COMMUNITY NEWSNationwide Truro -Community ChampionsSt Petrocs have been awarded anamazing donation of £50,000 fromNationwide Community Grants tosupport people into a home and outof homelessness for good in Cornwall.The project primarily supports people whoare experiencing homelessness, or facinghomelessness into a home. Once a person is intheir home, the person is then further supportedto thrive, providing foundations for moving on intheir lives and out of homelessness for good.This happens through two parts:First of all, the individual who is homeless willengage with our first port of contact via aHomeless Engagement Worker. Throughpersonally tailored 1-1s (providing assessments ofneeds, advice, advocacy, support, food, clothing)Truro Blue JaysThere is a new sport in Cornwall in theheart of Truro. When cornish peoplethink about taking up a new hobby,baseball is unlikely to spring to mindIt’s an American game - right? Played across theStates and Canada, but not Cornwall. That’s whereyou might be pleasantly surprised. The Truro BlueJays were established by the British-born, butCanadian-raised, Wood family, who returned toEngland last year with a dream of setting up abaseball team. Formed in the autumn of 2022,the team now has 40 members and is playingits inaugural season in the West CountryBaseball League. Thanks to a partnership withTruro City Council, the club plays its home gamesat Boscawen Park.The team is for both genders of any age andability; in fact the co-educational element is a bigpart of the team ethos, as is a commitment toencourage women into sport. The HeadCoach and Chair(man) are both female.the individual will be supported with securingaccommodation.Once in their home, St Petrocs will supportthem to thrive. This will be achieved throughdevelopment sessions of care, support,supervision of residents in our accommodation,providing access to our employment and trainingprogramme.The goal is to provide the support required forSt Petrocs’ clients to find a permanent route outof homelessness. Development sessions willbe provided on a holistic basis, with regularitydetermined between the worker and theindividual. It’s a no one size fits all approach,and support is tailored to the individualsneeds. The development sessions will helpbuild confidence and access opportunities forengagement, employment and experience.The team has a handful of Americans andCanadians but all members are new to the game.Players must be 14 or over, but under-14s can(and do) come along and train.The Blue Jays are more than a team. They havefostered such a positive and friendly approach totraining that they have created new friendshipsbetween team mates, great memories, and aboveall, a real commitment: ‘it doesn’t matter howgood or inexperienced you are, everyone canenjoy baseball.’So, if you are thinking of a new hobby, somethingto get you active, something completely different,why not contact us and come along.
