News Bayview boost for female golfers Golfers will experience fewer closures, restrictions and poor playing conditions at Bayview Golf Club after the completion of works from a grant allocated by the former NSW Liberal Government. With a focus on securing more involvement by women and girls, Bayview GC received $482,490 to improve and construct course drainage across its layout. The course has historically been prone to flooding, with Cahill Creek running through it and joining Pittwater. The Club said the construction of irrigation and subsurface drainage would reduce the risk of fairways flooding and limit impacts of climate change. “If the course does not flood it can stay open more days, increasing participation particularly for our female players who have found muddy fairways unpalatable,” the project brief states. “Improved playing conditions will attract golfers to exercise, which improves social connection, health including mental health, educational and economic benefits for the community. “Plus the betterment will improve sustainability following natural disaster.” Bayview GC appointed local contractor Neverstop to undertake works, in conjunction with the Club’s Greens staff led by James Thomas. In total, 14 holes of irrigation have been modernised and connected to the central control system. Over 90 irrigation zones were installed, comprising more than 400 sprinklers to ensure edge-to-edge coverage tee through greens. Club President Irene Newport thanked local MP Rory Amon for the former Government’s grant at the official opening ceremony in September. “Sport breaks the barriers that divide us, promoting mental and physical health OPENING: Bayview GC President Irene Newport and MP Rory Amon. and inclusion, no matter what ability, race, religion, culture or age,” said Ms Newport. “Some 75 years on from the founder’s sheep farm, we are now more resilient to natural events. My wish is for Bayview to look to the next 75 years and beyond, building a stronger, happier and safer community.” Bayview COO Paul Clarke said the Club was a forerunner in promoting women’s golf. “The Club’s women members have the same rights as their male counterparts and we are looking to further enhance the golfing experience through the use of gender-neutral tees.” Mr Amon said recent statistics showed women’s membership of golf clubs had increased by 4 per cent, with men’s numbers rising 2.5 per cent. “Often people will look at golf courses and say, ‘we can turn that to football fields’… but they don’t appreciate that golf is a sport which can be played by people at all ages,” he said. “If you don’t invest in the facilities for people to engage in golf, then you’re going to have a generation of people that, when they can’t play contact sports, can’t stay active.” Bayview’s grant was awarded through the Sport Infrastructure Recovery Fund 2022-23. – Nigel Wall 28 OCTOBER 2023 The Local Voice Since 1991
It’s time to split! Permaculture Northern Beaches (PNB) is on the lookout for volunteers to help observe or split native bee hives in October and November. PNB runs a successful native bee program where it provides schools, community gardens and kindergartens with hives every season. In late Spring, the group split these native bee hives at the gardens/ homes of long-term PNB supporters and community gardens. Hive splits are from Mosman to Balgowlah to Mona Vale. PNB will also run a Bee Diversity Highway talk at the Narrabeen Tramshed on Thursday 26 October. HELP: Split hives. Native bees are a critical part of our biodiversity as pollinators of native fauna and foods and their numbers are impacted due to the use of insecticides and pesticides in public spaces and in gardens. This event will outline an initiative to help our bees thrive. Entry is by donation ($5 is recommended); all are welcome.
