There’s never a good time of year to start to have trouble with your boiler –
Christmas probably has to be the worse.
That was when Sarah Scholey found the Meadowhead property she shares
with her partner had no hot water, thanks to its failing 13-year-old boiler.
Sarah had some cover for the appliance but found her problem was not on
the priority list for repairs during the busiest period of the year. Frustrated, she
cancelled and decided to give 1st Call Gas a try after flicking through the
pages of Dronfield Eye’s sister publication, Active8, and reading testimonials
from highly satisfied customers in the area.
An engineer from 1st Call Gas began by fitting a diverter valve in an attempt
to extend the existing boiler’s life but this was not successful, and so it was
decided a new Ideal boiler was the only solution.
The team were able to go out a few days later to Meadowhead to do the
installation - a straightforward replacement in the same cupboard - and Sarah
was shown how to operate the easy to use thermostat. Everything was done
and dusted within a single day.
Sarah had enquired about a replacement for one of the home’s radiators
before the new boiler was fitted but was advised to wait to see how it would
perform once the job was done - and it’s now heating up perfectly!

HE remarkable Dronfield Woodhouse Charity Circle -
formerly The Miners Arms Charity Circle and Talbot
Arms Charity Circle - is back in full swing following the
pandemic, presenting a cheque for £6,500 to Derbyshire
MIND.
Since starting to support charities in 1989, the group has now
raised a staggering £190,822 for good causes.
Not operating every year due to pub closures and latterly
Covid, the Charity Circle is now trying to support local charities
and for the forthcoming year their cause is MS Chesterfield.
An auction is planned for later in the year. Anyone looking to
help out can donate raffle prizes which can be dropped off at
Dronfield Woodhouse Sports and Social Club any day after 3pm.
The group thanked current sponsors Smith’s Fish and Chips,
Firery Dough Wood Fired Pizzas, joyofsweets, The Chocolate

Money well spent
A
RETIRED couple from Sheffield say the process of having a
new bathroom designed and installed by H2O Bathroom
Solutions was faultless from beginning to end.
Maureen and Peter Mumford have
lived in their semi-detached
property since it was built in the
1970s and the home had only had
two bathrooms during half a
century.
It was a big decision for the
couple to replace their existing
fixtures and fittings, but on their
first visit to the H2O showroom on
Chesterfield Road, Woodseats, they
felt reassured that the local
company was the right fit for the
job.
Maureen said: “We spoke to
Richard who really knew what he
was talking about – we had
confidence in him right from the
start.”
This set the theme for what
followed as plans were drawn up to
strip back the room to its plaster
and transform it, including replacing
the Mumfords’ bath with a quadrant
shower.
All elements of the project were
handled by the H2O team, with
disruption during installation kept to
an absolute minimum.
Maureen continued: “They
organised everything for us and the
work has made such a difference,
it’s marvellous. We are so pleased
with the finish and the products and
feel it was money well spent.
“We can’t fault H2O at all – there’s
not a single thing to say against
them.”
Maureen added that having a
shower rather than a bath had made
life much easier.

Charity sunflower contest launched
D
RONFIELD-based financial
planners, Belmayne, are sowing the
seeds of a new charity fundraiser, by
inviting local children’s nurseries to join
their Summer of Sunflowers.
The independent firm’s Belmayne
Foundation is organising a sunflower
growing competition, which will raise
money through corporate sponsorship for
its two chosen charities.
Belmayne is equipping participating
nurseries from across the area with
seeds, biodegradable plant pots and peat-free compost to
enable them to grow sunflowers with their children.
They can then submit photographs and measurements of their
tallest specimens to be in with a chance of winning a visit from a
children’s entertainer and/or gardening equipment. The firm is
asking local businesses to support the nurseries’ efforts with a
minimum donation of £100.
All money raised through the initiative will be shared equally
between the two charities supported by the Belmayne
Foundation this year. They are Chesterfield’s Fairplay, which
works to improve the lives of children and young people with
disabilities, and the Just Good Friends
Club, who organise social activities to
boost the confidence of adults with
learning disabilities.
Ben Smalley, Belmayne partner and
foundation trustee, said: “We wanted to
involve the local community in our
fundraising this year and reaching out to
nurseries seemed like the perfect place
to start. We hope that the children enjoy
watching the sunflowers grow through
the summer and are excited to compete
for the prizes we have lined up. With the help of our corporate
partners, we hope to make this a fun and engaging way to raise
much needed funds for our two chosen charities.”

Church lottery grant is first glass!
A National Lottery Heritage Fund grant
is to restore medieval stained glass
windows at Dronfield Parish Church
A
£179,541 restoration project is set to see
St John the Baptist Church’s breathtaking
glass windows and surrounding stonework
restored to their former glory.
The windows in the Grade 1 listed building were
partly conserved in the 1970s and 1980s but the
intervening years has seen them suffer major pigment
loss, with their true colour being further masked by
Perspex which was installed at the same time to
provide protection.
The project will allow the three windows containing
medieval glass to be professionally conserved and
the Perspex removed.
The grant will also fund research into the church’s
history and the development of interpretation material
to open up the building’s fascinating past to a far
wider audience.
Volunteers will be recruited and trained to give
guided tours to visitors as part of the project. In
addition to tours, open days and special events, the
project will include the creation of interpretation
material to help people learn about the windows and
why they are such a valuable cultural and historical
asset.
The church also contains a number of benefactors’
boards and recording bequests - the oldest of which
goes back over 800 years - which will also be
studied. These will be thoroughly researched to
understand their role in the development of the
church and identify any connection to original
installation of the glazing.
Conservation
Local schools and community groups will be
involved and the windows used to help pupils learn
about art and art history. When the conservation work
is complete, the project will hold a final celebration
event for the community.
The aims of the project are to restore nationally
important medieval stained glass windows, to raise
public awareness of their historical significance, to
use the windows to promote an appreciation of
history and art history and to develop, with the
community of Dronfield, a sense of cultural, civic and
historic significance of ‘place.’
Sue Murphy, project co-ordinator, said: “We’re
delighted that we’ve received this support thanks to
National Lottery players. Dronfield Parish Church has
been at the centre of life in the town and a wonderful
resource for the whole community for nearly 1,000
years. Its 13th century-stained glass has stood the test
of time but the panels are in now in real need of some
conservation work.
“This grant will enable us to restore them to their
former glory and become an amazing cultural asset in
the town once again. This far-reaching project also
allows us to explore the fascinating history of the
church heritage and allow members of the public and
scores of schools to become a part of it.”
The project will also fund additional minor repairs to
some of the church’s Victorian windows to make them
weather-tight.

Changing Faces, a charity for
people who have a visible
difference, has carried out
research which has revealed an
increase in the number of
people who have experienced
hate crimes and hostile
behaviour. A local campaigner,
Bronwen Henthorn, explains
why no-one should experience
hate because of how they look

and she doesn’t want to add an act
of hate to this.
That’s why she and her fellow
campaigners have reached out to Police
and Crime Commissioners across the
country to encourage better support for
people with visible differences who have
experienced hate.
Difference
New research has found that a third of
people with a visible difference or
disfigurement have experienced a hate
crime, an increase from just over a
quarter of people in 2019.
That’s according to the charity Changing
Faces, whose new research reveals that
there has also been an increase in people
experiencing hostile behaviours because
of how they look.
Half of those with a visible difference
reported that they have to contend with
hostile behaviours, like stares and bullying.
This increase has been steadily rising since
2019.
The charity says that younger respondents
are even more likely to experience hostile behaviour because of
their visible difference, with two in three
of those aged 18-34 reporting this happens to them.
The survey conducted by Savanta of over 1,000 people with
a visible difference, such as a mark or scar, provides an
accurate picture of how those with visible differences are
affected by hate crimes, incidents and negative behaviours
across the UK today.
Unacceptable
Bronwen, a Changing Faces campaigner, says: “I shouldn’t have
to feel lucky that I haven’t experienced hate.
“The stares and comments I receive are already unacceptable.
I’ve heard so many concerning experiences from people in the
visible difference community and I don’t want to be the next
person to add hate to my story.
“That’s why I’ve written to the Derbyshire Police and Crime
Commissioner, calling on them to ensure that people with visible
differences are supported by their local police force to report
hostile behaviour when they experience it.
“We don’t want it to take a tragedy for people to take this issue
seriously.”
Changing Faces chief executive, Heather Blake, says: “These
are sobering numbers to read.

“We know that behind each of these statistics is a person who is
directly impacted by the shocking prejudice, and in some
instances criminal actions, of others.
“No-one should be a target for abuse or discrimination because
of how they look.
“First and foremost, we want anyone with a visible difference or
disfigurement to know that we are here for them. This isn’t
something you should just have to put up with. Let’s call it what it
is, it’s hate, and it’s wrong.
“We need people to challenge abuse if they witness it, and we
need authorities, like the police, to ensure people with visible
differences know that their experiences will be taken seriously,
should they report them.”
Bronwen added: “A visible difference shouldn’t make you a
target for abuse and hate, but too often, it does.
“Change needs to happen, and there are ways that everyone
can help, whether that’s reporting hateful comments you have
seen online, becoming an ally to someone in need, or calling the
police in an emergency situation.
“Difference is something to be celebrated, not used as an
excuse for hate.
“It’s time people understood that it’s not okay to target
someone because of how they look. Instead, we need to see the
positives that come from embracing diversity.”

A RETIRED couple from Greenhill are very
happy with their new bathroom installed by

They had read testimonials from satisfied

decided to give Craig and the team a call.
Craig called round to their home,
measured up, and chatted through
requirements before organising for the old
bathroom fixtures and fittings to be stripped

The main element of the project was a new
cubicle shower where the bath once was.

The neat and tidy finish to

WHEN Lee Bargh needed some fairly major work doing to the
roof of his family’s Chesterfield home, he simply couldn’t find
anyone able to take on all the tasks involved... until he
opened the pages of Dronfield Eye’s sister publication, Twist.
That was when he learned of the services offered by Dalton
Roofing, the experienced, independent, family-run, business
based at Sheepbridge.
“I read about them, checked them out on facebook and
noticed lots of impressive referrals,” said Lee. “They didn’t
give me the cheapest quotation, but I was impressed by their
attention to detail.”
Lee’s 100-year-old home at Avenue Road had sprung several
leaks, leading to serious damp patches on upstairs plastering.
Close inspection revealed that a complete overhaul of the
roof was required, including the removal of chimney stacks,
repositioning guttering, reinstalling solar panels and replacing
insulation.
The Dalton Roofing team noticed that the house’s original
guttering has been sitting directly onto the brickwork which
was allowing water to run into the cavity wall, so new fascias
were also required for the guttering to sit alongside. Also, the
solar panels required new lead flashings.
The ten panels had been installed to reduce heating bills
and now, with new roof insulation with breatheable felt, Lee,
wife Donna and daughter Amber will notice that their
property’s heat loss will be kept to a minimum.
Thrilled with the finished job, Lee, an IT storage specialist,
commented: “Apart from being functional, our new roof looks
really nice as well. It is neat and perfect and the Dalton
Roofing people who carried out the work were unobtrusive
and very respectful of the fact that I was in the house working
from home.
“I’m delighted with the finished job and I’ve already
recommended Dalton Roofing to my nephew who is also
having work done by them.”

Three schools, two
donkeys, one parade

T Andrew’s Community Church organised a reenactment
of the first Palm Sunday parade with the
support of the three Primary schools in the Gosforth
Valley and two donkeys from South Wingfield.
Together, they made up a single parade of children and actors
walking from William Levick School
and stopping at Gorseybrigg Primary
School and Nursery and ending up at
St Andrew’s School – or Jerusalem as
the signposts along the way had
directed.
Each school selected a class to be
involved in the whole event, but at
Gorseybrigg Primary School and
Nursery, another class joined because
they had spotted the donkeys arriving!
At St Andrew’s the whole school
turned out with palms to greet the
parade along with the children from St
Andrew’s Pre-School. With a good
number of parents around too, there
was quite a crowd.
Children all had palms and were
encouraged to sing clap, cheer and
dance along during the parade. Adults
stopped along the route to join in as
the parade passed.
A small group of actors in costume based on the Churches
Together In Dronfield and District Open the Book team,
augmented by St Andrews’ church members, performed short
pieces of drama at each school, starting with fetching the
donkeys at William Levick through the explanation of meaning of
a king riding on a donkey at Gorseybrigg School. Finally, at St
Andrew’s, the contrast of the elation by the crowd and the
annoyance of the religious authorities (Pharisees) over the

All the children had the opportunity to meet and stroke the
donkeys.
Ben Curtis, head of William Levick, said: “Many thanks to all the
team for all the hard work and preparation that went into
organising such a successful event. I think the involvement of all
three schools was a special part of the event.”

welcomed the opportunity
for the children of the three
schools to engage in a joint
activity in the community.
Thanks went out to two
PCSOs for their help on the
day and Shani Mitchell from
South Wingfield who
supplied the donkeys free of
charge. She works with the
Flicka rescue centre in
Cornwall and the donkeys in
Dronfield had been rescued
from northern France.
This is yet another event in
St Andrew’s Community
Church 50th Jubilee
celebrations. You may have
also enjoyed seeing the
golden number ‘50’ in the
grass outside the church,
picked out by a host of
yellow crocuses, then
golden narcissi.

The young and the not-so-young turned out throughout the Dronfield Eye area to
celebrate the coronation of our new monarch, King Charles III. Some of the
youngest were pupils of local schools and nurseries who did their thing in class,
while the eldest reveller was Luncheon Club member Robert Stopford-Taylor who,
aged 103 years, clearly recalled the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

Dan Waddington
Story time with dad Dan
and The Dragonesses
W
HEN Dan Waddington was growing up in Unstone and Dronfield, he
never dreamed that one day he would be an author.
Now a father of two, he has
recently seen his first book
published, a children’s story called
The Dragonesses.
Dan attended Unstone St Mary’s
Infant School, then Apperknowle
Primary and The Dronfield School
when it was over two sites,
although he didn’t study English
beyond GCSE.
He explained: “Since becoming a
dad, I have been lucky enough to
read a lot of bedtime stories and
also use mine and my daughters’
imaginations to create the
dragonesses.
“When furloughed, I was looking
after my daughters so the stories were useful and came up a lot. I decided to try and
write the story down and it changed into rhyming verses.
“It is about two princess dragons that don't breathe fire, they breathe bubbles instead!”
“One of my good friends is an illustrator so when it was a possibility to choose
someone to design the book for publishing, I was happy to work with him.”
Dan, who now lives on the north of Sheffield at Stannington, works as advertising
manager at Leeds Bradford Airport.

Ex-stadium boss is new president
D
RONFIELD Probus has a new
president. Roy Mitchell
received the group’s chain of office
from retiring president Dr Tony
Bethell at the May meeting at
Dronfield Contact Club.
Roy has been a member of Probus for
the past five years. Born in 1938 in
Attercliffe, he left school at 15 and
became an apprentice bricklayer with
builders J F Finnegan.
After achieving his City & Guilds, and
following two years National Service
with the Royal Engineers, Roy set up
a bricklaying company with his
brother.
One of the most prestigious projects
they worked on was the Orchard
Square shopping centre in the heart of
Sheffield.
Working in site management gave
him the experience to apply for the
role of maintenance worker at Sheffield
United in 1990 and within six months
he had been promoted to stadium
manager at Bramall Lane.
Retiring in 2002, he moved to Spain
for five years and now lives at
Jordanthorpe. He is still a regular
supporter of Sheffield United.

Open Arts
ERBYSHIRE Open Arts continues to showcase the
D wealth of artistic talent to be found across the
county.
Taking place over the Spring Bank holiday weekend, from May
27th to 29th, this year’s free annual event has over 200 artists
exhibiting at 73 venues.
The event provides a great chance to visit artists’ studios, and
other venues to see artwork being produced.

Opera choruses

HIS year's annual Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir
summer concert will be a selection of well known -
and not so well known - opera choruses.
The programme will include such favourites as the Easter Hymn

Nabucco and the eerie Witches' Chorus from Verdi's Macbeth,
alongside other pieces.

School of Music before gaining a scholarship to the Royal
Northern College of Music and now has a busy international

All set for a bumper Gala day
T
HE annual Dronfield Gala is one of the staples of the
town’s calendar! This year’s fun-packed Gala will
take place on Sunday, 25th June, in Cliffe Park from noon
until 5pm.
This year’s free-to-enter event will be bigger and better than
ever, with a mixture of old favourites and new additions.
The Aviary will be swooping in, with their beautiful birds of
prey. Fairground rides will be back by popular demand and
new, exciting activities this year include mini pony rides and
the Mega Slide.
This year will also see the addition of scrumptious cream teas
served in Gosforth Lodge.
The Town Council takes pride in Dronfield Gala being an event
for the local population to come together, with community groups
taking centre stage with their performances.
This year, look out for Miniver Academy, Ladies Voices and
Sheffield Concert Band kicking off the celebrations at noon.
The music tent will showcase performances from local bands
and artists.
There will be more food and drink outlets than ever before this
year, including Greedy Greek Deli, Dani’s Desserts, Firery Dough
Pizza and Project D. Whatever your choice, it can be washed
down with beverages from Salute Prosecco, Really Awesome
coffee or Drone Valley Brewery.
So, take the opportunity to celebrate Dronfield, grab a bite to
eat and relax in the sunshine (hopefully!) whilst listening to some

Why live shows are no longer a
A busy performer for more than four decades,
Toyah will discover a whole new meaning
to the word ‘rock’ when she appears locally
this summer. Mike Firth reports

HE stock question to put to anyone appearing on
stage at Castleton’s ‘Devil’s Arse’ venue for the first
time is: “Have you ever previously performed in a cave?”
They all reply “no”, of course - except Toyah. But then again,
she has always been a little different to other acts.
“I’m very proud to say I have performed in a few caves,” she
told me. “There is a very beautiful cave at Bodmin Moor in
Cornwall and I’ve also done St Michael’s Cave in Gibraltar where
the famous Rock has the most astonishing crystal cave
underneath it.
“I’d like to perform underground more because I think it really
adds to the whole experience!”
Toyah says that although she knows the Peak District and
surrounding towns quite well,
she has only seen
photographs of Peak Cavern,
where she is to perform on
Saturday, 22nd July.
“I imagine it could be quite
cold in there but we will be
absolutely fine as it’s going
to be at the height of
summer and the audience
can rock out,” she said.
“Although I know there isn’t a
dressing room there, so there
won’t be any costume
changes unless I do them in
front of the audience!”
A musician, singer,
songwriter, producer, author,
storyteller, YouTube star and
more, Toyah Willcox enjoyed
a run of chart hits at the start
of the 1980s, including I Want
To Be Free and It’s A Mystery. By the time she became a regular
on Top of the Pops, she was already an established actress.
Her popularity has expanded over the intervening decades
and, thanks to the wonders of modern day technology, her
music is now being appreciated by an audience of people who
were not born when she became a household name.
“We are more successful than ever,” she explained. “Our
international media reach is now 111 million. We have just been
signed to an international agent, so while this year we are
touring in the UK, next year we are looking at different
countries.”
Four decades on from her first recordings, Toyah has charted
five times over the past three years, the latest being a longoverdue
release of Toyah at Drury Lane. Recorded on Christmas

Eve, 1981, the show had a BBC TV audience of 12 million viewers
at the time.
“All my back catalogue has also started to be re-released and
that’s fantastic.
“At my shows, 50 per cent of the audience are under the age
of 25. Young people have followed 80s artists since the year
2000. People are absolutely loving this music so we are
enjoying every minute of it.”
In addition to being “flat out” with her own concerts through
until November, Toyah is also on stage at most of the big UK
festivals this year. On top of this performing schedule, she is in
demand with continuous acting and TV engagements.
“We also have a lot to do with social media the whole time; it
takes up 80 per cent of our day,” she explained.
Toyah’s career spans 43 years, 30 albums, more than 25
feature films, countless theatrical roles, TV presenting and two
books. Since the late 1970s she has inspired generations to be
expressive, individual and colourful... and how many girls spent
countless hours in front of the mirror trying to imitate her
hairstyles?
“It used to take me about
12 hours to get ready for a
photo-shoot or a video, but for
a live show you know you are
going to sweat it off in the
opening three numbers so I
would be ready to go on
stage within an hour,” she
said.
In 2001, Toyah was awarded
an honorary doctorate by the
University of Central England
in recognition of her
achievements in performing
arts, media and broadcasting -
and, of course, she was also
the voice of the Teletubbies!
She says that touring these
days is far easier than it used
to be.
“I first toured 42 years ago
but now we are in a very different world. We have more
motorways, LED lights, all the technology we use is smaller and
it’s is a much smoother experience all round.
“We can reach more people these days because we can
broadcast our own concerts and technically today is a really
satisfying time to be doing live work.
“I feel less pressured but that could be because I’ve been
doing it for so long now and I understand the whole craft of it. I
enjoy it much more than I did when I was starting out.”
Toyah appears in the Peak District not once, but twice this
year. Wednesday, October 25th, will see her back at one of her
favourite venues, Buxton Opera House, with guitarist husband
Robert Fripp - founder member of rockers King Crimson - on
their Sunday Lunch Live tour.

Is your garden looking up?
Our wildlife garden columnist, Prof Ian
Rotherham, says to make additional
attractions for birds, bees and butterflies
it’s time to start thinking vertically
I
Taking your garden to the next level with a trellis or pergola will attract more wildlife
HAVE worked with wildlife gardens from very small
indeed, to full-sized nature reserves, and the principles
often remain the same.
Wildlife can be drawn to a bird-feeding area the size of a
window ledge and a window box. Furthermore, not everyone
has a big garden and so it is good to maximise the benefits from
the space you have, and this applies from the largest garden to
the very smallest.
One key idea is to think in three dimensions and to plan
upwards or vertically, as well as in the plan (flat) space that you
have. Walls, fences, hedges, and other features become
wonderful assets to expand and enhance your wildspace.

It’s easy to see why bees are attracted to passion flowers
Consider these structures not merely as boundaries but
potential habitats to grow shrubs, climbers, trees and more, and
to provide flowers season-long, fruit and berries in the autumn,
and sites for breeding, roosting, and hibernating too.
With careful planning over time, your garden can increase in
volume of habitat as well as improving in its quality for delivering
nature. South-facing, sunny walls provide hotspots for early
season butterflies and bumblebees, and especially so if there
are abundant flowers such as winter-flowering jasmine, early
clematis, and shrubs such as broom planted against them.
Along with boundaries as above, trees and shrubs provide
opportunities to diversify upwards, and as they grow, climbers
such as ivy, honeysuckle and clematis can be added.
You are looking to provide colour, nectar and pollen all through
the summer, and then fruit and berries from late summer into
early winter.

EYE on wildlife gardens
Working vertically, you get ‘more bang for your buck’ in terms of
wildlife habitat for the garden space you have.
Smaller native trees such as silver birch, field maple and rowan
are ideal. They grow quickly and provide abundant food for
insects and birds too. Enhanced with fast-growing climbers, with
these trees and shrubs you speedily gain a richly biodiverse
volume of garden space.
This can be further enhanced by the addition of things like bird
nesting boxes, roosting pouches and bat boxes. Bug boxes can
be added to walls and fences, or else on the posts of other built
structures such as pergolas. However, for any reasonable degree
of success in attracting solitary bees for example, these need to
be placed in open, sheltered, sunny situations. Success is then
pretty much guaranteed.
If you have available space, then it is good to create features
such as trellis structures, arches and pergolas and again, to add
honeysuckles, clematis (early and late flowering varieties),
wisteria, and passionflower. The latter now come as frost-hardy
varieties so they can be grown in northerly and upland areas too.
However, some of the climbers such as clematis and wisteria for

instance, can be vulnerable to the long, deep droughts we now
experience quite regularly.
Because of this, I recommend a deep wood-chip mulch which
also helps proof against extreme frosts. Passionflower growing
along walls and on trellis’s or pergolas, will flower right through
the season to provide beautiful flowers for the gardener and
plenty of nectar and pollen for the insects.
In all these situations you can mix the different plants so they
intimately intertwine, once again, to maximise the benefit.
Finally, it is worth remembering that the visiting birds will also
utilise these vertical spaces, and some, like the woodpeckers and
parakeets, will favour feeders raised up quite high. When placing
these then think carefully about safety and security from
predators for the visiting birdlife. Sparrowhawks have to eat too,
but don’t make it too easy!

Finding the cheapest rates is the best option
You should always do your research and check out the price a
conveyancer will charge, but the cost is not the main factor to
consider when looking for a conveyancing solicitor.
The most important factor should be the conveyancer’s
reputation, and you can establish that by checking previous
reviews and making sure that all conveyancing fees are
transparent.
There are lots of different pricing structures which different
firms offer so you should be clear about the total costs and be
wary of low headline-grabbing fees which hide other costs
which need to be added on as extras.
Often low headline costs are not always what they seem once
the additional costs have been taken into account.
Conveyancing solicitors don’t communicate well
There’s no denying that conveyancing involves a significant
amount of work, and there are many stakeholders involved who
must be consulted throughout the process. However, that
should not be an excuse for your conveyancing solicitor to
keep you in the dark as to how much progress is being made.

WAS delighted to attend a joyous celebration of
talented young people in the local area last month: the
Dronfield Schools’ Musical Evening.
The event – which last took place before the pandemic – gives
children from local schools the opportunity to perform at the
historic Winding Wheel theatre in Chesterfield.
Up-and-coming band Kickback opened proceedings. The trio –
comprised of Dronfield Henry Fanshawe students Ben Lunn,
James Goodwin, and Henry Powell – covered a range of charttopping
classics, before finishing their set with a performance of
an as yet unnamed original song.
Next up was Northfield Junior School’s choir, who treated the
audience to an uplifting medley of songs such as Bring Me
Sunshine and Here Comes the Sun. There was even a special
instrumental section in their performance of Mr Blue Sky when
each student began to play the tune on brightly-coloured kazoos!
William Levick Primary School’s choir then showcased some
more beautiful harmonies, and they had also rehearsed
accompanying dance moves to their rendition of Let Love Shine
Through.
The final act of the evening was the Dronfield Junior School
choir, performing Gary Barlow’s Sing and Revolting Children from
Matilda the Musical.
I also must give a mention to the four phenomenally talented
and brave young soloists who came to the front of the stage to
sing in both of these songs - they were amazing!
It was an unforgettable evening for everyone involved and, for
me, seeing such cheerful and confident young performers on
that stage made me very proud to have attended Dronfield
schools.
All of this, however, would not have been possible without the
efforts of teachers, pupils, parents, Winding Wheel staff, and, of
course, the dedicated members of The Rotary Club of Dronfield
– many of whom were volunteering as stewards on the night.
Rotarian Rob Barron, who had a significant role in organising
the event, said: “The purpose is to give young people the
opportunity to showcase their talents and skills on a theatrical
stage outside of their normal school environment.
“Members of Rotary in Dronfield acknowledge and thank all the
schools here tonight. We are aware that this evening has meant
additional work for the staff and children outside of their
prescribed curriculum, and all of it is a voluntary activity. It is
hoped that this event will yield a memorable occasion for all.”
The event was a resounding success and could only lead
anyone who was in the audience to one conclusion: Dronfield
certainly has talent.

describe loneliness as an epidemic, in order to
explain the way it affects people across our society.
They could not have foreseen that a real epidemic was
just around the corner.
Covid 19 made everyone change the way they socialised. Yet
while we are social animals, many of us are struggling to unlearn
the behaviours that helped combat Covid. For those
already feeling isolated, it’s become harder to get out of that rut.
How do we help people connect and find a sense of belonging
in our neighbourhoods? This is the central question to be
explored at connectedness workshops. It’s clear that to forge
friendships and create new bonds between residents, we need a
flourishing of neighbourhood-based groups, activities, or events
and projects. And to organise these we need more people to
step up and work together.
What does it mean to organise something in your community? It
doesn’t need to involve boring meetings, arguing with
neighbours, or waiting for decisions to be made by ‘higher-ups’.
The Feeling Connected project aims to make it easier to start a
community activity or group. Training and support will be
provided to anyone with a passion for bringing people together,
or with an idea that can engage residents and create
connections. If you are already organising something where you
live, you can share your experience.

The transformation was all in a day’s work for the
team at family-run bespoke bedroom furniture
specialists Supafit.
The 14-year-old’s mum said Supafit had been a
natural choice for the project after previously fitting
wardrobes in the home’s master bedroom.
She said: “We knew them and we were very
pleased with what they’d done for us before. Again,
we wanted to maximise the use of available space.”
The family opted for an aluminium frame sliding
wardrobe with two central doors in full chalk grey
glass, and two outside doors featuring vertical
panels of vintage blue glass, graphite glass, and
Pasedina Pine to complement the carcass and
internal fittings.
The customer continued: “I like the quality of the

accurate.
“Everyone involved is very helpful; Jenna created a
nice design for us.
“It’s changed the room completely and we’re all

The cheapest UK cities to own a car
I
T may not seem like it all of
the time, but motorists in our
area get a pretty good deal.
Well, that’s compared to the
rest of the UK, at least.
Sheffield has been listed as the
fifth cheapest city in England - and
the seventh cheapest in the UK - to
own and run a car. Durham, Stokeon-Trent,
Inverness and Lancaster
are the cheapest.
The new research, conducted by
A-Plan Insurance, calculated the
average price of petrol, parking,
car insurance and an MOT across
the nation. Each city was then
given a score out of 100, with the
highest being the cheapest.
Durham is named the cheapest
UK city to own a car, with a score
of 82.4, with Sheffield on 63.0.
Brighton is the most expensive UK city to own a car, outside of
London. It’s score was 34.7. All of the ten most expensive
motoring cities are in the south
Durham is the cheapest place to own a car; ranking
considerably higher than any other, with a total price score of
82.4. The average price of petrol, for example, costs 136p per
litre in Durham, the lowest price across the nation. Additionally,
the average price of car insurance is £731, more than £300 less
than the national average.
Stoke on Trent is the second cheapest city with a total price

burgeoning cost of living crisis has
caused everyday expenses to rise
exponentially, including those associated with owning a car, such
as buying petrol.
“The data shows that most of the cheapest cities to own a car
are in the North, while the South may be spending a larger
portion of their wages on their vehicles. This offers people a
fascinating insight into petrol, insurance, parking and MOT prices,
whether they’re residents of these cities or are considering
visiting this spring and summer.”

away in your house, they could be
worth something. Carmel Stewart
offers a few tips about where is
best to buy and sell them - and
warns of some of the pitfalls
T
HE coronation of King Charles III has seen
shops and internet sites flooded with all
sorts of commemorative goodies from tea-pots
to T-shirts and a host of knick-knacks in
between.
Not to be left out, the automotive industry has
added its own little souvenir, thanks to toy maker
Mattel, although it is a little more pricey than a
spoon or a tea towel.
Made to order only, a 1:64 scale model of the State
Coach can be yours for £60, which is not too
outrageous given the price of some diecast models.
Not that long ago, the Vectis auction house sold a
Corgi Batman gift set for £900.
But, if you decide to start collecting, a ‘theme’ is
often a good idea – Rolls-Royces, fire engines,
buses and coaches, film and TV are all quite
common and have a good resale market.
It would be unusual for a diecast model not to
increase in value as time passes, especially if you
have chosen with care. Cars that remind buyers of
their childhood always go down well.
Condition, too, will boost the resale value, as will
the original box.
When starting up, try car boot sales, autojumbles
and toy shops before heading for the internet and
auction sites.
Someone on Twitter regularly picks up a few Hot
Wheels cars with his weekly shop at the
supermarket!
The advantage of buying from a shop or market
stall is that you get to see the condition of the car
and its packaging before you buy and the price is
clear to see.
When buying over the internet beware of extras.
Postage can sometimes be more than the vehicle
and auction houses always add commission and
postage to the price.
In addition, it is very easy to get carried away
when bidding at an internet auction. If you are not
careful you will find yourself the not-so-proud owner
of two dozen mini rally cars, some train track and
turntable plus assorted Power Rangers which you
really don’t want.
Bear in mind too that you will need a display
cabinet for your collection. You can try second-hand
furniture stores although, more often than not, they
are using any they have to display their own goods.
Gumtree and FaceBook Market Place are good
places to look and then there is always that old
reliable Ikea, provided you are prepared to
negotiate the miles of shop floor to view your
proposed purchase.
A final note of caution – keep tabs on how many
vehicles you have, otherwise you may end up
having to move house to accommodate them all.
Car collecting is addictive – you have been warned!

station artwork
T
HERE is still a chance to see the latest exhibition of
schools’ artwork at Dronfield Station.
Former Town Mayor, Coun Lilian Deighton, and Lee Rowley, MP
for NE Derbyshire , unveiled the artwork at an event organised
by the Friends of Dronfield Station.
The young artists are from Dronfield Infants and Junior Schools
and St Andrew’s CE Methodist Primary School.
Lee Rowley said: “Once again the work demonstrates the depth
of artistic ability within local schools. It is always great to take a
break from all the hurly burly of Westminster and to witness the
enthusiasm and skill which pupils put in to their work.”
Coun Deighton paid her compliments to the children at the
three schools who, she felt, had produced a series of beautiful
pictures in the two waiting shelters.
She said: “It was so nice to see the colourful artworks which are
an excellent advert for the schools and their teachers as well as
brightening up the station for people waiting for trains.”
Also at the unveiling was Darren Allsopp the newly-appointed
stakeholder manager for Northern Rail which serves Dronfield
Station.
He commented: “Since taking on this role I have been
pleasantly surprised to see groups such as the Friends of
Dronfield Station making such a fine job of looking after local
stations and making them well maintained places for people
travelling by train.
“The artwork exhibition at Dronfield, which I know has been
running for over ten years, is a great example of how to brighten
up the station with a colourful display, as well as providing local
schoolchildren with the opportunity to show off their talent.”
The exhibition, which can be seen in platform waiting shelters,
remains until July when a display of vintage railway posters will
take over.
Foodbank support
D
RONFIELD company AMETEK Land has teamed up
with Chesterfield Foodbank to support local families
struggling with the rising cost of living.
The foodbank is a charity that provides emergency food and
support to people in crisis, including those affected by poverty,
job loss, benefit changes, and other difficult situations. It relies on
donations from local businesses and individuals to help meet the
growing demand for its services.
AMETEK Land's staff recently made a generous donation to the
foodbank, which will help provide much-needed food and
supplies to local families in need.

Mike Firth calls in for lunch at
a favourite local venue and
discovers a number of
exciting changes

HEN Clair Stokes and Adrian
Arksey decided to take a
night off from their work
transforming The Angel pub and
restaurant at Holmesfield, they
decided to book somewhere special. It
was Adrian’s birthday, so where could
they celebrate?
The couple walked out of the back door, around the
building and then in through the front door.
“We had reserved a table for two at our own place under the
names Mr and Mrs Smith,” smiled Clair. “Our staff were most
surprised to see us - but we certainly made a good choice and
had a lovely evening!”
The Angel has enjoyed a thoroughly impressive refurbishment
but some things - like staff members and the very popular
complete gluten-free menu - have
been retained.
The food offering has also been
broadened and chef Phil Ball is
currently delighting in showing off
The Angel’s brand new summer
menu. Wife Helen and I were two of
the first to try out particularly special
main courses, but not until after we
had enjoyed sharing a selection of
small plates for starters.
Helen’s favourites were the tender
Honey Chilli Belly Pork Bites and
Korean Chilli Chicken Wings, while
I simply loved the bowl of Teriyaki
Meatballs and Arancini. All were
particularly tasty.
The Angel’s menu offers veggie and
vegan classics, favourite dishes
which regular diners insist must
remain on the listings at all times,
steaks, salads and special lunches.
For those seeking lighter offerings,
bar bites are also available.
Steak night comes around every
Wednesday evening.
Back to our table (in the conservatory
- our favourite place) and Helen chose
Roasted Chicken Breast which was
served atop cubed potatoes with bacon
pieces, broccoli, capers and salsa verde. The
whole creation looked a picture and was again
full of flavour.
My choice was a long-time favourite, Fillet of Hake. I do like the
texture of this fish and this particular one certainly didn’t
disappoint, being lovely and white and presented with crushed
new potatoes, leeks, shrimps and tiny baked tomatoes for
company. Absolutely lovely. While we had both enjoyed our fill,
when it reluctantly became time for us to leave our table, we did
so feeling replete but not stuffed.
Since taking over, Clair and Adrian
have welcomed many regular
customers but are also greeting
lots of new faces. The Angel’s
reputation for its gluten-free
offering, with all food made on the
premises, means some customers
drive for many miles to enjoy their
favourite dishes here. The beers
and wines are special too!

THE CHANTRY HOTEL

A message from Michael
AFTER Jackie passed away, there was no question of whether I would
carry on running The Chantry and keeping things just the way he
wanted.
For the last few years Jackie wanted a quiet life so we were semiretired
and only opened for a few hours a week - at one point only
opening on a Thursday morning for market day because all of our
regular customers begged us to stay open on that day.
It was also an opportunity for Jackie to see many of his old friends
from the entertainment world.
Little by little, we began to open more days of the week and Jackie
began to enjoy being ‘mine host’ to all of our customers, old and new.
Jackie continued to want some privacy and time to relax so the hotel
bedrooms have not been used for paying residents since 2016.
So, moving forward, we are now continuing to bring The Chantry
back to life, little by little. We have begun with a recruitment drive to
find the right people to come and work with us and love the hotel as
much as we do.
By June/July we will have extended our hours of business to opening
earlier in the morning and closing later in the day. At present, we are
open Tuesday until Saturday, so our next big move will be to open
the main restaurant for traditional Sunday lunch. We have so many
customers who ask all the time if we will open for Sunday lunch as
they were so popular in the past and people had to book weeks in
advance.
Hopefully by mid-August/September we will be ready to accept
residents in the hotel once again after some refurbishments to the
rooms. Our eventual goal is to have our restaurant open in the
evenings and we will begin by having a once-a-month evening which
we had before lockdown and proved very popular.
I could not have done this without a great team around me, with my
right-hand woman Claire Martin who has been at The Chantry for
almost five years stepping up to the role of general manager. Taking
on the role of assistant manager is Ciara Chappell who has been with
us for two years.
Even though we have so much upheaval and change this year, we
still want to make sure that our customers come first by providing
them with wonderful food and great service. We have also made the
decision to hold our prices at last year’s rates to continue to give great
value for money.

Plaque recalled Sarah’s special life
A
N appeal has gone out for more
information about a plaque in
memory of a nurse and midwife from
Dronfield Woodhouse.
A photograph in the Dronfield Heritage Trust
archive reveals that the tablet honouring
Sarah Stevenson once hung in Dronfield
Woodhouse Methodist Church, at Holmesfield
Road.
The inscription reads: “In Memoriam To The
Glory of God and in Memory of Sarah
Stevenson of this parish who in all weathers
and at all times administered to the sick and
needy for a period of 42 years. This tablet
was erected as a token of love and esteem to
her valuable and devoted service as a nurse
by the people of Dronfield Woodhouse and
District. She hath done what she could.”
The plaque shows that Sarah lived from 25th
April 1848 to 14th June 1920.
Heritage Trust researchers have discovered
that Sarah was born Sarah Siddall in Dronfield
Woodhouse and married Samuel Stevenson in
1872.
The couple had ten children but by the time of
the 1911 census not only had Samuel Stevenson
died but also six of their children. On the 1911 Census, Sarah is
living at Lucas Cottage, Dronfield Woodhouse with her married
daughter, Lillian, and family and her occupation is described as
midwife.
The chapel has now closed and has been converted into
a residential property, with the whereabouts of the plaque

School teacher.

OAL Aston now has two more life-saving defibrillators thanks to the generosity of
villagers and local businesses.
One of the defibs has been installed outside The Cross Daggers pub and the other is at the end of the
row of shops on Barnard Avenue. There are already two others, at the Village Hall and the Methodist
Church on Eckington Road.
Local resident Martin Stevens has organised the collection of funds to finance the machines. He said:
“We were delighted to receive donations from Drone Valley Brewery, Auriga Cars and Dronfield Lodge,
but most of it was raised through local people. We’ve had fund-raising football cards and a raffle at the
Cross Daggers and most of it was raised through local people who thought the same as me - what a
good thing for the village.”
There is now a plan to site a fifth defib in the village and organise training events so local people
would have confidence to use them in an emergency.

insulation and LED lighting at the centre to
reduce our carbon footprint, making the
facility one of the greenest in the area.

coming years with our fantastic leisure team
and we can’t wait to welcome new customers
to come and try out our facilities. So to
celebrate the centre’s birthday, we are
