The SCG is sandwiched between the internalcarotid artery (front) and the longus capitis muscle(back). SCG branches provide vasoconstrictor nervesfor the face and neck and sudomotor nerves for thesweat glands. They also lead to orbitalis and superiortarsal muscle relaxation and pupil dilation. Some SCGbranches ascend into the brain through the carotidcanal along with the internal carotid artery (Fig. 1.7).Anterior atlantooccipital membrane: a broad structurecomposed of densely woven fibers which connectsthe anterior margin of the foramen magnum tothe upper border of the anterior arch of the atlas.
