LEGEND
HEAVENLY HORSES
OF FERGANA
WWW.UZBEKISTAN.TRAVEL
6
There is a legend saying
that in ancient times, people of
the Fergana Valley (in ancient
times – Davan) bred the horses
of unearthly beauty, elegance,
power and grandeur. Horses were
also known outside the state.
Due to their extreme endurance,
the Chinese called them heavenly
horses. They even initiated
wars to conquer the horses of
Ferghana, but their attempts were
unsuccessful.
After the first defeat in 104
BC, the Chinese emperor Wu-di
again decides to take possession
of Davan territory, and this time
the Fergana people, having been
defeated, got obliged to supply
China with 300 horses per year
for its army.
Pearl of Shakhrisabz –
SIGHTS
Ak-sarai palace
The main sight attraction of Shakhrisabz city, as well as a grandiose architectural
monument of Amir Temur era, is the Ak-Saray Palace.
There is a belief that the great commander dreamed of building a huge palace on the
territory of his homeland – Kesh city, today’s Shakhrisabz. According to historical data, the
construction of the palace started in 1380 and was completed in 1404. The majestic palace
was built in memory of Takinakhotun – mother of Amir Temur. Unfortunately, only part of the
monument has survived to our time.
The palace was considered the largest on the ancient lands of Central Asia, it consisted
of several buildings – rooms for receiving eminent guests, courtyards, beautiful gardens with
pools.
Prominent artisans from Khorezm, Iran and other countries took part in the construction
of the palace. For example, the name of the stone-cutting master Muhammad Yusuf Tabrizi
is repeated twice in the decoration of the vaulted arch. A unique masterpiece of architecture,
built in 20 years and even being today in a dilapidated state, still amazes guests of the city
with its majesty and grandeur.
The color scheme of the walls of Ak-Saray combines historical, philosophical and religious
themes; the interpretation of Kufic inscriptions, decorative ornaments, Islamic patterns in the
girih style gave the building a sublime and magical meaning.
On the pedestal, decorated with natural patterns in seven different colors, there are
inscriptions saying “Emir is the shadow of Allah on earth”. On the foreside of the front dome
in the form of an elongated hexagon, the inscription in Arabic saying “Justice is the basis of
the state and the motto of the rulers” is repeated six times.
In the stretching front wing of the Ak-Saray, in the Arabic Kufiy style, such wise sayings
are written: «If you doubt our greatness, look at the castles we have built», and also «Reason
rests on its actions, and ignorance on its dreams and hopes».
Ak-Saray Palace received its legendary name due to the fact that the colors on the
facade and domes of the palace change in the moonlight.
Even the Spanish envoy Gonzalez de Clavijo in 1404, passing through Shakhrisabz
to Samarkand to reception by Amir Temur, expressed his admiration for such a great
architectural miracle.
In 1973-1975, archaeological research was carried out in Ak-Saray, and in 1994-
1996, conservation work was carried out. It is worth noting that the palace is included
in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2002, under the auspices of the organization, in
connection with the celebration of the 2700th anniversary of Shakhrisabz, the palace was
partially reconstructed.
Museum of Igor Savitsky
«Louvre in the desert»
Nukus, T. Kayypbergenov street, 52
WWW.UZBEKISTAN.TRAVEL
Do you want to visit the true Central Asian
Louvre? Then you should definitely visit the
legendary Savitsky Museum of Art in Nukus.
The collection of the museum fund has about
100 thousand unique exhibits – and this is a real
treasury of the fine arts of Uzbekistan, valuable
relics and, of course, paintings of Turkestan and
Russian modernism of the 20-30s of the last
century.
The founder of the museum, Igor Savitsky,
arrived to Karakalpakstan in 1950 and from the
first days fell madly in love with this unexplored
land. He expressed his love for the nature of
Karakalpakstan, its history, culture and people in
the collection he compiled for the state museum.
The museum was opened in 1966, and since
then it has become one of the largest and most
significant in the world.
Throughout his life, Igor Savitsky has been
studying avant-garde art and replenishing the
museum fund, among which are paintings not
only by famous artists, but also by little-known
ones. He literally saved some works from
destruction, keeping them in the museum of a
distant city in the desert.
Why is the museum called the second Louvre?
Because its collection is the best art collection
in the Asian region and has the second largest
collection of works of the Russian avant-garde,
and in 2001 the English newspaper The Guardian
called it «one of the most beautiful museums in
the world.»
One of the most outstanding paintings of the
world heritage, Bull, by the artist Vasily Lysenko
has become the symbol of the museum. Art
experts interpret the painting in different ways,
but almost everyone share the feeling of the
frightening deep black eyes of a bull that look
ominous and bottomless. At that time, the eyes
symbolized the onset of fascism and the coming
war.
The artist himself is a mysterious character
whose Only six of his works remain in the world
heritage, they are stored in the Savitsky Museum.
In addition, the museum has a large collection of
the artist Alexander Volkov, who was a prominent
22
epresentative of the Turkestan avant-garde. He
lived and worked in Uzbekistan; more than 500
of his paintings are collected in the Savitsky
Museum. His works are bright and original,
they demonstrate the rich culture and nature of
Uzbekistan, convey the scenes of everyday life
and the incredible energy of the Uzbek people.
Also in the museum you can see the
magnificent paintings of Ural Tansykbaev and
Nikolai Karakhan. Each work of the mentioned
artists has its own magic, which captivates from
the first seconds. Looking at the works of one
master, it is hard to believe that they were painted
by one person, the paintings are so striking with
their unique plot and style.
Savitsky was also fond of the work of postavant-garde
artists. Some artists could not even
imagine that their work might be of interest to
anyone, not to mention the fact that they would
be exhibited somewhere. In this sense, Savitsky
can be called a real ascetic, and his activities
can be compared with the activities of famous
collectors: Tretyakov, Shchukin, Morozov and
others.
CRAFT
Traditional crafts
of Uzbekistan:
Uzbek national dolls
Uzbekistan is a great country that has been a crossroads of different eras and
cultures since ancient times. Our country is rich not only in its historical sights,
architecture, famous scientists, picturesque nature and culture. Real treasures of
the world are stored in Uzbekistan, which are passed down from generation to
generation. Here, artisans work day and night to create real works of art, and folk
arts and crafts are recognized as a masterpiece of the Uzbek people.
In Uzbekistan, there is an ancient tradition of creating national dolls, which are
a symbol of folk culture and national heritage. These dolls are made from various
materials – from fabric and wool to clay and wood.
The emergence of puppetry in Uzbekistan dates back to the Timurid era, when
a large number of maskaraboz-puppeteers appeared – they entertained the local
residents of Maverannahr in open squares and markets.
Today, there are various schools for making dolls in the country, one of them is
located in Bukhara, as well as a museum and a workshop. Having visited these
places, one can listen to the history of the origin of this art in Central Asia and its
role in people’s lives. And in just a few minutes here you can even learn how to
manipulate these puppets and become a real puppeteer. Going upstairs, to the
workshop, you can study the process of making Bukhara dolls.
This skill is passed down from generation to generation. Clothes for dolls in
Uzbekistan are mainly sewn from national fabrics. Such bright painted dolls have
long become a traditional Uzbek souvenir that you can buy when traveling in any of
the cities of Uzbekistan.
CRAFT
Uzbek Suzani
– the skill of needlewomen
through the centuries
WWW.UZBEKISTAN.TRAVEL
Suzani is part of the culture and art of
Uzbekistan. Suzani is a wall carpet with unusual
patterns that have been in every home since
ancient times. It was even given as a bride’s
dowry, as an indispensable element of the house.
At some homes, girls from an early age began
to embroider a carpet and finished it by the time
of their wedding, as suzani was considered a
symbol of a long and happy marriage. Bukhara,
Samarkand, Shakhrisabz, Fergana and Tashkent
are considered to be the centers of embroidery.
The embroidery in each city is different from each
other.
When a western guest is visiting a traditional
Uzbek house, the first thing that surprises the
guest is the magical interior, as if from an oriental
fairy tale. A patterned carpet spread on the floor,
incredibly beautiful embroidered panels on the
walls, kurpacha blankets folded on niches, oriental
pillows with tassels, a forged chest, curtains,
tablecloths – everything is an integral part of the
interior decoration. Most of all, the embroidered
panels that complete the home composition are
attractive.
As a rule, elegant embroidery of home
decoration is made by the hostess herself. Such
embroidery is the incredible effort and a true work
of art that has been passed down through the
centuries from mother to daughter. A lot of things
the woman hands can do. The dowry of an Uzbek
beauty must include suzani.
The word suzani from Persian means
embroidered with a needle, which means that
suzani is made exclusively by hand.
In ancient times, every Uzbek bride knew how
to embroider suzani of incredible beauty: wall
carpets, clothes, bed linen, bedspreads, interior
items. Sometimes the groom, before marrying the
bride, first evaluated her embroidery. The more
skillfully the patterns and ornaments were made,
the more talented and patient the craftswoman
was.
Indeed, suzani requires great skill and patience.
The Uzbek suzani turned out to be so skillful
that the fame of such embroidery spread to many
countries. Merchants in the eastern bazaars
literally hunted for suzani. This happens to this
day – the Uzbek suzani is rightfully considered a
cultural treasure and heritage of the Uzbek people.
The pattern of the suzani of each region has
its own distinctive features, by which it is possible
to accurately determine from which corner of
Uzbekistan this miracle is.
CRAFT
Nurata suzani
Great craftswomen from Nurata city create the most beautiful bright clothes, bedspreads,
pillowcases, dressing gowns. A distinctive feature of Nurata embroidery is colored ornaments on a
white background. Each ornament is a symbol that has its own meaning.
For example, the sun is a symbol of peace and prosperity, a lace flower is beauty and love,
pepper symbolizes protection from the evil eye. And a characteristic feature of the Nurata suzani
are rhomboid leaves. Thus, Nurata embroidery becomes an artistic illustration, conveying the
motifs of the surrounding world.
Bukhara suzani
Bukhara embroidery is famous for its floral motifs and vibrant colors.
Most of the products are made with a chain stitch, which is the best suited for depicting flowers
in thin lines. Floral patterns are evenly distributed on the surface of the product. Graceful twigs,
round ornaments, delicate petals and stems are made in an impeccable combination of several
colors.
44
Samarkand suzani
Talented needlewomen of Samarkand create their own unique suzani style. Usually this is a
larger pattern, in the center of which there is a round rosette of pink shades, and a foliate ring
frames this rosette. In the Samarkand region, in the ancient Urgut city, craftswomen create truly
handmade masterpieces. They use a special technique called bosma. This technique allows to
create truly magical floral patterns on white cotton fabric and depict some household items. Urgut
suzani is voluminous and dense, ornaments and patterns cover the entire surface of the product,
leaving only a few gaps in the white background.
CRAFT
Surkhandarya suzani
Products of Surkhandarya masters skillfully demonstrate all the diversity, culture and originality
of this region. Each ornament conveys its sacred meaning, mainly images of the plant world in
bright colors with all sorts of floral variations. People in Surkhandarya are very fond of decorating
the room with wall-mounted fabric partitions, on which colorful suzani embroidery flaunts. And
suzani is also used on bedspreads, various bags used for storage and other household and interior
items.
CRAFT
Shakhrisabz suzani
Embroidery from the ancient Shakhrisabz city resembles that of Samarkand. Here you can also
see an elaborately embroidered large rosette, complemented by multi-colored details and framed
by blue leafy garlands. Against a colored background, the Shahrisabz suzane resembles more a
carpet than a panel – the pattern that creates the scheme is so skillfully and clearly built.
Tashkent suzani
Capital’s needlewomen also create items of amazing beauty. Since ancient times, two types
of embroidery have been used in Tashkent – palyak and gulkurpa. Palyak is a kind of circles that
fill the fabric of a dark red color. Gulkurpa creates a composition with a bright star in the center
or a circle with flower stalks, thus leaving a large area of fabric free. This type of embroidery was
used on bedspreads for the family bed, especially for newlyweds. The central pattern symbolizes
a happy family life, and the flower stems symbolize future offspring.
Fergana suzani
Embroidery from the cities of the Ferghana Valley is famous for the lightness and flowing airiness
of ornaments. Patterns are placed freely and are made on silk or satin in dark tones. Often on a
dark green, blue or purple background. As a rule, this is ruijo embroidery – a type of embroidery,
the pattern of which has a certain shape, outlined with a ribbon
stripes on three sides.
CHOGIRMA – NATIONAL HEADDRESS
FOR MEN
«Although there are no boots in the legs, there must be
a chogirma».
Khiva elders
From ancient times, in Khorezm, a headdress was considered a symbol of greatness, wealth
and courage.
The headdress could not be changed or given to others, and fathers passed it on only to their
sons.
Chogirma was worn to protect against sudden changes in climate, in winter it warmed in the
cold, and in summer it kept the head cool. Since there were often storms in Khorezm, it was
believed that chogirma also protects against diseases.
In Khorezm at the beginning of the 20th century, it was considered dishonorable to walk without
a headdress.
They say that if the father did not properly raise the child, then the elder of the mahalla could
deprive the father of the chogirma.
There are three types of chogirma: Tugalak chogirma, Sherazi, Silkma chogirma.
Tugalak chogirma has been worn in Khorezm since the 19th century. At first, only the rulers wore
this headdress, and then other groups of population.
Sherazi сhogirma is made of short wool. Embroidered from the wool of a newborn lamb.
Silkma chogirma was worn exclusively by the poor and the Turkmens who lived in Khiva. It is
embroidered from the long wool of a sheep, it is voluminous and in a rounded shape.
50
It is known that the ruler of the Khiva Khanate Allakulikhan (1825-1842) was the first to wear the
chogirma headdress.
Until the end of the 20th century, the elders still wore chogirma, but then people stopped wearing
them. They were used only by members of theatrical and folklore ensembles.
To this day, the chogirma headdress exists, but tourists or visitors can only try it on to take a
beautiful photo, like a memory from Khorezm. Thanks to the interest of tourists, this craft continues
to exist, which is a national treasure and a symbol of the culture and traditions of Khorezm.
Today, men usually wear chogirma at festive events, as well as when performing the national
Khorezm Lyazgi dance
«Fatikha-Tuy»
– ANCIENT ENGAGEMENT CUSTOM
In the old days, parents chose the bride for their son themselves.
Often, the newlyweds could properly get to know each other only
on the day of the wedding. But before getting married, the bride
and groom had to conduct the Fatikha-Tuy engagement ceremony,
which has long been part of Uzbek culture.
There are many interesting customs and rituals in Uzbek culture. Among them is Fatikha-Tuy
– the day of the engagement. According to tradition, the groom’s family finds a bride for their
son. First, everyone learns about the bride in detail: where she grew up, who her parents are,
whether she is decent. If the reputation of the chosen bride is good, then the matchmakers from
the groom’s side go to visit the bride’s parents to get acquainted. In modern Uzbekistan, the bride
and groom can get to know each other before the matchmaking. But the Fatikha-tuy ceremony
must necessarily happen, and strictly after the approval of the parents.
When the day of Fatikha-tuy arrives, guests, namely the groom’s family, gather in the bride’s
house, some relatives come too, and a representative of the mahalla or an elder – an honorary
aksakal should join. The representatives of the groom explain the point of the visit, and if they
get consent to the engagement, another important ceremony is performed – Non sindirish –
Breaking the bread. After the newly made bride and groom break the flatbread in half, they can
be considered engaged. After the ceremony, the families exchange gifts and agree on holding a
wedding celebration. With this a new family will be born soon!

Another national pride of Uzbekistan is the Zaamin State Mountain-juniper Reserve. This area has
long been famous for its unique nature and healing air.
The national park with an area of more than 26 hectares is located in the north of the Turkestan
Range in the Zaamin district of the Jizzakh region. The reserve was first explored in the 1860s by the
Russian scientist and biologist A. Fedchenko. And in 1960, in order to preserve rare juniper forests,
with their peculiar fauna, the reserve itself was formed.
The relief of the reserve is a pronounced mountain range. The highest ridge reaches a height of
3500 meters above sea level. In the south, the territory is surrounded by the slopes of the Turkestan
Range, separated by narrow deep gorges. In the north, the reserve has a more eased relief with
ledges covered with juniper forests.
The climate of the reserve is sharply continental, which makes the change of seasons the most
pronounced. In spring, the forests are covered with lush greenery. Most precipitation falls in April,
October and January. In July and August temperatures rise to
+32 degrees, and in January it can drop to -30.
Due to the sharp temperature fluctuations, frost-resistant trees and shrubs grow in the reserve.
Among the representatives of the flora, medicinal plants with healing properties are noted: essential
oil, fruit and berry, tannic ones.
Walking through the thickets of Zaamin, travelers can pick rose hips, mint, vetch, tarragon, onions,
cloves, hawthorn, geraniums and much more.
56
NATURE
The reserve is rich in its diverse fauna. Here live such animals and birds as wolves, vultures, tits,
stomp hare, Turkestan agama, Turkestan eagle owl, black-throated thrush, lake frog, stone marten
and many others. The Turkestan lynx, the forest dormouse and even the white-clawed bear hide in
the forest thicket.
In addition to the unique nature, the reserve has many natural and historical attractions: huge
red boulders of a bizarre shape in a clearing in Kyzyl-ataksay, the ancient Boboyongok walnut tree,
Peshagor cave, the Khujai Serob-ota shrine.
The Zaamin Reserve is a popular place for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts. Here you can spend
an unforgettable time in nature, go mountain climbing,
go hiking or just enjoy the beauty of mountains, lakes and waterfalls, as well as see rare animals
and birds.
In addition, therapeutic rest is available in Zaamin throughout the year. Zaamin sanatorium is
located not far from the park. In the recreational zone there are many boarding houses, sanatoriums,
rest houses and children’s camps, which have become a favorite vacation spot for all Uzbeks for
several decades.
Thus, the Zaamin State Mountain and juniper Reserve is a must-see place, a unique corner of
nature that amazes with its beauty and diversity of landscapes.
23rd International Exhibition Triennale Milano:
Tashkent Modernism.Index project
On April 17-23, 2023, the 23rd International
Exhibition Triennale Milano was held in Milan
(Italy). During this exhibition, a presentation of
the unique Tashkent Modernism.Index project
was held.
This project aims to interpret and preserve
the modernist architecture of Tashkent. Thanks
to the project, the international community learnt
about a unique architectural style – Tashkent
modernism. The experts took as a basis 20
monuments of modernism, representing the
architectural, social and historical aspects of
Tashkent.
Tashkent Modernism is an architectural
style that developed in Tashkent between the
1950s and 1990s. It was associated with the
modernization of the city, which was taking place
at that time. The main characteristics of Tashkent
modernism were the use of new materials and
technologies, the functionality and simplicity of
forms, as well as the unique style of facades
construction.
It is considered one of the most interesting
and original architectural styles that developed
during that historical period.
Today, many buildings designed in this style
are architectural monuments and attract the
attention of tourists from all over the world.
The Panorama Cinema Hall was chosen as
one of the objects of study of the project. It is
The Times
www.bbc.com
British magazine The Times has published 13 of the
best alluring and faraway places to travel in 2023. The
publication included our ancient city of Samarkand in the
list. The list also includes: Australia, Kenya, Qatar, Nagoya,
Maldives, Istanbul and others.
“The golden age in Samarkand began with the era of
the Great Silk Road, when Genghis Khan was building a
powerful empire. However, the beginning of the 21st century
shows the same prosperity: after the arrival of high-speed
trains connecting two other ancient, mesmerizing tourist
centers of Uzbekistan - Bukhara and Khiva, azure-domed
mosques and jewel-studded mausoleums were joined by
a new luxurious complex. Located near the city, the Silk
Road Samarkand complex offers tourists first-class hotels
and unique gastronomy,” the newspaper notes.
