Woodseats Festival

GROWING, baking and 

making show is 

returning to Woodseats for 

the first time since the 

pandemic with the theme of 

Reuse, Recycle. 

The Have a Go show will take 

place at St Chad's Church, in 

Linden Avenue, on Saturday, 

September 9th, to showcase 

the talents of the local 

community. 

And the event will also raise 

funds for the Woodseats 

Community Garden which has 

been created on land behind the 

church 

A spokesman for St Chad's said: 

"We have categories for 

everyone - whether you're an 

expert or have never taken part 

in a show before. We want you to 

come along and have a go! 

"We also want to highlight the 

important message of using 

our resources wisely and so 

have chosen to focus on 

recycling and reusing for this 

year's show." 

The show includes sections for 

fruit and vegetables, art, 

handicrafts, baking and 

preserves with full details in the 

event schedule.

There is a £1 change per entrant 

and funds from this plus the sale 

of produce will go to the 

community garden. 

The garden has been created on 

what was St Chad's Church Field 

between Camping Lane, Linden 

Avenue and Abbey Lane, and 

aims to provide a safe place for 

people to meet and escape to the 

stresses of daily life. It is also 

providing a more diverse place for 

wildlife.

VERY child, no matter 

what their background, 

deserves the best start in life 

and equal opportunity to 

achieve their full potential. 

This also means that every child 

should have access to the best 

education possible, growing their 

talents, and ensuring that they 

are ready and equipped to 

succeed in the future. 

I have been speaking to schools across the constituency and I 

know how hard our teachers and teaching assistants work to 

ensure that every child they teach has the best school 

education. However, they are being asked to do more and more 

with less resource. 

This month, Labour has set out our plan to bring state schools 

up to standard within the first term of Parliament. 

We want to ensure that Britain equips our young people with 

the skills to fulfil their true potential and we want to win the race 

for jobs and industry and to do this, we need our young people 

to succeed. 

A Labour government will ensure that 500,000 more children 

hit early learning targets by 2023. This will ensure that we 

boost child development and set them on the right path to 

succeed. 

We will do this by adding thousands more health visitors in the 

community, expanding mental health access for new parents 

and working with local authorities to boost capacity in our 

childcare system and to stop the growing number of nurseries 

being forced to shut their doors. 

We’ll invest in speech and language classes to help young 

people find their voice. The inability to speak fluently is one of 

the biggest barriers to opportunity, and this is one of the 

biggest challenges left behind after the pandemic. 

We’ll update the curriculum to get more children to study 

creative arts or sports until they’re 16, as well as weaving oracy 

through a new national curriculum. 

There also needs to be a change of attitude towards 

vocational education. We need to close the gap between 

learning and life and practical and vocational skills. 

Finally, and most crucially, we’ll hire 6,500 more teachers, to 

help with the workload in our schools and we’ll tackle the 

retention crisis head on by rewarding new teachers who commit 

to a career in the classroom, and we’ll reform Ofsted so that it 

works for parents and children once again. 

This is what our children deserve and what the country 

needs to ensure we can win back our future and move 

forward.

TEP this way to the first tee! Almost 40 golfers 

featured in the 2023 Lady Captain’s Charity Day at 

Beauchief Golf Club. 

Playing in fancy dress in groups of three, the theme was Strictly 

Come Dancing. Sally Wademan - Captain Sal as members call her 

- organised a great day with a halfway house with refreshments 

on the 11th hole. Competitors enjoyed a two-course meal 

afterwards, followed by the prize presentation. 

Beauchief Ladies are always up for fun and the photos show 

some of the outfits worn on the day. 

The total raised for the day was £460; £200 went to the 

Sheffield Children's Hospital charity and £260 to Molly’s Charity. 

Molly’s brother, Finn Midgley, was a junior at the club and has 

just finished university and works part time at the club. He is 

trying to raise as much money towards the charity as Molly was 

diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma in January. It is a very 

rare form of cancer and research and treatments are currently 

limited. Salivary Gland Cancer UK are hoping to change this. The 

family and friends have raised more than £30,000 to date. 

HREE intrepid local golfers completed four rounds 

of the Beauchief course on the longest day of the

year, Wednesday, 21st June. 

Starting out on the first tee at 4.30am and finishing at tea-time, 

sponsorship money was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support by 

Chris Lowe, Andrew Wademan and Joshua Gibson. 

Chris explained: “Four rounds of golf, 4.33am start, 20 miles 

walked, 40,603 steps, 13hrs 51mins, 5,587 calories burned, 72 

holes, 277 shots and we completed the Macmillan Longest Day 

Golf Challenge.” 

Chris and Andrew are new members of Beauchief Golf Club. 

They were hoping to raise £1,200. 

EAUCHIEF Golf Club hosted its Midsummer Madness 

B Am-Am which this year saw 32 teams play take part. 

Members and visitors joined together to raise money for 

Molly’s Charity. 

Teams of four played with two scores to count on each hole and 

extra challenges around the course were nearest the pins on par 

3s, nearest the line on the 17th and a “Beat the Pro” on the 14th. 

Several members now have bragging rights having done just that! 

A Secret Auction was held, which along with raffles, sales of 

home produce, donations and a Halfway House refreshment tent, 

managed to raise £5,666.87.

Woodseats Festival 2023 

Festival of fun 

for all the family

OODSEATS Festival was bursting at the seams this 

summer, offering everything from art to archery and 

history to the hottest musical sounds around! 

This year’s music-themed weekend-long event partnered up with 

Woodseats Live to showcase local musical talent across seven venues. 

In addition to the big parade along Chesterfield Road to a host of 

attractions at a packed-out Woodseats School playground, the annual 

S8 family festival also took in a wide range of venues and offered many 

events for the local community. 

Historian Martin Naylor gave an illustrated talk 

on old Sheffield, Holmhirst Art Group members 

displayed their work and local charities and other 

organisations were out in force to promote their 

campaigns. 

Deputy Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Coun Jayne 

Dunn, also attended and marched with the 

procession from Abbey Lane School. 

Angela Greenwood, the festival’s chair and last 

remaining original member, said: “What a brilliant 

weekend! Thank you to everyone who 

volunteered their time this year to plan and 

deliver a massive weekend of free events in the 

heart of our community. Thank you to all those 

who came out to support it and we hope you 

enjoyed all the live music and family activities. 

“And a special thank you to our local shops and 

businesses who continue to support us after all 

these years. We couldn’t have done the festival 

without everyone coming together and 

supporting it.”

Letters to lost loved ones 

A 

‘Letters to Heaven’ postbox for family and friends to 

write to loved ones who have died has been installed 

at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium. 

The white postbox, one of six located at cemeteries and 

crematoriums in the Sheffield, have been set up by a counsellor 

aiming to help people process their grief. 

Chloe Elizabeth Hill raised funds for the postboxes after the 

deaths of her mother and her closest friend. 

Sheffield City Council has agreed to have them in five locations 

on a six-month trial while a sixth box is located in the privately-run 

Grenoside Crematorium. 

Chloe said: “I’m so happy that they are finally in place and that 

they are available for people to use. I am now eager to spread 

the word to enable fellow counsellors and people grieving to be 

aware of the resource that is available.” 

When the postboxes are emptied, letters will be buried in the 

common graves within the City Road Cemetery grounds. 

Beaver project 

for Sheffield 

HEFFIELD 

City Council 

has been awarded 

£96,725 to look 

at the possibility 

of reintroducing 

beavers into 

Sheffield and 

surrounding 

areas. 

The successful bid to the Yorkshire Regional Flood & Coastal 

Committee will see the council work with neighbouring local 

authorities and agencies such as Natural England and The 

Environment Agency to gain a greater understanding of the 

benefits that beavers have on landscapes. 

The study will look at how them building dams can improve 

water quality and reduce flooding, and how beaver habitats 

positively impact on a multitude of wildlife. 

Wild Eurasian Beavers (Castor Fiber) are a native species but 

were hunted to extension around the 16th century. 

Since then, beavers have been successfully reintroduced and 

protected in many countries, including Scotland and England, 

and were granted European Protected Species status in 2022. 

Angus Hunter, biodiversity officer at the council, explained: 

“Beavers are a native mammal and a long-lost part of our British 

ecology. They are a keystone species, who continually create 

and maintain habitats vital to the survival and recovery of 

thousands of other species of UK wildlife, including many rare 

and priority animals and plants. 

“They help to reduce flooding by creating dams in upland 

streams, which increases groundwater aquifers, helping to store 

water and reduce flooding, which in turn protects our 

communities, by helping to better manage water resources in 

times of flood and low rain. 

“These wetlands also provide fire breaks during countryside 

wildfires and are vital water sources for wildlife in times of 

summer drought." 

Coun Richard Williams, chair of the communities, parks and 

leisure policy committee, added that further work is needed 

before decisions can be made about whether a reintroduction 

project could happen in Sheffield.

Woman of Steel’s 100th birthday 

L 

OCAL resident Mona Furness recently celebrated her 

100th birthday. 

Mona was raised at The Gables on Northern Common, Dronfield 

Woodhouse, and worked in Sheffield’ steelworks during World 

War II, proudly earning a Woman of Steel Award in 2016. 

After marrying husband Len in 1949, Mona moved to Cheshire, 

running a restaurant in Manchester which boasted well-known 

customers such as footballer George Best. 

Following retirement, the couple returned to Dronfield 

Woodhouse. 

Mona and Len loved dancing and were regulars at tea dances at 

Sheffield City Hall. In her later years, after Len sadly died in 2006, 

Mona socialised at The Welcome Club, St Andrew’s Coffee and 

Cake sessions and the Luncheon Club, at Cliffe Park. 

She is still often seen having lunch at Ferndale Garden Centre, at 

Coal Aston, where she is regularly congratulated on her elegant 

outfits and beautiful hats! 

Mona celebrated her birthday at a lunch with friends and a tea 

party with singing and dancing at the residential home in 

Woodseats where she now lives. One of the highlights was 

receiving a card from the King. 

Mona is pictured proudly displaying her 100th birthday 

greeting from King Charles III and Queen Camilla

Happy with the designs and with their order in, the Jenkinsons 

looked forward to the fitting 

work being done and all within 

a few weeks of the initial 

enquiry.

the Jenkinsons have bedsides

Greystones was packed once 

again recently thanks to AS Music 

School’s latest band gig featuring 

no fewer than five of their student 

bands. 

Band classes are part and parcel of a 

number of great opportunities available 

for students at this long-established 

and much-loved Sheffield 8 music 

school situated in the heart of 

Woodseats. 

Students get to learn what it’s like to 

play with other musicians as well as 

receiving one-to-one lessons on their 

instruments. 

They are led by gig-experienced tutors 

and there are always at least a couple 

of chances each year for them to gain 

performance experience at real, live 

Sheffield music venues. 

The newest band in the line-up, 

Shotguns & Tulips, made an impressive 

debut performance and were more 

than ably followed by The Laters, (an 

all-adult student band), The New B- 

Chiefs and Elastic Band.

Two keen devotees of the Younghearts Soul Club are nine-year-old Ella Colton, 

of Lowedges, and Maggie-May Smith (12) from Stoke-on-Trent 

Kids sold on Northern Soul 

Anyone who believed the Northern Soul 

music and dance movement had been struck 

a fatal blow with the closure of the legendary 

Wigan Casino venue way back in 1981 had 

better think again. The craze is alive and 

thriving right here in S8. Mike Firth reports 

N 

URSE and social worker Amy Hodkin is the 

person behind the unlikely revival of 

the 1960s and 70s Northern Soul dance 

culture at the LBJ Forum, Lowedges, 

where the Younghearts Soul Club 

meets on alternate Thursdays. 

Members range from ten to 17 

years of age and they are revelling 

in learning about a culture even 

their parents or teachers can’t 

recall. 

Word had spread quickly about 

Younghearts and teenagers 

have flocked on the club from as 

far afield as Stoke-on-Trent. It 

was also recently featured on the 

early evening BBC programme, 

The One Show. 

As well as listening to Northern 

Soul songs and learning some classic 

dance moves, Amy says young people 

get the chance to pick up DJing and 

crafting skills, including making logos and 

posters. She also hopes to set up a scooter rally,

offer breakdancing lessons, provide access to recording studios 

and music lessons, and raise money for new games equipment at 

the community centre. 

Said Amy: “In times where there is a cost-of-living crisis and 

ongoing austerity I want to ensure that young people, no matter 

what financial situation they are from, can have somewhere to 

go, with something to do and feel a sense of belonging with 

others. 

“The aim of the youth club is to provide a free, friendly, no 

pressure environment, where young people can 

spend time with each other.” 

After the Covid lockdowns, Amy noticed 

the difficulties young people had getting 

back out socialising. 

“I thought about what some of my 

passions were and how I could 

incorporate these into making a 

difference. I considered how 

would I provide opportunities for 

people to connect and reduce 

the anxiety around this. 

“When lockdown ended, me 

and my dad started going to 

Northern Soul events locally at 

the Roundabout Soul Club run by 

Darren Deeley, Alan Bagshaw and 

Kevin Bruce at the Transport Club 

at Meadowhead. 

“My dad has always liked Northern 

Soul music and I was brought up 

around it. He didn't get to go to all the 

big venues as he joined the RAF when he 

was 16 but this also meant a lot of his friends

were scattered around to, due to the military lifestyle. 

“What I noticed was that within the Northern Soul scene, this 

brought like-minded people together and there was a massive 

sense of camaraderie. I gained a ‘Soul family’ and so many 

people encouraged me with Djing and I started my own record 

collection. My dad and I made so many friends. 

“I found the history of Northern Soul artists so intriguing and 

how they overcame so many barriers, often never knowing how 

big their music was to working-class Brits, who were dancing to it 

all night, until many years later. 

“I went on a journey of learning about how it was in England in 

the 1960s and 70s, with no internet, no laptops, no mobile 

phones. A much simpler time where people had to connect in 

person and go to greater lengths to keep in 

touch. I thought about how I could create a 

modern day synthesis, so that differing 

generations could be connected and teach each 

other new things. Old school meets new school, 

with a common cause. 

“I started documenting my Northern Soul 

journey on TikTok, one of my videos became 

viral, and I gained £1,000 sponsorship from one 

of my followers to set up a Northern Soul Youth 

Club. 

“I asked fellow soulies about potential names 

and Dave Hill suggested 'Younghearts' The 

Younghearts released 'A Little Togetherness' on 

the Canterbury label. 

“I then began considering where the Youth 

Club would take place. I live close to the LBJ 

Community Forum and Zoe Colton, the centre 

manager, agreed to meet with me and we 

launched in March. 

“The club has been developed by a team of 

nine volunteers and we are a Grassroots 

Community Project. Fellow Northern Soul 

connoisseurs have bought raffle tickets, patches, 

stickers and attended all-dayers we have put on, paying £4 on the 

door. 

“We run fortnightly on a Thursday from 7-8:30pm, we provide 

free food, drinks and snacks and have paired up with Wraggy's 

fish and chip shop, White Willows cafe, Andos takeaway, 

Morrisons and Lowedges Fried Chicken who have donated food 

for our young people. Local businesses have donated raffle 

prizes and Pyramid Carpets also donated lino for us all to do 

Northern Soul Dancing on! 

“We're making history, through incorporating the past into the 

future and bringing Northern Soul to the next generation.”

Transport tribute to Dennis 

A 

CONVOY of buses formed a procession 

from Chesterfield Town Hall to 

Dronfield Cemetery for the funeral of 

Dennis Vickers. 

Dennis, a former employee of many local bus 

companies, was also the keenest of transport 

enthusiasts. 

Born at Heeley, he began his bus career in 

Sheffield and then worked for Hulleys, Silver 

Service, Syd's Coaches, Ladyline, Thompson 

Travel, Aston Express - then back to Hulleys. He 

was a member of many transport groups 

including Transpire and Sheffield Omnibus 

Enthusiasts Society. 

Although he occupied a number of managerial 

roles and was a qualified traffic manager, his 

biggest thrill was always driving buses around 

north Derbyshire and Sheffield. 

Away from buses, Dennis’s passions included 

music and he was a member of Intake Gilbert 

and Sullivan Society for many years before they 

disbanded. He also enjoyed listening to Queen 

and Meatloaf. 

Dennis, aged 76, was the son of Sheffield 

historian and author J. Edward Vickers MBE.

INDA Farran was amazed to see an old photograph 

featuring her late father on the cover of a recent copy of 

Active8. 

Linda, who lives in Dronfield, works at the St Luke’s charity shop at 

Chesterfield Road, Woodseats, and it was there that she noticed the 

March 2022 edition of Active8. 

The cover featured a black and white picture of the heyday of 

Graves Park boating lake where her father, Eric Fawdry, once worked. 

She immediately identified him standing on the left of the two parkkeepers. 

Said Linda: “I do remember that he used to work on the boats at the 

weekend and was a gardener in the week. 

“My mum said that he once fell in the lake but he couldn't swim! 

“He lived in S8 all his married life and would have been thrilled to 

know he was on the front cover of a magazine. 

“Thanks for the memory!”

The magic of 

our meadows 

We mark high summer with a special feature 

by our wildlife columnist, Prof Ian Rotherham, 

who celebrates our local meadowlands 

S 

reservations of dual carriageways. However, this is not 

abandonment but merely a different, and I would argue better, 

UMMER is the season for wildflower meadows and 

across our region this year is a boom time. 

In our local Graves Park, for example, with a project now 

supported by the Graves Trust, ancient meadowlands are being 

brought back to life as the intensive mowing of decades is 

released. 

The results are spectacular and a huge boost to our threatened 

species of insects such as butterflies, moths and bumblebees. 

We are actively recruiting volunteer eco-champions to help spot 

and record the wildflowers and the wildlife species. The vision we 

have though, extends out from Sheffield’s biggest parkland and 

into the much wider landscape of countryside beyond. Already, 

you can see roadsides across Sheffield and into North Derbyshire 

where grass cutting is being relaxed with nature bouncing back. 

Not only is this good for wildlife but the landscape looks prettier 

too. And if done properly, it saves money as well. 

Even more important perhaps, managing the land this way helps 

mop up carbon (a major greenhouse gas), and it helps ‘slow the 

flow’ of rainwater run-off in times of flood. 

New meadows are emerging on farmland across the region too 

as either sites are re-seeded to wildflowers or else reduced 

levels of fertiliser input and softening of management allow the 

plants to recover. 

The consequences are meadows abounding with rich displays 

of wild flora, butterflies, moths and bees. Hopefully, the region’s 

birdlife will also get a boost from these transformations too. 

Even better, and indeed a key part of our ‘Graves Park vision’, is 

that the ideas can be transferred beyond the managed parks and 

farmland into community spaces, school 

grounds and even back gardens too. 

I spotted a local garden where wildflowers of 

Buttercup with Lesser Stitchwort and Common Vetch 

way of managing our open spaces. 

Wildflower areas from a back yard to a suburban park, or a 

highway verge should look good as well as being ecologically 

rich and productive. 

Flowers appearing in these zones include carpets of meadow 

buttercups and ox-eye daisies, the gorgeous blue field scabious 

and meadow cranesbill, and blue devil’s-bit scabious in wet 

grasslands. There are also flowers in the pea family including 

common vetch, tufted vetch, and bird’s-foot trefoil, along with 

pignut as a marker of ancient meadows (and formerly a special 

treat for children who dug them up to eat the ‘nut’ formed by the 

roots). 

Other flowers appearing in profusion include lesser stitchwort 

with its delicate, tiny, white flowers like miniature stars, in damp 

areas, and the blue germander speedwell in dry meadows along 

with common harebell. Carrion crows, magpies, and especially 

jays also plant acorns to produce a new generation of oak trees 

when grasslands or farmers’ fields are taken out of production. 

These form the new natural woodlands to help drive forwards a 

new ‘wilder’ countryside.

ANY people from the Active8 area attended a 

celebration of the launch of the Adapting to Climate 

Change Graves Park project. 

Organised by South Yorkshire Biodiversity Research Group, the 

Graves Trust, the Friends of Graves Park and Sheffield City 

Council, the event started out with a talk by Prof Ian Rotherham at 

Lees Hall Golf Club, followed by a walk around part of the park. 

The project aims to engage local people in adapting local 

greenspaces to the challenges of changing climate and 

biodiversity extinction. Those attending were shown the work 

already in hand and told of programmes and plans for the next 

two years. Projects include: 

• Work to begin monitoring the changing environment of 

NURSERY 

Spruce up your garden this summer 

Graves Park. 

• Monitoring of streamflow and soil erosion in the Graves Park 

Beck through Cobnar Ravine, to include monitoring of major soil 

erosion from the steep slopes of the ancient woodland. 

• Auditing ecological recovery in long-grass meadow areas which 

have been managed since the 1990s 

• Monitoring of water condition of the three ponds - for indicator 

species - especially damselflies and dragonflies and feeding bats 

• Monitoring of birds, bats, butterflies, bumblebees and other 

invertebrates in the Friends’ wildlife garden and across the wider 

landscape.

Mike’s rooftop date to aid hospice

OU could say that Mike Lancaster is 

hitting the heights after volunteering 

for St Luke’s Hospice. 

For when he’s not giving time to the St Luke’s 

Woodseats shop, he is preparing to take the 

plunge and join the charity’s September abseil! 

Semi-retired wedding celebrant Mike, who is 

57 and lives in Gleadless, decided to support St 

Luke’s as a tribute to mum-in-law Eunice Fisher, 

who was a patient at the hospice. 

“I felt I could be doing something useful and I 

thought of St Luke’s because it is a local charity 

and also because my wife’s mum was looked 

after by St Luke’s more than 20 years ago,” 

Mike explained. 

“I have always remembered how brilliant they 

were, they were just incredible and I have always 

had enormous admiration for them since then.” 

Mike volunteers at the St Luke’s shop at 

Chesterfield Road every Tuesday morning, 

currently supporting on the till but also looking 

forward to moving on to dealing with donations. 

“I have no retail experience so it’s very much a 

new thing for me and I am really enjoying it and I 

enjoy talking to the customers,” Mike said. 

Now, though, Mike is taking his support a step 

further, signing up to take part in the St Luke’s abseil, which will 

be held at Sheffield Hallam University’s Owen Building on 

Saturday, September 30th. 

Participants in the event pay a registration fee of £23 and are 

then asked to raise £230 in sponsorship. 

They will receive a St Luke’s T-shirt to wear on the day and 

unlimited help and support from the St Luke’s fundraising team. 

“Many years ago, maybe 30 or so, I abseiled off a climbing wall 

and it was utterly terrifying – so I thought I should have another

Lowedges Churches Walk. 

South Sheffield Evangelical Church and the Michael Church, in 

Lowedges, together with St Peter’s, Greenhill and Greenhill 

Methodist Church, have each provided or refurbished a bench in 

their grounds for people to sit, rest and enjoy nature. 

The route takes walkers between the four churches, which are 

roughly half-a-mile apart, so is just over two miles in total. 

Chris Wilcox, from the Greenhill Methodist Church community, 

said: “It was great to meet people from the other churches and 

to share experiences. 

“We are so pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to 

this walk; it’s a great idea for local people to have a walk with 

places to rest outside or inside for a drink and a warm 

welcome.” 

The walk was devised by the Greener Greenhill group to 

complement the longer Circular Walk they published last year. 

The network’s Geoff Cox explained: “Not everyone can 

contemplate a long walk so we wanted to find a way that more 

people could enjoy being outside while getting some gentle 

exercise at the same time. 

“We were delighted at how willingly the local the churches 

took up this initiative because they are so central to our 

communities.” 

Sponsored by Sheffield Council’s ‘People Keeping Well’, the 

walk leaflet also details when the churches are open for ‘loo and 

a brew’ opportunities.

September, Art in the Gardens is one of the largest 

outdoor art markets in the north, with artists, craft-makers and

while enjoying the beautiful leafy grounds of the surrounding

The event features premier artists in the pavilions and

promoting better health and wellbeing. 

During the weekend Chesterfield

crafts workshops, stalls, ‘have a go’

skills and a climbing wall will return 

but there’ll also be some new 

entertainment for 2023 including

drummers and the Babbling Vagabonds Magical Market Stall. 

Visitors will also be able to try their hand at Lego printing, and 

greenwood crafts or get green-fingered in a seed workshop.

The festival is a free event that takes place around the Tapton 

HAPTERHOUSE Theatre Company perform 

Sense and Sensibility at Sheffield Cathedral on 

Saturday, 19th August, at 7.30pm. 

Adapted for the stage by Laura Turner, Sense and 

Sensibility is a classic from master of satire Jane Austen. 

The story follows two sisters of the recently destitute 

Dashwood family; Elinor, possessed of good common 

sense, and Marianne, characterised by her emotional 

sensibilities. Marianne must overcome adversity as her 

pursuit of the dashing John Willoughby is complicated by 

the interests of Col Brandon. Meanwhile, Elinor finds 

herself in a romantic entanglement with clergyman 

Edward Ferrars. 

Austen’s trademark razor wit, aided by Turner’s deft 

adaptation, is on full display in this fresh take on the 

quintessential Regency romance. 

Established in 1999, Chapterhouse Theatre Company 

has been touring for over 20 years, specialising in open 

air Shakespeare, Classical literature, and family shows.

PLINTERS Theatre Group were left desperately 

searching for a new home when they realised they 

would be unable to perform at their usual venue as The 

Montgomery Theatre is closing temporarily for a major 

refurbishment. 

Desperate to continue to show off their incredible talent and 

bring top class theatre to their loyal audiences they started 

looking for an alternative venue. They explored many different 

options and were absolutely over the moon when The 

University Drama Studio found a spot for them. 

Splinters Theatre Group have been performing to Sheffield 

Audiences since 1989, with shows such as Godspell, West 

Side Story, Grease, Cabaret and Jesus Christ Superstar. 

This year they are bringing Our House - The Madness 

Musical back to Sheffield at the University Drama Studio, from

Barnum is the story of 19th century circus superstar and 

showbiz pioneer Phineas Taylor Barnum, the man who took the 

hard sell and turned it into a spectacular display of showmanship 

that took audiences by storm. 

It fills the stage with jugglers, acrobats, dancers and clowns and 

the story of Barnum’s rise to power and fame is filled with real 

life characters like circus impresario and business partner James 

A Bailey, Swedish opera legend Jenny Lind and circus sideshow 

attraction General Tom Thumb. 

“We knew when we decided to bring Barnum back to the 

Lyceum that we would be presenting our cast with some real 

challenges but up to now everybody seems to be really 

enjoying picking up some new skills,” said the show’s director, 

Jill Beckett. 

“Matthew Walker, who plays Barnum, really has some big circus 

routines to learn and the rest of the cast too are being presented 

with some new tricks - starting with juggling and progressing to 

some real theatre magic that we won’t share yet because we 

want our audience to have a proper surprise when the curtain 

rises on an evening of great entertainment. 

“It’s going to be a wonderful blend of theatre and circus 

spectacle, combined to create an unforgettable stage 

experience.”

NE of the biggest and most colourful village events in Derbyshire, Barlow 

Carnival returns this August, promising a week packed full of fun and 

entertainment for all the family! 

Taking place from Wednesday 16th until Sunday 20th August, the village will come 

alive once more with this annual celebration. 

The festivities get underway on the Wednesday evening with the Blessing of the 

Wells where the ancient art of well dressing is displayed at three locations in the 

village along with Maypole Dancing by local children, a Flower Festival in St 

Lawrence Church and the Fun Fair will be open. 

Thursday sees the return of the popular Bingo and Quiz Night in the Carnival 

Marquee and on Friday organisers present an Open Air Cinema, screening Dirty 

Dancing. Tickets are selling quick so don’t miss out! 

The highlight of the week is Carnival Day (Saturday, 19th August) with a parade 

through the village, which leaves Springfield Road at the earlier time of 1pm this year. 

Featuring floats, bands, carnival queens and fancy dress, it promises to be fantastic

The fun and games continue on the Recreation Ground afterwards with a host of 

activities, food and drink, entertainment, live music, stalls, a classic car display and 

much more. 

The day finishes off in style with Rock the Carnival, featuring live music from Atomic, 

the ultimate tribute to the 1980s, supported by The Natterjacks. This promises to be a

The Sunday sees the return of the popular Dog Show and this year an Old Skool 

Sports Day will raise money for Ashgate Hospice. There will also be lots of stalls and
