The Parish Magazine - October 2023 15 By Heather Hexter A few months ago I set myself the challenge to do something different to celebrate a 'big birthday this year' by raising money for charities caring for teenagers with mental health issues. After a rescheduling due the weather, on 2 September I jumped out of a plane — I was strapped to a GoSkydive instructor from Old Sarum Airfield, Salisbury and my thanks goes to the entire team who were so professional that the experience was amazing. MAD MILLENNIALS Mad Millennials (MM) is the UK’s first non-profit enterprise organisation dedicated to supporting the millennial generation’s mental health and wellbeing. Run by volunteers, MM raises awareness around mental health, fosters conversations to de-stigmatise the topic and provide real and relevant support through various mediums including one-on-one sessions, peer support groups, events, and digital content. Through online and community events and partnerships with the NHS mental health services, Soho House, and the Saracens Foundation, MM is creating welcoming spaces for a generation in need. Its pre-crisis intervention services are aimed to alleviate the pressure felt by millennials, address the gap in services and demand, and normalise the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of mental health. https://www.madmillennials.org.uk/ The skydive pushed me way outside my comfort zone and although it was more akin to a fairground ride I was thrilled to have achieved the first part of my goal to do something different. The other part of the goal, to raise money for charity, is still in progress! For my big birthday, I have asked friends and family to donate to one — or both — special charitable causes supporting teenage mental health: Mad Millennials, and/or STAY, St Andrew's Church Youth. Many of you will know why I especially want to raise money for teenage mental health issues and how my heart goes out to anyone who is a parent or carer and is Images: goskydive.com dealing with these issues. Social media on the Internet enables young people to experience even more pressure than in past times to conform and they cannot escape the constant bombardment, which can be 24 hours a day, asking them whether they’re beautiful enough or smart enough. Children are cruel when they can comment anonymously online leading many to self-harm or have anxiety. This has to stop. We need to raise awareness, to put in boundaries that are healthy and support each young person as best we can.
