JANUARY 2024
PERSPECTIVE
FROM THE FRONTLINES
CRISIS TO RESTORATION
ESCALATING CRISIS
Cabarrus County is experiencing a housing crisis that is escalating into a homeless crisis.
Many households are being overwhelmed by the weight of local and national economic
and housing trends. The largest group facing housing crisis in Cabarrus County is
families with children and the fastest growing group in housing crisis is senior adults
living alone. Cooperative Christian Ministry’s (CCM) Path to Stability transitional housing
model is delivering positive outcomes for households recovering from loss of stable
housing.
ED HOSACK
CEO
As Cabarrus County's largest provider of
transitional housing, CCM estimates it meets
10% of the present need. County leaders and the
City of Kannapolis have partnered with CCM in support of our Bold
New Initiative to increase transitional housing capacity for all of our
community.
Without stable housing, a family cannot safely store and prepare
nutritious food. They cannot maintain adequate rest or proper
hygiene. Without stable housing, it is impossible to support the
disciplines of academics or employment, nor is it possible to engage in
extracurricular activities or community life.
VIABLE SOLUTIONS
The Rebuilders Campus @ Brown Mill Commons
CCM purchased ten acres in June 2023, with the
help of Cabarrus County ARP funds, to develop
a residential campus and commercial center on
Cabarrus Avenue in Concord. The Rebuilders
Campus will create forty-eight individual family
apartments in Phase One and eventually ninetysix
total units in an educational environment built
around the Path to Stability model.
Comprehensive services will be integrated into
a structured curriculum that includes financial,
social, educational and vocational benchmarks.
The controlled environment will include childcare
services, educational supports, healthy activities
and a safe community atmosphere. Phase One
will double CCM’s transitional housing capacity to
serve Cabarrus County households in 2026. Ten
million dollars of the fourteen million needed for
Phase One has been committed.
Brown Mill Commons is developing concurrently
as Phase Two of the project to create
opportunities for local businesses with interest
in providing employment and training to campus
and area residents. Cabarrus Health Alliance
(CHA) will provide community health services
as an anchor tenant at the location. Vocational
training and a variety of community services
will broaden the impact of the new epicenter on
Concord’s emerging gateway.
Grace Place @ Caremoor
Grace Place was originally designed to serve
senior adults in housing crisis. Most often these
are extremely low fixed-income seniors living
alone. In December 2023 CCM purchased
Caremoor Retirement Community with the help
of ARP funding from the city of Kannapolis. The
partnership with the city and the opportunity
presented by Caremoor invites the inclusion of
families with children into the Grace Place model.
Caremoor will continue to operate as a licensed
assisted living community to serve seniors with
an excellent standard of care in a supervised
environment. CCM will coordinate with the
administrator over time to design, plan and
renovate some of the campus facilities to
incorporate children into the campus environment.
Grace Place at Caremoor will create a healthy
and stimulating environment for both young and
not-so-young to find purpose and fulfillment at an
important stage in their life. Three million dollars
of the five million needed for Grace Place @
Caremoor has been committed.
URGENT REQUEST
CCM is moving forward at sixty-eight percent of the funding raised because we cannot
lose another day in developing a solution to our housing crisis. As we move forward, we
need the greatest response ever from our Cabarrus community to create and deliver
these vital resources.
Your Window of Opportunity
is our CALL TO ACTION for your support!
We are asking ten percent of all Cabarrus County households (estimated 8,000) to
engage at a meaningful level to help protect our neighbors in need. In so doing, we also
protect the future of our community. Here is how we ask you to help.
CONTRIBUTE
MONUMENTAL STEPS
…IN FAITH!
As you all learned through Ed’s update at the beginning of this newsletter, Cooperative Christian Ministry
continues to lead by example as we strive to create solutions for our neighbors in need. Those examples,
the Rebuilder’s Campus at Brown Mill Commons and Grace Place at Caremoor, are steps of incredible
faith and trust that God has orchestrated this pathway for CCM to take on these monumental tasks.
While we, as a ministry, believe these steps of creating greater capacities to serve are crucial to meeting
needs that are growing exponentially, we also recognize that the present-day needs are reaching ALL-
TIME highs.
CCM’s HOUSING presently sits at full capacity between
our Mother’s and Children’s facility and throughout our
Teaching Houses. The team experiences an average of 57 online
applications per month (and growing).
CCM’s FOOD PROGRAM saw record-breaking numbers
seeking hunger assistance at our Crisis Center facility during the
last quarter of 2023. Each month, more than 1,100 households
were served, representing over 4,100 individuals… more than a
40% increase over the same period the prior year.
CCM’s FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
services helped 95% of applicants avoid eviction or utility cutoff.
The team assists approximately 300 households/per quarter with
rent or utilities and refers each of them to additional ministry
resources.
INTRODUCING THE MY FATHER'S HOUSE-ANNEX AS CCM’S NEWEST COMPONENT IN OUR
TRANSITIONAL HOUSING CONTINUUM. The program is built on CCM's comprehensive Path to Stability
model and is structured to include expectant and newly parenting mothers through a partnership with
the SUN Clinic at the Cabarrus Health Alliance (CHA) and through funding from the McKenzie Opioid
Settlement Grant.
The “Annex” represents a collaborative between
Memorial Baptist Church of Kannapolis, Cabarrus
Health Alliance, Atrium Health - Cabarrus and
Cannon Charitable Interests. The facility will
provide housing and services for five resident
families and will complete the replacement of
capacity lost in 2022 with the closing of My
Father's House.
Through this partnership, CHA will work
collaboratively with CCM to support these
women and children. This partnership will
encourage continued recovery through ongoing
participation in the SUN Clinic program
which includes behavioral health counseling,
medication management, peer support specialist
services and a host of wrap around services
provided by SUN Project community partners.
