The Parish Magazine - October 2023 25 Chairman's Cup for seaside painting When 19 ladies from the Inner Wheel Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh took afternoon tea at the Riseley Village Tea Room the only disagreement was the scones — Devon or Cornwall! Inner Wheel is an international organisation for women, and it is celebrating its centenary in January 2024. The local group meets monthly at Sonning Golf Club, usually on the third Thursday of the month, for a chat and a drink at 7.15pm before a two-course meal which is usually followed by an interesting speaker. The group is involved in several fund raising projects to support community organisations such The Cowshed, which is a Christian charity that provides clothing and other items for individuals and families in Berkshire that are experiencing hardship, and The Book Bus which delivers books to deprived children overseas. Over the last 12 years, The Book Bus fleet has travelled 250,000 miles and opened reading schemes in Zambia, Malawi and Ecuador. More than 100,000 children now have books to read. www.innerwheelrme.org Sonning Art Group's latest Chairman’s Cup award for a painting of the Seaside was won by Maggie Hollidge (left) for her pastel painting of her granddaughter fishing on the rocks at Exmouth. The Cup was presented by fellow committee member Ruth Malton In October the group welcomes back Jenny Whalley, a favourite tutor, who will be demonstrating animals in motion. The Group meets every Friday afternoon at Pearson Hall from 2.30pm — 4pm and for the first time in many years they don’t have a members waiting list, so it will be a good time to call in to meet the group and see what they do.
