around the villages — 2 Double centenarian celebration The Parish Magazine - July/August 2023 25 Coronation Cup Edna Wall (left) and Lady Pamela De Ville (right) congratulated one another on their 100th birthdays at Signature of Sonning care home. The home, originally called Sunrise of Sonning, has, since their 100th birthday celebrations, changed its name for the second time in 18 months. From 1 June the home is called Sonning Gardens Care Home, part of the Avery Healthcare Group. But for the two centenarians the name of their home is far less important then their more treasured memory of the personal congratulations they both received from Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla! Beaver-ing in the community By Magnus Smyly, Beavers section asssistant Sonning Art Group's latest Chairman’s cup — with the theme, The Coronation — was won by Brenda Hooper for an excellent pen and wash picture of Westminster Abbey. The group's summer programme includes tutor sessions and a sketching afternoon in The Mill at Sonning. 1st Sonning-on-Thames scouts is continuing to make links with the local community — this time through its beaver colony — when Nick, the Berkshire County Sports Tennis Club head tennis coach hosted them for fun tennis games. Their summer term programme has also included a visit by Red Watch crew from Wokingham Road Fire Station, who answered an array of questions from the beavers before giving a tour of their fire engine. This visit ended on a high note as the crew sped off ‘blue lighted’ as a call out to a fire came in. CRICKET In late May, coaches Sharon and Grace from Sonning Cricket Club hosted the beavers on King George’s Field for an introduction to cricket. We thank all those who have helped to make these events happen. If you are interested in knowing more about beaver scouts (for 6 to 8 year olds, meeting term time on Thursdays between 6-7pm), then we still have places available.
