2nd ANNUAL
LIGHTS OF LOVE
FUNDS RAISED SUPPORT THE
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS AT
ATRIUM HEALTH CABARRUS
It might have been one of the coldest nights of
the year but our 2nd annual Lights of Love Tree
Lighting Ceremony warmed the hearts of all who
attended. The Lights of Love program, presented
by Wilkinson Funeral Home, allowed our donors to
honor or memorialize someone who has impacted
their life. The ceremony, held on November 29th
at the Margie Campbell Healing Garden, was well
attended with over 150 guests who joined together
to remember those they recognized through the
Lights of Love program.
During the evening, Mayor Bill Dusch,
Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation Board
Member and co-chair of the program,
shared a special story of a grateful
patient whose life had been touched by
many of our medical teams at Atrium
Health Cabarrus. Tom’s story begins
when he arrives at Cabarrus Emergency
Department by EMS.
story--another grateful
patient of Atrium
Health Cabarrus.
An 82-year-old native of Concord, Tom
was born on August 13, 1941, at our very
own Atrium Health Cabarrus, then known
as Cabarrus Memorial Hospital. Last
year, a lot of things changed for Tom; on
Sunday, September 25, Tom ran his usual
20 miles as he was preparing once again to run the Boston Marathon. Tom
ran the Boston Marathon in 1983 and again in 2016. He was entered in the
race for 2022; however, due to a leg injury he was unable to attend the race
that year. His goal is to run it for a 3rd time after turning 80. On Monday,
following Sunday’s long run, Tom hit the pavement for a 5-mile recovery
run. Once he was finished, he came home and sat down with his iPad to
email his sister a birthday card. Tom’s wife, Joyce, turned the corner into
the living room and saw Tom shaking in the chair with his arms up near his
chest. He appeared to be having a stroke or a seizure. Joyce immediately
called 911. The Cabarrus EMS team arrived within minutes, intubated Tom,
and rushed him to the Emergency Department at Atrium Health Cabarrus.
After multiple tests, a stroke and seizure were ruled out. Doctors said
that Tom’s blood pressure was extremely low. Tom was sent to the ICU on
Tuesday. Tom’s family was not sure if he was going to make it and began
to call their family to come to the hospital and see him. Tom’s sister came
in from out of town to visit on Tuesday and came straight to the ICU. After
staying a while and visiting with family, his sister left. As she was walking
out of the hospital, over the intercom she heard, “Code Blue Room 2309.”
Tom’s sister recognized that room number and immediately.....
PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Dear Friends of Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation,
This is an exciting time for our Foundation as we
start the new year celebrating our 30th Anniversary
of supporting our beloved resource, Atrium Health
Cabarrus. Your support has enabled us to raise over
$85 million, providing funding for equipment, programs,
and projects that enhance patient care at Atrium Health
Cabarrus. Thank you to all our donors and sponsors for
your generosity to our hospital as it strives to be the first and best choice
for care in our community.
The Foundation has been quite busy during the last few months with many
activities and events. In this edition of the newsletter, you will see many
of the amazing things that have been happening. We want to thank our
community for supporting our 43rd Annual Foundation Fashion Night.
This year, we raised over $127,000. Thank you to the City Club for hosting
another wonderful event, all of our Taste of Cabarrus participants, the
Stores and Boutiques, as well as the Models and Hair Stylists who played a
very important part in helping us raise funds.
Additionally, we want to thank everyone for their support of our 2nd
Annual Lights of Love Program. We held our Tree Lighting Ceremony on
November 29, 2023, in the beautiful Margie Campbell Healing Garden.
Many of our friends joined us as we lit a 20-foot Christmas tree, where
each light represented someone honored or remembered by someone in
our community. Thank you to the AL Brown High School Chorus for joining
us this year and to our amazing program co-chairs: Mayor Bill Dusch, Jane
Jacobs, Rhonda Wright and Kenny Winn. Thank you to these incredible
leaders for their support, leadership and dedication to our Lights of Love
Program.
This year we are excited to celebrate our 30th Anniversary with each of
you. Please stay connected with us; check your mailboxes for all our 2024
upcoming events! We hope to see many of you for our 30th Annual Gala on
April 27th!
Being in a hospital anytime is hard but especially for
children during the holidays. The Concord Amazon
facility and its employees helped bring many smiles
to our patients as they all dressed up as Polar
Express characters and arrived in the Amazon truck
ready to deliver lots of toys.
After unloading the Amazon truck, the employees helped to make sure our
pediatric patients grabbed their golden ticket and hopped on the Amazon train.
Patients made their way to the North Pole in the playroom at the Jeff Gordon
Children’s Center at Atrium Health Cabarrus.
During this special time, Amazon set up a hot chocolate bar, played the Polar
Express movie, and even helped Santa visit each patient. Our Foundation and
Hospital is thankful for a wonderful experience our patients and families were able
to enjoy with Amazon’s help.
These types of experiences and donations
from our community are what help our
children continue to be kids while in the
hospital receiving medical care.
Wear Pink Our annual Wear Pink Fundraiser was another
great success because of the organizations and
businesses who stepped up to the plate and
proved to us that they are passionate about
raising awareness for Breast Cancer! Businesses
invited their employees to pay $5 to wear pink
one day in October to raise money for the
Breast Health Center at Atrium Health Cabarrus.
We were amazed at the outpouring of support
and are happy to announce that we raised
$2,940! Thank you for your support! The Breast
Health Center offers screenings, diagnoses and
treatments using the very latest technology.
