Online Access to GP records
The NHS wants to give people better ways to see their
personal health information online. From October 31st
we will enable patients over 16 years of age to see more
information from their health record. If patients are over
16 and have an online account, such as through the NHS
App, NHS website, or other GP online services and apps,
they will now automatically be able to see all future
information entered on their medical record.
This means that you will be able to see records from your
appointments, as well as test results and any letters that are
saved on your records. This only applies to records from
your doctor, not from hospitals or other specialists. You
will only be able to see information from 31st October
2023. For most people, access will be automatic, and you
won’t need to do anything.
Your doctor (GP) may talk to you to discuss test results
before you are able to see some of your information on the
app. Your doctor (GP) may also talk to you before you are
given full record access to make sure that having access
is of benefit to you. If you are concerned that seeing your
records is not right for you, please let us know and we will
remove this access. The changes only apply to medical
information about yourself.
These changes only apply to people with online accounts.
If you do not want an online account, you can still access
your GP health record by requesting this information via
our secretary [or requesting via our surgery website query
form]. These requests take up to 30 days to process.
Although the NHS App, website and other online services
are all very secure, you’ll need to make sure you protect
your login details. Do not share your password with
anyone as they will then potentially have access to your
personal medical information.
If you would like more information about these changes,
you can read more by going to www.nhs.uk/gp-record.
You can also check common abbreviations used by the
NHS via the NHS app help and support website:
WE
OUR HOLLYHOCKS!
Hollyhocks can grow (almost thrive) in cracks of a wall
or pavement in sunny locations and can self-seed. They
cleverly develop very long tap-roots to search out water and
nutrients.
Campden Bulletin readers love them too - as do bees! A few
comments from locals who have seen this year’s wonderful
specimens:
“Beautiful I love seeing them” ... HJ
“All part and parcel of Chipping Campden, love them”
... MH
“I used to take walks just to see the Hollyhocks” ... KK
“I love them” ... LH
“They’ve been there a long time ... wow” ... GW
“Don’t tell me they are trying to get rid
of them too!” ... CW
How long have Hollyhocks adorned
our High Street?
The Birmingham Post calendar for 1975*
featured them on the front cover,
“summertime in Chipping Campden
with hollyhocks blooming against the
ageless background of Cotswold stone”.
A Campdonian clearly remembers
them in the sixties.
Has anyone longer memories -
if so please let us know.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
We welcome your contributions.
Email: editor@campdenbulletin.co.uk
Dear Editor
Congratulations for your coverage of Scuttlebrook Wake with
all the photographs. I would like to thank all the volunteers
who always make this such a memorable event which, when
watching this tear’s festivities, took me back to when I was
one of the country dancers from St. Catherine’s school when
things resumed after being shut down by Hitler.
I have only one minor quibble. Some time ago I was
approached by Graham Greenall who told me that Dover’s
Games would like a trophy to be awarded to a person or
organisation that had personified the spirit of Robert Dover
in the previous year. I agreed to do this, partly from a selfish
desire to use this to honour my late wife and my mother, but
also, by commissioning something different from the Harts,
showcase their skills and produce something that might bring
publicity to the event and the Town.
The Harts met my desires by producing a silver replica of
the Market Hall. It was awarded this year to the Campden
School pupils who raised a large sum of money for the Air
Ambulance following the road accident deaths of some of
their peers. They were worthy winners and I was glad to see
that Paddy Sexton the most of the presentation of the trophy
to them. However, who remembers the only other recipients
from last year? Equally deserving, the Cunynghames had
organised a delivery service for Campden’s house bound
during lockdown. Their presentation was rather low key and
my understanding is that the trophy was taken back off them
following the presentation.
I was reluctant to raise this matter, since it could be seen as
self advertising for “my trophy”, but I feel that the community
has missed the chance to really honour the recipients,
showcase the skills of our silversmiths and get publicity for
the Town. The silver Market Hall has yet to appear in the Co-
Op window and is absent from the photo of the other trophies
in the Bulletin. I would welcome a change.
Bill Buckland
Dear Editor
Though the Bulletin could I please thank all the people who so
generously donated to the ‘Jam Jar Tombola’, for Ebrington
fete, also to everyone who bought tickets.
We made more this year than any other - £205 - a fantastic
amount made possible by all the donations. Thank you all.
Thank you also to Abbie, Emily Jennie and Keith for all your
help and hard work.
Yours sincerely, Rosemary Woodward
Dear Editor
I have witnessed on several occasions people sitting on the
memorial steps eating and drinking also children running up
and down and around the memorial, this cannot be right - I
believe this shows total disrespect to those soldiers who gave
there lives fighting for there country.
The trust who manage the memorial area should reconsider
and fence off the actual memorial, and then allow Micheal’s
restaurant to put tables and chairs on the green, I am sure
Micheal’s would pay or contribute to the cost, this would
solve both problems - the protection of the memorial and
allow a few tables on the grassed area which would benefit
the local residents and tourists.
4
War memorial
Hello, I was in Broadway yesterday (Sunday 23/7/23) and
saw the way they have dealt with people sitting, eating and
drinking on the step of the war memorial - they have very
discreetly used a chain with black metal posts to fence off
the war memorial to stop people disrespectfully using it as a
seating area (see photo).
This would be the answer to our war
memorial in Chipping Campden also
at a very low cost, would appreciate
if you could forward a copy to the
war memorial trust members, as I
have seen people many time eating
and drinking on the steps of our war
memorial as well as children playing
running up and down and around the
memorial steps this is disrespectful.
Best regards
Barry Warwick (CC resident)
Dear Editor
I am writing this letter as I really don’t understand why
Michael’s has been refused table and chairs on a piece of
green space near the war memorial.
I have lived in Campden for quite a few years now and on
many occasions have seen people actually sitting around the
memorial itself having there picnics and drinks - this is surely
disrespectful! (I have photos to prove my point should you
feel the need to see).
By allowing Michael’s to have a few tables on this space gives
the town a really lovely lively feel, seeing people come and
enjoy our town has to be a good thing.
Your sincerely
J Westwood

Dear Editor
I do find it sad that Chipping Campden High Street and
its surrounding roads are blighted by so many weeds. It’s
unsightly and makes for an unkempt appearance. This town is
cited as a ‘jewel in the Cotswold crown’ and we, as residents,
are obliged by both county and district councils to adhere
to certain protocols and principles. Yet the very people who
govern us conveniently overlook that this is a conservation
area and one that should be cared for, nurtured and cherished.
Equally we as residents and business owners need to face up
to our collective civic responsibility and where necessary
take positive action to care and protect our town.
We are all fortunate enough to live here and I would hope
would wish to keep Chipping Campden tidy. Why would we
want anything else?
M Schlote
Dear Editor
Can I mention weeds in Campden High St again? Will owners
of properties - houses or shops - pull up and clear the weeds
and grass outside their properties or in the pavements? Weeds
make Campden look so uncared for and unkempt. It is not a
good image for the town and we need action.
WARM WELCOME
IN
PONT-D’OUILLY
The warmest of welcomes greeted visitors from Chipping
Campden and District Twinning Association on their recent
visit to Pont-d’Ouilly. As temperatures rose above 30°C the
members of the group, which included the Chair and Vice-
Chair of the Town Council and others visiting Pont-d’Ouilly
for the first time, were treated with lavish hospitality by
their French hosts.
Highlights of the weekend included a tour of the historic
town of Bayeux with visits to its beautiful cathedral and
the stunning Bayeux Tapestry. On the next day came the
opening in Pont-d’Ouilly of the Promenade Chipping
Campden, a new riverside walkway named in honour of the
40th anniversary of twinning with Chipping Campden.
At a civic reception to mark the anniversary our French
friends emphasised their support for recent moves to
revitalise twinning with new links between schools,
young families and youth groups. The Headteacher of
St Catharine’s School, Joanne Welch, joined us in Pontd’Ouilly
later on Sunday especially to take part in meetings
to pursue these links.
Members of the group visited Pont-d’Ouilly’s Base de
Loisirs, which has developed over 40 years from a local
canoeing club into a most impressive facility. Today it’s a hub
for cultural and entertainment events and a national kayaking
centre offering a range of outdoor activities and a variety of
accommodation for youth groups and
young families. Our youngest group
member (aged 6) clearly enjoyed the
high-rope treetop adventure course.
Looking
ahead,
we have
already
pencilled
in dates
for a
return
visit to the
Base de
Loisirs in
May 2025 when
our schools will be on half-term
holiday and the Base de Loisirs
will be hosting Pont-d’Ouilly’s
annual Festival of the Ascension.
The last day of our visit included a meeting with the
headteacher of the Primary School in Pont-d’Ouilly to
follow up on recent Zoom conversations with St Catharine’s
School and discuss plans for educational co-operation
between the two schools. Individual pupils have been paired
up with each other where parents have given their consent
and both headteachers have agreed to explore ways to link
their French and English classwork in the next school year.
In 2024 we hope some of our new young friends from
Pont-d’Ouilly will join us in Chipping Campden. It will
also be the 80th anniversary of what we call the Normandy
landings and the French know as la Libération. In war and
peace our two communities have forged close and enduring
ties. We thank our hosts for their generous hospitality and
look forward to welcoming them next year.
For more information about twinning and our plans for 2024
and 2025, please contact Reg Pritchard, Chipping Campden
Readers may have gathered from
the reports and correspondence
in the Bulletin, that this year’s
Annual Parish Meeting for
Chipping Campden wasn’t
exactly a ‘ride-in-the-park’.
We find deep in the archives,
though, a hundred years ago,
the townsfolk were equally
challenging over the activities of
the Town Trust:
CAMPDEN
PARISH MEETING
The annual assembly of the parish
meeting was held at the Town
Hall, Campden, on Monday. Mr
George Ebborn, chairman of the
Parish Council, presiding. A fair
number of electors also attended.
At the annual assembly last year a
resolution was passed requesting
the Town Trust, out of courtesy,
to present their accounts to the
next annual parish meeting.
The Chairman explained that the late Secretary of the Trust
had resigned and his successor, only having been appointed
that evening, had not the figures available. Mr Cox
enquired how the information was to be obtained as, being
a public body with a considerable income, he thought full
information should be available to all interested persons.
Several members of the Town Trust who were present stated
that they would arrange for the accounts to be published and
also for the meetings of the Trust being reported in the local
papers in the future.
CHIPPING CAMPDEN
COUNTRY MARKET
Friday 9am – 11am • Lower Town Hall
The Country Market is a co-operative of food and craft
producers - providing goods to the town for over 40 years.
All our food is produced in home kitchens with locally
sourced products. All food producers have to have a food
hygiene certificate and comply with national legislation re
labelling and allergens. Our crafters also work at home.
We offer a wonderful array of savoury, sweet and baked
goods, alongside local seasonal fruit, veg, eggs, marmalade,
jams, chutneys and honey. As all the meals on offer are
freshly made the majority can be frozen and microwaved.
Our crafters offer a variety of goods, from cards for all
occasions, knitted children’s garments, to willow, wooden
and sewn items.
Are you a holiday cottage owner? Recently we had a visitor
from the USA who was renting a cottage for a month, she had
visited Chipping Campden previously and had purchased
from us then, so she was more than happy to to be able
to buy meals, cakes and other items from us again, this is
what she had to say: “thank you for being so kind to me my
friends and family. I sincerely appreciate all your help and
we loved having such a variety of foods, made things so
easy”. If you think that our home made ready meals etc.,
might be something your guests would be interested in
please get in touch for our order form and leaflets.
This month we are featuring meals from holiday destinations
August 4th - Thai, 11th - Greek, 18th - Spanish. For more
information see our Facebook page .
We are still looking to recruit more cooks and bakers, so
why not pop along and have a chat with Angela, Paul or
Katie to find out how they got involved.
If you are a local and have never visited us, please do come
and see what we have to offer. We also offer an ordering
service and if you are housebound we can deliver - call or
email for an order form.
OPEN GARDENS
What a magnificent weekend; the gardens looked
wonderful, the tea and cake were splendid, the rain
held off until two minutes to six on Sunday and we
had several hundred visitors. We are delighted to
report that this year Open Gardens raised a total
of £7,271, a wonderful result.
The money has been split equally between Campden
Edge, Campden Home Nursing and the equipment
fund for our Community First Responders. The
Community First Responders are trained by South
Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust,
but the Responders are volunteers and all their
equipment is funded through charitable donations.
We would like to say a huge thank you to all the
gardeners for opening their gardens for the weekend
and for all the hard work that goes into making them
look so beautiful. It was a joy to see them we really do
appreciate the effort that goes into this. The visitors
were very happy with the tour, and with the teas!
Thanks also to all the volunteers that helped out
with teas at the Town Hall; everybody who made
and donated cakes. We are grateful to the Campden
Society for agreeing to open Wolds End Orchard
and thanks to the Friends of WEO for organising the
opening and to all the Orchardeers who helped out on
the day.
And finally, thanks to Martyn Wilson for his energy
and enthusiasm as our guest gardener; he was very
impressed with the range of the gardens. Martyn is
a locally based garden designer who was this year
chosen to design the RSPCA garden at The Chelsea
Flower Show.
This weekend could not take place without wide
support, so thank you to all who take part in whatever
way – we think you will all agree it has returned as a
fantastic success.
Finally, please save the date for next year: Chipping
Campden Open Gardens will be held on the third
weekend of June – Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th
June 2024. Thank you!
QEST is a charity dedicated to supporting excellence in
British craftsmanship and since 1990 has awarded over £5.2
million to 700 makers, many of whom are leaders in their
master craftsmen and more.
We are delighted to present the work of eight talented makers
who have benefited from the charity’s support. The scholars
in this exhibition work in Gloucestershire and neighbouring
counties. All are highly skilled in their field and funding
from QEST has enabled them to expand their knowledge by
working with master craftsmen and exploring new techniques
which take their practice to the next level.
FARMYARD FRIENDS DELIGHT RESIDENTS AT LOCAL CARE HOME
DURING NEW BUSINESS LAUNCH
Residents at a care home
in Chipping Campden,
Gloucestershire, were joined
by some farmyard friends
during the launch of a new
local business.
Mill House Care Home were
delighted to host the launch
of The Good Day Farm On
Tour, a local company that
visits care homes and schools with farm animals, in a bid to
boost education and wellbeing.
In conjunction with the first day of Care Home Open
Week, an initiative that connects communities and delivers
a positive impact in the social care sector, the residents
and team at Mill House were joined by pigs, goats, ducks,
rabbits, chickens and
sheep.
Laura Niblett and Emily
Withers, owners of
the Good Day Farm
commented, “At the
Good Day Farm, we are
passionate about sharing
the joy of our animals with
others. Whether you’re 1
or 100 you should always
have the opportunity to
benefit from the therapy
they bring, we recognise
that many people can’t go
to farms, so we are here to
bring the farm to the community.
We absolutely loved the time at Mill House, seeing the
residents faces light up just
watching the animals made
it all worth it. The bonus of
having a pig and a goat walk
through the home able to visit
those who couldn’t leave their
rooms was really special, it
certainly made our day!”
Louise Voss Wellbeing
Lead at Mill house added,
“what is wonderful about
this business is that they
bring animals who can visit
residents who are to ill
to leave their rooms, so if someone
is having a bad day or feeling unwell what better way to
cheer them up than a pig popping in to say hello. We are
delighted that “Good Day
Farm” used us to host their
opening event, our residents
had a wonderful time. We
wanted to bring a whole new
experience to Mill House,
many of our residents
grew up as part of the local
farming community so this
event brought back some
cherished memories.”
Part of the Aria Care
Group, Mill House provides
residential care, nursing
care and dementia care. For more information, please visit
The History Society activities have continued into the
summer, not least because of the requests for information
about Campden people and places that come from around the
world. A recent query about the Hands family revealed that
they were the chemists in Campden for over 140 years and
led to more questions. What was an Italian Warehouseman
and Aerated Water Manufacturer doing in Campden …..
combined with being a chemist and druggist?
Henry Joseph Hands was the latest in a long line of the
family in Campden. His grandfather, Joseph, was a brazier
and tin worker who must have done very well for himself
to be able to buy the building and leave it to his son Joseph
in 1845 - his will says ‘the Stock and Stocks in Trade
Implements and Utensils which my said Son Joseph Hands
now uses for carrying on the Trade or business of a Chemist
and Druggist and Grocer shall be considered his property
after my decease’. The chemist at the time was Joseph Edge
and in the 1841 census Joseph Jnr is listed as an apprentice,
most probably to Edge, and then took over the business.
Before that Matthew Phipps owned a grocery business
there, so the building has been in commercial use since at
least the mid 1700s.
An ‘Italian warehouseman’, as advertised on the poster,
turned out to be a delicatessen, selling candied fruits, olive
oil, cheese and other exotic foods. Aerated water manufacture
was a little more difficult to understand: developed in the
early 1800s, local spring water was mixed with flavourings,
sugar and a mixed mineral powder that created the ‘fizz’.
The difficult, and sometimes dangerous, part was bottling
the mineral water securely into glass bottles with a glass
ball in the top. It is surprising that this was done behind the
shop: in the main, ‘manufactories’ were established with
the right equipment for mass production but H J Hands
seems to have done well with his local delivery. So much so
that he entered the Whitsun procession in 1903 with a cart
advertising his product. The meaning of the big round face
is uncertain – perhaps he represented the bubbles of fizz!
As well as a variety of goods on sale, H J Hands, followed
by his son Reginald, was also an agent for Lloyds Bank
until the bank was opened in 1923. He had a safe in the
back of the shop and local shopkeepers would bring in their
daily proceeds when they locked up in the evenings. There
seemed to be no worries about a bank heist
UPDATE
PLANNING & CONSERVATION MATTERS
The NDP Working Party, assisted by The Campden Society,
has made good progress and is moving quickly towards being
able to share a new draft publicly for comment. Prior to this
the Working Party is looking for some informal input from
Cotswold District Council to check that the approach being
taken is on the right track. More work is being done on some
aspects, including the proposed Local Green Spaces.
#MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Our Town Council needs you! They have 3 vacancies
to fill to bring them up to a full council of 11. If you are
interested, please contact the Deputy Town Clerk for a
short questionnaire to complete. The questionnaire can also
be found in the Documents section of their website www.
chippingcampden-tc.gov.uk under the ‘About the Council’
page. Deadline for applications : 25 August.
THE BEE COUNT UNTIL 30 SEPTEMBER
Why not participate in this simple survey and add local
information to the database? The Bee Count collects data on
the number of insects that visit a particular flower, ideally
chosen from a list of 14 target flowers. Flower Insect Timed
Counts can be done anywhere, for 10 minutes, including
gardens and parks, in warm, dry weather during daylight
hours until 30 September. For further details go to the UK
Pollinator Monitoring Scheme at ukpoms.org.uk
visiting the rapeseed fields locally, as well as the orchard and
local gardens,’ said Andy. ‘Honey colour and flavour varies
depending on the nectar collected, so it is interesting to taste
the differences throughout the year.’ Andy and Becky have
bottled a percentage of the honey off-take to sell, raising
funds for orchard maintenance.
HARVESTING &
VOLUNTEERS WANTED!
From September we will
recommence the autumn Orchard
Work Parties, every 2nd and 4th
Saturday mornings, 10-12 noon.
We hope to be harvesting fruit for
juice from mid/end September and
we have a list of autumn orchard
maintenance tasks to undertake.
New volunteers are always very
welcome to join in. Come along
and enjoy a morning making
new friends and learning about
what goes on. Bring a flask and a snack as we take a
break mid-morning to catch up on harvest plans and winter
activities.
DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: The next community event
at the orchard will be Apple Day on Saturday 21 October.
During September watch out for signs at the gate when
we are harvesting apples. If the gate is open, you are most
welcome to pop in and collect a bag to enjoy at home!
WOLDS END APPLE JUICE
area; to purchase, please contact
Geoffrey White on 0781 500 5879
or geoffreymwhite@gmail.com
WOLDS END ORCHARD
Whilst we had to cancel the Town Picnic on 16 July due to the
wet weather and high winds, we have been busy - including
harvesting honey. The presence of
honeybees and cross pollination is
a major factor to producing a good
crop, increasing yield, weight and
quality. We have seen solitary bees
in the orchard previously, and this
year we have added two hives
of honeybees which Andy and
Becky Parker have been looking
after. ‘The
large amount
of honey in the
hives at this
time of year
is likely due
to the bees
ART OPEN AFTERNOON
Our next Art Open Afternoon will be 2
- 4pm on Friday 18 August. Bring your
own art materials. There’s no expectation
to show anyone your work. If you register
your interest by contacting foweo2020@
gmail.com, or texting 07966734731, we
can let you know if the dates change due to
weather or other circumstance – but do feel
free to just roll up on the day too, even if
it’s just for a wander. As always, everyone
is welcome.
CHIPPING CAMPDEN
FIRST RESPONDERS
UPDATE
Chipping Campden First Responders have been up and
running now for almost twelve months. During this time,
the team have attended well over 100 incidents in Chipping
Campden, Mickleton, and surrounding villages - in most
cases arriving at the scene of serious injury and illness well
before an ambulance . We have been able to provide vital
first aid, and in one case deploy the Automated External
Defibrillator. Whilst waiting, we can update the Ambulance
Service and, on some occasions, upgrade the incident to
ensure an earlier response. Cardiac issues, strokes, and
injury following falls are attended on a weekly basis; the
team are building on their experiences and are able to
reassure patients whilst waiting for an ambulance. We are
now equipped with a Raizer Chair which was funded by the
Captain Tom Foundation. This enables Responders to raise
patients off the floor preventing more complex issues.
As a result of recent community fund raising, the team now
have enough money to buy our own complete Basic Life
Support kit together with communications equipment. In
addition, Chipping Campden Open Gardens Team kindly
donated £2,500 from their June openings. Fund raising with
the help of Chipping Campden Rotary Club is underway
with an event planned for January 2024. It is hoped that
by raising enough money for a second complete Basic Life
Support Kit, we will be able to build up the team and provide
even better cover for the town and surrounding area.
In addition to the three volunteer Community First
Responders, Alistair Wheatcroft, who is a full time
paramedic with South West Ambulance Trust, has now
become a ‘Staff Responder’ and will be able to attend
serious incidents when off duty.
A recruitment campaign has resulted in the training of a new
volunteer from Moreton in Marsh. This additional support
will be helpful in bringing a response to our area should our
own Responders not be available.
ST JAMES’ CHURCH REPAIR CAFE
Submitted to the team prior to the day, but finished ready
for it, was this pepper mill which looked as if it had been
dredged up from the bottom of the sea, with a completely
rusted and seized grinder and water stained casing. The
owner was about to throw it out reluctantly, as ruined.
However it had travelled the world with her and her late
husband, and had been the centrepiece of many a family
meal. We were able to take it apart, clean down and treat
the rust, and polish the casing, using only vegetable based
cleaners. It now grinds perfectly again.
There seems to have been a culinary theme to this session
– a saucepan lid and a kettle lid with broken handles were
left for our metals specialist to take home and weld.
Items tackled by the electricals team included a table lamp
with a broken holder, to be repaired and PAT tested. Lamps
have become one of our most popular items.
We do try and fix items on the spot if we can. Clocks
can be difficult, and we always recommend a specialist
for complicated movements. But sometimes it can be as
simple as a sticking hand, as it was with a modern battery
clock with a racing theme dial, which went away working
On the whole, as we are a smaller repair cafe and unable to
arrive with a lot of equipment, we often take things away
to bring back next time.
We are pleased to have a repairer who can deal with small
metal items and costume jewellery, such as this pair of
silver earrings, lacking an ear wire, which he has taken to
home to repair for return next time.
Another success, this time in conjunction with ‘men in
sheds and she shed’, which takes place very Tuesday and
Thursday morning at Jeccas House on the Aston Road
(new members welcome), was this Triang rocking horse,
which was a joint effort with our metallurgist who welded
a stirrup back on, one of our repairers who made the
originally missing handlebars, and the sheds volunteers
who repainted and repaired the rocker base. The owner
has donated it to the Campden Home Nursing charity shop.
Particular skills needed are:
Mechanical clock repairers (a very popular request)
Book binders
Electricians to aid with PAT testing and repairs – always in
high demand
Contact Michael Smedley 07798 533129
email smedley_michael@yahoo.co.uk
Pepper mill before
Earrings with missing ear wire
The next repair cafe at the Church Rooms, on the
corner of Church Street and Calf Lane, is on Saturday
AUGUST 12th , 10am to 12.30pm. Do come along, enjoy
a delicious selection of refreshments whilst you wait and
a chat with like minded people- whether you have an item
to repair or not.
WOULD-BE REPAIRERS - GET IN TOUCH we’d
always be pleased to add more skills
Perhaps it’s a hobby at the moment but could you put your
skills to community use?
The Bulletin’s
monthly columnist:
There are some sea dogs amongst us
The summer, kickstarted by our very own Cotswold Olympicks, so far, has
been exhausting, if you’re outdoorsy or a sports fan. June rolled gracefully
into July with the ongoing Ashes Test series, as our international men and
women’s cricket teams tried to wrestle the Ashes from the Aussies grip. July
accelerated with the Silverstone Grand Prix and the month ended with the
Game Fair at Ragley. With Wimbledon, Henley, the Open Golf and Glorious
Goodwood, the England v Australia over 60’s match, at the fabulous Campden
Cricket Club and much more in-between. All this had people worrying about
wardrobe mistakes like, wear a tie, don’t wear a tie, hats, the length of skirts,
a blazer or a suit, and what colours are in and so ‘terribly out’ this season? If
you attended any, or even all these events, it would have taken some effort.
I don’t wish to complain (I do, I really do) but there has been a distinct
shortage of freebies, I mean VIP press passes dropping on the doormat for
this columnist and so only the moths, rather than fellow spectators, have seen
my go-anywhere, anytime wardrobe.
August thankfully is more sedate and indeed famous, if you are a bit nautical,
for Cowes week in and around the Isle of Wight. Bobbing about on the water
when surrounded by the countryside is not something I give much thought
to, but I do notice the fundraising locally for the RNLI and realise there are
some sea dogs amongst us.
Speaking of sedate, I can’t be alone in my astonishment at the statistics in
the ANPR Report reproduced on page 10 of the last edition of The Bulletin.
Although the ‘speed volume’ report shows a move in the right direction, in
terms of speed reduction, the worst offender clocked 62 MPH. In a 30, heck!
To get anywhere close the trusty Landy would need to be going well, pointing
downhill towards Aston Subedge, without the usual ‘payload’ of dogs and
‘essential’ accoutrements like the tools, tow rope, straps, wellies and walking
sticks and heavens knows what else that ‘lurks’ there, weighing it down. I
may even need to shed a few pounds too. Speed limits are a maximum and
not a target, as a wise bloke once told me, and I only hope I never get a letter
or a visit from PC 49 to say I’ve been ‘clocked’ on my dash to the club.
This year’s Open Gardens, charity fund raising days throughout the parish,
I hear were as popular as ever. Great weather encouraged people to buy
sustenance from the Town Hall in Campden and the Village Hall in Broad
Campden, to help cool and recuperate as well as swell the coffers of the
chosen charities. The flavour of these days is very reminiscent of the era of
Father Brown, don’t you think? I fear however, it may be somewhat at odds
with my particular approach to re-wilding, as I like to regard it, and becomes
something to savour or a draw to the crowds, but never say, never, eh? I get,
there really is something quite nice about meandering around other people’s
gardens, in support of good causes, as well as providing a chance of casting
a critical eye over someone else’s pruning and weeding. So, next year, I may
just join the crowd!
September is a lovely month in England, made all the better with Moreton
Show providing an opportunity to celebrate country things. However, the
month this year is even more special, as we have the real bonus of the Rugby
World Cup getting underway. Although the venues for the matches are in
France, I am sure many fans will make the effort.
JB
TAKES A LOOK
AT LIFE

The end of my first six months as Director of Theatre
Operations at Cidermill feels like the perfect moment to
launch our Autumn Winter season, and with it, our first foray
into professional touring work. We have been lucky enough
to receive an exceptional outpouring of support from the
local community since opening our doors in September
2022, with people from near and far coming to see our
spaces and attend our performances. A huge thank you to all
who have championed the theatre, kindly supported us with
donations, and greeted us with such enthusiasm. We hope
that Cidermill becomes a place for fun and entertainment,
aswell as giving people a chance to come together and get
creative!
Moving into September we’ll be getting into the Strictly
Come Dancing mood with virtuoso displays of traditional
tango dance from the UK’s leading tango company, Tango
Siempre, who have appeared on BBC television’s Strictly
Come Dancing, The One Show, ITV’s “Surprise Surprise”
and Radio 3’s “In Tune”. The tango quartet play music
covering the full range of Argentine Tango from the Guardia
Vieja of 1900s Buenos Aires, via the art deco Golden Age
to the passionate and intense nuevo tango of Astor Piazzolla
and the contemporary scene.
October half term sees the opportunity to bring little ones to
the theatre to see Roald Dahl and the Imagination Seekers,
featuring Brenda Bogg, a member of the ancient guild of
TaleTenders, who discovers some missing words which
spark danger! The show is created especially for children
aged 5 and above, and develops creative and literacy skills
through performance, aswell as exploring Roald Dahl’s
extraordinary stories, including the BFG and The Twits
along the way.
At the end of November we are supremely excited to be
hosting The Ronnie Scott’s All Stars, as they take to the
stage to celebrate ‘The Ronnie Scott’s Story’. Life at
Ronnie’s is evocatively reimagined through tales of the
club’s past visitors, from pop stars, film stars and politicians
to comedians and royalty, but above all, the musicians…
I’m a firm believer that it’s never too early to be thinking
about Christmas, so we have two events ahead of our
pantomime which should get you in the festive spirit.
On the 12th December we’re screening a performance of
the Royal Opera House’s: The Nutcracker as part of our
new series of ballet and opera recorded performances, and
on 17th December we are showing the classic Christmas
film, It’s A Wonderful Life. We hope to see you there, mince
pie in hand!
Finally, we’re delighted to welcome back Tread the Boards
for Jack in the Beanstalk which will be running from 22nd
December to 7th January, and bringing with it all you would
expect from a joyful and fun family pantomime!
I look forward to welcoming you back to the Cidermill
Theatre very soon.
JUNE 2023 ANPR REPORT
ASTON ROAD, CHIPPING CAMPDEN
Town Council meeting on 11th July approved the signing of the
ANPR camera Service Level Agreement with Gloucestershire
Constabulary. This agreement permits the ANPR camera
administrator to report upto 10 speeding repeat offenders to
the police each week. The police will then review the data
submitted and decide if further action should be taken by
either writing to or visiting offenders to encourage behaviour
change. The ANPR camera records a photo of each vehicle,
its speed, registration number and time in both directions
along Aston Road.
Incidentally a frightened motorist recently reported an
unpleasant and intimidating experience to the PCSO, Stow
about a driver in the car immediately in front of her at the
temporary traffic lights near Paul’s Pike. She passed on details
of the colour and make of the car. This report was followed up
by the Stow PCSO reviewing ANPR records.
The Sandwich Generation – are you
feeling the squeeze?
Written by Rebecca Daly, Financial Paraplanner
Are you a part of, or soon to be a part of, the ever-growing
generation of people responsible for caring for their own
children as well as ageing parents? When we last wrote about
this topic, we had focused on the ‘Gen Xs’ who are between
their mid-40s and 60s and how this situation could be
impacting their retirement planning. A couple of short years
later, accelerated no doubt by the cost of living crisis, it’s an
issue that continues to spread further across age groups with
‘millennials’ between their late 20s and early 40s now joining
the ‘sandwich generation’ club in droves. As a result, this is
leading to some worrying statistics.
According to recent research*:
• 21% of UK workers consider themselves part of the
‘sandwich generation’
• An estimated 6 million people in the UK workforce (over 1
in 5 workers) have dual caring responsibilities
• Among the sandwich generation, more than 1 in 3 people
felt a toll on their mental health, while 29% found it a financial
strain
• 21% in the sandwich generation say their employer does
not offer support to balance work and home responsibilities
Clearly, the impact of these pressures can take a heavy toll
both financially and personally. Here are some ideas that may
help lessen some of the short and long-term struggles.
Drawing boundaries and taking care of yourself
We appreciate that this is easier said than done, but as the
saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty cup. It is imperative
that you enforce some boundaries so that you can prioritise
some time for yourself. For parents that need your support
during the day it can also be tempting to reduce your working
hours or leave your job altogether. But, as well as forgoing
income, you could lose valuable benefits like pension, life
insurance and health benefits offered by your employer. The
long-term cost can be high and could end up having a significant
impact on your own position in later life. As an alternative, you
could consider adult day care or delegate more to other family
members which leads me to…
Family help
Are there others in your family who can share some of the
support with you? These can be difficult conversations to have
but it can take a weight off your shoulders if other relatives can
commit to some time or some financial support. Your children
can also be a drain on your resources. If your older children
have debts or need to get their careers on track, paying for
them to have financial or career coaching can be a more
valuable investment than simply subsidising them. If they are
earning an income, it’s perfectly reasonable to ask them to
pay their way and contribute towards the household, as well
as doing their fair share of cooking, cleaning and laundry for
the whole household.
Getting a financial plan in place
At the moment, rising costs are a real issue. Make sure you’re
claiming all the relevant benefits – both for you and your
dependants. Those with personal and nursing care needs are
likely to qualify for Attendance Allowance. If they’re under 65,
they should qualify for a Personal Independence Payment. For
children under 16, make sure you’re claiming child benefit and
if you’re paying for childcare, you can get tax breaks to reduce
the cost - see www.gov.uk/tax-free-childcare for more.
For the longer term, you may want to investigate alternative
solutions such as an Immediate Care Plan. This provides
a regular income for life to pay for care, in exchange for an
upfront, normally non-returnable, investment. Equity Release
is another option but, as with all financial solutions, it is
important to assess whether or not it will be the right fit for
your personal circumstances.
If your parents need care, a review of their savings and
investments would be wise. Their need for income will increase
significantly so it is important that their investments are
structured to support this. If your circumstances are complex,
a Financial Planner will be able to help you here. We can help
you to assess what financial strategies will work so that you
are prepared for whatever might be coming down the road.
Planning for the future
Those who have experienced the pressures of being a part of
the sandwich generation are likely to not want to put their own
children in a similar position down the line. If you don’t want
to rely on your children for your future care, it’s important to
think about how this cost will be covered. At BFP, we work
with all of our clients to ensure that these types of scenarios
are planned for. So whatever life has in store for you, we’re
here to provide the peace of mind that comes with having a
bespoke and comprehensive financial plan in place.
TRAVEL WITH MERV
Have you ever considered a walking holiday? Walking
is one of the very best ways of experiencing the gorgeous
landscapes of Europe, and walking holidays are brilliant for
both body and soul – relaxing but also challenging in just
the right measure, they are great for your fitness levels and
getting your daily dose of Vitamin D, and for packing in lots
of opportunities to immerse yourself in local culture, feast on
seasonal, regional food and drink, and switch your brain off
from everyday concerns.
One of the best things about walking holidays don’t have set
itineraries: they can be fully flexible, giving you the freedom
to explore as much of the local area as you like and to go
at your own pace. You can find up to two included guided
walks per week in some resorts, inviting you to meet other
guests, discover hidden gems that you might not under you
own steam, and fully appreciate the scenery and trails thanks
to a local guide with their insider expertise and insights.
With its charming Alpine villages, lush meadows, and
fascinating historical sites to explore, Austria has long been
a firm favourite with walkers and hikers. It has more than
24,000km of marked hiking trails taking you to or past peaks,
valleys and lakes, making it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
Italy is another classic destination for those who love
discovering new places on foot, with landscapes ranging from
gorgeous stretches of coast to looming mountains, from olive
groves to villages lost in time, and with an ancient history
matched only by its world-revered cuisine.
From its snow-covered peaks to the villages that dot the
shores of its lakes, tiny Switzerland has one of the most
dramatic landscapes in Europe. All Ingham’s Swiss holidays
include Swiss Half Fare Card, giving you 50% savings on
travel around the country using the hugely efficient Swiss
transport system of boats, buses and trains.
France is the most-visited country in the world by a margin of
several million visitors, yet it somehow never feels crowded,
and it includes some of Europe’s most breathtaking scenery,
from majestic rivers to spectacular peaks. It’s also famous for
its lifestyle and overall joie de vivre – most of which shines
through in its amazing food and wine.
Lesser known to many but an epic place to explore, the
Central European destination of Slovenia with its location at
the foot of the glorious Julian Alps is heaven for walkers and
hikers, who can enjoy deep blue lakes, dense forests, green
valleys, orchards ablaze with brightly coloured foliage and
crystalline streams.
Beginner or seasoned walker, short breaks or longer walks,
there is a perfect itinerary for everyone. I can help plan your
trip with air or rail travel too!
If you need help with your plans please let me know.
EBRINGTON’S TRADITIONAL
VILLAGE FETE & FAMILY DOG SHOW
Undaunted by the uncertainty of the weather, Ebrington kept
calm and carried on with its traditional village fete and family
dog show on Saturday 8th July, with crowds arriving from
near and far to the sound of the brilliant Chipping Campden
School Concert Band followed by Jazz 59, and a display of
Morris dancing from the Flowers of Ilmington.
Stalls included traditional favourites with the Wheel of
Fortune, jam jar tombola, skittles, children’s fund zone with
bouncy castle and races, and adults competitions too - so
something for all the family.
In aid of Ebrington church and the village organisations who
run the stalls, sideshows and refreshments, the fete’s dog
show and classic vehicle display proved as popular as ever.
Our appreciation and thanks go to the many local businesses
and individuals for their supports, and to all those who came
along on the day.
MICKLETON WI
At our June meeting we welcomed Caro Day
from the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham.
She had come to talk to us about the history
of the Theatre since 1660. Its development was influenced by
the discovery of the waters and Cheltenham becoming a Spa
town. She had brought with her some items from the Theatre
Wardrobe. Members were encouraged to join in and some
enjoyed dressing in the costumes. We saw lots of pictures of
old Cheltenham. The theatre was not always successful and
moved around before finally settling in its current location. It
was a lively and entertaining evening enjoyed by everyone.
Also in June some members enjoyed a cream tea cruising on
the river Avon from Stratford upon Avon, on a lovely warm
afternoon. Our evening skittles match took place at the Royal
Oak, Prestbury. Sadly we lost by two points, but it was a good
to meet other WI members from another part of the county.
Our July meeting was our annual social and games evening
at the Mickleton Community Vineyard - a lovely place
particularly when the weather is good. This year however it
rained. We were not put off though and enjoyed the evening
with refreshments and games within the marquee. It was all
good fun. The game of Jenga held everyone’s attention.
11th September 2023 - Women in Space by Ken Kelly.
charge applies. We meet on the second Monday in the month
at 7.30pm.at King George’s Hall, Mickleton
MICKLETON
GARDENING CLUB
The preparations for our Summer Flower, Produce and
Handicraft show have been the focus this month, which will
take place on Saturday 26th August at King George’s Hall.
There are a wide range of categories to enter and programmes
are available from the website now www.mickletongc.org.uk
Even if you don’t enter any of the categories, you are all
welcome to come along and see what is on offer from 2pm.
Our July talk welcomed Alun & Jill Whitehead, who are the
former holders of the National Collection of Siberian Irises.
It was a delightful insight into the huge variety of Irises and
they brought along a few of their collection to purchase,
which went down very well.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 16th August where Jack
Willgoss will talk us through the late summer garden. Come
along to King George’s Hall, Mickleton at 7pm. Entrance is
free for members and guests can join us for £3 on the door.
Membership costs just £10 until January 2024 and gives
you free admission to all our talks, as well as discounts at
Batsford Arboretum and Garden Centre, Hidcote Plant,
GARDEN NOTES FOR AUGUST
Did you notice recently that the King was reported to have raised a quizzical
regal eyebrow at the decision of the Royal Horticultural Society that slugs should
no longer be regarded as pests?
I’ve no original suggestions for dealing with slugs, but a few years ago I heard
an expert talk about aphids, and it might be helpful to pass on some of what
heard, hoping my memory is in good order. What follows, I think, applies to all,
whether greenfly, whitefly, blackfly or puce with day-glow yellow stripes!
They feed by sucking sap: a few don’t matter, but a serious infestation can
weaken or even kill plants, and blackfly meant I had very few broad beans last
year. (Much better this year, thank you.) How do they suck? Apparently they
have on their sweet little faces a sort of double tube, one inside the other, which
they stick into the plant: they then blow down one tube and that forces sap up the
other. They have a row of holes in their sides and draw in the air through these.
(Isn’t nature wonderful?) Infections like potato blight spread when aphids go
between infected and clean plants without wiping their mouths.
The best control, we were told, is to spray with insecticidal soap, which blocks
these holes and stops the aphids feeding. You may prefer that to using poisons,
especially on food crops; and in any case there are ever fewer insecticides on
the market, and aphids are notorious for developing immunity to them. It has
long been said that soapy water kills aphids, and this would explain why; but
I understand that it is not an ‘approved use’ for domestic soap and is therefore
illegal! Search out proper insecticidal soap if you fear having your collar felt.
One other important thing: even for a few days after death a pregnant aphid can
still give birth to live young. So spray twice: once to get the parents and again
after three days or so to get the children.
Apart from maintenance - dead-heading and such like - I think one of the jobs
for August is to sit out in the sun (if any) and enjoy your garden, but meanwhile
look at it with a critical eye. Are there boring bits that could be improved with
one or two different plants, or more refurbishment? Don’t do it now, but make a
note or take photographs and swing into action in autumn.
Back in the spring I said that shrubs apparently killed by the winter can sprout
again from the base, even months later. I’ve got some which have and some
which have not (or not yet). It is
mostly older plants that have not:
are they are vulnerable to cold with
age? Should I have taken cuttings and
replaced them sooner?
Later this month all sorts of plants for
autumn planting will come available
in your local plant centre. Be there
quite frequently or risk missing the
best choice!
