Class of 2012 Makes its Mark on 4th & Breck
On May
11, 2012
the seniors
participated
in the traditional
Honors Day
activities. Aftercompleting
first period exams, the Class
of 2012 was welcomed into the
Alumnae Association during a
special brunch hosted by the Association.
Girls received their
alumnae pins from Pres alums. In
addition, the 2012 Giving Circle
Grants were awarded to Sr. Edna
Fabre, SCN, for the cafeteria, and
to Terry Vowels Roberts ’82, for
the school library.Following
the brunch,
seniors entered
the Tower for
the first time,
where they
signed their
names alongside
those of other alumnae. After
the signing, seniors walked out of
the historic front entry way, symbolically
finishing their journey at
Pres. Underclassmen, family and
friends cheered as the Class of
2012 made their way to Greater
Bethel Church for the Honors
Day ceremony. Among
the many students who
were recognized, Laura
Krauser, who received
Third Honors, was
named Miss Presentation.
“It was sort of
surreal actually,” Laura
said of receiving both
awards. “I [now have] concrete
mementos that sum up my dedication
and hard work over the past
four years. I love my school and all
my classmates, so being
honored in both was extremely
moving.”
The 2012 Baccalaureate
Mass took place
inside the Cathedral
of the Assumption
on May 16th. After
processing in wearing
full graduation attire, seniors
took their seats for the last Mass
they would share together as classmates.
Rachel Marcum read the
first reading in English, while
Neema Tambo translated in
Arabic, her native language. Fr.
Peter Quan Do spoke directly to
the seniors during his homily,
reminding the class that they are
always welcome in the Church
and reflecting on the wisdom it
takes to turn to God in times of
struggle. After the congregation
celebrated the Eucharist, legacy
gifts were given to the Hettel and
Tambo families, who had their
third and youngest daughters
(Katy and Neema) graduate from
Pres. Following tradition, the senior
members of Tower Chorus
performed a meditation song, “I
am a Small Part of the World” for
parents, family and friends. Tess
McGrew, the 2012 Salutatorian,
gave a short
reflection. “We took
our first steps as Pres
students together and
together we will take our
last,” she said. “Just like
we signed our names in
the Tower, Presentation Academy
has signed her name in each of
our hearts.”
The 2012 Commencement
Exercises were held on
Saturday, May 19th. The
ceremony began with
a procession of graduation
candidates down the
middle aisle, each candidate
carrying a single red
rose. After the candidates
gathered on stage, Ms.
Wine and Sister Chris introduced
the graduating class to parents,
family and friends. Senior class
president Nakayla Little led everyone
in prayer. Angela Mason,
2008 C.E.F.
award winner
and founder of
ITS Services,
addressed the
candidates, explaining
how
to take advantage
of every
opportunity presented
along the way.
The Class of 2012 received more
than $3 million in college scholarships,
and 97 percent of the class
will continue with
post-secondary
education. Class
Valedictorian
Kim Hollkamp
gave her reflection
on how the
members of the
Class of 2012
are not just Pres graduates,
but sisters forever, and that
Presentation Academy was a huge
and meaningful part of her life.
Where are they Now?: Sister Mary Rhodes Buckler
Sr. Mary Rhodes Buckler retired
from Presentation in 1989 after 17
years teaching English and Latin. She
continued her volunteering involvement
at a arts activities – Actor’s Theatre
of Louisville and the Kentucky
Center for the Arts and many others.
She was very active in her Lorentine
community traveling for a variety of
conferences, both general and with a
focus on earth and feminist theology.
Shortly after her move to the Motherhouse
in 2006 she suffered a serious
fall, and after hospitalization and
physical therapy she has not recovered
all of her former physical mobility. At
almost 94 years of age, she now lives
in the Motherhouse infirmary and
is her friendly and cheerful self even
though she has some loss of memory.
I, however, have lost none of my
memories of our wonderful experiences
together – traveling through
Europe with her and enjoying her
company in Louisville. She has been
blessed with wonderful intelligence,
wit, humor and charm. I am blessed
to know her.
