the midfield that are very skillful and 

always looking to link up and connect the 

play between the rest of their teammates. 

In terms of personality traits I suppose this 

makes the midfielders more generous. For 

the attacking players I would say they have 

to be very optimistic and ambitious but can 

almost be perceived as selfish in terms of 

ball play. However, the attacking play is 

always very exciting to watch. 

Do you have any rituals or

superstitions that you have before a big 

game? 

Personally, no I am not no 

R 

superstitious. Before a big game I like 

to arrive an hour and half before the game 

starts. Preparation is key for me. Ensuring 

the horses are prepared and ready for the 

game is crucial and a key focus for all 

teams. Preparing the horses for the matches 

takes months, I like to make sure the team 

I am playing with is well prepared and that 

themselves and their horses are in good 

order and ready. 

How do you balance individual 

P 

performance with team success when 

playing polo? 

It’s a team game first and foremost. If

you don’t have a team that functions 

together then genuinely the team play won’t 

work well and games won’t be won. Every 

person within the team has a set job and 

contributes important different factors to 

game play. Whether that’s defending, goal 

scoring or supporting the game flow. I don’t 

think any team can win off one player, it 

must always be a joint effort. 

Do you remember a particularly

challenging game you’ve played. How 

did you overcome the difficulties? 

Playing the Royal Windsor Finals 

R 

in 2021 against some of the best 

young talents the sports ever produced. 

We were defending a lead and they were 

coming back very nearly beating us but we 

overcame it through sheer will and team 

work and belief, and belief in each other. 

What are some of the most memorable 

P 

venues where you’ve played polo, and 

what makes them stand out? 

I have been very lucky with my line 

R 

of work and how it has allowed me to 

travel to many places. Playing in Palermo, 

Buenos Aires and Lima, Peru are both very 

memorable locations and venues in which I 

have played.

What is the most rewarding aspect of 

playing polo for you? 

Definitely the relationship with the 

R 

horse, the opportunity to work with 

horses on a day to day basis and seeing 

them thrive and improve is the biggest 

reward for me. Following that, when you 

win a tournament surrounded by your 

friends, family and teammates it’s a very 

special moment. 

How has your training and preparation 

P 

evolved over the years as you’ve gained 

more experience? 

I personally think it’s improved 

R 

hugely, when I first started playing as 

a professional almost 20 years ago player 

fitness was not at the forefront of the game. 

Now this has changed and player fitness is 

at the forefront of teams agenda, players are 

training on a day to day basis ensuring they 

are at their peak fitness. Fitness combined

with the focus on improving polo skills and preparing 

the horses and having a set routine has really helped 

my training and preparation evolve as this allows

trainer, would you like your children to follow 

in your footsteps? Have they shown an interest in the 

sport and/or your ponies? 

There is zero pressure for either of my daughters

to follow in my footsteps. Although it would be 

a lot of fun if they did wish to follow in my footsteps. 

They have both shown interest in horses from a 

young age but we will see how that goes. 

What advice would you give to someone who

wants to get involved in the sport of polo, either 

as a player or a spectator? 

My advice would be, don’t hesitate. Don’t

hesitate to ever go to watch a polo game, or 

walk up to a polo player to chat to them or be a part 

of the polo commuinity. I always think you never 

know unless you try. With there being so many 

opportunities to be a part of a polo school and the 

ever growing polo communities I would always 

encourage people to get involved. The lifestyle polo 

playing brings is incredible, good weather, social 

aspects and being a part of the team and a big family 

and friendly environment are some of the highlights I 

would say.

How has technology and innovation impacted 

the sport of polo? 

I would say the biggest factor that technology 

R 

and innovation has had on the sport is how much 

it has been televised and how that has improved over 

the years. It’s given people more access to the sport, 

to watch it, to learn it and also elevate the level of 

polo and the teams that currently exist. That’s been 

the biggest thing in terms of the actual sport itself; 

there are a few technicalities which have changed 

over the years. Such as the helmets, this is a huge 

factor that’s changed and definitely for the better. The 

helmets have become much safer for riders and are 

still continuing to improve. 

Those would be the main two things but at the end 

of the day the sport is played on a grass field, with 

horses, and 8 people. I wouldn’t say technology or 

engineering has improved those things, it’s more just 

the sport has evolved and improved through human 

skill, fitness of the horses, and players being better 

prepared. 

What are some of the biggest challenges facing 

P 

the polo industry today, and how do you think 

they can be addressed? 

I think the number one biggest challenge facing 

R 

the polo industry today would be the access to 

the sport. The cost of living and upkeep of horses 

is becoming a huge issue in the industry. Playing at 

a low level the cost is more affordable, but as soon 

as you get to the higher levels the costs increase 

considerably. Keeping horses is expensive so as an 

industry we need to think of ways of how we manage 

that and how we can give more people access to this 

and being a part of the industry. 

However, there are many opportunities to still be a 

part of the industry, whether that’s through career 

opportunities, whether that’s working on the admin 

side or looking after the horses, training horses, 

players personal fitness trainers - there are many 

different ways for people to be involved.

What sport do you think you would be 

passionate about if you hadn’t chosen polo? 

Well I was and still am passionate about rugby, I

thought about becoming a professional player at 

one point, other than that it would be horse racing.

What charities are dear to your heart? 

A particular charity that is close to my heart is

the men’s mental health charity, James’ Place, 

and then any environmental charity I would always 

look to support and have a strong interest in being 

part of their movement.

HOW TO COOK THE PERFECT 

BARBECUE THIS SUMMER 

Dan Cooper, Head Grill Master at Weber, shares his top tips and tricks on 

how to cook a perfect barbecue menu and ways you can be ready for 

impromptu grilling this summer 

LIGHT YOUR BARBECUE 

CORRECTLY 

The process for lighting a 

barbecue depends on the type you 

have. 

If you’re lighting a charcoal 

barbecue, use specialist lighting 

aids, such as lighter cubes and a 

chimney starter. These products 

are designed to get your solid fuel 

to the right temperature as easily 

and quickly as possible. 

If you have a gas barbecue, you 

just need a propane gas bottle, 

sometimes known as patio gas. 

Compared to charcoal, gas grills 

are easier to light, but getting the 

process right is important. 

This is the best way to light your 

gas barbecue: 

1. First, open the lid, then the gas 

cylinder valve. 

2. Turn the front/first controller 

to ‘high’ and wait two to three 

seconds for the gas to accumulate 

in the ignition chamber. 

3. Next, press the igniter button. 

The burner should start burning 

immediately the first or second 

time you press it. As soon as the 

first burner heats up, turn the 

following burners to ‘high’ too. 

4. Now close the lid and preheat 

the barbecue to the desired 

temperature. Gas barbecues 

usually take around 10-15 minutes 

to heat up. 

5. Finally, place your food on the 

cooking grates and adjust the 

gas dials to hit the temperature 

specified in the recipe and 

required for the cooking method. 

Lastly, lighting an electric 

barbecue is simple. Just plug the 

barbecue into a socket, turn the 

controller to ‘high’, and let it heat 

up for 15 minutes with the lid on. 

ALWAYS PREHEAT YOUR 

BARBECUE 

Always preheat your barbecue to 

a desired cooking temperature; 

placing food on a cold barbecue 

will never deliver perfect sear 

marks and smoky flavour, and 

you’re more likely to leave your 

food on the barbecue for too long. 

You’ll also create more work for 

yourself with a trickier clean-up 

process, since a cold barbecue can 

lead to food sticking to the grate. 

Preheating doesn’t take long and is 

definitely worth the wait. 

BARBECUE WITH THE LID 

DOWN 

Weber barbecues are designed for 

lid-on cooking. This controls the 

temperature and allows the food 

to cook evenly and ensures smoke 

circulates inside the grill and 

infuses into the food, enhancing 

that barbecue flavour. In addition, 

keeping the lid shut means food is 

juicer, and it cooks faster, saving 

both time and fuel. 

SELECT THE RIGHT COOKING 

METHOD 

There are three main cooking 

methods. It’s essential to use the 

right method for each type of food 

you’re grilling. 

The direct cooking method is 

when food is placed directly over 

the heat and is ideal for dishes that 

take less than 15 minutes to cook, 

or that need a nice sear, such as 

steaks and burgers. 

The indirect cooking method is 

where food is not placed directly 

over the heat. The food will 

cook “indirectly” with the heat 

circulating around your food, 

perfect for items that take longer 

than 30 minutes to cook, such as a 

roast. 

The 50/50 cooking method uses a 

combination of direct and indirect 

cooking; and should be used for 

food that takes between 15-30 

minutes, such as thicker steaks 

and large meat cuts, as well as 

sausages. 

HOW TO BE BBQ READY FOR 

IMPROMPTU GRILLING 

1. If it is the first BBQ of the 

season, take time to give your grill 

a deep clean. 

2. Make sure you always have dry 

charcoal or a full gas bottle. 

3. Investing in a meat thermometer 

is a great way to give you more 

confidence in your grilling. There 

is a great range on the market, 

from a standard one to some that 

link with your smartphone via an 

app, like Weber Connect. 

4. Try positioning your barbecue 

in an easily accessible place. I have 

mine near the back door, meaning 

I’m more likely to use it. 

5. Remember, your barbecue is 

as much an outdoor oven as it is a 

grill, so be adventurous; you could 

try smoking some fish to grilling 

some lovely seasonal veggies as an 

alternative to meat.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH 

COFFEE BEANS TO CHOOSE? 

I always recommend starting 

with freshly roasted coffee, 

within a week of roasting, for the 

fullest aromatic experience, the 

best flavour characteristics and 

maximum smoothness! 

To choose the right coffee, 

you must first ask yourself the 

following questions that will 

help you define your priority and 

narrow down the incredibly wide 

choice out there. 

ROAST LEVEL 

Firstly – what roast level do you 

usually prefer? It’s like asking in 

wine tasting whether you prefer 

red, rose or white – this will help 

guide the choice. 

The rule of thumb is the darker 

you go, the lower the perceived 

acidity but the higher the 

bitterness. 

Generally, for espresso, we 

suggest the beans be a little bit 

more developed in their roast, 

and for drip and immersion 

preparations the choice can be as 

you wish. 

TASTE & ACIDITY 

Next, it’s about going into the 

core of the coffee taste, from 

full bodied all the way to milder 

beans. The level of acidity is 

an important part of the taste 

as well – the higher the coffee 

is grown, which is dependent 

on the temperature of the given 

climate, the more acidity and 

flavour precursors the beans will 

have as the maturation time is 

greater. For coffee grown on a 

lower elevation, the opposite will 

be the case, which usually results 

in sweet, soft, nutty and toasted 

flavours, with lower acidity. 

PROCESSING 

Then, there’s the processing. 

With all the experimental 

processing that’s taken place in 

the past few years it can be hard 

for consumers to keep up, but 

this is my condensed guide to 

understanding which processes 

lead to which flavours. 

Natural processing: this means 

more body, usually fruity and 

more concentrated in flavour 

with higher intensity. 

Fully washed: this results in very 

clean and ‘bright’ flavours. 

Honey and semi washed: black 

honeys mean more of a fruity 

flavour, with yellow honey 

resembling more of a washed 

coffee. 

Anaerobic natural: this results in 

more of a sour taste, as you lose 

the terroir and the focus switches 

to strength in the fruity aromas 

and flavours. 

Anaerobic washed: this is a touch 

milder but results in candy-like 

fruity aromas and flavours. 

Wet hulled: this creates full 

bodied, spicy flavours, including 

notes of exotic wood wood with a 

fresh tobacco element. These can 

be very complex and imposing. 

HOW DO DIFFERENT COFFEE 

BEANS TASTE? 

To pick what is right for you, you 

need to start by breaking coffee 

down into “structure“, based 

on the following three general 

categories: 

Full bodied and bold: Sumatra, 

Uganda, Roasting Plant Blend 


Mild and sweet: Mexico, Colombia, Brazlilan, Peru 

Bright and balanced: Ethiopian and Guatemalan 

From there, you can narrow down further based on 

the flavour notes. Each of our blends has an in depth 

description to make clear the individual flavour 

preferences for our customers, and our in-store team 

helps every customer discover the exciting spectrum 

of flavours our specialty beans have to offer. 

In store, customers can also mix up to four single 

origins to create their own personal blend, so their 

coffee experience is exactly how they like it best. 

WHAT’S BETTER TO BUY FOR MAKING COFFEE 

AT HOME – GROUND OR WHOLE BEAN COFFEE? 

Buying fresh, just-roasted, whole bean coffee is 

always the better option. Approximately 10 days after 

roasting, coffee can lose 70% of its aromas, which 

leads to the coffee becoming stale and vapid. Beyond 

this time, exposure to oxygen turns the natural oils 

rancid and creates that bitter taste, so we’d always 

recommend purchasing just-roasted coffee and 

consuming it within 7-10 days for optimal flavour. 

The reason whole beans are better, is that they trap 

the CO2 and aromas inside, so the moment you grind, 

you create millions of pathways for the trapped gases 

and aromas to escape, launching the staling process. 

Sealing all of the precious gas in (or as much of it as 

possible) until the last moment of grinding before you 

make your coffee is critical, in order to make a lush 

and creamy crema, which seals in the all important 

aromas and flavours of the espresso. 

Based on this, it’s safe to say that a vast majority of 

pre-ground coffee has already become vapid , so save 

yourself the trouble of drinking poor tasting coffee 

by buying whole beans and trying out Roasting Plant 

(we promise you won’t regret it). 

HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT CUP OF COFFEE 

Once you’ve picked your favourite coffee beans, the 

next step is knowing how to make the perfect cup of 

coffee at home. 

Again, it goes back to the all-important fresh roasted 

coffee beans – just-roasted high quality beans if you 

want to make the perfect cup of coffee. Once you 

have your coffee, make sure it’s stored in dry, dark 

and airtight conditions to keep it at its best. 

For a good cup of your fresh, just-roasted coffee from 

well-stored beans, it’s important to have the gear to 

extract them properly – I personally love manual 

grinders. For those who would rather leave it to tech, 

there are plenty of electric grinders out there, but it’s 

best to opt for a higher quality grinder rather than 

getting the cheapest option to make sure it lasts and 

does the best job possible. 

If, like me, you like changing your way of preparing 

coffee every day, for hot coffee you can try filter 

style – there are endless preparation method options 

out there, especially with paper filters. They will 

elegantly make a more pristine cup of coffee, by 

removing any type of sediment and retaining more 

of the oils – they bring out vibrancy, highlighting the 

brighter aromatics. 

Using a Chemex, for example whilst using the 

Ethiopian origin, will elevate its sweet, tropical 

fruit and delicate floral flavours. Using a Kalita 

for Guatemala or Peru will create a more citric, 

bright and refreshing result, and the sweet and floral 

Mexican origin in a v60 is a must try. 

I personally like my natural processed coffees like 

our Ugandan Rwenzori, our Sumatran wet hulled 

and any deeply chocolatey, caramelly and spicy 

coffees that may have fuller body to be prepared in a 

french press that will have more rich, deep, heavier 

mouthfeel.

Having celebrated its 40th anniversary last year with a stellar line-up including The 

Script, Craig David, Jack Savoretti and Katherine Jenkins, Henley Festival returns to 

the stunning Thames riverside from 5th to 9th July 2023 with five unmissable summer
