DEAR SAINTS FANS, WELCOME BACK TO ST MARY’S
FOR ANOTHER EXCITING GAME AS WE TAKE ON
LEICESTER CITY IN THE SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP.
It feels like a long
time since we last
played here, in front
of our home fans,
when we enjoyed a
good win over QPR.
It was probably a
day when the result
was better than the
performance, but
we won the game
because of our
character and the
courage we showed
to keep trying to play
the way we want to
play, even when we
had tricky moments
in the game.
To follow that up
with the defeat at
Sunderland was
obviously hugely
disappointing, but
also a big day for our
learning. Together,
we have to make
sure that’s the worst
day we have this
season.
It’s been a long time
waiting to react
to that result, but
tonight’s game, live
on Sky against a
top team, gives us
06 « SAINTS « we march on

we march on » SAINTS » 07
a great opportunity
to put that right.
I’d like to welcome Enzo
Maresca, his staff and
players, for a game I’m
really looking forward
to. It’s two teams who
want to dominate the
ball, and will provide
a good gauge of
where we both are in
our development.
I’m pleased to have a
settled squad now that
the transfer window
has closed. That first
month of the season
was always going
to be tough for us to
navigate, with a lot
of uncertainty, so to
know exactly where
we stand and be in
a position to move
forward together as a
“It’s two
teams who
want to
dominate the
ball, and
will provide
a good gauge
of where
we both
are in our
development.”
group with ten points
already on the board
is a good place to be.
We were delighted to
get the two deals over
the line on deadline
day, and to welcome
Taylor Harwood-
Bellis and Ross
Stewart to the club.
Taylor is a leader, with
experience beyond
his years, including
a lot of games in the
Championship, which
will help us. Ross is
a forward player
with tremendous
athleticism, intelligence
and goalscoring
ability, and we’re
excited to get him fit
and start working with
him on the training
ground.
Both players have
won promotions
recently in their
careers, and that’s the
sort of mentality we
want in our group.
STEWART AND
HARWOOD-
BELLIS ARRIVE ON
DEADLINE DAY
Transfer deadline day
saw Southampton
add two more fresh
faces in the shape of
striker Ross Stewart
and defender Taylor
Harwood-Bellis.
Stewart has signed
a three-year deal at
St Mary’s following
a prolific spell at
Sunderland, where he
scored 40 goals in 81
appearances after
signing for the Black
Cats in January 2021
from Ross County.
The 27-year-old, who is
currently approaching
a return to fitness
having been sidelined
this year with an
Achilles injury, has
been capped twice for
Scotland.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis (left) and Ross Stewart
Earlier in the day saw
Saints complete the
capture of Harwood-
Bellis on a season-long
loan from Manchester
City, as the 21-yearold
returned to the
Championship where
he was a title winner
with Burnley last
season.
Appearing 35 times
for Vincent Kompany’s
side, the central
defender arrives on
the south coast with
73 Championship
appearances already
to his name, having
previously enjoyed
spells with Blackburn
Rovers and Stoke City,
with a loan spell at
Anderlecht in 2021/22
taking his total senior
appearances to 105.
After a standout season
at Turf Moor, Harwood-
Bellis captained England
Under-21s to Euro 2023
glory in the summer,
with Lee Carsley’s side
lifting the trophy without
conceding a single
goal.
Stewart and Harwood-
Bellis joined defender
Mason Holgate and
winger Ryan Fraser, who
also signed late in the
transfer window, taking
Saints’ total summer
arrivals to eight.
SOUTHAMPTON FC
WOMEN news
SAINTS SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT
OF 2023/24 CAMPAIGN
Southampton FC Women were subjected to
their first defeat of the season as high-flying
Sunderland beat them by a single goal at St
Mary’s.
Going into the game
looking to make it three
wins from three, Saints
were faced by an
unbeaten Sunderland
who had posed issues
to Marieanne Spacey-
Cale’s side last season.
Saints looked offbeat
in the opening
Molly Pike was a
bright spark in Saints’
battle with Sunderland
encounters, with
the more physical
Sunderland
dominating possession
all over the pitch.
Molly Pike provided
the only glimpse of
anything resembling a
chance in the opening
15 minutes, managing
to get a shot off after
turning from a throwin,
but the ball was far
from troubling Claudia
Moan between the
Sunderland sticks.
In the later stages of
the first half, Saints
began to look more
like the team who
had won their two
opening games, with
both Sophia Pharoah
and Pike having
opportunities before
the half-time whistle.
Sunderland, though,
showed their intent
straight from the start
of the second half,
shooting directly from
kick-off.
Ten minutes later,
capitalising on a
lethargic Saints start,
Mary McAteer provided
a searching cross into
the box and Jenna
Dear timed her run
perfectly to leave
Saints’ defence with
too much to do, as
she slotted the ball
past Rendell to give
Sunderland the lead.
Saints were unlucky
not to go level less
than five minutes later,
as Wilkinson found
herself inside the box
with the ball at her
feet. However, under
pressure, she slammed
her shot just wide.
The home side went
even closer through
Morris shortly after. The
pacey number 2 raced
10 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 11
Paige Peake and Saints were
dejected following the defeat
past her defender,
tipped the ball round
the keeper and shot
from a tight angle. The
ball skimmed across
the box, evading all the
red shirts lurking, and
passing millimetres
from the post.
Lexi Lloyd-Smith was
the substitute to enter
the fray in the 60th
minute and Saints
looked dominant for
a 10 minutes, but a
number of chances
went untaken. In
response, Marieanne
Spacey-Cale provided
more attacking
firepower as Emily
Kraft replaced Katie
Wilkinson in the 75th
minute. But, as the half
wore on, it increasingly
looked like it wouldn’t
be Saints’ day because
despite the home
side creating all the
chances, they arrived
without the final
product.
Lloyd-Smith went
agonisingly close to
equalising in added
time, as she reacted
to an improvised
ball forward and
slammed goalward
at close range, only
to be denied by an
impressive Moan save.
Despite creating the
better chances in the
closing stages, it was
Sunderland who came
away with all three
points, moving up to
second in the table
and pushing Saints to
third.
SMALLBONE
FOR WILL SMALLBONE, MEMORIES OF
FACING LEICESTER CITY COME WITH A
GRIMACE. TWO AND A HALF YEARS ON
FROM THE MOST CHALLENGING TIME IN HIS
LIFE, THE MIDFIELDER IS PLAYING THE BEST
FOOTBALL OF HIS CAREER AND BECOMING
AN INCREASINGLY INFLUENTIAL FIGURE FOR
THE CLUB HE JOINED 15 YEARS AGO…
12 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON

we march on » SAINTS » 13

Will recently committed his future to Saints by signing a three-year contract
“Leicester, for me?”
Will Smallbone pauses
for thought. “It’s a very
sad time, a dark time
in my life.”
Tonight’s reunion
with the Foxes, a
Championship fixture
few would have
predicted 12 months
ago, leaves the
Irishman with a score
to settle.
It was at an empty
King Power Stadium
in January 2021
that he suffered an
anterior cruciate
ligament injury – every
footballer’s worst
nightmare – in a 2-0
defeat that would keep
him sidelined for nine
months.
There’s never a good
time for any young
14 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
player to go through
that – Smallbone was
20 at the time – but
the sense of loss was
heightened by the loss
of something else: his
hair.
Alongside a serious
knee injury, the
youngster was
diagnosed with
alopecia. His world was
caving in, and Covid
restrictions left him
stuck inside, alone with
his thoughts, without
any form of escapism.
“The doctors can't say
if they are linked,” he
was quoted in 2021,
speaking publicly
about alopecia for the
first time. “Because
of the injury and the
stress of being out for
so long, they can't say
if that caused it, but
the timings line up. It
would make sense for
them to coincide.
“Mine was a gradual,
steady increase of how
bad it was. It started off
as a really small patch
of hair I was missing,
which slowly grew and
then eventually just
started falling out from
all sides. The doctor's
advice was just to
shave it because
eventually it was going
to get to that anyway.”
Smallbone is not one
to exaggerate. He
speaks as he plays,
calm and understated,
but now that he can
reflect on it all, having
come out the other
side, he recognises
how tough it was.
“I think everything in

that time just seemed
to go against me –
my knee, alopecia
and obviously Covid,
so I couldn’t really do
much. It was a very
dark period for many
people, in terms of
Covid, but especially
for me with having
those big things,” he
says.
“I did feel very… I don’t
want to say down,
but it was a very
tough time. The most
challenging time in
my career, but I made
myself very proud to
come through that
and still come out
the other side playing
football and enjoying
it, and hopefully with
my best years ahead
of me.
“I think it built up a lot
of resilience in me,
which I knew I had
anyway, but maybe
not as much as I
thought I had. I think
it’s a lot of character
building that it did for
me. I wouldn’t say I’m
thankful that I had
it, but maybe in the
long, long run, it was
something good to
experience at a young
age to then allow
you to build whatever
comes in the future.”
Having returned from
injury in October 2021,
Smallbone started only
two Premier League
games that season. His
mind was made up, at
22, that he needed a
loan.
“My aim coming back
(for pre-season last
summer) was always
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 15
to go on loan. I knew
from the season
before I felt I’d done
well in training but just
hadn’t been given the
opportunity, so I said
to myself that I just
wanted to play games
now, and decided
myself that I wanted to
go on loan,” he recalls.
As it happened,
Smallbone was one of
Saints’ most impressive
players that summer,
but he did not change
his stance, and was
right to trust his
instinct.
“It just so happened
that I had a good
pre-season, and
then I went away. We
changed shape a little
bit in that pre-season,
and then I remember
the gaffer (Ralph
January 2021: The injury that would keep Smallbone sidelined for nine months

Setting the tempo: Smallbone in possession against Norwich at St Mary’s
Hasenhüttl) saying to
me, ‘stay,’ because we
were changing shape
to three in midfield and
that helps me.
“But I remember I left
and then within three
or four games it had
changed back to the
other shape that didn’t
really suit me, so that
was definitely the best
decision I made.”
Smallbone will forever
be grateful to Stoke
City for “taking me in
when I needed it,” and
giving him a platform
to rediscover his
confidence that had
taken such a hit, on
and off the field, since
Leicester.
He went on to play 43
league games for the
Potters last season –
more than double his
16 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
Saints career tally – as
his consistency made
him a mainstay in the
side and earned him
his senior debut for
Republic of Ireland,
a game in which he
won the Player of the
Match award for his
performance in a 3-2
win over Latvia.
“The last 12 months has
been massive for me
in my development
as a player. I think
going on loan to Stoke
was massive for me
– I can’t thank them
enough for helping me
to develop,” he says,
quick to express his
gratitude.
“I really enjoyed
it. It was a good
experience, I think,
and it was different
because I was playing
every week and it was
a men’s environment,
so it was really good
from that aspect.
“Also living away from
home was something
new, something that
I really enjoyed. I’d
lived in digs, but never
actually away from
the south, but I think
it helped me to grow
up a lot. My girlfriend
came up with me, so
she made it easier for
me to settle in and not
worry about fending
for myself too much!
She does the cooking –
she’s good.
“It’s a tough league,
there’s a lot of games,
it’s very gruelling.
I found it’s quite
relentless. It’s Saturday,
Tuesday a lot of the
time, it’s a lot of grind
and a lot of teams with
different philosophies.

“Not everyone plays
football the same way,
but that’s the beauty of
it. I think I learned a lot
over the season, good
and bad, and hopefully
I can use it this season
to my advantage.”
The idea that
Smallbone went away
to learn and improve
his game, with the only
thought in his mind to
return to St Mary’s at
the end of it, is wide of
the mark.
Whilst rated highly by
Ralph Hasenhüttl, the
midfielder was not
a natural fit for the
Austrian’s preferred
4-2-2-2 formation,
and admits he was
resigned to leaving
the club he joined as
an eight-year-old –
even after Hasenhüttl
departed last
November, was twice
replaced, and Saints
were relegated.
“With the way it was
when I left, from not
necessarily playing as
much as I would’ve
hoped the year before,
I think I had a mindset
of potentially enjoying
the change that I had
and maybe trying
to carry that on,”
Smallbone reveals.
“When I came back I
only had one year left,
and obviously with all
the change going on,
with us going down,
waiting to see who
we’d bring in.”
The answer was Russell
Martin, and Smallbone
was instantly sold by
WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 17
Project Promotion.
“From the first moment
I spoke to the gaffer
he changed my view
heavily on that, and
his style of play and
the way he is as a
manager and as a
person around the
place, I think it’s really
changed my view
on being around
Southampton, and I
think it’s changed a
lot of the other lads’
as well,” he says,
enthusiastically.
“I was really excited to
work with the manager.
Having played against
them (Swansea) last
year and their style of
play, I thought it was
something that would
really help me. And
yeah, it's only grown

since I've come back,
that belief and positivity
in the side and myself,
I've really enjoyed it.
“The way he plays
is very enticing as
a player, I think it’s
the best football
that a footballer can
see himself playing,
because I think
everyone enjoys when
they have the ball
and they can show
what they can do, and
I think that’s exactly
what Russell wants in
his team. It’s the same
view I have on football
as well.
“I’ve had great
conversations with
him. I spoke to him
in the summer even
before I came back,
and he said how he
was looking forward to
working with me, and
ever since I’ve come
back in from the first
day of pre-season I’ve
really enjoyed the style
of play – the football
has been brilliant.
“It’s got a very positive
vibe around the place
here now. Obviously
I can’t speak for last
year, I wasn’t here, but
slightly negative energy
around the place.
Coming into this year
with new people I think
was important, and
for me coming back
and seeing the change
and everything that's
happened has been a
breath of fresh air.”
Smallbone started the
season conducting
Martin’s midfield
orchestra. Playing
as a No 6 in front
of the back four, he
was outstanding on
the opening night
at Hillsborough,
completing 142 passes
as Saints dominated
Sheffield Wednesday
with possession,
eventually grinding
them down to win the
game late on.
An injury in the
second league game,
against Norwich, saw
Smallbone sit out the
wins over Plymouth and
QPR, and he returned in
a more advanced role
at Sunderland.
Whilst the result ran
away from Saints early
on, interestingly that
position as a No 8 is
more to the player’s
taste, and where he
hopes to play more
often.
18 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 19
“Last year I played all
the games as an 8
really, for Stoke, and I
think that’s where I do
see myself in the long
term,” he explains, “but
I did enjoy the start of
the season, playing as
a 6 – that did get the
best out of me.
“I think my best
qualities and position is
as an 8, and hopefully
as the season goes on
I can show that. Getting
forward and trying to
create and score goals
is something that I
enjoy.
“I think an 8 suits me
best because I can
drop deep to get the
ball or run in behind
as well, so I think that
would be my best
position.”
Before this season,
Smallbone’s last
game in a Saints shirt
came at Leicester on
the final day of the
2021/22 Premier League
campaign.
The uncertainty that’s
followed was put to
bed when the now
23-year-old put pen
to paper on a new
three-year contract at
the end of August, and
Smallbone, fit again,
is happier than ever
in the red and white
stripes.
The summer
departures of James
Ward-Prowse, Theo
Walcott and Nathan
Tella have placed a
greater responsibility
on Saints’ new No
16 – Ward-Prowse’s
former squad number
– to inspire the club’s
promising next wave
of Academy stars,
including Sam Amo-
Ameyaw, Kamari Doyle
and Jayden Meghoma.
Whilst promotion, and
another crack at the
Premier League, is the
long-term goal, in the
short term Smallbone
just wants to put his
Leicester nightmare
behind him, once and
for all.
“I’d love to just play
on Friday, score the
winner and never talk
about Leicester and my
knee again,” he grins.
“For myself, mentally,
I’ve already parked it
and left it in the past.
But it would be a nice
omen to score, to have
a good game against
them and beat them
on Friday.”

DOBSON-
VENTURA SIGNS
PRO DEAL
Southampton Football
Club is delighted to
announce that young
defender Tommy
Dobson-Ventura
has signed his first
professional contract
until 2026.
The youngster has
been with Saints since
he was eight years
old, rising through
the Academy before
signing his scholarship
earlier this summer.
Having only just turned
17, the centre-back
stepped up to the
Under-18s age group
last season, making 15
appearances including
a cameo off the bench
at Villa Park during the
FA Youth Cup run.
This campaign has
seen the defender
kick on as part of
the Under-18s side,
Tommy Dobson-Ventura
something he sees
as the next step in his
climb to first team
football at the club.
“It’s a great
achievement,” he said.
“I feel like it’s what
you’re working to ever
since you were a little
lad, so it just feels
amazing to sit down
and sign my first ever
professional contract.
“Last season helped
me build confidence,
especially as an
Under-16 playing up.
Now I can do it as an
Under-18 and help the
boys who haven’t done
it before and really
lead the process of
going through the [FA
Youth] Cup too.
“The aims this season
are to smash it out
with the 18s, get
performances and
results, and hopefully
push on with Under-21s
football and go from
there.”
On the other end of
eight different venues
across the city. The
the aim of fostering
stronger, safer and
more inclusive
addressing gender
equality in our city.
It’s one of our five
a huge part of our
the Changemakers
girls aged 11 to 16 take
part in workshops
designed to build
confidence, draw out
their passions and
develop leadership
skills for the future.
For the 2023/24
later in the autumn,
we’re expanding
GOING
AWAY
by Barry Webb
I DIGRESS TODAY FROM DESCRIBING MEMORIES OF
SUPPORTERS GOING AWAY IN ORDER TO SHARE TALES
OF SAINTS KITS “GOING AWAY”. THANKS TO ROSEMARIE
ROBINSON, WES MAUGHAN AND GREG BAKER FOR
THEIR ASSISTANCE IN PRODUCING THIS ARTICLE.
I first became aware
of Saints shirts and
other kit going to Africa
when a number of
individuals donated
a great amount of
kit which a group of
us took on a visit to
the Kick4Life centre
in Lesotho in 2014.
group in Lesotho was
Rosemarie Robinson
and she has continued
to take donated items
to Africa, notably
to Supernova FC, a
team from a village
on the border of
Kenya and Uganda.
Rosemarie said: “I
kitted them out last
year with Saints kits
and nearly-new
donated boots. I paid
for the team to come
down to Nakuru for
the weekend and we
volunteers played
against them. We also
donated Finalissima
T-shirts to a local
ladies team in Nakuru.
“I was even able to sort
out new third shirts for
the men’s team and
a whole strip for the 12
to 14-year-old team.
Rosemarie Robinson)
The village pastor had
started the team to
keep young men off
the streets and out of
trouble. He said they
are so proud of their kit
as no other team has
anything like it and it
has given them a real
sense of identity and
pride in representing
their village.”
Wes Maughan played
for the Saints between
1958 and 1962. He has
since worked with
charities in Africa,

WE MARCH ON » SAINTS » 35
notably in Kenya. Wes
is an active member
of the Salvation
Army and he sent
this photo of one of
the teams which has
been a beneficiary
of kit donations.
Wes was able
to arrange the
distribution of the
shirts through the
club. Saints’ director of
community Greg Baker
points out: “Although
it is clear that the club
never plans to have
surplus stock, it is
almost inevitable that
at the end of each
season there can be
items going spare and,
rather than going to
landfill, some are given
to fans and contacts
that have links to
various countries.
“The club seeks to
use any stock that is
left over in the most
effective ways possible:
items are distributed
locally through the
Saints Foundation and
other local charities
and/or they are sent
“One distributor is the
charity Care & Relief
for the Young [CRY]
(cry.org.uk), who have
recently sent shirts
to Kenya, Egypt, Togo
and Madagascar.
Another charity that
we support is called
His Church Charity
(hischurch.org.uk).
“We are currently well
sorted for distribution
partners; we often
get others reaching
out but unfortunately
we aren’t able to
accommodate them
at this time.”
Club historian Duncan Holley examines some of the
oldest Saints memorabilia…
IN THE QPR PROGRAMME WE TOLD THE STORY OF THE ST
MARY’S FOOTBALL CLUB’S FIRST FORAY INTO COMPETITIVE
FOOTBALL WITH SUCCESSFUL PARTICIPATION IN THE
1887/88 HAMPSHIRE FA JUNIOR CHALLENGE CUP
COMPETITION AND HOW THEY REPEATED THE FEAT IN 1889.
The following year they
were successful for
a third time, beating
Lymington in the final
and the silver-plated
trophy was given them
to keep permanently.
It had been presented
to the Hampshire FA by
Charles Baring Young
the Conservative MP
for Christchurch. It took
pride of place in the
club’s boardroom and
nearly 50 years later
was on display when
the club celebrated its
golden jubilee with a
dinner at the Guildhall in
1935, by which time the
trophy was being used
by the Southampton
Schools FA who
awarded it annually
36 « SAINTS « WE MARCH ON
to the top school in
the town, starting with
Woolston in 1930.
The cup disappeared
in the 1950s, lying
forgotten in a school
cupboard until 2013
when it was nearly
thrown into a skip
during a clear-out.
Instead, I was asked
for my opinion and I
was able to identify
it as the club’s first
ever trophy. Today it
is back, in its rightful
place at St Mary’s
stadium.
Having won the Junior
Cup three years in a
row the next logical
step was to enter the
Senior Cup and this
the club did for the
1890/91 tournament.
Find out how they
fared in the next home
programme where I
will also be featuring
the first ever match
card – the forerunner
of the matchday
programme.

Saints’ equaliser in a
pivotal victory over
Leicester at The Dell.
With only three games
of the Premier League
season to go, Saints
were in the bottom
three – where they’d
spent the entire
campaign. But James
Beattie’s improbable
volley from a tight
angle propelled Saints
out of the drop zone,
and further wins
over Wimbledon and
Everton made it three
in a row to complete
the great escape.

Relegation from
the Premier League
last season brought
a miserable end
to a decade of
unparalleled success
for Leicester City.
After promotion as
Championship title
winners in 2014, the
Foxes went on to
become unlikely
Premier League
champions two years
later before then
going on to reach the
Champions League
quarter-finals, lift the
FA Cup and reach
the semi-finals of a
European competition
for the first time.
The Foxes won just nine
league games last
term, falling out of the
top flight in a season
of upheaval which
saw manager Brendan
Rodgers depart in
April after four years in
charge. Former Aston
Villa gaffer Dean Smith
was named Foxes boss
until the end of the
season, but couldn’t
save them from the
drop. In June, treblewinning
Manchester
City assistant coach
Enzo Maresca was
named Leicester’s
manager.
Their 100 per cent
winning start to the
new campaign came
to an abrupt end with
a home defeat to
Hull City prior to the
international break. It
was the first loss for the
Foxes since Maresca
took charge and saw
them drop off the top
of the Championship
table and down to
third.
Nonetheless, City will
be pleased with their
start to life back in the
second tier, especially
given the rebuilding
job that has seen
star players such as
James Maddison,
Youri Tielemans and
Harvey Barnes depart
for pastures new.
However, the likes of
Jamie Vardy, Kelechi
Iheanacho and
Wilfred Ndidi remain,
while ex-Saint Jannik
Vestergaard has come
in from the cold.
we march on » SAINTS » 43
THE BOSS:
Enzo Maresca
Leicester appointed Manchester
City assistant coach Enzo
Maresca as their manager in
June. The 43-year-old Italian
joined the Foxes just six days
after City’s Champions League
final win. Maresca has had a
long association with English
football during an eclectic
playing and coaching career. He
was a teenage midfielder when
he joined West Bromwich Albion,
before he left for Juventus, later
playing in Spain with Sevilla,
where he won five trophies.
Maresca then had spells at
Olympiakos in Greece, back
in Spain with Malaga before
ending his playing days in Italy’s
Serie B with Hellas Verona in
2017. His coaching career has
been just as diverse, with roles at
Ascoli, Sevilla, West Ham United
and Manchester City’s Under-
23s. His first experience as a
first-team manager lasted just
180 days at Parma as they were
relegated from Serie A, but he
returned to the Etihad Stadium
in the summer of 2022 to help
City win the Premier League, FA
Cup and Champions League.
ONE TO WATCH:
Jannik
Vestergaard
Jannik Vestergaard wasn’t
expecting to still be at Leicester
by the time the transfer deadline
passed, let alone play in every
Championship game so far
this season. The defender was
out of favour under Brendan
Rodgers but has enjoyed a new
lease of life under Enzo Maresca
– although the return of Conor
Coady from injury could give
the boss a selection headache.
“I honestly didn’t think a few
months ago that I’d be at
Leicester now,” Vestergaard
said. “Our new manager has a
positive style of play with much
more possession. He has a clear
philosophy, and more work is
being done with tactics.” Despite
being signed by Rodgers from
Southampton, Vestergaard’s
relationship with the Northern
Irishman deteriorated, and
he was forced to train alone
in March. He had arrived at
the King Power in August 2021,
having featured 79 times for
Saints following his move from
Borussia Mönchengladbach in
the summer of 2018.

THE LOCAL
LOWDOWN
WE ASKED LEICESTER CITY EXPERT ROB TANNER, FOOTBALL
WRITER FOR THE ATHLETIC, TO PREVIEW TONIGHT’S GAME
FROM THE VISITORS' POINT OF VIEW...
Leicester’s relegation
from the Premier
League came as a
shock to the football
world. How was it
viewed in the city?
Just as much of a shock,
even more so. I think
there was the feeling
that after the title win,
consecutive European
campaigns and the FA
Cup win that Leicester
were established in the
Premier League.
The club stated in its
annual accounts that
their main objective was
to disrupt the Big Six,
close that huge gap and
qualify for Europe on a
consistent basis. That is
why the wage bill rose
to the seventh highest
in the division and why
they subsequently had
to pump the brakes
because they were
concerned about UEFA’s
new FFP regulations,
rather than the Premier
League’s.
The Pandemic had a
huge impact on the club
as it stifled their revenue
44 « SAINTS « we march on
growth just at a time
when they were showing
great ambition. Usually
when a club is relegated
the fans can point
at a lack of ambition
from club owners, but
in Leicester’s case the
opposite was true. They
were chasing the Big Six,
but the problem is they
are a moving target,
with their huge revenue
streams and global
branding.
Even so, with the quality
Leicester had at their
disposal they should
never have been in
genuinely relegation
strife, but the Premier
League can be an
unforgiving competition
if you lose focus.
How has the club
navigated the
intervening period and
how much has the
team changed from last
season?
They decided to have
a completely fresh
start. Former manager
Brendan Rodgers had
called for a squad
refresh, but with 15
players departing and
nine coming in, it is a
total rebuild in many
ways, and with the
appointment of Enzo
Maresca, they have
gone in a completely
new direction.
They have shown
commitment to
Maresca’s approach
and vision to the extent
that two players they
recruited in January now
don’t fit into the plan.
Victor Kristiansen is out
on loan at Bologna and
Harry Souttar hasn’t
been included in a
squad yet.
How have the
performances looked in
the early weeks of the
new campaign?
Despite the defeat to
Hull City just before the
international break, it
has still been the best
ever start to a season in
Leicester’s history with
six straight wins in all
competitions (four in the

we march on » SAINTS » 45
Championship and two
in the Carabao Cup).
But I think most fans will
appreciate that this is
still a work in progress
under Maresca and
there are areas of their
play that need refining.
They like to dominate
possession and push
high up the pitch,
which can leave them
vulnerable to the
counter-attack if they
get caught building
from the back, but it is
a risk Maresca doesn’t
seem too concerned
about as he is totally
committed to his
philosophy.
How well equipped is
the squad to mount a
promotion push?
I think they have done
some good business,
but only time will tell how
good the recruitment
has truly been. Bringing
in Conor Coady and
Harry Winks, two
England internationals,
straight away was a
coup. Goalkeeper Mads
Hermansen takes the
sweeper-keeper role
to another level and he
was Maresca’s number
one target.
Casera Casadei looks a
real talent in midfield as
well but keeping Kelechi
Iheaancho, who has
become the main No
9 in Maresca’s system,
could be the best piece
of business yet as he
plays the way Maresca
wants his main striker
to, dropping deep to
allow space for midfield
runners to exploit.
Having lost James
Maddison and Harvey
Barnes, the question is
do they now possess
enough creativity in the
final third, but they have
recruited three wingers
in Stephy Mavididi,
Yunus Akgun and Abdul
Fatawu.
What do you expect
from tonight’s game?
A good test of Leicester’s
development under
Maresca. So far they
have worn teams
down and scored late
winners in most games
because they dominate
possession for long
spells.
But so do Southampton.
I looked at the stats
from the first five games
to assess Leicester’s
progress and noticed
that the only team to
have more passing
sequences was
Southampton, so it will
be two teams who want
to dominate the ball.
No side has done that
to Leicester yet so I am
intrigued how they will
deal with that.
