A huge thank you to all the gardeners and visitors
who took part in ‘Open Gardens’ this year.
of how many visitors came or how much was
raised for our chosen charities: Campden Edge,
Campden Home Nursing and the equipment
fund for Campden’s First Responders, but we
will let you know next month.
Thanks again to all who opened their beautiful
gardens and to those who supported the event
CHIPPING CAMPDEN SURGERY
MONTHLY NEWS FLASH
Recycling
We have been successful in securing a grant from the
Town Council to enable us to reintroduce tablet packing
recycling, this will allow us to continue with this for the
rest of the year, we are very grateful to the Council.
Staff updates
We currently have a treatment room nurse vacancy and are
recruiting to this role.
Patient Participation Group
As a group of patients, we are looking to set up a small
working party of patients who are willing to represent
the wider patient population and consult with the surgery
on priorities for patients and the provision of services
for patients and the practice over the coming year. The
working party will have the opportunity to meet with key
staff at the surgery on a regular basis to discuss the medical
needs of our local community.
If you would like to be part of that working group, please
email Sue Pritchard (Chair) suewildpritchard@gmail.com
Second hand book sales
Thanks to the generosity of people donating to second
handbooks in the surgery waiting room we have been able
to give £50 to the Open Gardens who support two local
charities, Campden Home Nursing and Campden Edge.
Equipment
We are due to have all our equipment calibrated and
would like to remind patients who have had equipment
lent to them to return them to the surgery so that they can
be included in the process, this includes pulse oximeters,
blood pressure machines and nebulisers, thank you for
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
We welcome your contributions.
Email: editor@campdenbulletin.co.uk
Dear Editor,
Through your paper I would like to say a huge thank you to
Charlie Bennett for having the inspiration, the knowledge and
energy to create the Campden Music Festival back in 2002.
Over the years the Festival has welcomed musicians from
all over the world and we have been fortunate to enjoy many
many excellent concerts on our door step here in Chipping
Campden, culminating in the most wonderful festival we have
just experienced.
I appreciate that the festival would not have been so successful
without the help of many volunteers, manning the box office,
looking after the artists, ushering, having musicians to stay
in private homes, but none of this would have been possible
without Charlie’s leadership and enthusiasm.
Not only has the Festival given us the opportunity to hear first
class music, it has also encouraged many visitors to our Town
from all over the world who regularly take their holiday over
the festival period, thus providing vital trade for our local
businesses, many of whom say that it is now the busiest few
weeks of the year.
Charlie is now handing over the baton to two very capable
people Thomas Hull and Jessica May, they are taking over a
well established and world renowned Festival, I wish them
every success, but of course none of this would have been
possible without Charlie, so a very big ‘Thank You’ to you, for
all you have done for our benefit.
Yours sincerely
Sally Lindner
Dear Editor,
We would like to express our appreciation for all the work
that the departing four Town Councillors have contributed
to the running of Chipping Campden over the last few years.
Graham Greenall, Michael Allchin, Bob King and Richard
Orr will be sorely missed and we thank them for standing.
As residents of the Upper High Street we would particularly
like to thank Richard Orr for instigating the re-paving of the
top side pavement of the Upper High Street. We had lived for
30 years with badly broken concrete whilst the rest of the town
had been re-paved.
With gratitude
David and Diana Evans
High Street
Dear Editor,
Your correspondent, JH Bates of Broad Campden (any relation
to the Town Council’s Acting Clerk, I wonder!), clearly does not
understand the purpose of a Parish meeting, known here as an
Annual Assembly. However, he is not alone, as the Town Council
Chairman and his Councillors do not appear to understand it
either. The purpose is excellently set out in a website ‘Ask your
Council’, which makes clear a Parish Meeting is “a meeting of
the people of the parish”. It further states:
- Any person on the electoral register of the parish is entitled
to speak.
- With the exception of the Chairman, Councillors rank the
same as other members of the electorate.
- Agenda items can be added even during the meeting.
- Any matter pertinent to the parish may be discussed.
- All issues are decided by a majority of those present and
voting.
- Minutes must be taken of the meeting and signed by the
Chairman, either at the end of the meeting or at the next parish
meeting.
JH Bates states that the meeting was “a bit of a shambles”.
The reason was because the Chairman did not understand
or ignored these requirements. The agenda was a long series
of self serving presentations by various Councillors, taking
over an hour, with residents being refused the right to ask
questions after each presentation, and any comments confined
to the final item on the agenda. When I tried to give a short
report on the Peelers Trust, the Chairman tried to deny me
the right, and, when members of the public protested, tried to
close the meeting. At one point he was heard to declare “This
is my meeting”, clearly at odds with the procedures outlined
above. After considerable protest the Chairman reconvened
the meeting.
JH Bates states: “The issue the crowd were there to discuss
was the recent democratic Trust vote against... the grassed
area alongside the war memorial (being) used for commercial
purposes”. This was only one of the issues that residents tried
to raise, one of which I outline above.
The “shameful spectacle” to which JH Bates refers was the
behaviour of the Chairman, in distorting the purpose of the
meeting, and several councillors, who did not obey the Code
of Conduct requirement for impartiality and respect. It is little
wonder that residents became so angry.
JH Bates concludes by asking: “If people are so passionate
about local issues why did they not stand for election?” The
behaviour of the Chairman and some Councillors at this
meeting, and at many Council meetings, amply demonstrates
why people are reluctant to fill the vacancies in this Council.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
continued
Dear Editor,
Regarding letters to the editor June edition of the Chipping
Campden Bulletin, in particular the topic ‘War Memorial
Green’:
Having read the letters regarding this subject, I was particularly
concerned to read one suggestion to cordon off the memorial
site with iron posts and chains, how distasteful that would be.
In my opinion the Memorial Site needs leaving as it was
designed and built - in reverence and uncluttered.
Robert Grove, Calf Lane
Dear Editor,
Like many I have been plagued by moths... despite my efforts
to eradicate, swat them etc, they have defeated me for the past
three years!!
Not content to ravage my clothes, they have done battle with
my carpets, throws, pillows etc - they showed no mercy!
Just by chance whilst having a cup of coffee at Katie’s, I met
a couple - new to the area, late ‘thirties’ - children in local
school - their names Chris & Kim Golding.
They came into my home and did a complete job!
My home sparkled!! The rugs came up like new as did the
curtains - all by the way had been infested!! I saw the debri
following the cleanup and could not believe my eyes!
Two weeks have passed and not even ONE moth. Sounds
incredible - my rugs look new (and they are old, passed
through the family).
I had to share this, eveyone I know has the same problem.
This local company is run by Chris & Kim Golding 07867
flying insects!
SCUTTLEBROOK WAKE 2023
Well done to everyone who joined in the Scuttlebrook
Wake celebrations on June 3rd. Scuttlebrook only works
when the community turn out to participate and this year,
helped by some amazing weather, that is most certainly
what happened. There are lots of great memories from a
wonderful day, too many in fact to mention here, so we
hope these few excellent photos by Rachel Swallow will
serve as a reminder of what a proper Campden celebration
we all enjoyed.
I want to take this opportunity to praise the committee and
volunteers who made it all happen. Without them there would
be no Scuttlebrook and I am sure the whole community will
join me in thanking them for their hardwork and enthusiasm
for this most special of old Campden traditions. It’s a long
list but important that their contribution is acknowledged
and recognised. Apologies if I miss anybody!
The Scuttlebrook Wake Committee
Tim Sexton, Scott Gill, Emma Sexton, Wendy and Adrian
The Scuttlefest Team
Geoff and Paddy Carr, Jon Beynon, Jos Robinson, Adam
Mennell, Sarah Keyte, Marisa Devonshire and Jay Niblett.
Volunteers
Many volunteers supported the committee this year with
a range of jobs including stewarding road blocks, helping
with the Queen’s party, setting out road closures, collecting
blossom and much more besides. Rosie and Phil Gregory,
Stuart and Paula Nash and Chris Jones, Mary Doney and
Gill Greenwood, Andrew and Catherine Coward, Matthew
and Zoe Hall, Patrick Spink, Bill Rigg, Tom Clarkson and
the many members of the Morrey clan.
Sponsors and supporters
I would also like to thank Pete and Jane Gardner who so
kindly funded the commemorative spoons for this year’s
Queen and attendants. Special mention to Abbie Digweed
for the Floral Headbands and The Bay Tree for the flower
bouquets. Many thanks to Hartwells and Charlie Woolner
and his team for their combined work on the cart. Thank
you as well to Andy Timms and the firefighters for allowing
us to use the fire station once again to house and decorate
the cart.
Also a final thank you to our sponsors and supporters of
Scuttlefest 2023. Without their backing it would not have
been possible to put on the live music in the High Street
which has now become such an important part of the day.
Toke’s, Gooding Chartered Surveyors, Victors, the Town
Council, the Lygon Arms and W.R.Haines Ltd.
Finally congratulations also to Andy Norton and his team
for the amazing job they did organising Dover’s Games.
It’s a real pleasure to work with them all to put on this joint
weekend of events for the town. We will see you all again
The Aston Road ANPR camera is up and running but repeat offender reports are still not being sent to the Gloucester Constabulary
until the Town Council have signed the Service Level Agreement. The second and last chart below clearly demonstrates that
there is a speeding problem that must be tackled, but police won’t be writing to or visiting repeat offenders until that agreement
12 JUNE 2023
FREESTYLE!
With the cricket season now fully
up and running, the hot weather
of June is with us and at all levels,
Chipping Campden Cricket Club is
a buzz of activity. The men’s side
is about to embark on its regular tour of Sidmouth, again
playing at the stunning seafront ground that is also home
to much minor county cricket. And as a summer of Ashes
cricket kicks off at Edgbaston, Chipping Campden Cricket
Club looks forward to its very own England v Australia
‘Grey Ashes’ fixture at Station Road on Monday 24th July,
for a 50 over game starting at 1pm.
Thanks to the generosity of matchday sponsors, the game
will now be free to attend for everyone, so the club is
hoping for a bumper crowd to come and watch the game
and enjoy the facilities. Committee member Ian Harrison
noted: “It’s going to be a cracking day down at the ground
on the 24th. We’ve got the Cantamus choir in full voice, gin
bars, ice cream parlours, an all day BBQ and so much more
on site, as well as perfect sunshine which we’ve ordered too.
Thanks to the work of Ian Bishop, Alan Groves and so many
others, the ground looks fabulous and we look forward to
welcoming as many of you as possible on the day.”
COMMUNITY LUNCHES ROUND UP!
On 13th June we hosted our last Community Lunch in this
school year, and yet again it was a successful and enjoyable
occasion, with 35 people enjoying some delicious soup,
bread and
a variety of
desserts. Since
we started last
October, our
numbers have
varied from week
to week but we
have gradually
built up to an
average of 30 –
35 people. We
set up for 45 and
can increase to 60
or so over time
if we become
more popular. We
hosted 9 lunches
up to Lent (from
the beginning of
October)
including Tuesday 27th December, and then 4 more after
Easter. The 6 Lent Lunches during the Lent season were
also extremely popular and successful for the groups raising
funds on behalf of their respective charities.
The team has been superb, adapting and accommodating
various needs (allergies, mobility, general likes and dislikes!)
and each person brings something special to the occasion,
whether it is in terms of cooking, shopping, welcoming,
setting the room ready, doing the flowers, washing up,
giving lifts, etc etc. It all comes together and it works well.
Most of the food is cooked and donated on a voluntary basis
with some of the core stock items being a regular expense.
We had some set-up costs with fabric for tablecloths, signs
and posters etc, but essentially it is an initiative run by the
community for the community. It is free of charge but many
people like to make a donation in appreciation. This is not
expected but it is gratefully received. It has meant that we
have raised £1,300 net which is amazing. We have donated
£500 to St James’ Church and the rest has gone to the
Church Rooms for both costs of heating etc and towards the
refurbishment plans of the committee. Any future donations
will continue to be given to the Church Rooms. The Church
Rooms do not charge us for use for the lunches.
So we are back on 26th September – same time 12.30pm –
in the Church Rooms. Do tell your friends. We look forward
to seeing you in September if not before! If you have any
questions or want to get in touch, call Sarah on 07917
Pictured is the historic 1899 Bechstein that was owned by Charlie
Bennett from 1969-1999 and subsequently restored to its original
glory by Peter Salisbury. It came ‘home’ to Chipping Campden for
one night only for a special concert on May 13th. Many thanks to all
who sponsored both the cost of transporting it here and Peter’s work
preparing it for the concert.
It’s just over a month since the 2023 Music Festival came to a close and now the dust has settled a little I wanted
to thank everyone who was involved in making the festival such a success this year. That includes the trustees,
the brilliant festival team (most notably Jessica May & Sally Milles) who worked so hard putting the events on
the website, setting up the ticketing system, distributing programmes, processing sales, organising orchestra
auditions, arranging travel and accommodation for musicians, including ‘finding’ at very short notice a coach
to transport over 50 orchestra members to Chipping Campden when the trains were cancelled, and all the
extremely complicated logistics involved with musicians arriving from all over the world, plus all the day to day
tasks such as locking of the church each night, putting on and taking off the stage extension each day during
week 2, providing rehearsal refreshments, supplying and serving orchestra suppers, and the numerous other
tasks that go with running what has become a large and complex event.
Thanks also to the large group of volunteers who form the ushers team, help with ferrying artists to and from the
station, and those wonderful local residents who welcome musicians into their homes during the week when the
Festival Orchestra is in residence. A special thanks is owed to John Sanderson at Chipping Campden School for
generously waiving parking fees during the festival and alleviating what promised to be a significant problem
with up to 400 audience members all leaving the car park at the same time during the fortnight, with only one
payment machine available! And of course a massive thank you to all of you who came along in record numbers
to give us many sell out concerts during the fortnight.
Most of you will know that 2023 was my final festival in charge and from 2024 Tom Hull & Jessica May will be
running things. As I said at the final concert on May 20th “These 20 plus years have been crazy, exhausting,
sometimes frustrating, sometimes worrying, sometimes difficult, but ultimately a wonderful and fulfilling journey,
and thank you all for sharing it with me. If you wanted to return that ‘thank you’ then the very best way you could
do that would be to show Tom & Jessica and all the festival team the same level of support in future years that
you’ve shown me.”
The 2024 Festival will run from May 11th - 25th and Tom & Jessica will be announcing the programme shortly.
UPDATE
PLANNING & CONSERVATION MATTERS
A new Neighbourhood Development Plan Working Party
was formed last month and has met to agree how to take the
process forward with some urgency. The group comprises
Mark Benson (Chair), Patrick Spink, Michael Haines, and as
a non-Town Council member, David Roberts. Other members
of the public may well be asked to help in specific areas; and
The Campden Society has confirmed its willingness to help
where it can provide the necessary skills or expertise. The
key drive of the Working Party is to get the Neighbourhood
Development Plan approved as soon as possible.
We have recently alerted Cotswold District Council to what
we think may be a breach of planning laws for a change to
a property that we don’t believe has had Listed Building
Consent. We urge owners of listed buildings to check on
the Historic England website for details when considering
changes to their property - www.historicengland.org.uk.
QUAKERS’ MEETING
HOUSE
Just a reminder that you can visit
this fascinating building and enjoy
a cup of tea and slice of cake on
Sunday afternoons in July. The
Meeting House is a cottage built
of local Cotswold stone and was
converted in 1663, extended in
1677. The relatively early date is
evidence for a substantial Quaker
presence in the area during the
second half of the 17th century.
During 1874-1961, the building
was used for a range of different
purposes, including as a Baptist church hall before being
restored as a Meeting House. The interior retains a historic
stand and some historic panelling. The Broad Campden
Meeting House will be open throughout the month of July on
Sundays 2-5pm. All welcome including dogs.
THE ORCHARDEERS NEED YOU!
Donna Evans has sadly stepped down from our Sub
Committee due to increasing workload from her Community
First Responder role. Donna has been with us since we started
in 2020, so we would like to say a HUGE thank you to Donna
for all her hard work and
unflagging enthusiasm for
the Orchard and helping to
make it into the wonderful
community place that it is
now.
So, we are seeking a
person to join the Orchard
Sub Committee and take
on the role of Orchardeer
Organiser, to take care of our
volunteers’ communications.
Could you be that person?
It’s a fun position for
someone with a few hours
to offer each week. No horticultural expertise required! The
role is based around social media and emails to organise and
schedule our volunteers for work parties and events - it’s an
essential role in our team. If you are interested, or would
like to know a bit more, please contact Julianne for a chat on
AIR THEATRE COMPANY RETURNS
TO BLOCKLEY
Shakespeare’s comedy classic The Comedy of Errors is set
to delight Blockley audiences when an open-air production
is staged on Churchill Close in the centre of the village on
the evening of Saturday 8th July.
The production sees the return of the popular Gloucestershire
based professional theatre company Rain or Shine which
is celebrating its 25th anniversary and has been hailed by
The Stage newspaper as “one of the best companies touring
open air theatre”. Suitable for audiences from age 6 to 106,
Rain or Shine aims to bring classical theatre into the heart
of local communities as they travel across the country from
June until September.
Comedy of Errors tells how, by cruel fate, a family has been
torn asunder in a violent shipwreck.
The mother has
been lost to the
waves, the father
and one twin and
his bondsman
Chipping Campden Open Gardens, in June, was equally
spectacular. A huge thank you to all the garden owners who
opened their beautiful grounds to the public and everyone
who visited. We are grateful too, to celebrity gardener Martyn
Wilson, a silver winner at Chelsea this year for his wildlife
garden, who was delighted to find a rare Spotted Orchid
in the Jecca’s House garden. Most of all, thank you to the
Open Gardens committee – Elizabeth, Tracey, Teresa, Mark
and Sue for all their hard work and for supporting Campden
Home Nursing.
BLOOMING GREAT OPEN GARDENS
May and June was all about the blooming great open gardens
of Chipping Campden! The Shepherds Close Open Garden,
in May, was the best we’ve ever seen it. What a treat and
perfect weather too! A huge ‘thank you’ to Rita Down and
her talented team of gardeners and helpers, for opening this
hidden gem and raising £5,350 for Campden Home Nursing.
Thanks also to the 540 visitors who turned out to see these
three acres of imaginatively planted garden, as well as
Huxleys for the fabulous cakes and refreshments. Thank you
to everyone else who helped make this a very special day,
including Lisa Drinkwater, Maggie Clarke, Jane and George
Fenwick, the Rotary Club, Roger’s ex-students and all who
donated cakes and raffle prizes. Also, to the Haines family
who kindly permit parking in their field every year. We feel
blessed to have such support from our local community.
Rita opens Shepherds Close to the public every year in
memory of her husband, Roger, who was a passionate
gardener. Each year, Rita adds something new for visitors
to see, and this year the Meditative/Spiritual Garden made
its debut. Set in a quiet corner of the grounds, it featured a
beautiful pool, with a trickling brook, a Buddha statue and
butterflies and dragonflies which created a calm and peaceful
setting for quiet contemplation. It really was exquisite.
This year more of you than ever before bought tickets.
We had many sell out events, and a fantastic Festival
Saturday. There was something for everyone: live ballet,
live band, science demos, memoir, literary biography,
farming, nature and climate change, religion, poetry, film,
illustration, history, politics and current affairs. The age
range of audience was from 2 years to over one hundred
and everything in between!
Authors were from all over the UK, and Sally Hayden
flew in specially from Dublin.
In the audience were people from London, Birmingham,
and Oxford, from the USA and New Zealand.
We are indebted to the trustees of the Music Festival for their
support. We are also hugely grateful to our main venues:
the Montrose Suit, Cotswold House Hotel with John from
Clearsound Productions providing A/V; and Cidermill
Theatre, which – with comfortable raked seating, state of
the art technical equipment (thank you techie Laurence),
parking, bar, and Saturday cafe – worked a treat. And
thank you to Craig Bishop and Church Wardens for the
Friday morning event in St James’ Church; The Arthouse
Cinema for the Friday Film; and Ann Allen for the Poetry
Bandwagon.
A huge thank you to everyone, from other local businesses
and organisations to individuals – all too numerous to
mention by name – who gave financial and practical
support: accommodation, parking, and refreshments, and
to several interviewers who gave their time; to Borzoi
Bookshop and those of you who purchased books from the
Festival Book stall – without a book seller at every event
authors wouldn’t come to Campden. Thank you to Jane
Clarke for photographing the books, the book stack on the
front cover of the printed programme, the screen images
for each event, and the Co-op display (thank you Dee);
And to the Campden Bulletin for including our articles.
And last but by no means least a huge round of applause
to Sue Brereton and her wonderful Team of Ushers with
roving mic and travelling Box Office.
The generosity of so many of you enabled us to provide
complimentary tickets: Rozie T and twenty-five of her
students attended the Royal Ballet School event; Eighteen
Year 10 students and teachers came to the Kit de Waal
event because My Name Is Leon is now a GCE set text;
Year 12 Psychology students attended neuroscientist
Hannah Critchlow’s illustrated talk, two of them taking
part in experiments: ECG & Electric shock! Frances
Doran took five students to read their own poems at the
Poetry Bandwagon. Five music students attended the
Abbey Road event, and students were with parents at our
Saturday farming talk. And more than twenty comps were
given to Ukrainians living in Stratford upon Avon to
attend the Luke Harding event.
Plus comps were given to higher education students at
various evening events throughout the week.
The dates for 2024 are Monday 6th – Saturday 11th May.
Best wishes for a happy summer,
Vicky
The 2023 business and student awards, which are organised
and managed by the Campden Business Forum, will open for
nominations on Monday June 26th.
We believe these are the only awards in the country that
recognise existing businesses alongside student-run enterprises,
and this year we will celebrate organisations across the whole
of the north Cotswolds, with nominations welcome from both
the businesses themselves and their customers.
To vote please visit www.chippingcampden.com and follow
the awards links.
This year’s awards follow the 2022 awards, which were the
most successful run to date.
There were a greater number of entries than ever before, the
range of different businesses nominated was wider than seen
in previous years, and the awards ceremony was a major
triumph, thanks to the support of our host Loyd Grossman.
….and the plan is to make 2023 bigger and better than ever.
Some changes have been made to the award categories - and
we are delighted to welcome several new sponsors. A new
platform, called Friends of the Awards, has been introduced
which will enable more businesses and individuals to support
the awards. For further information on this please email
awards@chippingcampden.com
There is less than two weeks to go before voting opens, so
please start to think about who you want to nominate. Let’s
make this the best awards year ever!
Material Matters: contemporary craft practice by Queen
Elizabeth Scholarship Trust makers
QEST is a charity dedicated to supporting excellence in
British craftsmanship and since 1990 has awarded over £5.2
million to 700 makers, many of whom are leaders in their
field. Many QEST alumni continue to pass on their skills
and demonstrate a strong commitment to the British craft
industry. The charity funds makers who are undertaking
college courses, vocational training, apprenticeships with
master craftsmen and more.
We are delighted to present the work of eight talented makers
who have benefited from the charity’s support. The scholars
in this exhibition work in Gloucestershire and neighbouring
counties. All are highly skilled in their field and funding
from QEST has enabled them to expand their knowledge by
working with master craftsmen and exploring new techniques
which take their practice to the next level.
Admission included in museum entry fee
Pollo a la Vizcaina
chicken basque style
Some of you will remember Barry Kettle who for many years lived in Leysbourne.
He was a retired architect who, as a second career, became a renowned wine merchant, at one
point supplying Spanish wines to Harrods. Amongst his clients was also John Arlott, iconic cricket
commentator as well as being wine correspondent for the Guardian.
The annual wine tastings of Arriba Kettle & Co. were held locally and were always great fun.
His winter list generally had a couple of recipes, often recommended by his wine growers and
which Barry had tried-and-tested in his small galley-style kitchen at home.
Here’s one suitable for the summer.
Ingredients
1 large chicken
1/2 lb (225g) sliced ham
Chorizo (optional)
1 onion, choped
1 crushed clove garlic
5 tomaroes, peeled and chopped
5 red peppers, chopped
Olive oil
Salt & pepper
Method
Cut the chicken into pieces.
Fry the garlic at high temperature until brown. Remove from pan. Season.
Fry the pieces of chicken until golden, add the onions and ham and cook for a few minutes.
Add the peppers and tomatoes and simmer for 1 - 11/2 hours or until tender.
Optional: Fry quickly some disks of Chorizo, say 1/4” (6mm) thick, and add at the end.
Serve with rice.
Wine match
Should, of course, be Spanish but many wines will suit, according to your preferences - from Albarino whites to
Tempranillo and Rioja reds.
The Bulletin’s
monthly columnist:
JB
The vocal minority and the silent majority
Silence is golden, as granny would say. This is true when travelling in the
‘quiet’ carriage or anywhere ringtones break into the otherwise peaceful
moment. Annoyingly, some people use the app which gives out the name
of the caller when the phone rings. There are circumstances which make
this feature useful but, in general use, it’s a nuisance. A solution I was told
recently, used by one teenager to counter the embarrassment inflicted on him
(notionally, as obviously he wasn’t present) every time his mother’s phone
rang, announcing to all nearby the cute pet name she used for him. He changed
the caller id to announce, ‘your drug dealer.’ Novel, but no doubt effective.
Sadly, noise is often rewarded. Nationally, the work of the vocal minority has
been successful in influencing policy and consequently some big things have
or haven’t happened. Some good, some questionable. Net zero is an absolute
must, if possible, but the race to net zero and some of the daft timelines,
pressure groups have got politicians to sign up to, just don’t add up. No
new fossil fuel engines from 2030 is a stupid target which I am confident
will be ‘reviewed’ soon. The principal is laudable and yes it has galvanised
motor manufacturers into looking at alternatives, including hydrogen, as well
as driving the uptake of electric. A huge battery factory is expected to be
announced in Somerset as we don’t currently have the capability to produce
the, eh, well, current, required, especially as there is now a hole under the
bonnet, where an engine once sat. No doubt, to great fanfare, and photo
opportunities, politicians will model in hi viz, trying to look normal, hoping
we all feel a rush of delight and for a boost to the economy, with the creation
of valuable jobs for the highly skilled as well as on the shop floor.
Ambling along the High Street I found myself thinking, come the revolution,
how the heck will residents charge their cars? I can’t see how the local
landscape will cope with a proliferation of charging points or clever gadgets
built into the road surface. Or at least not in the next decade. So, the silent
majority will have to stir and get the environmentalists, the scientists, the
policy makers and the car and engine makers to agree a sensible way forward,
which delivers for the world and the people.
The same is true for new housing with political parties throwing around
target figures for new home construction and nimby’s (the vocal minority)
threatening this, that and the other, if more houses are built in areas such as
ours. Chipping Campden is not some grand gated community, it’s a vibrant
town which needs appropriate investment decisions, to secure its future for
everyone and that’s not something which should be left to be decided by
the few. Of course, more houses should be built here, but this should be
done using sense, to ensure the much-needed homes ‘fit’ the needs of the
community and the surroundings. Considerate and sympathetic designs and
materials should complement each other. Again, the silent majority need their
voice heard to ensure investment in the area, to keep it alive and thriving and
not wilting.
The vocal minority in Campden are being bullish, about the land adjacent
to the War Memorial. I don’t care much for people throwing their weight
around, trying to intimidate others, to get their own way. The vote by the
Trustees of the land was clear and as some would say in these parts, get off
my land!
If you’ve been silent so far, I suggest you change your app.
TAKES A LOOK
WHAT HAPPENED IN JUNE…
What a lovely month we have had here at Cidermill Theatre!
We had two brilliant National Theatre Live screenings
beginning with the political thriller Best of Enemies and
finishing with the hilarious Fleabag, starring Phoebe Waller-
Bridge. We were delighted to host two sold-out talks as part
of the Broadway Arts Festival. The legendary Sue Barker
shared the remarkable story of her life and art historian
Loyd Grossman discussed his wonderful new book on
Paris as well as many of his other fascinating travels. We
were also really pleased to be the host venue for Reach
for the Stars, part of the Chris Treglown Foundation Fund
that provides funds to help young aspiring singers reach
their dreams. It was a wonderful evening of talented young
singers competing for prizes as well as two West End stars
showcasing their talents.
Recycle Roundabout
No 7 Blackminster Business Park,
Birmingham Road, Evesham Tel: 833030
A charity that is at work in your community, helping to improve the
lives of local people in difficult circumstances. Since 1994 we have
been collecting unwanted donated furniture in good usable condition,
to supply to those amongst us who are encountering hard times.
ST JAMES’ CHURCH REPAIR CAFE
On a fine summers day, we welcomed a bumper crowd
of visitors to the cafe, including this time two American
tourists who were fascinated to observe and join us for a
coffee and refreshments.
They knew of no similar scheme where they live in the
States, and were full of enthusiasm for the idea. They
certainly got the sustainability message. Wouldn’t it be
great if our little efforts here in the Cotswolds spread
‘across the pond’.
This was a morning of variety.
A resident of the neighbouring village of Broad Campden
brought in the village notice board for some TLC.
Originally skilfully made by another resident in oak, 20
years of Cotswold weather had made its mark, the wood
needing thoroughly cleaning down, varnishing and some
of the rotted support wood replacing. We often partner
with Men in Sheds, at Jeccas House on the Aston Road,
and some work will be done there to the sign.
Into Men in Sheds came this Triang Rocking horse,
needing some input from our welding team as a stirrup
had come loose, plus repainting the metal. When finished
it has been donated to Campden Home Nursing – so keep
an eye on the charity shop!
Other items include a gentleman’s late Victorian silver
topped briar wood cane snapped at the base. We will
probably pin it to retain the character, although again at
Men in Sheds a new client is a briar cane maker so we may
call on his skills.
Referred on to a specialist was this lovely Steiff teddy bear,
about 70 years old, in very good condition but needing
new pads and a bit of a clean.
All our volunteers are enthusiastic amateurs, perhaps with
some specialist skills or interests, and we take care to refer
to specialists when an amateur should not attempt repairs,
as in this case.
Of course as ever the electricals table was busy – a variety
of table lamps as usual, radios, including a 1960’s Bush
radio, still working but needing a good clean and a mend
to the handle
PAT testing is free of charge on all electrical items we look
at. Sometimes items fail, but this too is a valuable service
to ensure safety, and sometimes justifies the owner sending
it to be recycled as nothing further can be done.
All our work is free of charge, as are the refreshments.
Materials used in repair work can either be provided by the
client, or simply paid for at cost. Donations can be made
towards our running costs but are not obligatory.
The next repair cafe at the Church Rooms, on the
corner of Church Street and Calf Lane, is on July 8th,
10am to 12.30pm. Do come along, enjoy a delicious
selection of refreshments whilst you wait and a chat with
like minded people - whether you have an item to repair
or not.
WOULD-BE REPAIRERS - GET IN TOUCH we’d
always be pleased to add more skills
Perhaps it’s a hobby at the moment but could you put your
skills to community use?
Particular skills needed are:
Mechanical clock repairers (a very popular request)
Book binders
Electricians to aid with PAT testing and repairs – always in
high demand
It was resolved to suspend standing orders at 19.32.
• At the CCTC meeting, 11 April 2023, GB quoted latest
CiL receipts for Chipping Campden as £7k+ when they
actually stand at more than £17k? Are there any planned
projects? It is a lot of money and needs to used within five
year from receipt. Maybe another ANPR?
• There has been no mention as to how the Council vacancies
are to be filled.
• There is still a lot of paperwork to fill in for the Aston
Road ANPR. The reporting template has been requested.
committee, circulated to Council, for note – no report.
• GCC were to put a WP together to put Aston Road pathway
To consider three quotations for 2 tonne x 2” clean stone
right and make safe – cut the grass back and make the path
required minimum is 10 tonne) – it was resolved to defer
- Last council did not want kerbing. Would the new council
and carry out a suitability check of the recommended 40mm
consider kerbing to maintain edges?
MOT stone (smaller stone breaks down and gravel just pulls
whacker plate could have insurance implications.
LETTER-WRITING GROUP
Our group meets regularly through the year, writers choosing
from carefully researched cases comprising Amnesty’s
Individuals at Risk list current at the time of meeting.
We welcome occasional writers - every letter adds to the
pressure on a particular case. Many individuals detained in
contravention of the UN Declaration of Human Rights have
testified after release to the invaluable support of letters
written to the appropriate authorities on their behalf.
We meet at Clifton House, High Street, Chipping Campden,
Quick tips for a financial health check
Written by Rebecca Daly, Financial Paraplanner
If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that nothing
stays the same for long. From lockdowns and furloughs to the
cost-of-living crisis and the highest inflation rate seen for 40
years, each of us each will have been affected differently. Right
now, with so much uncertainty about the future, our financial
health is more important than ever. Here we set out our toptips
on how best to get a grip on your finances:
Get to grips with your income and outgoings
Whatever your position, it’s important to know how much of
your hard-earned money is going where. We have developed
a Budget Planner which is available on our website, www.
broadwayfp.co.uk/resources, which will help you get started
on assessing your current income and expenses, perhaps
in more detail than you’ve done before. This can help in
identifying any areas that need addressing. Alternatively,
there are many apps available that can link to your bank and
do all the hard work for you by categorising your spending as
it happens.
Manage your debt before it manages you
Whilst rising interest rates are great news for savers, they can
cause huge misery for those managing debt. For any debt
you can’t pay off with savings, where possible move it to a
0% deal such as a balance transfer card. If you can’t meet the
minimum payments on your debt, explain your difficulties to
“I CANNOT RECOMMEND KERI
AND HER TEAM HIGHLY ENOUGH”
Broadway Financial Planning is an awardwinning
Financial Planning firm who specialises
in providing solutions for:
• EARLY RETIREES
• TRUSTS AND TRUSTEES
• WIDOWS AND DIVORCEES
Our four top-level services are:
• CASH FLOW PLANNING
• INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT
• TAX & ESTATE PLANNING
• RETIREMENT PLANNING
ABOUT US
From our base in the beautiful Cotswold village
of Broadway, we offer impartial and bespoke
Financial Planning advice to clients from across
the UK.
WHY US?
In a life that’s full of twists and turns, Broadway
Financial Planning is here to help you find
your way. For over 25 years, our caring and
experienced Financial Planning professionals
have been doing just that – delivering a truly
bespoke, award-winning service to clients who
want to get the most out of life and their money.
your creditors. Most corporations have dedicated support in
place for those that need extra help, so don’t be ashamed to
avail of it.
If you have savings as well as debt that you’re paying interest
on (separate to your emergency fund), you may want to
review this. Getting rid of the interest from a credit card for
example ( now typically charging over 25%) will far outweigh
the interest earned on the same money in a savings account
(typically around 4%). List all your debts and prioritise using
any savings or spare cash to reduce the most expensive debt
each month.
Emergency Fund
As we now well know, unexpected events and expenses can
happen to anyone, at any time. As a general rule of thumb,
you should try to keep approximately three to six months’
worth of expenses in an easy access account. This has the
purpose of supporting you if things go wrong whilst allowing
you to avoid accumulating more debt. For our most recent
recommendations on the easy access accounts with the top
interest rates, visit our website www.broadwayfp.co.uk/newsand-views.
Don’t neglect your pension
When times get tough it may be tempting to try and save
money by reducing or pausing pension contributions. You
should think carefully before doing this because opting out of
your pension could have a huge impact on the amount you
live on when you retire, and really must be an absolute last
resort. Not only would you be missing out on the government
25% top on each contribution, but many employers now offer
to match your level of contributions, which is essentially free
money towards your retirement.
What would happen if you weren’t here tomorrow?
If you weren’t here tomorrow, is everything in place for your
affairs and estate to be handled according to your wishes?
It’s estimated that up to 60% of people do not have a Will in
place. If you die without one, your estate will be distributed
according to the strict laws of intestate, meaning the people
you care about may lose out and your beneficiaries may end
up paying more tax than necessary! Being disorganised can
also cause family members added and unnecessary stress at
an already difficult time.
In addition, you don’t have to actually pass away for things to
become complicated. In the event that you become ill, lose
mental capacity, or feel like you’re just not up to managing
some things anymore, without a Lasting Power of Attorney
(LPA) in place for both financial and health and welfare
decisions, those that you trust the most (even your spouse)
won’t be in a position to help you. LPAs can only be put in
place by you when you have mental capacity and can be a
lengthy and costly process to put in place once needed. You
can do this online without the need for a solicitor at https://
www. gov.uk/power-of-attorney
At BFP, we are passionate about bringing clients the peace
of mind that comes with having your financial affairs in
order. While it’s important to accept that you cannot control
everything, having the above covered can make you feel more
prepared for whatever may be around the corner.
TRAVEL WITH MERV
I thought this month I would give you an update on what I
have been up to and a couple of my most recent trips.
At the end of May I took a solo trip on a yacht style cruise
from Tower Bridge in London to Greenock in Scotland
which was breathtaking with magnificent scenery, calm seas
and glorious sunsets along the way.
Ponant cruises have a small fleet of 5 star ships on average
around 95 cabins along with 112 crew to look after you every
step of the way. Exuding French flair, style, sophistication
and food and drink which is included in the price. On this
particular cruise, we sailed along the Jurassic Coast towards
Dartmouth. As the ship is quite small we were able to dock
just a stone’s throw from the main town on the River Dart.
Onwards to the Scilly Isles which I was very much looking
forward to visiting for the first time. We docked at St Mary’s
and took a long walk taking in the breath taking scenery
and beaches, wildlife and flowers. I have arranged trips to
Scilly Iles many times for customers and now I can see why
it is so popular and a must come back to destination for me.
Onwards to Dublin, a European city I have never been to and
found out I quite like Guinness! Somehow it tastes different
in Ireland, especially in a traditional pub with live music. We
set sail for Belfast in the evening and had a full day here. I
wanted to revisit the magnificent Titanic museum as I hadn’t
been since 2012. It is still impressive and the whole area has
now been redeveloped and definitely worth a trip or a short
city break. Finally across the Irish sea to Greenock and we
could have been in the Caribbean as the seas were calm with
a glorious sunset. We had dinner on deck as it didn’t get dark
until around 10pm.
Ponant features a lot of itineraries without any single
supplements which can save £££ and is perfect for a solo
traveller. Cabins are beautifully furnished with lots of space
too to relax as well as a lovely sun deck with pool.
They sail to some of the world’s most beautiful destination
including Europe, the Caribbean, Antarctic, South America
and the Pacific Islands.
I very much liked Ponant and I could definitely recommend
them, especially if you like small ship cruises and some
unusual itineraries.
I was home for two days then jetted off on holiday to Crete.
We chose Chania on the Western side of the island which is
less commercialised with beautiful towns and villages. We
stayed in Alymirida for a couple of days before heading into
the hills in a villa away from the coast for a week. The villa
was designed and built by an architect which was certainly
his pride and joy. Pretty quirky but a wonderful location
very quiet and traditionally Greek. The villa had the most
wonderful views of the mountains and in the distance you
could just about make out the coast line. We took a drive to
the South coast of Crete, not really known for being a holiday
hotspot with a few small villages. But this area has the most
dramatic scenery, perfect for hiking and walkers (the Samara
Gorge is located in this area). The coastline reminded me of
Thailand with crystal blue waters, small coves and beaches.
We hired a boat to visit this coastline and this was certainly a
highlight for me.
If you would like any more information on Ponant cruises or
Crete or indeed any other destination please get in touch and
I can help you to plan your next trip.
EBRINGTON WI
JUNE REPORT
The meeting opened with the singing of
Jerusalem, after which the president and
secretary gave a round-up of recent activities. The outing
to the Royal Mint and St Fagan’s National Museum was
greatly enjoyed and the secretary was thanked for organising
it so well. Those members who had offered to bake for the
Three Counties Show were reminded when and where their
cakes would be accepted. We were asked to get jamming
and pickling to stock the W I stall at the Ebrington Fete on
8th July and to help with providing tea for Campden History
Society who will visit the village in August for a tour of the
locations featured in the recent, very successful presentations
of old photographs by local historians and W I members
Margaret Fisher and Pearl Mitchell. As part of The Great Big
Green Week we held a ‘Swap Shop’ in the Village Hall this
month for a ‘cashless’ exchange of items. The float entered
for Scuttlebrook procession, ‘Here Come the Kings’ was
awarded 2nd prize.
Our speaker, Pamela Holland, painted an amusing and
interesting picture of her career as a travel rep in different
roles and various countries. Some of the ‘complaints’ clients
had seemed to revolve around the fact that ‘abroad was
different’ and not to their liking!
Our next meeting will be on Thursday July 13th, 7.00pm
in the Village Hall when our speaker will be Alistair Price,
“What Did You Do in the War Dad?”
GARDENING CLUB
It’s busy time of the year in the garden - everything
is growing so fast but the dry weather is causing
problems.
It’s also a busy time for the club. We have a visit to Moor
Wood Garden towards the end of June. The garden is
the home of the National Collection of Rambler Roses.
Saturday the 8th July sees the annual village Fete at
which the club runs a plant stall.
Our annual Flower and Vegetable Show will take
place on Saturday 12th August at Washbrook Barn
in Ebrington opening at 2.00pm. This is a traditional
village show with over 130 classes including flowers,
vegetables, fruit, floral art, cookery, photography,
crafts and children’s classes. Everyone is welcome to
come and see the show in the afternoon.
MICKLETON
GARDENING CLUB
Summer has arrived and what beautiful weather we’ve had!
It’s lovely to be able to enjoy the lighter nights, having more
time in the garden to keep on top of the maintenance and
watching the garden come to life, changing every day.
We have been busy this month finalising the preparations for
our Summer Flower, Produce and Handicraft show, which
will take place on Saturday 26th August at King George’s
Hall.
The show welcomes entries in a wide range of categories
from the wonkiest fruit or veg to the baking of a cappuccino
cake made to a recipe.
This year, we have introduced a Community Wildflower
category, which is open to everyone. We have collaborated
with the Butchers Arms where you can go and collect some
free seeds to grow and submit a photo of your creation into
the show. Pop in and see Michelle so you can get started. We
cannot wait to see the entries.
Look out for the show programme in local stores or via the
website.
We will release photos of our Open Gardens evening in the
next edition. The Young Gardeners group are also hosting a
plant sale on the same day so we are in for a treat.
Our next meeting takes place on Wednesday 19th July where
Alun & Jill Whitehead, who are the former holders of the
National Collection of Siberian Irises, will discuss Irises for
the Natural Garden.
Come along to the King George’s Hall, Mickleton at 7pm.
Entrance is free for members and guests can join us for £3
on the door.
Membership costs just £15 for the year (now reduced to
£10 until January 2024) and gives you free admission to
GARDEN NOTES FOR JULY
“Every garden should have some water”, I remember reading some years ago;
and they didn’t mean water-butts or taps, desirable as they are. Well, yes, a pond
can be nice, but it is quite high-maintenance, and in some cases there may be
safety concerns. All sorts of fancy water features are available, some with a
solar-powered fountain or circulation system. But the article was realistic and
suggested that one could be content with something as simple as an old halfbarrel
with a small water-lily in it (and there are small-growing varieties as well
as monsters: check before buying). It sounded
a good idea to me, and I can report that I am
content; at least once I solved the problem that an
old half-barrel seems not to remain water-tight
for long. I tried lining it with heavy polythene,
but it wasn’t much of a success. Then I thought
of those plastic things (whatever they are called),
about the height of a bucket but rather wider and
with a handle each side. I measured carefully and
was delighted to find that it would be a snug fit
inside the barrel, both height and diameter as if
made-to-measure. The great thing about being a pessimist is that you get happy
surprises.
I think at this time of year I usually urge you to have a poke around your local
plant centre to see what you can find to fill the gaps in flower beds that appear
around mid-summer. It is such good advice that I repeat it now. There won’t be
as wide a selection as there was a few weeks ago, but you should still find plenty
of choice if you go with an open mind. Even a few plants can refresh the look of
your garden for weeks ahead.
This is the time of year for sowing some biennials and perennials, also for sowing
some of the quicker growing vegetables which can fill gaps as earlier crops like
broad beans and early potatoes come out. Some vegetables (Florence Fennel, for
example) are very likely to bolt if sown earlier in the year; but sow them just as
the days begin to shorten and in a season with reasonable warmth, moisture and
sunlight they will grow fast. You might like to try Pak Choi or Chinese Cabbage,
or make successional sowings of lettuce or carrots.
A few years ago friends were marrying, with the reception in their garden (and
it did stay dry). Some of us were asked to come a day or two early to help with
the cooking. Not me, of course. My job was the garden. At various points there
were rather narrow gaps between shrubs, from one area to another. These gaps
needed widening. Someone (and he does a big of odd-job gardening) wondered
how I managed not to make it look raw and newly-hacked back. The answer: I
saw it more as pruning than hedge-cutting. Rather than taking off twelve inches
all over, which is more or less hedge-cutting means, I selected the longest shoots
and cut them back well into the bush at a joint, while leaving the shorter shoots
uncut. Think about it. It works.
