News New Music Society hitting the high notes Those with a love and appreciation of classical music will be able to share their interest with similar-minded locals following the formation of a new dedicated local group – the Northern Beaches Classical Music Society – that will meet regularly to appraise and discuss famous and not so famous works. Leading the association is Mona Vale GP and Newport resident Dr Ivor Zetler, who established the Sydney Classical Music Society around 20 years ago. “We presented lectures by famous musicians such as conductors Christopher Hogwood (our patron), Simone Young, Richard Bonynge (who lived at Whale Beach at the time) and Richard Hickox,” said Ivor. “The composer Peter Sculthorpe also gave a series of talks on composing. Peninsula Bridge Club is a notfor-profit organisation in Warriewood. Accredited teachers host daytime and evening beginner classes throughout the year. Their groups are small, and no prior card knowledge is necessary. You don’t even need to bring a partner. Age is no barrier. Cost is $100 which Continued on page 38 Roll up for circus fun Stardust Circus returns to the Northern Beaches in October with shows in Manly and Warriewood. This family-owned and operated Circus opened in 1993, although it has carnival links back to 1896! The performing troupe consists of 38 family members – ranging from 6-year-olds to 54-year-olds, performing aerial, acrobatic and comedy acts, a ‘wheel of death’, quick change, dancing and magic illusions. The ‘fun of the fair’ opens one hour before each show, with Dodgem cars, rides, jumping castle and show bags. Performers train several times a week and the Circus has two full-time school teachers for the group’s 10 school-aged kids. *Dates are 13-29 October (Hinkler Park, Manly) and 3-26 November (Boondah Reserve, Warriewood). ‘Lollypalooza’ for Halloween W ith Halloween’s popularity in Australia growing, many local families are looking for fun and safe ways to meet neighbours, dress up and collect lollies with their kids. Narrabeen Baptist Church has recognised this and will host ‘Lollypalooza’ on Halloween, 31 October, from 4.30-7pm. Families can expect stacks of lollies, as well as carnival-type games, crafts and face-painting. There will also be a sausage sizzle.
