2023 LILLIBRIDGE OUTSTANDING
PHYSICIAN AWARD RECIPIENT
For 10 years, Lillibridge Healthcare Services has
presented an award to a physician who exhibits
exceptional leadership and devoted service
to Atrium Health Cabarrus and the Cabarrus
Healthcare Foundation. This year’s recipient: Dr.
Chris Christy has dedicated 30 years of his life
to our hospital, our community and some of our
sickest patients. Dr. Chris Christy, cardiothoracic
surgeon, is known for his bedside manner,
dedication to his patients and love of our
hospital and community.
Dr. Christy was born at Cabarrus Memorial
Hospital, now Atrium Health Cabarrus, in 1957 and grew up in Cabarrus
County. He learned about respect, responsibility and commitment at a
young age in Boy Scouts and eventually became an Eagle Scout. Dr. Christy
graduated from Northwest Cabarrus High School where he played football,
ran track and served as his class President.
Dr. Christy received a Cannon Scholarship and graduated from Davidson
College in 1979. During his junior and senior years at Davidson, he worked
weekends as an orderly at the then Cabarrus Memorial Hospital. He
attended medical school at UNC Chapel Hill, thinking he would like to
practice family medicine. It was during rotations he realized how exciting it
was to provide surgical help to improve patients’ quality of life.
Dr. Christy did his general surgery residency at Memorial Medical Center
in Savannah, GA. There he met Dr. Thomas Yeh, a cardiothoracic surgeon,
who would change his life and career path. Dr. Christy operated with Dr. Yeh
every opportunity he had and decided he wanted to be a cardiothoracic
surgeon as well. He had the opportunity to stay in Savannah, but Dr.
Christy’s “heart” was in Cabarrus County. He returned to Concord in
June 1988 to join Piedmont Surgical Clinic and to raise his family in the
community that meant so much to him.
Following a lot of late nights, a fellowship with Sanger Heart & Vascular
Institute and additional training at Duke University Hospital, Dr. Christy and
his team performed the first open heart surgery at our hospital on February
15, 1993 with long-time nurse Shelley Thevenin and Ed Ristaino the chief
perfusionist. While the hospital has seen many changes throughout the
years, Dr. Christy’s dedication has not wavered. Along with his partners,
Dr. Takla and Cicci and their OR team and the ACCU nurses, they perform
a service for this community that was once just a dream. This year is extra
special with the Cardiac program celebrating 30 years of providing care to
our community which began with Dr. Christy.
Our community also shared their love for Dr. Christy through our Annual
We Love Our Doctor’s Campaign during the month of March. Dr. Christy
received the most submissions throughout the Campaign from peers and

community members. As the winner of this campaign, Dr. Christy received
a Chef’s Table Experience at 73 & Main Restaurant in Mt. Pleasant, NC.
Atrium Health Cabarrus, the Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation and this
community are blessed to have Dr. Christy and his team bring such an
important healthcare need to our community. It was his strong-will and
commitment to this community that enabled families and patients to
stay close to home during a trying and scary time in their life. Join us in
congratulating Dr. Chris Christy on this well-deserved award.

ANNUAL BAR-BA-BREW SUPPORTS

The annual Harrisburg Bar-Ba-Brew on Saturday, March 25th was a huge
success. This annual BBQ competition is a family friendly event that has
become very popular in Cabarrus County. We are truly honored that

Children’s Center at the Harrisburg
Bar-Ba-Brew. This year following the
event, Michael Anderson presented a
check to the Jeff Gordon Children’s
Center for $11,533.
STRIDES FOR
STROKE
This spring the 7th Annual Strides
for Stroke 5K and 10K Walk/
Run raised over $11,000. During
this event, community members,
stroke survivors and their families,
doctors and employees at Atrium
Health Cabarrus gathered to run
or walk and raise awareness about
stroke. The money raised each
year supports our Stroke Support
Group at Atrium Health Cabarrus,
one of the largest stroke support
groups in the state of NC.

Dancers from Let’s Dance Studio come
together to hold their annual showcase to
support the Jeff Gordon Children’s Center.
We thank Mark and Lynn Russell for their
support in putting together and organizing
this showcase fundraiser. To date they have
given over $30,000 to the Jeff Gordon
Children’s Center.

all celebrated being together in-person for the first time since 2019, after 3
years of not being able to gather. It was truly a community family reunion! Most
importantly, we came together with THANK the goal YOU of raising TO OUR significant SPONSORS dollars for
our hospital, Atrium Health Cabarrus, with 100 percent of the proceeds raised
benefiting our hospital! Thank you for helping us raise over $260,000.

silent auction area and an outside garden. The evening program featured new
dinner entertainment by magician GOLD Bryan Saint - $15,000 along with a live auction and then
ending the night dancing with a local Bill and favorite Ann Cat Cannon 5 band.

removed to allow for the new
elevators. The relocation project for
the new Donor Wall will be coming
this Fall to its new home in the
Medical Arts Building.
