Paige Peake and Saints were
dejected following the defeat
past her defender,
tipped the ball round
the keeper and shot
from a tight angle. The
ball skimmed across
the box, evading all the
red shirts lurking, and
passing millimetres
from the post.
Lexi Lloyd-Smith was
the substitute to enter
the fray in the 60th
minute and Saints
looked dominant for
a 10 minutes, but a
number of chances
went untaken. In
response, Marieanne
Spacey-Cale provided
more attacking
firepower as Emily
Kraft replaced Katie
Wilkinson in the 75th
minute. But, as the half
wore on, it increasingly
looked like it wouldn’t
be Saints’ day because
despite the home
side creating all the
chances, they arrived
without the final
product.
Lloyd-Smith went
agonisingly close to
equalising in added
time, as she reacted
to an improvised
ball forward and
slammed goalward
at close range, only
to be denied by an
impressive Moan save.
Despite creating the
better chances in the
closing stages, it was
Sunderland who came
away with all three
points, moving up to
second in the table
and pushing Saints to
third.
U21S LOOKING FOR PLAYERS
Having got off to a flying start with
wins against Brighton and Liverpool,
Southampton FC Women’s Academy
Under-21 group is looking for players to
bolster the squad.
Saints are
encouraging any
U21 players with a
strong footballing
background to
register their interest
in joining.
As a Category 1
Women’s Academy
team we play
against sides such
as Chelsea, Liverpool,
Manchester United
and Tottenham
with fixtures on
Wednesday
afternoons and some
Sundays. Training
takes place Tuesday
evenings, Friday
during the day and
Saturday.
