Annual Report
July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022
A Message From CEO Dr. Joseph T. Birli
Greetings, Bethany Friends.
As we complete another year having endured the remnants of COVID that continue to add to the many
life changes for everyone, the youth and Team Members of Bethany Children’s Home have exhibited
resiliency and perseverance in the 159th year of our existence. Not even a pandemic will keep us down
because we are Bethany Strong. As we approach our 160th year of operating programs and services
toward helping children heal from unfortunate traumas and abuse at the hands or circumstances beyond
their control, we have become stronger through adversity and challenges.
Yet, despite COVID, we have maintained a strong financial foothold of remaining debt free while managing youth census for
health and safety purposes with limited, dedicated Team Members. Recruitment and retention of such exceptional Team Members
has been a priority over the past year and continues to be into the next. Bethany has committed to renew and has been granted the
federal $6 million grant to serve the Helping Hands unaccompanied children for another 3 years.
Furthermore, with the pandemic, many organizations like Bethany have encountered losses of programs or decrease in services;
therefore, we have observed increased needs and answered the call from numerous counties for the urgent need of emergency
shelter space for youth at immediate risk of abuse and neglect. It is our hope to begin offering emergency shelter services in our
26-bed Henning facility in the new year, however, this is all dependent on the challenges with the workforce demands.
So, I implore, anyone that may have interest or know of someone with the gifts of humility, passion, and relational people skills,
that desires to make an impact on young lives, please refer them to Bethany. But more importantly, if you or someone you know
desires to have your life impacted by working with the exceptional youth of Bethany, please apply. This year we are offering
exceptional employee benefits to include 4.5 weeks of vacation time and individual employee health care coverage with no
premium charge to the employee. These employee benefits are unheard of in the nonprofit sector, let alone in this day and age, but
we must remain competitive and strive to be an employer of choice.
Finally, I realize this may be a strange plea in a letter for an annual report, but we have been in strange times that require every
communication to represent our needs. Therefore, I believe it is important to take every opportunity to express those needs
while sharing the exceptional work taking place on our campus and beyond. Thank you for your continued support, generosity,
thoughts, and prayers.
For the children and youth that are rejected, abandoned, wounded, abused, and neglected, seeking safety and healing, you are
making a difference!
Respectfully,
Dr. Joseph Birli
President/ CEO

Bethany Springs, LLC
In 2012, Bethany Home formed Bethany Springs, LLC. Bethany Springs is a for-profit entity of Bethany Home.
Bethany Springs sells fresh spring water from Bethany’s mountain property to DS Waters. The revenue generated from sales
helps support Bethany’s therapeutic services.
On a daily basis, an average of 12 tankers holding 8,000 gallons of water visit Bethany Springs. Our well currently is
pumping 40 gallons per minute of fresh spring water. It takes 20 minutes to fill a tanker truck.
Bethany Children’s Home offers several different program
options designed to meet the unique needs and goals of
each young person who resides here.
The Emergency Shelter, designed for no longer than
30 days, offers a safe place while next steps and future
placement options are explored by the youth and the
county.
Another option is the Short-Term program. This is
typically a 90-day program designed to promote the
development of healthy family relationships and subsequent
reunification in the community.
The Intensive and Residential programs offer support
and services to youth while they work on emotional
regulation, social skills and basic life skills. Youth in these
programs are usually residents at Bethany for at least six
months, and most youth eventually work through these
programs towards a less structured setting, like Bethany’s
Independent Living program.
This program is geared toward youth ages 16-20 who have
The team at Bethany Children’s Home provides a supportive
environment to promote growth and healing. Bethany
takes a unique approach to healing. We realize all youth
do not respond to one specific therapeutic process. We
offer a variety of services to build resiliency and guide our
youth toward a safe and healthy future. Youth in our care
are offered many opportunities to address physical, social,
cognitive, and psychological health and safety.
Bethany offers the following services:
Youth Services at Bethany
demonstrated consistent educational progress and who have
shown the ability to live more independently.
Bethany youth who are between 18 and 21 years of age
may live in either the Supervised Independent Living and
Transitional Living programs. Our Transitional Living
program is located on Bethany’s main campus and youth
have access to team member supports on a regular basis,
through a residential advisor model. In our Supervised
Independent Living program, youth can reside in
apartments on or off campus while still receiving support
as needed. Youth in either program must be employed or
enrolled full time in school.
The goal of all of our programs is to prepare our youth to
successfully live independently in the community, and to
support their growth and healing throughout this journey.

We are thankful to all of the volunteers and community supporters who help to provide a
brighter future to our kids. We could not continue without your generous support of time,
talent and generous giving. Our Board of Directors, team and especially our youth want to
say THANK YOU. Our success is because of YOU!
M&T Bank volunteered to help beautify our campus!
Bethany creates Campus Safety Team
In an effort to better protect the youth and team members who live and work on campus, Bethany created the
Campus Safety Team.
The team serves in a multitude of ways. They welcome and check in visitors, escort guests to different areas
of campus, assist with fire drills and other safety drills, and most importantly, work to keep everyone safe on
campus!
Our Campus Safety team also can be seen helping with team member car trouble and more.
The team also is key in helping with community events held on our grounds, assisting in traffic control, parking
and more.
The team serves around the clock, 365 days a year. We are incredibly thankful for all they do!
