The ‘H’ word… 

HEMA, which stands for ‘2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate’, is an 

important ingredient found in many gel polish formulations. 

It serves a crucial purpose in gel polishes because it helps 

ensure proper adhesion to the natural nail. 

HEMA is responsible for the bonding process during application. 

It creates a strong and durable bond between the 

gel and the nail plate, which is vital for the longevity of the 

manicure, as it helps prevent lifting or peeling of the polish. 

Furthermore, HEMA also contributes to the flexibility of the 

gel polish. It allows the gel to conform to the natural curve 

and movements of the nail without becoming brittle or easily 

damaged. This flexibility adds to the overall durability of the 

manicure and reduces the likelihood of cracking or chipping. 

However, it’s no secret that HEMA has recently received a 

bit of bad press! We want to assure you that a low level 

of HEMA in professional products is completely normal. 

Of course, it’s worth noting that this ingredient can cause 

sensitisation in a small number of individuals, or in very rare 

cases, allergic reactions. 

However, as a trained nail technician, you will be well aware 

of the importance of using these products responsibly, 

following proper application and removal procedures to 

minimise any risks.
